This is the table read of Sam In Retrograde written by Sam jarvis (Dollface. Tosh.o). SAM IN RETROGRADE is a weird little comedy about one woman's journey through grief, and her attempt to find herself in the process. More specifically, it's about a girl who starts carrying her dead husband's urn around everywhere and talking to it as if they're still married. Which yes, does affect her relationships with everyone else in her life. As you'd imagine. The project was developed and optioned at CBS Studios with Party Over Here producing, and Bert & Bertie (HAWKEYE, THE GREAT, TROOP ZERO) attached to direct. It was taken out the summer of 2021 and pitched to Hulu, Apple, Paramount+, Showtime, Peacock, FX, Freeform, and HBOMax. While a few execs fought for it, they all ended up passing. And if I recall correctly, Amazon and Netflix passed before hearing a pitch. It was all very cool. The cast for this one is  nothing short than spectactular. It includes Katie O'Brien (Teachers), Katrina Davis (Figuring It Out), Julie Brister (Goliath), Suzy Nakamura (Avenue 5, Dead to Me, Dr. Ken), John Ross Bowie (Speechless, Big Bang Theory), Leonard Robinson (Insecure), Ashley Padilla (Son of Zorn) and Andrew Reich with stage directions. For more Dead Pilots Society episodes and information about our live shows, please subscribe to the podcast!Make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Instagram, and Twitter, and visit our website at deadpilotssociety.com

Ep394 - Jim Gaffigan, Stand-up Comedian + Actor ‘Troop Zero' & ‘Linoleum'

Creative Principles

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 3, 2023 23:57

“Honestly, I pursued acting and standup at the same time, but I never really got as many opportunities in acting. In standup, you have a little more control over your own destiny,” said Jim Gaffigan, one of the most well-known comedians alive today. “But also, the most fulfilling characters to portray, end up being dramatic roles. So, over the years, finding creative fulfillment in stand-up, writing, or acting, I selfishly choose the things that are the most rewarding,” said Gaffigan. “The roles I turn down, I know from experience, aren't going to be as rewarding.” Past the point of “dying to be in a movie,” Gaffigan has found his own niche as “a partner in the creative process.” This was perhaps most clear while working on The Jim Gaffigan Show in 2015 and 2016. That experience inspired him to know look for the type of person he needed to make each episode a success. “It's been an evolution. Obviously I love getting laughs, but playing Cameron and Kent in Linoleum, there's a different level of fulfillment and complexity that is more rewarding than being in a screwball comedy.” Linoleum, written and directed by Colin West and co-starring Rhea Seehorn (Better Call Saul), the story follows the host of a failing children's science show who tries to fulfill his childhood dream of becoming an astronaut by building a rocket ship in his garage. “This movie presents these questions, like what is success, what is the true meaning of life, what are we trying to accomplish? There's part of me that thinks this movie is just a big love story. When we talk about other people, we can see selflessness and longevity as beautiful, but when we look at it ourselves, we don't necessarily see that.” If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts? It only takes about 60-seconds and it really helps convince some of the hard-to-get guests to sit down and have a chat (simply scroll to the bottom on your iTunes Podcast app and click “Write Review"). Get ready for the youth soccer edition of Old Millennials Remember Movies! Okay, disclaimer: Hosts Angela and Tyler don't really like soccer, and they really don't know why they decided to watch these little-seen soccer movies from the 90s. "The Big Green" is your standard live-action Disney sports comedy - think "The Mighty Ducks" only less good. Steve Guttenberg is here as a small-town sheriff who coaches...err, wait, the British teacher coaches the team. Actually, The Gutes serves no story purpose in the movie. He's there to hit on the teacher and serve a perfunctory role in the film's immigration subplot. Yes, "The Big Green" tackles the topic of immigration with surprising compassion. But there's also a bunch of soccer in the movie, including a climactic "big game" that feels like it plays out in real-time. Why are we watching scenes of kids throwing the ball in from out of bounds? Show us the goals and MOVE IT ALONG! The Old Millennials also discuss the Rodney Dangerfield turd, "Ladybugs," a movie that was probably offensive back in 1992, but is MOST DEFINITELY offensive now. Lots of Rodney (as a guy named Chester, not better) making derogatory remarks towards women, and don't let us forget to mention the implied rape joke that gets played in the movie's theatrical trailer. Oh yeah, and a boy puts on a wig to play for a girl's soccer team. At least in "The Big Green," the team is co-ed and nobody tries to act superior to anybody else. Look, listen to the podcast, but do yourself a favor and NEVER watch "Ladybugs." It will only bring you pain. Also discussed in this episode: Palm Springs (2020) The Baby-Sitters Club (2020 TV series) Troop Zero (2020) Police Story (1985) She's Gotta Have It (1986) School Daze (1988) Check out these related past episodes of Old Millennials Remember Movies March Madness Sports Movie Bracket Mania - ep72 Days of Thunder -ep41 - 1990 The Mighty Ducks - ep29 - 1992

