Poets Ella Frears and Will Burns were at the shop to read from and talk about their new collections. Ella's Goodlord, from Rough Trade Books, takes the form of a long, lyrical email to an estate agent, interrogating our obsession with ‘property' with Frears' characteristic humour and sharpness, while Will's Natural Burial Ground (Corsair) is the second collection from a writer Max Porter has described as ‘a soulful English poet of the kind we don't make enough of'. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
On this episode we meet Will Burns to hear about his latest poetry collection Natural Burial Ground. Many of you will know Will from his fantastic (lockdown set) novel The Paper Lantern, a portrait of a transforming social & physical landscape during the strangest of years. It is a book flooded with new found time unlike Natural Burial Ground. Instead there, Will's voice is open to the complexities and trials of loss. Both books though urge the reader to look again at the wider world and the moment they find themselves in and are huge recommends. We also hear from Kevin Boniface who reads from his brilliant collection of short stories, Sports and Social. Set in a small Yorkshire town they are written with the eye of someone who sits at the heart of their community, mapping it's intricacies, in beautifully observed, deeply humane writing.Sports and Social is published by Blue Moose Books. Natural Burial Ground is published by Corsair Press and The Paper Lantern is published by W&N. All books are available either at the authors or publishers websites as well as all good independent bookshops, so do check them out. Will Burns - www.willburns.co.uk Kevin Boniface - www.bluemoosebooks.comHuge thanks as ever go to Huw Marc Bennett for the use of his song Y Gwydd and to Ian Hawgood for the use of I'm Not Sure We Belong@fieldzine /www.fieldzine.com

It's October 1910. An explosion destroys the Los Angeles Times Building. Twenty people are killed, and many more are badly injured. With a rise in domestic terrorism, bombs have been detonating across the United States, as war between the unions and non-unions rages on. Famed private detective William J Burns is hired to find the arsonists. The New York Times once called him “the only detective of genius whom the country has produced.” What follows is an investigation that takes him across The States, following shady characters with murder on their minds. Will Burns be able to find the bombers before they strike again, or will this be the case that finally bests the celebrated private investigator? For our watery and wild Verb - which flows though the water of chalk streams, the ocean, a baby's bath water, and birth waters - Ian McMillan is joined by Ruth Padel, Vik Sharma, Caroline Bergvall and Will Burns. Ruth and Vik share their collaboration '24 Splashes of Denial' which combines an apprehension of loss with vast and delicate beauty, Will Burns reads a new commission for The Verb on his experience of chalk streams (a globally rare and 'gin-clear' habitat) in Buckinghamshire, and Caroline Bergvall opens a door in our watery imagination, tracing the idea of refuge in extracts from her project 'Nattsong'. Wild Poetry 'Call-out' ! From Ian McMillan: "As part of the BBC's celebration of our wild isles, we thought we'd tap into the deep waters of the Verb listeners' collective and individual imaginations. We want to see your poems that use the idea of wildness as their seed – they could be as short as a haiku – or as long as twenty lines – that's the limit. We're particularly interested in poems that take the word ‘wild' itself on a journey. Email your poems to Theverb@bbc.co.uk. Although we won't be able to respond to each poem, together they'll give us a national snapshot - a moment in wild time that we'll explore later in the year; we'll share some of your poems on-air. Send us your poems by the 23rd of June."

Escuchar audio

The educational system is continually evolving with an assortment of options. Special guests, Will Burns and Mercer Carlin, share their own personal experiences in the educational system as well as the educational choices they both made with their own children. Will chose a traditional education with his children while Mercer chose a self-directed education for her child. What is possible when a child chooses what they want to learn? Do children learn best when they make their own decisions about what they want to learn? Do children learn more from their culture and environment than from the material that is imposed upon them? We dive deep into the advantages and some possible disadvantages of both educational systems. Neither is better or worse. We discuss the differences and allow you to weigh out the options. I've often thought remote collaboration is inferior to in-person collaboration but Will Burns, founder of Ideasicle, who has worked at the most prestigious agencies, says it can be better! It turns out there are certain negatives that come with in-person collaboration most of us forget about. Introverts are steamrolled by loudmouths, and we tend to discriminate based on where feedback comes from. But remotely? Some of that stuff goes away.

It's almost Alice through the Looking Glass. An emerging industry leader that legally operates tax-free is asking - no, imploring - lawmakers to slap a levy on its business. That's exactly what Airbnb, the web-based app that pairs up travelers with people looking to cash in on a spare room or three in their private homes, is asking the Massachusetts Legislature to do. Will Burns, the director of policy for Airbnb, says it's a matter of fundamental fairness, but taking off his corporate hat, he admits the effort is to legitimize the technology as an accepted commercial entity.
