Laura Meijering, a designer, fashion lover and entrepreneur from The Netherlands. While studying, Laura watched the True Cost documentary - something inside her snapped and she realised she wanted to be part of a better fashion system. Laura founded Unravelau in 2017, to unravel the threads of fashion and keep only the good parts. She wants to pioneer a new way of designing the clothes we wear. As Laura says, unravelling the fashion industry is a big job, and so Unravelau starts by cutting the crap and spreading awareness of the impact we have on the planet. Unravelau uses only organic and second-hand materials, and produces for customer commissions, so there is no dead stock.

Once again this week, things are a little bit different as today's episode features Laura being interviewed by former Special Forces Green Beret, Fran Racioppi, on ‘The Jedburgh Podcast'. Touted as ‘a conversation with prominent visionaries, drivers of change, and those dedicated to winning', this podcast is a natural and timely fit for Laura, as she participates in the Olympic Trials this week and next in her bid to compete in her fourth Olympic Games. Be sure to tune into the Olympic Channel and NBC and join Fran in cheering her on in her attempt, and enjoy this interview here today which outlines precisely just what it takes to reach similar success in your own life.   Laura and Fran begin by looking at what it takes to reach elite levels, and then discuss Laura's career from her start in high school to present day. Along the way, they explore her perspective on failure and fear, the need to take ownership of your performance, her Sydney Olympics experience, and her Dream Chaser philosophy. They also delve into Laura's neck surgery and recovery, her preparation for the Tokyo Olympics, and her take on finding balance in life and achieving longevity in sports. The interview concludes with her thoughts on channeling the pressure of the moment, ‘The Pursuit of Gold', the 3 things she does every day, and the elite performance characteristic that Laura most exemplifies – drive. As Laura heads into the Trials which will determine her immediate Olympic future, today's sweeping examination of the many components which have brought her to this moment could not be more relevant – listen in and prepare to be inspired. Episode Highlights:       What it takes to reach elite levels Laura's high school diving experience and her ‘call to action' Her perspective on failure Taking ownership of your performance Laura's performance at the Sydney Olympics, the events leading up to it, and the pep talk she gave herself Dream Chaser Her neck surgery and recovery Laura's thoughts on fear and moving past it Preparing to qualify for Tokyo Dealing with the ‘uncontrollables' Her thought on finding balance in her life Achieving longevity in sports Channeling the pressure of the moment Her ‘Pursuit of Gold' podcast Laura's next couple months The 3 things Laura does every day to be successful The elite performance characteristic that Laura most exemplifies Quotes:    “Faith and determination separate the good from the great.” “Just because somebody tells you you can't, doesn't mean it's true.” “Failure is part of success. And the concrete actions that you take from the moment you accept that you failed are what defines you as a leader and as an elite performer.” “I'm not afraid to look like a fool.” “When we talk about the development of elite talent, there's a requirement to be humble and show humility.” “How can I become better? How can I fix that? How can I move forward?” “It doesn't matter how old you are, doesn't matter what station you have in life, you can really make a difference for somebody just by being there for them.” “This pressure that you felt became a power.” “I realized that there were so many people that probably would never have the opportunity that I was in at that moment.” “The task ahead of you is never greater than the power behind you.” “I absolutely loved it, because it wasn't about me in that moment...it was about something so much bigger.” “So it's about the pursuit, it's about the hunt. It's about who you become. And I think that's what I really mean by Dream Chaser.” “You have to have this done just to be a mom because if you trip down the stairs, if you have a small car accident, like, that could lead to a quadriplegic.” “A lot of times we're scared of the unknown…fear is a lot of times a liar.” “To wholly stay in the moment is really the biggest key…and you have to practice that in practice.” “I think really breaking my foot back then was such a gift because it gave me that opportunity to focus on