Heads up, the correct response is definitely “to bee.” With Spring in full swing, bees are starting to come back into our lives after their winter hiatus and I figured I'd bring in some people to get us hyped on these little creatures. In this episode we have Paul, a beekeeper, and Penny, a master gardener, and they'll share a ton of rad information about the lives of bees and the gardens that make them happy.
With Spring and Summer here, host Seth Stephenson sat down to discuss pollinators and their importance to our ecosystem with Quail Forever Arkansas Monarch & Pollinator Coordinator Leslie Cooper. With Spring in full swing, everyone is starting up their lawnmowers that have been dormant for the winter. That's when Maxwell gets the most calls about fixing small engines.
With Spring in full bloom, everyone's starting to think about their gardens, flowers and warmer weather to come. We welcome PittMoss CEO Brian Scott back to Business as Usual to talk about the many ways his environmentally friendly potting soil creates a lot of green. PittMoss calculates that in 2020, its products prevented 81,111 cubic feet of peat moss from being extracted, which equates to the reduction of 811.11 metric tons of C02 emissions. Annually, PittMoss gives each customer an Environmental Savings Certificate, which displays their calculation and certifies a specific number of metric tons of C02 emissions they’ve avoided that year. Plus, with its new funding campaign on Republic, small investors can put a little bit of their "green" into the PittMoss to help make it grow.
With Spring 2021 now a little over a month old it is time to celebrate it with not only the sound of peepers (I will explain that in a few minutes) but with a broadcast from February 19th, 1994. I know that date may not bring on thoughts of spring but it’s a special episode and I was just so darn thrilled to find it in the Vault. Due to some thawing weather we were to experience that weekend 27 years ago, it started the discussion of Norm’s hens and when they would start laying eggs again. You see, hens lay eggs when it’s warm. Heated henhouses make them lay eggs all the time. A regular backyard coop that gets cold in the winter makes them stop until the weather begins to warm up again. Norm and I were discussing this earlier that day and I had the very silly idea to make it a contest where people would send in postcards with their guess of the date one of his hens would lay an egg. Thus “The First Egg of Spring” contest was hatched. And wait until you hear what the prize was to the whomever guessed correctly. This spring talk it also segues to talk of the peepers. A peeper is a small frog, about an inch to an inch and a half long, who awaken from their winter slumber as the weather warms (usually late March through April). They make a chirp-like sound that some may confuse with crickets. Norm had a bog at the end of his driveway by the main road. He would risk life and limb and bring a portable tape recorder down there, cars whizzing by and all, to record them. We would then play them on the show every year. It was a very popular feature. So much so that at one point someone offered us “peeper keychains” to give away on the show. It was a small circle with a peeper sticker on it and when you pressed it, it made the sound! We gave so many of them away as prizes. In honor of that I will play you a recording from 1992 that Norm made down at the bog. It was on an old cart and I had to do some digital enhancing to try and get the best audio out of it. To continue that tradition, I have an area nearby that is teaming with peepers every spring. I have recorded them for the last few years and posted it on-line. I will now do that here, every year, and hope it rekindles and keeps Norm’s spirit alive. You will hear Norm, being the world’s foremost peeper translator, deftly explain what they are saying. The callers have so much fun talking about the First Egg of Spring and the peepers. Jo and Cathy resume learning birdsong in lockdown, this time tuning into the calls of the blue tit, great tit and coal tit. With Spring fast approaching, gardens, parks and woods are alive with the sounds of these three common UK tit species, but it’s easy to be confounded by all their chirping and tweeting, and treat them as background noise. In this episode Jo and Cathy set about investigating their individual sonic signatures and explore how to distinguish and disentangle (most of the time!) one species from each other. Little changes can create an incredible impact. This is the season to spring forward with new things in preparation for greater things. God has a plan for you. But you have to be willing to get out of the way. With Spring around the corner, the weeds need to be cleared in order for the new to rise up. Desire to be supported and encourage by other like-minded women? Join us at Women of IMPACT. http://bit.ly/WomenofIMPACT What have you been telling yourself? Be honest. No wishy-washy answers. Have you been leading yourself down a path of doubt and despair? Have you been one to dive into the acceptable chaos just because you know what it feels like? God wants more for you. He wants to use you beyond anything you can imagine. Even your dreams are too small compared to God's dreams for you. However, you must be willing to let God refine you so He can work through you. All of this is in preparation for greater things. The K.I.S.S. ~ In preparation for greater things! So are you preparing the way for God? Are you allowing yourself to be pushed and pulled in all different directions? Refinement doesn't come without stretching and stripping. But the beauty that follows after is incredible; it's heaven-sent. "Yet you, Lord, are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand." ~ Isaiah 64:8 God is molding you into greatness, exactly what He needs for you to live out your dreams. But you have to be willing to be pruned, which means, change is going to happen. It's a reality! Think about this. When you prune a tree or plant, what happens? It goes stronger, taller, and prettier. Our pruning comes to how we are living our lives; in words, in actions, and in thoughts. So what are you telling yourself? "When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me." ~ 