Episode 72: Becoming: Letting Go to BE Brave Sometimes the most sacred work isn't adding more to our lives—it's releasing what no longer serves us so we can step into who God is calling us to become. In this deeply personal episode, Cherisse shares the story behind her "September 15th Ebenezer stone"—a hospital room moment 14 years ago that changed everything and launched an annual tradition of brave becoming. From nearly losing her son Drew at 21 weeks to saying yes to solo retreats, international trips with strangers, and spiritual direction training, she vulnerably shares what God has been teaching her about shedding the patterns that once protected us but now limit our growth. Through gentle teaching woven with personal stories, you'll discover: The difference between spiritual molting and self-improvement How to identify what God is asking you to release (approval-seeking, perfectionism, control, performance-based identity) Why community is essential for the becoming process How to transition from survival mode to calling mode Practical ways to build your "brave muscles" even when you're shaking Featuring a beautiful lectio divina pause with Psalm 62:5-8, this episode is an invitation to curious souls ready to release what's complete and embrace what's coming. Perfect for women who are weary from the constant pace of life and looking for ways to restore, rest, and renew their souls in Jesus. There are many levels of Torah. There are many ways to acquire Torah, 48 by the calculation of our Sages. The human with the greatest understanding of Torah was obviously Moshe, the one who received Torah directly from God. In our Parsha we get a stunning description of the profound depth of Moshe's understanding of Torah. When we plumb the matter further, we discover all sorts of secrets. There are actually 50 dimensions of Torah. The 48 ways to acquire Torah are only for the first 48 levels. Moshe's understanding went to the 49th level. Each level is a profound wellspring, be'er (באר) in Hebrew.– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –This Parsha Podcast is dedicated in honor of the person without whom there would never have been a Parsha Podcast. As we go through pesukim from Perek Shira, we are now in the pasuk that the wellsprings sing. A wellspring is an underground source of water, or well that gives forth water. It's nice and clean. And what do they say? מַעְיָנוֹת אוֹמְרִים. וְשָׁרִים כְּחֹלְלִים כָּל מַעְיָנַי בָּךְ: (תהילים פז ז) Those that sing and those that dance, all my wellsprings are to You. The Radak on Tehilim says, Kol Mayannai/all my wellsprings means the wellsprings of my heart- My heart will be like a wellspring that will give forth these songs. So we're comparing our hearts to a wellspring. A wellspring is deep underground, and it comes out and gives forth water. The Zohar tells us, quoted by the Sefer Shev Shematatta in his introduction, that a person is born into this world, and he is a Bor /a pit , an empty hole that you put water into from the outside. He receives from his teachers and his educators and his parents. Then he goes on to be a Be'er . A Be'er is a well, that you have to go down and draw water from. And finally, there is a Maayan a wellspring , which really shoots out the water. It's a different nature than just a plain old well. A wellspring gives forth water. It's never ending, and ever flowing. Like the Mishna in Pirkei Avot, when it describes the students of Rabbi Yochanan and Ben Zakai, it calls Rav Elazar ben Arach a Ma'ayan Hamitgaber, an overflowing wellspring, giving over his Torah, with tremendous hidushim, constantly coming up with new ideas. That's a Maayan . And his good trait is a Lev Tov/a good heart . Because our heart is like a wellspring. We have to turn our heart from a pit to a well , to wellspring which is just overflowing. That's Maayanei Libi/The wellsprings of my heart. My heart is a source of song and a source of all kinds of goodness coming out of my heart. The Midrash says on this pasuk in Midrash Tehilim ( perek 87,7) Rav Yehuda says, in the name of Rabi Meir, Just like the wellspring is constantly flowing new waters at all times, so too, we are going to sing new songs. This is referring to the future when the Jewish people will all turn into Ma'ayans . Rav Sadok Hakohen tells us in his sefer Resiseh Layla that just like Hashem has no boundaries, there is no end to what we could fathom in Him, and therefore, our knowledge of Him keeps on growing and growing to no end. Just that this world is limited, so there's a limit to our understanding. But in the future, we're going to have a never-ending understanding of God. And with the never ending understanding is going to come never-ending song, because the song comes from the excitement of the new understanding. We're going to constantly be singing new songs of new understandings, and it's going to forever be a Shir Hadash . That's the song of the wellsprings to tell us this concept of the never-ending songs. The wellsprings are telling us, Kol Maayanei Bach/All of my wellsprings should be on You. I should constantly be developing new understandings of God. And as the new understandings come, the new songs come. Az Yashir Moshe , which is Tehiyat HaMetim in the future, Bezrat Hashem.