visualization, to go through so many competition scenarios in my mind with so many different athletes.” “Adversity makes you stronger.” “The challenge in front of you sometimes becomes the blessing that you needed.” “I have learned this last year is that I can just tear my plans up, throw them out the window, because I've got to roll with it. And I'm not good at that.” “I think one of the best things COVID taught me was that I need to have my kids be part of what I'm doing.” “They saw the sweat, they saw the tears, they saw the frustration, they saw how many times a day I was having to do this stuff and how hard I was working, all just hoping to get back in the pool. So it provided a lot of really good conversations for us.” “The best people you see doing this are beginners at some point, like, you have to start somewhere.” “I've had a lot of times where I'm like, you know, God, I'd be okay, if He closed the door, and we're done with this. But He's made it very clear, this is where I need to be, and He's made a way, and then that fire is back, and that fuel is back.” “I've learned not to be scared of my emotions. I've learned how to use them and how to direct them.” “And it's not about the pressure, or the expectations, or all these other things, just let that go. And it's just about me enjoying the moment.” “This is actually my way of finding the resources and giving them to other athletes.” “Learning those lessons from people and taking that with me, I think makes me not just stronger mentally, but emotionally and spiritually.” “There's this need for achievement and growth mindset - be better today than you were yesterday, continuous self improvement - that you display that has set you apart from all of your competition.” “For all the people who maybe think they're too old to do something they love to do, don't let society or culture decide that for you. If you love something, do it.” Links: The Pursuit of Gold Homepage 5 Smart Strategies to Confidence Conquer Your Fear in 5 Days                   Laura's Social Media: Laura's Instagram Laura's Facebook page  The Jedburgh Podcast: The Jedburgh Podcast Website The Jedburgh Podcast on iTunes The Jedburgh Podcast Instagram The Jedburgh Podcast LinkedIn

Professional cyclist, Brad White, joins Laura on the podcast this week. While working as a teacher, Brad discovered professional cycling somewhat later than most, but enjoyed great success in a very short amount of time. Eventually leaving teaching behind, he went on to compete internationally full time, and, upon retirement from the sport, has found a way to continue to make his passion his livelihood. Filled with wisdom and experience both within the sport and beyond, Brad has much to share with listeners today.   He starts off by recounting his rather unique beginnings in his sport, his transition to becoming a professional rider, and the type of cycling in which he competed. Brad goes on to share details regarding the team aspect of the sport, his preparation for races, the importance of patience in sports, and some of his most memorable moments. His training focus, special awards, definition of success, and transition out of professional cycling are also explored. Brad finishes up with a description of the work he does these days which keeps him connected to the world of cycling. As Laura notes, Brad’s wisdom and experience is ‘hard earned’, and today he demonstrates once again that so much of what is learned through sport is remarkably valuable in so many aspects of life in general. Episode Highlights:   How Brad found cycling His transition to becoming a professional Tours and road racing Team selection, training, and roles Preparing for races physically and mentally Developing patience Brad’s most memorable moments Where his nickname came from Brad’s training program focus Some of his special awards His definitions of success when he was racing and now Brad’s transition out of professional cycling Moms in Tow Velo Kids Velo City Cycles Quotes:   “The next thing I knew…I was not teaching anymore, I was racing.” “It's really important that you know your role, you can execute your job, but also that you show up ready.” “The preparation for each course is going to be different, but kind of the same, and then you're just going to react differently.” “The overall time is what matters to some riders, but then, to other riders, winning a stage is a big deal.” “If I need to suffer this that little bit longer, you know, they may give up.” “I think one of the biggest motivators for me was just not wanting to let down my team, my fans.” “Patience is a huge part of, I think, all sports.” “We were