Kentucky basketball has lost their third straight game.On today's episode of Locked On Kentucky, Lance Dawe recaps Kentucky vs Gonzaga basketball. The Wildcats gave up everything they possibly could in the paint to Ben Gregg and Graham Ike, and it cost them. What is the issue here? Dawe breaks down the lack of physicality, the inept play from the frontcourt, and the questionable decision making to leave Rob Dillingham out of the game for the crucial stretches late.Dawe also addresses the state of affairs in college basketball and Kentucky basketball. The game has become more difficult to dominate, sure, but these are the Kentucky Wildcats. They shouldn't lose three straight home games. They should not be this bad on defense. They should not lack physicality. What's changed? With NIL, the transfer portal, and the evolution of the sport, things have become more difficult to manage as a coach. So what does Kentucky do? Taking a pause on our NFL Training Camp tour before we roll out the remainder of our camp episodes next week, We pivoted to this wknd as thousands of young men across the country take the field to chase their dreams! That's right, with all the excitement and buzz around college football kicking off, we had the opportunity to sit down with two of the nation's top players, Ohio State's CJ Stroud and Texas' Bijan Robinson. Ohio State starts the season hosting Notre Dame Saturday and Texas hosting LA-Monroe. Stroud, a front runner for the 2022 Heisman and possible No 1 pick in next year's NFL draft, is poised and excited to lead the Buckeyes to a winning season. Sharing his upbringing and opening up about his father not being around to watch him play now is an emotional but uplifting story of a son who is not just working for his team but for his family's future as the head of his household too. Texas, once known for a rich history of college football and top draft picks, went 5-7 last season and Bijan is on a mission this year to restore the school's winning ways and looks to be a top running back selected in next year's draft. Bijan talks about the current NFL guys he looks up to and watches, hoping to model his play after guys like Zeke, Saquon, Derrick Henry and Jonathan Taylor, who he feels should have been the league's MVP last year. A man of a faith, Bijan tells Fred that he is ready to run his way into history books for Texas while CJ shares with the guys that this year is the best he's felt about his teammates and the chemistry in the locker room. With NIL deals changing the college landscape, CJ and Bijan explain to Channing, Ryan and Fred how although seven figure deals are rolling in, they are still able to stay grounded and motivated by the love of the game and their teammates, not the money. Ahead of Ohio State's first game, CJ gifted each of his teammates $500 to buy a new suit and look the part to start their college season together as one. As a college athlete interested in NIL deals, how can you connect with potential partners? With NIL being such a new concept, there are several ways outside of the traditional models of procuring endorsements that are showing up as options for student athletes. One of these new platforms is MatchPoint Connection, which is a two-way marketplace that helps student athletes and other social media influencers connect for endorsement purposes. Through their web-based app, student athletes can connect and partner with brands both locally and nationally to earn money through various types of endorsement deals. In this episode, Jonathan Pixley, Vice President of Athletic Operations at MatchPoint Connection, sits down with AWM Capital's Will McGuffey and Zach Miller to discuss what MatchPoint Connection is as well as the current landscape of NIL for college athletes. In what is a constantly evolving marketplace, Jonathan shares his insight on what the NIL marketplace looks like, and the direction that it is trending. One point that Jonathan believes that all athletes should understand is that while making money with current NIL opportunities is important, the focus should always be placed on being a good person and your preparation and performance on the field. With many student athletes not knowing how to capitalize on the NIL opportunity, Jonathan gives our listeners valuable insight into the processes that have been successful for student athletes so far. Whether it is a proper valuation, understanding your marketability, or tips into curating and maintaining a successful brand, Jonathan, Will and Zach discuss how athletes should be looking at the NIL opportunity. Episode Highlights2:05: What is MatchPoint Connection?4:30: Why was Matchpoint Connection founded and what services does it offer student athletes?5:35: What does the NIL landscape look like for a student athlete?6:57: Are there any changes to NIL rules for NCAA athletes that are on the horizon?8:30: A discussion on current trends in the NIL marketplace and what are athletes able to earn.10:10: How should student athletes value themselves in the NIL marketplace?11:50: What should a student athlete do when managing their brand and image.13:35: NIL as a recruiting tool for college athletics.15:58: Discussion on how NIL will impact the future of NCAA sports.19:00: How to succeed on and off the field with NIL. We're only seven months into the Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) era in college football, and it's already starting to have a noticeable impact on the sport of college football. Tuesday, April 27 was another dark night for all fans of college sports. With Dr. Emmert sticking around for two more years, it is sad seeing someone who is not a proactive leader. With NIL on the horizon and gender equity as hot button topics, Conference commissioners and athletic directors mostly hate him, but a group of university presidents voted unanimously to keep him. It is shocking, but this move did not surprise me at the least.
