In this episode of the Defence Connect Spotlight podcast, Jeremy Kenealy – director of growth and air defence at Anduril Australia – joins host Liam Garman to unpack how Anduril has developed an open architecture counter-unmanned aerial system and counter-intrusion capabilities, merging a number of traditional and new sensors to enhance situational awareness on tomorrow's battlefield. They kick-off the discussion by exploring the modern battlefield, where small, low-cost drones are creating strategic operational-level impacts. The conversation then dives into how advancements in drone technology, such as swarms, AI and automation have prompted a rethink. Kenealy explains how some sensors, like traditional radio frequency sensors, are becoming less effective in this environment, and how Anduril's Lattice system harnesses a network of collaborating sensors to deliver a clearer, real-time picture of the battlespace. The episode wraps up with a look at how these capabilities are supporting ground defence operations – and includes an update on the much-anticipated Ghost Shark program. Enjoy the episode, The Defence Connect team
Back in 2010 when I first started podcasting I had a short lived show called "The Saint Mort Show". Most of this content is long gone because it was poorly made BUT it was the place where I first cut my teeth as a podcaster and on the first episode I talked to Troll 2 star George Hardy about the movie, the Best Worst Movie documentary and his new projects which included a film called Ghost Shark 2: Urban Jaws. Enjoy this despite the mediocre sound quality. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

For a long time, it wasn't a great look for startups and big tech – outside of companies like Microsoft – to openly work with the military-industrial complex. That was for contractors like Raytheon and General Dynamics. Tech generally maintained the sunny disposition that it was better to enable world peace through well targeted digital ads. That has changed, and startups like Anduril are now positioning themselves as a new generation of military supplier, marrying Silicon Valley innovation with surveillance tools and military weaponry. In this ep, we look at the history of Silicon Valley and the military, and this new crop of weapons makers. On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are doing our best to stay out of the rain, bathtubs, pools, fountains, and indoor plumbing. We're talking about the 2013 film from Griff Furst, Ghost Shark. It may surprise some of you to learn that sharks are a lot more talented/fearsome than you might have first known. That's not to say that they're inherently terrifying and evil; most of the time they'll leave you alone. But Jaws wasn't just the thrilling summer blockbuster we all love today. Indeed, it was a dire foreshadowing of the underwater terrors to be discovered.Suffice it to say, mysticism and sharks makes for a terrifying combination. What do you do when all water is off limits? What do you do when taking a quenching sip of delicious and previously innocent water puts your life in danger? These are the hard-hitting questions that a B-movie of this caliber is asking, and we praise it for that. No other film has the daring to stand up and do what this film has done. Happiness Solved with Sandee Sgarlata. In this episode, Sandee interviews Jennifer Berk Weisman. Jennifer Berk Weisman is the owner of Just Bones Boardwear, a swim apparel company featuring her patented adjustable waist design. She never set out to build a fashion empire, but Jennifer realized there was a void in the market for boys' boardshorts during a frustrating shopping excursion. A creative problem-solver, she designed innovative boardshorts that offered the “perfect fit” for boys in-between sizes who didn't fit traditional fixed-waist boardshorts. Soon after, the brand expanded to include swimwear for toddlers, men, and women. A standout in the swimwear industry, Just Bones Boardwear's technology won Jennifer two patents and TasteTV's Best Swimwear of 2016 Award for special functionality. Just Bones Boardwear has been featured in ELLE, InStyle, Vogue, and Fashion Week Online, as well as other major press. Jennifer's board shorts were worn throughout Ghost Shark, an original Syfy movie which premiered in 2013 during Shark Week. Jennifer lives in Arizona with her husband, sons, and dogs. She enjoys the outdoors, yoga, photography, volunteer work, and gourmet cooking. Jennifer Berk Weisman started her swimwear business in a male dominated world despite being told she wasn't going to make it. Not only did she succeed, she attained everything she wanted to in the first month of business. During the pandemic, more time was freed up, giving her more perspective to get inspired to start writing. In her book "Sink or Swim" Jennifer shares her story of an accident that caused severe injuries, from PTSD to a brain injury, which led her to evaluating what she really wanted and what her life and business was going to look like moving forward. All musicians want to be actors and all actors want to be musicians. That's how you get David Bowie in the Labyrinth and the Bacon Brothers. To be fair, everyone wants to be in the movie business. Over the last couple of decades, changes in technology and tax incentive programs by state and local governments have made that somewhat easier for folks to do, without necessarily moving to Los Angeles full time. Wherever you do it, it's not going to be easy though. And it can be lonesome too, if you're embarking on a passion project. Brennan Robideaux has spent years pouring his time and life savings into one project: a documentary about pole vaulting Armand Duplantis, said to be perhaps the best to ever to do it and who grew up here in Lafayette. The movie