just riding so well together all the time, having fun on and off the bike.” “I think there's definitely something about, even with a training plan, listening to your body and being able to react to what your body is dealing with, and get the most out of your training.” “Kind of racing stupid made me stronger, made me a little smarter later, but it also got my name out there a little bit.” “Being able to achieve what you set out to achieve that day is a success.” “I think the biggest thing for people transitioning out of sports is you don’t need to find the thing right away.” “The bike has done so much for me within my career but also, you know, mentally, physically, spiritually, it's connected me with people…and it's amazing what I've seen it do for people.” “With COVID, bikes have been a big hit.” “The programs we have are to give back to our community and to create experiences for people to use the products that we’re selling them.” “You can make your sport very much a part of your life and still have that love for it and just bring it out in different ways.” Links: The Pursuit of Gold homepage 5 Smart Strategies to Confidence Conquer Your Fear in 5 Days   Laura’s Social Media: Laura's Instagram Laura's Facebook page   Connect with Brad: Velo City Cycles Homepage Velo City Cycles Facebook Velo City Cycles Instagram Velo Kids Moms in Tow Homepage

Thanks to human biology, people become judge-y from time to time, and that’s okay because human brains just work that way. However, there is another path - a much more positive one - that can be taken along life’s journey! In this episode, host Dr. Laura Mach acknowledges that looking for problems can be a survival technique, but living life in a negative mindset does not let you enjoy yourself or your practice. As Laura says, no judgemental sentences you tell yourself “are going to put you in a proactive state where you are feeling motivated to make changes.”    During this introspective episode, Dr. Mach moves listeners from acknowledging judgemental behavior to a state of looking at life through a lens of curiosity so that improvements can be made. By asking helpful questions instead of saying how things “should” be, you will learn how you can see options for improving any situation that you are questioning. Changing how you look at things heightens your creativity, allowing you to better develop new solutions to what you would like to see happening differently.    Ready to get your confidence back? Your feelings come from what you are thinking - not from the actions of others! So it’s imperative that you think thoughts that boost your confidence. For example, being in a state of judgement of others makes you suffer: you feel angry because of what you’re thinking. However, if you look at a situation simply from the point of view of what makes you content, you can eliminate your anger! YOU are in control of your feelings! Get your control and your confidence back… listen to this episode now!   Highlights from this episode: Understanding self-judgement  How everyone loses in the comparison game Nothing good comes from the state of being judgemental Problems with jumping to conclusions and viewing life through a negative lens Letting your mind acknowledge negative things but move to a helpful place Rephrasing your view of situations from negative statements to curious thoughts, sparking creativity Understanding the concept of emotional adulthood Boosting your confidence through how you think about elements of your life   Resources and links mentioned:  Laura’s email: DrLauraMachDDS@gmail.com Laura’s website: LoveYourPractice.net Laura’s podcast: Love Your Practice! As a woman becomes a mother, breastfeeding is largely highlighted as one of the biggest ways to bond with your child, but what happens if you can't breastfeed? This is why Laura created Bobbie. On today’s episode, I have the pleasure of chatting with Laura Gassner Otting. Laura is a highly successful entrepreneur and author who inspires people to push past the doubt and indecision that ultimately keeps their great ideas in limbo. Starting her career off as a lawyer, Laura quickly decided to drop her educational endeavours and follow a life path instead, that she was truly meant for her. Laura delivers strategic thinking, well-honed wisdom, and perspective generated by decades of navigating change across nonprofit, political, as well as philanthropic landscapes. Laura dares listeners to find their voice, and generate the confidence needed to tackle larger-than-life challenges. On this episode we dive into: Figuring out what success means to you. How failure is not the finale. Finding