Hi everyone! Welcome to another episode of The Chai on Life Podcast. I'm Alex Segal and today, we're diving into the deep, spiritual world of mikvah and the mitzvah of Taharat HaMishpacha, or the laws of family purity.NOTE: While all of our podcasts are targeted to women, this one specifically is for women, as per the request of the speaker. Also an important note, I know this is a mitzvah that not everyone may be able to participate in right now for various reasons, so if it's a sensitive topic, that is totally okay and you can feel free to skip this one if it's not for you. This is a big one. Mikvah is kind of a mystical topic and has so much power. So this week, I am speaking with Miriam Goldberg. Miriam is a renowned educator who lives in Sanhedria, Jerusalem with her husband Rabbi Yitzchak Goldberg. Both she and her husband have been involved in teaching and guiding chassanim and kallahs for more than a decade as well as providing halachic and martial counseling for married couples.Together, they wrote a book called Wellsprings of Taharah, which is a guide complete with halachic and hashkafic guidance about this important mitzvah. They are also the founders of the Chizuk Series website, where they offer in-person and recorded sessions for men and women in taharat hamishpacha, shalom bait, emunah and tefilah which have become popular internationally.Miriam is actually launching a new series that goes way more in-depth into this topic starting on June 16 so if you like what you hear in this episode and want to learn more, you can join here!In this episode, we speak about:-Why the mitzvah of mikvah can become bland and rote over time and what to do about it-Why it's so important to continue learning about the mitzvah and its laws after you're married, not just before-Important perspective on how to love the mitzvah more if it's one you're struggling with-Why the investment in the mitzvah is so important and some really powerful stories around that-Why the mitzvah of mikvah may be harder in our generation-Why the mikvah waters provide a unique spiritual environment to connect to Hashem-How to get more out of your entire mikvah prep and the experience once you're there-Tips to make the niddah period easier if it's hard for you-How to connect to mikvah night after you've had an argument with your husband and feel emotionally disconnected…and SO MUCH MOREMiriam is just a fountain of information and a wealth of knowledge and she shares deep and powerful concepts in a really attainable and truly thought-provoking way. Hope you enjoy! If there's a woman you want to see here or a topic you want featured, send an email to alex@chaionlifemag.com or send a DM to @chaionlifemag. Thanks so much!

Notes: We play a little with the harmonies over and under this very singable melody Paulette wrote to set part of a letter written in 1675 by George Fox (it's been a minute!) He was writing during troubled times to a persecuted people. As I was recording, I kept wondering how it could feel to be both "sure and steadfast" and "float above"... the invitation is open to you to explore! Songwriter Info: Paulette Meier is a Quaker singer/songwriter from Cincinnati, Ohio, where her strong voice has led crowds in song at many a gathering for peace, justice and an earth restored. As a peace educator in schools, she produced an award-winning album, Come Join the Circle: LessonSongs for Peacemaking, now used in classrooms across the country to help children learn the skills of peacemaking. As Artist in Residence for 9 months at Pendle Hill, a Quaker Center for Study and Contemplation, her appreciation for Quaker history and spirituality deepened, leading to a practice of setting inspiring quotations of 17th century Quaker founding leaders to chant-like song. She leads chanting at the Wisdom retreats of Cynthia Bourgeault, author, mystic, and teacher of the contemplative Christian Wisdom tradition. This on-going collaboration led to a second album of Quaker chants composed by Paulette, Wellsprings of Life: Quaker Wisdom in Chant, on which this song can be found. Rabbenu Bachya writes in his introduction to Sefer Bereshit that the Torah has the wisdom of Hashem inside of it. Furthermore, any wisdom that can possibly be found in this world, Hashem included in the Torah. And that is why it is called תמימה – it is complete – because everything is encompassed in it. The mishnah in Pirkei Avot tells us דכולה בה – which Rabbenu Yona explains to mean every wisdom is found in the Torah. Hashem shared with us the secrets of Creation. Regular students learning in yeshiva are taught things that the wisest men of the generation do not know. How fortunate are we to have the zechut to learn Torah whenever we want. Although it gives us chizuk in emunah when we see information in the Torah about the world that scientists have only recently discovered, we should be no less impressed by anything we learn in it because it