1 Corinthians 13:11 We need more than childish words and actions. We have to grow up to be used by God. I don't like it either. It's easier to just get by. But His blessings require more of us, more of you. CHALLENGE: What is God awakening within you? What is He pushing back on? God created you on purpose for a purpose. He wants to position you and use you for greatness. Yet it all comes down to you readying yourself in preparation for greater things. "This is the day that the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it." #SweetSpirit #CreateYourNow #SoulfulSunday TAKE A.I.M. ~ Action Ignites Motivation - This is a complimentary (FREE) coaching call with me. In the wide open spaces I sense You, oh so near... In the deserts, and the oceans, The gaps between the stars disappear... All is filled up, so gracefully with You, In the infinite pools, black skies Turning slowly white, to blue. Blasing with gold fire As the sun claims its course... But even all of that power, Simply speaks of its source. You my beloved, my Lord Most fair of the ages, Most hidden of beauties, The treasure of the sages... How brilliant your whisper, When one looks into the deep, What images you gift us, While soundly asleep... You are so perfect, So much greater than any soul. You are so worth it, For all the things you Love and Know... You are the path to satisfaction, Wherein we can no longer be remiss, For the Light of Your creation, Has already promised us this. Trees like green candles, Aflame with new leaves Light up the creation, With Spring and its dreams. Yet even in the desert, Where nothing seems to change, Even upon the wild ocean, Whose waves remain the same... Even in the canopy of the planets undisturbed, There moves the immortal consciousness, If only we'd listen, would be clearly heard. If only we'd look then, we'd openly observe... That in these great silences That my God, you do speak, To teach us compatibility, With the mysteries You keep.

I DON’T KNOW HOW TO ORGANIZE MY GARAGE. With Spring in the air and some downtime, I had this thought that I should clean out my garage. But then I thought “I can’t just clean it out. We all have things in our life that we think we just don’t know how to do. And we live inside the constraints of that story for years, often frustrated that it has to be this way. Happy Passover to those who celebrate it! With Spring in full swing, and quarantine-life driving everybody stir-crazy, we here at Tis the Podcast wanted to show our appreciation for you by sharing a very special Easter episode of the show, in which Julia, Thom, and Anthony cover the 1974 classic, It's the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown! Enjoy as the three hosts discuss this not-as-well remembered holiday-themed, Peanuts special (with one host in particular acting quite Grinch-y and claiming it's merely a rehash of A Charlie Brown Christmas and It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown), share their favorite quotes, and refute Todd Killian's (of "Christmas Clatter Podcast") re-casting of the iconic 1994 film, The Santa Clause by recasting it themselves! This is one fun episode you definitely do not want to miss, so settle in with your chocolate bunnies after you hide those Easter eggs, enjoy, and have a very Happy Easter! And for those of you who are Patrons of the show, keep an eye out for another Patreon-exclusive bonus episode dropping on Easter Sunday itself, in which the elves cover the 1977, Rankin/Bass special, The Easter Bunny is Comin' to Town!
All things come to an end, but that ending also means a new beginning. I'm being honest, if you were to have told me sometime back that a salon business dedicated purley to curly hair could be successful, I would have been doubtful! How wrong could I be! I'm psyched to talk to this weeks guest, Matthew Surplice, the founder and owner of Spring – the UK's first dedicated curly hair salon, and today he'll be sharing how he found success by niching down to specialise in curly hair only. As many of you know, I'm a huge fan of niching down. But why? Having a niche is important because if you try to cater to everyone your overall marketing and message won't actually speak to anyone. Being all things to all people can give your business a less competitive advantage, to those who 'find their niche'. With Spring finding it's niche specialising in curly hair, we'll hear why meeting the needs of a very specific group of people has been a far better alternative for it's salon business. There's so much to learn about Spring's point of difference to that of any other salon in the UK, and how they are cutting, styling and colouring curly hair only using their trademarked Curl by Curl techniques. We talk so many great things here in this episode today, that includes hearing why Matthew started his journey into the arena of specialising in curly hair, and how you should be cutting and styling curly hair. It's a valuable lesson for us all! I know you'll get a lot from my conversation with Matthew, and how educated you'll be in both curly hair and niching down to find your point of difference in hairdressing. Let's jump to it and spread the curly love! Thanks for Listening To share your thoughts: Leave a note in the comment section below. With Spring on the way, seasoned gardeners are already looking at seed catalogs and picking out their varieties they'll plant this year. Part of healthy living is healthy eating and what a better way to do that then to plant your own garden and raise your own food? 1. A garden space doesn't have to be large to yield a good harvest. A five-gallon bucket, for instance, can hold a tomato plant which will be sufficient to feed one or two people fresh tomatoes in the late Summer and Fall. In this case, even if you live in a small apartment you can have fresh veggies. Use your balcony, outside patio or a window where the sun will come in for most of the day. Use pots or a bucket to hold your plants and you have a garden. If you have any kind of yard, then designate a small corner or portion of it to plant your garden. Here you'll have a little more freedom in what you can plant and how much. Whatever size your space, choose one and start planning your garden. 