comfort in knowing that, well … nobody really cares! Focusing on plan A instead of plan B. How confidence comes from competence. How to conquer the thought “I will be happy WHEN…” How to be better for other people by first, being better for yourself The take-home: Laura credits her success to carving her own path in life. She believes that by following her intuition and listening to what truly makes her happy, she can live a well-balanced and accomplished life. She started this life journey by saying no to things that weren’t serving her. As Laura continued to carve her path and listen to her heart, she found herself serving on Hillary Clinton’s National Finance Committee, and she was also asked to do a TEDx talk - which became so popular that it launched a speaking career for her! Laura has now spoken across the United States and internationally to universities, companies, conferences, accelerators, TEDx, and the US Military. “I feel like I spent a lot of time in my life trying to fit in everyone else’s box, trying to be perfect for everyone else.” She then adds, “People think they can only be worthy if they perform up to the expectations of others and it turns out that our worth really comes from the inside.” Laura continues to inspire others to push past the doubt and indecision and encourages people to serve others by first serving themselves. “I don't think we are exhausted because we’re busy, I think people are exhausted and burnt out because they are doing what's best for other people, instead of what’s best for themselves.” She claims that she is relentlessly and unapologetically selfish with making herself better first so that she can be the best version of herself, for others. Pushing through self-doubt, prioritizing yourself, and following a path that stays true to what YOU desire is exactly how you too, can carve out your own path towards success! We decided to talk about the Urban Wars this week because of a post that was made by Nora Roberts' publicist, Laura, on the J.D. Robb Facebook page. It would seem that because of the craziness of 2020 many people are asking whether or not we are in Urban Wars Territory. We completely understand why Laura is cranky. You can't really discuss an "Urban Wars" in the In Death Series without getting a little bit into what the politics may have been to start that happening. And once you start talking about politics, things get really tense. So, we do understand that occasionally, if you are a moderator of that kind of forum, you have to step in and sometimes get tough with people if things really start to get nasty. But anyway... Urban Wars! Given the entire history of mankind, it's really not a stretch to postulate that there might be another world war in the coming decades. So, Nora isn't necessarily psychic, just a good guesser!! As Laura said in her post, this is a fiction series, and Nora is not necessarily trying to predict things or make any kind of a political statement, but is just trying to write good fiction. We talk in this episode about some of the details that we know about the Urban Wars, and why things may have happened as they did. We talk about Summerset having been a medic during the Urban Wars and why that might have happened. We go off on a rant about fast food iced tea, pop, soda, and chicken fingers. Also: Put your kids in speech class. It's a very important skill to have.

Between the Ears

In the 1980s a young anthropologist entered the Amazon rainforest to try to find and live amongst a previously uncontacted tribe, known locally as the Outcasts. Feared by neighbouring groups through stories of secretiveness and violence, they were mythologised as spirit people. Laura's only companion on her trip was her nine-year-old daughter Emilia. Venturing deep into the forest, Laura and Emilia found the group and lived on their fringes for months. But with the Huaorani initially hostile and refusing to engage, Emilia became increasingly ill. Laura faced a life-defining decision: leave the forest with her daughter or send her away and stay alone. As Laura tells her incredible story, an immersive binaural forest soundscape guides the way. Recorded in the Amazon by multi-award-winning sound designer Gareth Fry and mixed with Laura's taped forest recordings, we join Laura on a surprising journey deep under the forest canopy. In midsummer week, Radio 3 enters one of the most potent sources of the human imagination. 'Into the Forest' explores the enchantment, escape and magical danger of the forest in summer, with slow radio moments featuring the sounds of the forest, allowing time out from today's often frenetic world.

