Dominique opened up to us about the writing process for her 2014 memoir The Transsexual From Tobago, how she learned to love Elektra Abundance Evangelista, and documenting her life as a model on the reality series Strut. Plus, we talked about her genre work as Bloody Mary in American Horror Stories, the upcoming documentary I'm Your Venus she executive produced about ballroom icon (and Paris Is Burning star) Venus Xtravaganza, and about the house she was looking at on House Hunters. After struggling to find adequate support and resources during her own pregnancy and postpartum, Dominique Jackson made it her mission to improve access to maternal health education, support and community for other moms to be. Here's what we covered on the episode: Creating Hatch + Nest  In the Summer, Dominique came to one of my workshops, where we worked on launch ideas for her, and I suggested she come on the podcast to talk about what she's doing Dominique shares that her background is in health technology and public policy  After the birth of her first son, Dominique struggled to balance taking care of her newborn, herself, and going back to work, which inspired her to create Hatch + Nest During pregnancy you are surrounded by support from friends, family, and doctors, but most of that goes away after you deliver The first thing that helped Dominique bring Hatch + Nest to life was talking to other entrepreneurs because she had no experience with starting a business or figuring out her brand  Dominique explains how they expanded from just postpartum support to prenatal through parenthood support Hatch + Nest is a maternal wellness platform that offers support through classes like breastfeeding, birth planning, infant CPR, and in-home support through doulas and relationship specialists   Mothers in central Ohio can take advantage of their in-home support services - Dominique shares the educational resources on their website and says they will have upcoming in-person and virtual events Dominique explains that they can get grant funding to help mothers who can't afford their services and says they are always looking for sponsors Hatch + Nest has some upcoming sponsored workshops that include lactation specialists, Doulas, and mental health consultants  How Dominique had to figure out what to prioritize in order to launch and generate revenue  Dominique shares that she had to shift her business model and audience to attract sponsors because that is how they primarily make money Some sponsors support through educational events by providing the space, catering, or gifts, and others sponsor a portion or all of the in-home support after birth Dominique explains her choice to keep messaging targeted towards mothers, but says they have plans to expand messaging to other audiences once they are more established They are planning a program for later in 2024 for dads and adoptive parents Check out the Hatch + Nest website and follow them on Instagram to learn more   Links mentioned: Hatch + Nest Website Hatch + Nest on Instagram    Like what you heard?  Click here to subscribe + leave a review on iTunes. Happy Wine Wednesday!  Award winning journalist Abbey White is back this week to bid a fond farewell to the FX series Pose.  We kick things off with our thoughts on the unexpected announcement that the series was coming to an end.  We then share our overall impressions of the final season.  We loved ALL things Elektra, but did not love some of the pacing issues created by the reduction of episodes.Series co-creator Steven Canals said that in mapping the final season out, the writers looked back to the dreams of the main characters identified in season 1 and essentially set out to make those dreams come true in the final season.  With that in mind, we walk through the final chapter in each character's arc and share our thoughts on where they ultimately landed.Next, we discuss our favorite episodes and musical cues.  We also share our MVPs of the series.  No discussion of Pose would be complete without discussing our thoughts on Pose's chances for long overdue awards season recognition and why the few nominations the show gets seem to all go to Billy Porter. The episode closes with our thoughts on Pose's legacy and the actors who made us thirsty. Follow us on Twitter and Instagram at @MoreWinePod! Send longer feedback to morewinepod@gmail.com.  Give our amazing guest Abbey a follow over on Twitter and on Instagram.  And check out their September 2020 article "How 2020 Emmy Nominations Left the Black Trans Women of 'Pose' Behind" here.Get more in-depth MCU analysis from Kristine over at the Marvelous TV Club Podcast where  Kristine, Marc, and their other fabulous co-hosts are talking all things Loki.As always, we drink and we use adult language.  Cheers!Support the show (https://ko-fi.com/morewinepod)

This week we are discussing three progressive shows on Netflix and Hulu that showcase inclusivity, LGBTQ issues, women’s empowerment, sex positivity and representation. If you are one of those people who say, “there’s nothing to watch,” this episode is for you! We start off with Ryan Murphy’s Netflix original drama, Pose, which spotlights the legends, icons, and fierce house mothers of New York City’s African-American and Latino underground LGBTQ and gender-nonconforming ballroom culture scene in the 1980s and early 90s. The show features the largest cast of transgender actors in series regular roles, including MJ Rodriguez, Dominique Jackson, Indya Moore, Hailie Sahar and Angelica Ross. The show premiered on FX and received critical acclaim and numerous award nominations for the Golden Globes, and Emmys. Many of the characters either battle with HIV/AIDS or know someone dying of the disease. Pose exposes the terrible conditions of these patients and the stigma surrounding their diagnosis. We became obsessed with this show for its portrayal of such heavy matter, done in a beautiful and moving production style. Next we discuss She’s Gotta Have It, a daring story of a sex-positive woman, Nola Darling (played by DeWanda Wise) and her three lovers based on the film by Spike Lee. The series displays her struggle to stay true to herself and fulfill her dreams while juggling her personal life. She fights misogyny and uses her artistic gifts to create anti-catcalling posters. The show openly supports the Black Lives Matter movement, and features a mostly Black cast. We loved the show’s racial and sexual message, along with its unique directional approach. Lastly, we talk about The Bold Type, a must-watch for women’s empowerment. The show is based on real-life former Cosmopolitan editor-in-chief Joanna Coles, and she serves as executive producer for the show. Although the show fictionalizes the magazine name as and highlights fictional characters, the empowering environment