is called Born to Fly and Brennan tracked Duplantis before he won gold and set records in the 2020 Olympic games, following him around the world to document his rise in a candid feature built on 700 hours of footage. Brennan grew up in Lafayette and opened a production company — Robideaux Creative — in 2018 to take on commercial work and other projects. Brennan's name might sound familiar to you because of his dad: former legislator and Lafayette mayor Joel Robideaux. Film maker Griff Furst credits the former mayor's cultural economy program with helping his company Curmudgeon Filmsmake a home here in Lafayette. Griff grew up in Van Nuys, California and in the entertainment industry, tagging along with his dad, actor Stephen Furst (a successful film producer though best known for his early work as an actor as "Flounder" in National Lampoon's Animal House), onto sets from a young age. Today, Griff makes movies both behind and in front of the camera. Griff has acting credits in films like the Magnificent 7 and Terminator Genysis and has directed several sci-fi thrillers under the Curmudgeon umbrella — movies as diverse as Ghost Shark and Cold Moon. Louisiana's production tax credit first brought Griff to Lafayette in 2008. He met his wife, a Lafayette native. They now split time between Lafayette, New Orleans and L.A. And he continues to run productions both in Louisiana and around the country. Conditions compelled us to record this edition of Out to Lunch Acadiana on Zoom. Next week we hope to be back at our regular lunch spot, Tula Tacos on Jefferson Street in Downtown Lafayette. Photos by Astor Morgan at our website, itsacadiana.com. And here's another interesting lunch table conversation about the Acadiana entertainment industry, specifically how the live music biz had to adapt to living with a pandemic. This is what we wanted. This is what we feared. Encountering new life. Endangering our lives. These were some of the last words I heard from my mother on the last transmission from Marv. It was difficult to watch from afar. Not even to watch. To wait. To wonder. It helped me to write the reports. To smooth out all the roughness, pare down all the inessential, and restrain all the rawness from the contents of the data packets that the crew sent before that last transmission. When I saw my mother as a member of a crew on a daring first mission, performing her duties, exhibiting solidarity with her crewmates, I am able to let go of that lurching dread that wakes me almost every morning. Humanity at last discovers an inhabited exoplanet and learns its first lesson about first contact. In this amazing episode of Train Wreck Theater we watch the Made for SyFy Network TV movie Ghost Shark (2013)! This one-off film somehow jumped itself as it tried to cash in on the surprising and completely baffling popularity of the Sharknado franchises by making a completely different movie set somewhere in Louisiana. What is the plot of this crazy monster movie? Well when a couple of locals lose a fishing contest because a Great White shark eats the fish they just caught, they murder it with guns and grenades and hot sauce! It floats to a cave filled with very important plot magic and returns as a ghost version of itself killing the towns people indiscriminately for a few days while the hero's figure out what the hell they need to do to stop it! Train Wreck Theater is a comedy podcast with a group of passionate movie buffs who love all things ridiculous making a lot of jokes about cheesy movies!

Over the last couple of years we ve had to deal with the fallout from big changes in the oil business. We have been far less battered by equally cataclysmic changes in the film business. If you haven t been keeping up, here s the thumbnail sketch. In 2003 the Louisiana legislature decided to attract film production to the state by giving film productions 30 of their budget. In cash. That meant, if you were a Hollywood film producer making a 100m movie here, the State of Louisiana would write you a check for 33m. We started getting more film production than we d ever dreamed of. So much so that Louisiana came to be known as "Hollywood South." It seemed like a win win. Hundreds of local people became film crew and started working non stop. Mostly in Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and Shreveport. In the middle of 2014, the Legislature realized it was giving away about 250m a year to already wealthy film executives. And that figure was about to balloon. So they put a much lower cap on the amount of money they would give away in any one year. As a result, most of the film companies instantly picked up left. Through all these Hollywood South ups and downs, here in Acadiana we ve managed to keep our film business humming along quietly. Actor and Producer Marcus Brown was raised in Jeanerette and lives in Lafayette. You may have seen Marcus in the Academy Award winning movie, 12 Years A slave or in any of the 74 movies or TV shows he s been in since 1995. Marcus s production company, Believe Entertainment, has completed its second major motion picture. Andrew Morgan Smith comes from Lafayette and still lives here. Andrew is a musician. He writes and plays as much music as any working musician around here, but don t look for Andrew performing at The Blue Moon. If you want to hear Andrew s music you can listen to the score of any of the 61 big screen movies and TV movies he s composed. Including Jeepers Creepers III and the cult classic shark movies Ghost Shark and Trailer Park Shark. The film business, at the end day, is just another business. It comes with the same stresses that come with any business. Maybe more. But then again, Marcus and Andrew are making movies. And that is, well, just more glamorous than what most of us are doing.