This week marks one year out from the 2021 Paralympic Games in Tokyo, and Laura is deeply honored to welcome Gold Medal Paralympian, Brad Snyder, to the podcast today. A highly experienced competitive swimmer, Brad graduated from the US Naval Academy and was deployed to Iraq and later to Afghanistan as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Officer. After six months in Afghanistan, Brad sustained complete vision loss as a result of the explosion of an improvised explosive device (IED). What’s incredible about Brad is not what happened to him that fateful day, but as you will hear, how he responded to it. Brad begins by detailing his start in swimming, the impact that becoming the swim team captain in college had upon him, and how he found himself in the role of an EOD Officer. Brad then recounts the stories of his deployments, including the day of his injury, the effects of losing his sight, and his eventual return to swimming and rebuilding his identity. He and Laura discuss the power of celebrating the process as well as the outcomes in athletics, and Brad shares his Paralympic experiences, the reasons for writing his memoir, what he is up to these days, and just how the pandemic shutdown has affected him and his training. Brad concludes by recommending Ryan Holiday’s The Obstacle is the Way, a book for which he has the greatest respect. As Laura notes, Paralympians ‘have a unique strength of character that combines mental toughness, physical ability, and outstanding agility’ whose performances ‘often redefine the boundaries of possibility’. Brad Snyder embodies all of these qualities and more, as you will find out in this inspired and inspiring episode today. Episode Highlights: Brad’s start in swimming The impact of becoming his team’s leader His road to becoming an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Officer and his experiences in that role Brad’s deployments The day of his injury Existential depression vs. momentary frustration Brad’s return to the pool Losing his ability to serve and its impact on his sense of identity Rebuilding his identity Process and outcomes Brad’s Paralympic experiences and how they compare with each other His memoir Fire in My Eyes and his reasons for writing it What Brad is up to these days How the COVID-19 shutdown has affected him Ryan Holiday’s The Obstacle is the Way Quotes: “We’ve been water people my whole life.” “It was so humbling to go to the pool for the first time and watch what competitive swimming was all about.” “My bailiwick is leadership.” “In the modern era, what we do predominantly is the mitigation of explosive hazards in support of military operations worldwide.” “They were able to save my face, but they weren’t able to save my eyes, unfortunately…the good news is I walked away with my life.” “I’m never going to be who I was, and that shouldn’t prevent me from being who I am.” “So much of our frustration in our daily lives comes from a mismatch of expectation.” “It felt nice to go back to doing something I was good at.” “Statistically, I actually think my blind times may be as or faster than my able-bodied times.” “I felt like I belonged…I felt fulfilled.” “You have to be vulnerable. You have to learn how to make a mistake, but then vow not to do it again, and to learn something from it.” “I love how you just keep challenging yourself.” “We’re on the road to Tokyo full force.” Links: The Pursuit of Gold homepage: http://thepursuitofgold.com/ Laura’s Social Media: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lala_the_diver Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheLauraWilkinson Connect with Brad: Website: https://www.bradsnyder.us/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bradsnyderusa/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/BradSnyderUSA Brad’s book: https://www.amazon.com/Fire-My-Eyes-Warrior-s-Battlefield/dp/0306825147/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1480371142&sr=8-1&keywords=fire+in+my+eyes Ryan Holiday’s The Obstacle is the Way: https://www.amazon.com/Obstacle-Way-Ancient-Adversity-Advantage/dp/1781251495/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=the+obstacle+is+the+way&qid=1598055918&sr=8-2

Laura is Britain's top middle-distance runner and Scotland's top female athlete who was considered a great prospect for a medal at this year's Olympics before it was postponed. She is also a qualified veterinary surgeon. In this episode she explains how she managed to juggle two such demanding pursuits, and how each one helped her excel in the other. Laura wasn't considered a great athletic prospect growing up. She was a solid if unspectacular runner who wasn't even the best in her school. But when Laura got to university and started working with a coach, her progress was meteoric and now she is among the very best middle-distance runners in the world. As Laura says, that shows how we all develop at our own pace and why loving what you do and sticking at it is often more important than early talent. In this episode Laura explains how she balanced qualifying to be a vet with her running career in 2018, and why learning to prioritise is key. She also talks about the value of not overthinking and choosing to enjoy what you do rather than putting too much pressure on yourself to succeed, which paradoxically makes it more likely that you will succeed. She talks about being conscious of your priorities and sticking to them as well as keeping a level head, asking yourself questions to reduce how stressed you feel, running to clear the mind, routine and being the best version of yourself you can be and not worrying what others think. Have you ever had something