is based on reality. The series chronicles the lives of three millennial women, Jane Sloan (Katie Stevens), Kat Edison (Aisha Dee), and Sutton Brady (Meghann Fahy) who are employed at the fictional global publication called Scarlet in NYC under Jacqueline Carlyle (Melora Hardin). We hope you enjoy this episode and check out the Pose, She’s Gotta Have it, and The Bold Type. On this week's episode of Kickin' & Streamin' Graham and Jocelyn review FX Original series Pose, a show starring M.J. Rodriguez, Billy Porter, Dominique Jackson, Ryan Jamaal Swain, and Indya Moore. The series was created by screenwriter, director, and producer Ryan Murphy. Murphy is best known for creating and co-creating heavy hitter series including Nip Tuck, Glee, American Horror Story, American Crime Story among others. Jocelyn describes the series as deeply educational and eye-opening. Graham & Jocelyn discuss how much the series shed light on the reality of the life of LGBTQ folks in the 80's at the height of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Jocelyn expresses her amazement at the members of the gay community's ingenuity of creating "houses" as a safe space, a place of refuge for young homeless and destitute LGBT people to prevent them from dying as victim of hate crimes and other dangers they were exposed to as a result of their sexual orientation. Jocelyn expresses how learning about the Ball Culture, all the details, the history, and the kindness the gay community showed to one another during those times is enough to renew her faith in humanity. The co-host then discuss each of the main cast members and their respective characters. Graham and Jocelyn praise M.J. Rodriguez's absolutely magnificent portrayal of Blanca Evangelista, a HIV positive "house mother" who is committed to bettering the lives of each one of her children, and she is particularly committed to ensuring Damon (Ryan Jamaal Swain) lives up to his potential as a ballet dancer. The two co-hosts then discuss Billy Porter's portrayal of Pray Tell who is the Emcee at the nightly balls where each house compete in a runway-style contest of a variety of categories. The remaining characters and actors are discussed at length and in detail. Graham and Jocelyn point out the importance of seeing the art in the series, the creativity, the braveness of individuals who in spite of all the rejection, discrimination, and mistreatment they received from the outside world, they decided to live their true lives, their true identity, regardless of the consequences and ignorance of the times. Meet Miss Dominique Jackson Transgender model, Dominique Jackson shares her story has taken her from the island of Tobago to Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York City to the reality show Strut to serving her LGBTQ community at Destination Tomorrow. Her story will inspire you. Model & Reality Show Star Dominique Jackson “It all began with a high five.” In an incredibly competitive industry, it’s easy to begrudge the success of another model or actor, to view a colleague’s achievement as if they’ve taken something away from you. But successful transgender model Dominique Jackson rejects such a scarcity mindset, celebrating the success of her colleagues. In fact, the simple gesture of a high five sent waves through the community—and led to the opportunity to do reality series Strut. Dominique grew up in privilege in Trinidad and Tobago but was ultimately rejected by her family over her gender identity. She moved to the US in 1990 and started school while she was transitioning. Dominique has encountered her share of obstacles, from homelessness to drug and alcohol abuse to survival sex work, but a combination of intuition, belief and therapy have allowed her to view those challenges as a test that helped Dominique realize just how far she can go. Dominique paid her dues in the modeling industry, doing a number of free shows before landing a job as a resident model with Adrian Alicea in 2009. This break led to her first appearance at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week that same year. Today Dominique shares the trajectory of her modeling and acting career, as well as her challenging personal journey as a transgender woman. She explains how a shift in mindset and a healthy dose of discipline helped Dominique see her way clear of $10,000 in credit card debt, and how she came to serve as Director of Programming for Destination Tomorrow. Learn about her work to support the LGBTQ community and how to adopt a mentality of abundance. Get all the resources here: https://debtfreeguys.com/transgender-model-dominique-jackson/

This week on the show we are joined by Reverend Malcolm Byrd to talk about the impact of the systemic issues that leads to the events in Ferguson and New York City. We discuss how the internet has changed the face of social justice and has allowed more awareness of the broken-ness of the systems that are meant to protect us. We also discuss the issue in progressive movements of “one true way” -ism, and why utilizing all types of activism is important. Does the activism happening during this season help us find hope, even when it seems there is none? (Note: This show was recorded on Christmas Eve.) Reverend Byrd is a Long Island, New York native, yet he spent his formative years living in Detroit, Michigan and Gastonia, North Carolina where he completed his Secondary Education. Reverend Byrd entered the ministry in 1998 at age 14 and was licensed as an exhorter by Presiding Elder H.L. Hall at the Trinity A.M.E. Zion Church in Gastonia, NC. Reverend Byrd attended Livingstone College, a historically black college in North Carolina where he served as a Presidential Scholar, President of the Student Government Association, President, NAACP, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and member of the Board of Trustees. Rev. Byrd is a graduate of the State University of New York, at Purchase and a graduate of the Pacific School of Religion of the Graduate Theological Union. He was an undergraduate fellow of the Fund for Theological Education. Reverend Byrd has spent a considerable amount of his life fighting for causes aimed at assisting the plight of downtrodden and marginalized people. He is fondly regarded as the “Picketing Preacher.” He shares the sentiment of the great civil rights clergyman, The Reverend Vernon Johns, “When you see a good fight, get in it!” Reverend Byrd hopes that though his various talks, lectures, addresses, and sermons that dormant levels of consciousness will be awakened as a rose reveling its unfurled glory for the first time before the heavens.  Reverend Byrd currently lives in Hempstead, New York along with his wife, the former Dominique Jackson, alumnae of Mount Holyoke College and a professional actress/model.   Links Rev.