is all the wisdom of Hashem. But we can use those instances when we do clearly see how the Torah encompasses all forms of wisdom to give us more of an appreciation for this unbelievable gift that Hashem has shared us. Some years back, a man by the name of Chaim who was a real estate developer, entered the Chazon Ish's offices, seeking the Gadol's blessing on a new project he was working on. He told the Rabbi he was in the process of purchasing a lot in Haifa in which he wanted to build an apartment for himself, as well as a shul and a Bet Midrash that would house a kollel, as well as a mikveh in the basement. The Chazon Ish studied the plans, asked several questions and then replied, “I would like to see several stones from the ground of the lot that you plan to buy.” The developer did not understand the bizarre request, but heeding the word of the Gadol , he collected his papers and left to fulfill the request. He was thinking, perhaps there was some type of segula that the Rabbi would be able to see in those rocks. When he finally returned, hours later, he placed the pebbles on the Rabbi's wooden desk. The Chazon Ish studied the pebbles carefully and then went to look through some of his sefarim . After lifting his head from one of the sefarim, he said, “Yes, this is possible. You should have beracha and hatzlacha in this holy endeavor.” Chaim's eyes lit up and he thanked the Chazon Ish for his time and beracha . Without delay, he proceeded to the seller and purchased the property. Afterward, he met with an engineer to present his plans for the building. The engineer said everything looked good but as far as the mikveh was concerned, he would first have to see the lot. Chaim didn't understand why, but he brought the engineer there to see it. When the engineer inspected the ground, he said, “A mikveh here would be impossible. The ground beneath is solid stone and it is not possible to dig far down enough to build a mikveh there. You should have checked with an engineer before you purchased this property.” Chaim was unfazed. He told the engineer he was confident he could build a mikveh and proceeded to tell him of the blessing he got from the Chazon Ish. The engineer was not impressed. He asked Chaim which college the Chazon Ish attended and what type of degree in engineering he had. Chaim said, “I'm sure he doesn't have a degree in engineering, but if you meet him, you will see for yourself the extent of his knowledge.” The engineer agreed to go meet the Rabbi. He was expecting to come to an opulently furnished study of a distinguished Rabbi with a vast library featuring academic works ranging from philosophy to geology to science. He was astounded therefore when he was led into a narrow room that carried an odor of old books and saw an elderly man behind a worn out desk with a large pile of sefarim that nearly blocked his face. The engineer felt very aggravated that he was dragged all the way to Bnei Brak for this meeting. The Chazon Ish welcomed his guest with his trademark warmth. They began speaking about the plans and the engineer said it would be impossible to dig into that solid stone. The Chazon Ish then told him, “Our holy sages of the Gemara were familiar with each and every stone.” He then opened a Gemara and pointed to a line which said that the type of stone they were discussing gradually dissolves under a gradual flow of water. When water drips on it from a thin pipe, it will soften and then crumble, making it possible to dig in the earth. For the next hour, Chaim and the engineer sat there spellbound as the Chazon Ish gave them a lesson on geology. When they left the Rabbi that day, the engineer told Chaim, “Your Rabbi is a genius. I see that we engineers, geologists and scientists still have a great deal to learn.” הפוך בה, הפוך בה דכולה בה – our Torah encompasses all forms of wisdom. It was given to us by the Creator of everything, who put inside of it the deepest secrets of the world. Every time we learn it we are accessing its wellspring of wisdom.

Today I present a general review of what are the Sacraments, and how they are the spiritual link to our Lord Jesus Christ. They are the connection to the source of all graces, which is the mystery of the Cross of our Lord. From the Cross come all the graces we receive, and they reach us through the seven sacraments. These concepts may seem basic, but they're a key foundation to understanding all the sacramental life of the Church. Listen in to understand why these sacraments are necessary for your salvation! - More info on this can be found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church #1113-1134, and 1210-1212. - Also, for a more concise presentation, check the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, #224-240. - Biblical quotations: Spiritual Water welling to eternal life (John 4:13-14); Jesus is “the Life” (John 14:6); God makes us partake in His Divine Nature (2 Pet 1:4). - Fr.