about yourself that you don't think is that big of deal, but when you share it, everyone else seems to think it is a big deal? That's Mike and me with drinking. Or not drinking, as the case may be. Our most popular episode of The Kate & Mike Show of 2019 BY FAR was the one we did about Sobriety, Substances, and Choosing to Live Awake (episode 137) in which Mike shared his sordid journey with drugs and alcohol, and I shared mine (not so sordid but still worth mentioning). That's why we're kicking off 2020 with back-to-back episodes on sobriety. Last week we talked with Holly Whitaker about our culture's f'd up relationship with alcohol and the ways in which the traditional, patriarchal structures of recovery don't serve everyone. This week we're back with an equally powerful episode with memoirist Laura McKowen about her journey with addiction, getting sober, and then falling deeply in love with her sober life. As Laura shares, she thought that sobriety was a sentence for a sad existence without fun or sex or truly living. Until her life required her to get sober and discover the truth: that sobriety is an invitation to a truer, more beautiful life, not a sentence. You don't have to want to get sober in order to get the gold from this episode, though I would totally cheer you on if you do! In the episode you'll hear: • What Laura did about the shame she was carrying from the things that happened while she was drinking • How we forgive ourselves for things we think are unforgivable • How to actually feel your feelings and why they won't kill you (and what opportunities lie on the other side) • About the beauty and possibilities of a sober life • Laura's story of getting a book deal (I always have to ask some business questions) I'm really excited for you to get to soak in the beauty and wisdom of Laura. Laura is passionate about spreading the message that love never dies, as you'll find out in our conversation, which is in parts heartbreaking and uplifting, as Laura gifts us with story upon story about the ways Alex, her only child, shows her he is still alive, albeit in some other place. "I am with you, and without you, Mum," he poetically told her, in one mystical meeting... As Laura tells me, "We have to learn a new vocabulary between our world and their world." Welcome to Season 2 Episode 4 of the Creative Business Success Podcast! I'm super excited to introduce you to Laura today. In case you missed the Accelerate Your Creative Biz Summit in spring 2019, Laura was one of the speakers and she had so many fantastic nuggets of wisdom that I knew I needed to have her on the podcast as well. Today, she's going to be giving you her best tips for increasing referrals - aka essentially free advertising! - to get new clients in your creative business. It may not be what you immediately think of, either, so don't miss this one! Here's a cheat sheet of some of the episode highlights:Laura's intro, 1:04Get access to Laura's summit session, 2:12Laura's secret to increasing referrals, 2:59Laura's story of increasing photography referrals, 4:27How client experience helps increase referrals, 7:12Can a neutral client experience decrease referrals? 9:08Client communication is key! 10:32Why you need a standardized client experience, 11:58Do you use your clients' first names? 14:55Do you struggle with email marketing? 16:19Why managing your energy is crucial for referrals, 16:54You can transfer your energy to your clients! 20:23You need to create a referral program, 22:14Be proactive and not reactive in your creative business, 25:20Give memorable client gifts after a project, 27:35Laura's closing thoughts on increasing referrals, 29:42Where to connect with Laura, 33:15Let's dive deeper into a few of these key takeaways...1 | Client experience is crucial to referrals! No matter what kind of creative business you run, a good client experience can make or break when it comes to getting referrals. If someone has a bad client experience, you'll get negative word of mouth, but if they have a so-so client experience, they just won't talk about it at all! As Laura's experience shows, having a stellar client experience can net you dozens or even hundreds of additional referrals than you would get otherwise. You can start with something as simple as addressing your potential clients by name. Do this in email, in person, and when referring to them on social media or to other people. That little bit of personalization can go a long way!Do you provide a fantastic client experience for your customers? If it's not the kind of experience that they HAVE to tell their friends about (and thus send you referrals!), it's time to step up your game and make it outstanding!2 | You need a standardized workflowAgain, no matter what kind of creative business you have, this is key. Without a standardized workflow, it's a lot harder to provide a stellar client experience! You end up scrambling, forgetting things, and letting your clients down. And no one wants that!If you don't have a workflow in place (and hopefully at least partially automated!), Laura and I strongly encourage you to get that set up. If you're a photographer, Laura has workflow guides, email templates, and more in her shop.Bonus tip: if you're an artist, photographer, or designer, I highly recommend Dubsado to help you automate your workflows. It's a tool created for creative entrepreneurs by creative entrepreneurs that helps you with everything from lead capture to invoicing and workflow management. It can be a serious sanity saver!Take a moment to create or update your creative business workflows today! Taking that time now can increase your referrals tenfold down the road.3 | Get