2. Gardens can be very therapeutic and great for people of all ages. If you are new to gardening, however, I would suggest starting small. You want this to be something enjoyable to get your feet wet, not something that ends up being overwhelming and stressful. I have seen people get excited about their first garden and plant a huge one the first year. It never turns out well, so I highly recommend starting off small and then adding to it each year as you learn and grow with your plants. 3. Every community has local gardeners that are more than happy to share their knowledge of how to grow a garden. Everything from what types of veggies grow best in your area and climate, to what type of soil you will need. If you are planting your garden outside, then obviously your soil is right for your area but might need some extra nutrients added. You can ask your Ag extension officer at your courthouse to test your soil, so you can see what minerals or things your soil might be lacking. If you don't know any local gardeners to gain advice from, then head to your local nursery where you will find many knowledgeable employees. Although I'm a seasoned gardener, every year things pop up where I need to ask a fellow gardener advice. The ladies at my local nursery have been one of my best resources. 4. No matter what you do or try in life, it's always a good idea to go into it with a learner's attitude. Your local library is also a good resource and free. The sky is the limit on plant-related, how to grow garden books. 5. Reading instructions. Before you buy seeds, read the back of the packet to see what zones and what time of year to plant for your area. You need to be sure to look at tags on fruit trees and other flowers or shrubs for this same information. The last thing you want to do is buy something that won't make it in your zone. It's heartbreaking when you're excited about planting something and find out it's dead when next Spring rolls around. Checking packets and tags will prevent some of this and ensure you have a great first experience. If growing a garden is not a possibility for you this year, then make sure to choose a healthy alternative when buying your produce. Your local farmers market is a great place to do this. You support your local community and get fresh organic produce. Most farmers markets are held once or twice a week. Make time in your schedule to go to the farmers market, the same as you would go to the store. You will not only get fresh veggies but fruits, canned goods, and baked goods. Be sure to ask each farmer at their booth if they are organic or if they spray before buying as not all are equal. These local farmers are also a great resource for learning the ins and outs of gardening, so don't be afraid to ask questions. Top 5 Tips for Growing Your Own Garden. Pick your space. Start small. Gain local knowledge and resources from gardeners, your Ag officer, and people at your farmers market.

ORIGINAL AIR DATE: May 20, 2016 | With Spring upon us, area high school students are experiencing an annual tradition and one of the school year’s highlights: Prom. It’s an exciting time. But, along with all of the pomp and pageantry this time of year brings, it also brings concern for parents because inside that formal suit or dress is a kid still fully capable of demonstrating risky behaviors common among their teen peers. Particular areas of concern are drinking and driving, texting while driving and non-use of seat belts. One intervention strategy designed to help teens steer from risky driving behaviors is Froedtert Hospital Trauma Center’s ‘Forever Changed’ mock crash program. Take a closer look and explore whether teens at risk can be forever changed, for the better, inside this edition of CTSI Discovery Radio!

My dear friend and fellow masterminder, Laura Lilly, has over 10 years of experience working with non profit organizations. After working for a traditional consulting firm for the past eight years serving mid-sized nonprofits (like YMCAs, independent schools, hospitals, and retirement communities), she started her own company, Spring, to offer consulting services to startup and small nonprofits. Listen as Laura shares her journey and advice for gaining fast momentum as a new business. Mission: The best entrepreneurial ventures blend your WHY for you and your WHY for the world. With Spring, Laura has done just that. She paired her desire to create an online business and have flexibility to stay home with her young family, with the desire to help smaller nonprofits get the resources and momentum they need to make the impact they envision. Mindset: Inspired to make the year ahead one of joy, Laura became much more intentional with where she spent her time and energy. While at a yoga class, she heard the lyrics, “Be strong, be kind, be brave. Know that it’s alright to be afraid.” Adopting those lyrics as her mantra, she found the courage to do more big and scary things to create more meaningful success. Marketing: Interviewing prospective clients has been the most eye-opening activity that Laura has done within the business. Gaining a true understanding of the pains, needs and even the exact words that her customers are using, is propelling Spring forward much faster. Momentum: At the time of this interview, Spring was only 1 month old but already experiencing so much momentum. Laura shares the even in that short time, the biggest momentum to date has been the overwhelmingly positive feedback that she’s received from those within the nonprofit industry. Masterminds: Laura and I have been masterminding together for several months. I love how she relates our mastermind to the feeling of having co-founders. We truly have all been in the trenches together for both the big decisions and the small details. She shares the courage and bravery that having a mastermind has provided. Mastermind Challenge: So many entrepreneurs rack their brains trying to figure out what their clients want and need. As Laura has shown, you just need to ASK. Send out a survey using a platform like Survey Monkey or Google Forms. Even better, invite a few of them out for coffee or lunch. You’ll be surprised how forthcoming they are with information that not only helps YOU, but helps you better serve THEM. We’re all in this together!