A ragtag band of misfits. A girl who wants to speak to the stars. And a (sort of) climactic talent show featuring the music of David Bowie. Troop Zero also features familiar but fun performances by Viola Davis and Allison Janney, wild southern accents, and some great hair. Pair that with Aislinn's merit badge inspired game, and you have yourself a delightful summer episode to help get you through! This week, lay preacher Josie Waldman shares the movie Troop Zero with us, and what the film meant to her, as a girl who was picked on in school. She shares some of her personal experiences and wonders what it is that makes some kids act the way they do. She asks us to consider the essential question of the movie: "What kind of world would it be if every homely, strange little girl thought she could do whatever she wanted?"

For over 5 years, Demetri Panos (@DemetriPanos), Marisa Serafini (@SerafiniTV) and I did a movie series called Anatomy of a Movie (https://bit.ly/3gksPn6). To call it a review series would be a huge disservice. As fans of movies, we gave our opinions but we also went into the behind-the-scenes making of aspects and tried to showcase our love of movies by helping bring to light how hard the filmmaking process truly is and what a miracle any movie that's made truly is. It's been a while since the three of us got together to talk movies online, but we felt this was a perfect opportunity to do so. In this episode, we each highlight three movies we think you'd enjoy watching at home during continued quarantine/stay-at-home orders. We give you a basic summary, some context for the film and most importantly, why we loved it. Afterwards, we do an "after-dark" segment where we basically go down memory lane. So join us and as you watch, please comment down below with your thoughts on any of the movies we discuss OR suggest a movie of your own. PS: If you'd love to see the band back together, please let us know and we'll figure out something moving forward. Thank you! PS: Here's the movies we selected: a re-watch of Jurassic Park, Your Name, In A Lonely Place, The Mandela Effect, Birds of Prey, The Farewell, The Descendants, Troop Zero and Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. Even though we listed them here, we encourage you to watch the full episode otherwise you won't know WHY we recommended these.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Mother's Day and was able to show some love for their mom. We are supposed to be at the start of the summer blockbuster movie season, but that is hard to do with all the movie theatres closed. So, instead we will review some past summer movies including what is considered one of the most beloved and influential comedies of all-time, Airplane! (which came out in the summer of 1980). You know what is big in the summer, baseball. There was a rather big baseball movie that came out in 1984 called The Natural starring Robert Redford, so we review that too. We also look at a movie that is considered a cult hit in The Boondock Saints, but it wasn't a summer movie and barely was released in theatres. Speaking of not being release in theatres, we have two streaming originals in the animated family adventure The Willoughbys and a period piece family dramedy in Troop Zero that stars Mckenna Grace and Viola Davis. We had a great time recording this episode even if the dreaded technical difficulties made their way in a few times. We really hope you love the show as well, and if you do, please help us out by spreading the word on social media. It will do more wonders for the show than a Skittles rainbow.Reminder that you can subscribe either to The Movie Breakdown feed (a subscription link is at the top right hand of this site) or on iTunes (if you enjoy the show, please help us by giving us a five star review). The Movies' Rating Out of Four StarsThe Willoughbys *** (CS & SM)Troop Zero *** (CS & SM)Airplane **** (CS & SM)The Natural **** (CS) & *** (SM)The Boondock Saints ½* (CS) & ** (SM)