a referral program set up!It's easy to think that referrals will be organic and 'just happen.' That's not always how it goes, though! It's always best to JUST ASK. If you don't ask, it's easy for your clients to forget to send you referrals. After all, how often do you remember to leave a review for something you love? Yeah, I usually forget too.By creating an official referral program, you're reminding people to do it and giving them an extra incentive to remember and intentionally send you referrals. Giving great client gifts that they'll use regularly is a great way to build on this, too.If you sell products online, you can even set up an affiliate program, making it even easier for customers to refer new business to you! Here at The Creative Entrepreneurs L.A.B., I use the AffiliateWP plugin to manage my affiliate program for the Thriving Creatives LAB and shop. If you want to create your own affiliate program for your creative business but aren't sure where to start, email me at hello@thecelab.com and I'll share my tips!Simply asking for referrals from happy customers and setting up an official referral program or affiliate program can make a huge difference in increasing your referrals!Want to connect with Laura? You can find her on her website, and on Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest @lauraleecreative. Isn’t it interesting that, often in our younger years, we feel as if we should be able to “Win the World in a Weekend!” Many of us get caught in the thinking that we have to really make a difference, make our lives count, and so we work, work work. Becoming workaholics, we disguise it as “passion,” and neglect or take for granted the things and people who really matter most.  If we are fortunate, and paying attention, as we grow and experience new things, we come to understand there’s more to life than the work we are doing. This is one of the personal stories Ed shares during this episode with Laura.  As a younger pastor, with a young and growing family, Ed had a sense that his family life was important, but more in the way of having responsibility for it rather than truly understanding it was intended to be a higher priority for his time and energy than his work in the church.  Laura asks him about a particular story he told in his book, One Small Barking Dog, about a powerful encounter with the Holy Spirit while tending to his wife who was not feeling well. The experience was beyond his imagination at the time but turned out to create a significant shift in his perspective on his “work” and what he was called to do in the world.  Ed goes on to share several nuggets of wisdom he has gleaned along the journey, including these: Learning is like seeds; we need to nurture them and allow them to grow within us first, before passing along what we’ve learned. A few minutes of stillness and quiet would re-energize him after a long day at work and before engaging with his wife and children. God is everywhere all the time, and often his work is hidden; we don’t get to see what’s really going on in all things around us, but there is definitely more afoot than what we see.  As Laura and Ed near the end of a conversation filled with laughter, insight, and a few Bible verses, Ed shares this thought: “Everyone is in a battle. We have no idea what other people are going through, afraid of, challenged by, or working on… Simply be kind.”  He and Laura both share stories of when an opportunity to be kind presented themselves in their respective lives and how they responded. It doesn’t take much to change the course of someone’s day if we are paying attention to what’s happening around us and who we are with. And, in fact, those simple actions may actually change the course of someone’s life for generations into the future!  Resources Mentioned: One Small Barking Dog  Other books by Ed Gungor  The Order of St. Anthony    About Ed: Ed Gungor is a veteran pastor who focuses on philosophy, church history and current trends. He became a follower of Christ as a teenager in the early 1970’s and has been deeply involved in the spiritual formation of others for over forty years. Ed has a passion for authentic transformation; a phenomenon he feels is all too rare in today’s church. As a kind of “church futurist,” he is constantly aware of the changing needs of the next generation of Christians, the ones who haven’t yet experienced spiritual formation. To effectively communicate the gospel to this group, he believes our notion of “destiny” in the American church needs to be re-imagined. Ed longs to see believers willing to abandon their Christianized versions of the self-important American Dream, embracing instead the miraculous, surprising, and contagious Christianity that comes when they see themselves as the servants of God who find their home with Messiah and his people, as they participate in the mission of God (missio Dei). Ed is known for his down-to-earth, engaging communication style. With transparency and his own unique brand of wry humor, he cuts through the usual “church-speak”, gleefully slaughtering any sacred cows that distort the true message of Christ. He is the author of several books, including: Religiously Transmitted Diseases: Finding A Cure When Faith Doesn’t Feel Right; The Vow: An Ancient Path Of Spiritual Formation That Still Transforms Today; the New York Times bestseller, There is More to the Secret; and One Small Barking Dog. Ed and his wife Gail have been married forty-two years. They have four children, eight grandchildren and live in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Ed currently serves as the Bishop of the Diocese of St. Anthony (dicoceseofstanthony.com).

Why is the dishwasher the "a**hole" of the restaurant? Who is the Duner Lunar? Who is Lil’ Skittles? Just a few of so many vital questions we tackle in Episode 114 with Chef Laura Fonner of Duner's in Ivy. As you can see from the important issues listed, our conversation was lively and warm. Much like a visit to Duner’s, where since 1983 owner Bob Caldwell and his staff have served up warm food and ambience to locals and tourists alike. Only open Wednesday to Sunday. With a menu that changes daily. A place where a person can be a regular. A place where you feel taken care of. A true neighborhood establishment. A combination becoming increasingly unheard of in such a competitive food region. Their oldest waitress has worked 30 years. The rest of the staff have been there at least 15. Again, something unheard of in an industry where revolving doors are common. Why the longevity? One reason is Owner Bob, who allows kitchen staff to spread their wings, experiment, try out stuff. He trusts them. Which means their incredibly large menu changes on a dime. That yummy thing you ate 3 weeks ago? Laura probably doesn’t remember. This variety keeps staff from getting bored and it turns customers into regulars. Because it’s a different restaurant every night. Working in a kitchen takes a toll. There are 16-hour days. Backs get injured. There are scars and bad knees and plantar fasciitis. Laura almost died giving birth. She experienced terrible physical and emotional pain, but survived with a renewed sense of reflection and purpose, eventually finding solace in her work once again. Cooking on the line. Feeding people. All of it has made her a stronger person and a better chef. Laura shares this amazing story with me, speaking with such courage and vulnerability. I’m honored and grateful to have heard it. Part of Chef Fonner’s continued self-care is giving back to the community. Organizing weekly shelter meals through PACEM, working alongside Charlottesville Women in Food, has shown her that having your dream job, feeding people and hanging out with friends, can also be shared within a bigger arena. As Laura says, not all of us have a lot of time. But we all have a little bit. Put all those little bits together and you have quite a lot. Contact Laura Fonner at Duner’s if you’d like to help serve, or have a food or monetary donation. Let’s spread some of that upbeat feeling around as much as we can. Being around Laura’s energy for an afternoon helped me understand why she and her kitchen staff work so well together. Because it was all just so damn much fun. Cheers. Before today's episode of Turning Lemons Into Lemonade, I had never met Laura Pennington.  It turns out that she is one of the savviest women building a business that I've interviewed on my show.  We had SO much in common that it felt like I was talking to myself in a lot of ways. First, Laura talked about how she built her writing business as a freelancer while she still was working in corporate.  Then she talked about how despite making more as a part time freelancer than she did in her full time job, she still was afraid to cut the cord and leave the steady bi-weekly paycheck!  We talked about the mindset that we often have about our steady paychecks - and despite having demand for our product or service, that it is still hard to think of building a business that is successful enough to support us consistently! Laura also talked about something I discuss frequently - scaling a successful business that really isn't in alignment with how she wanted to live her life.  You often find that money isn't everything - and that if business growth and business success is actually costing you in your quality of life, that it probably isn't the right thing.  She talked about how both she and her husband (who is a doctor) made very conscious life choices that led them to better quality of life - and not necessarily more income! As Laura was talking about how she juggles building a business - her freelance business and her coaching business, we talked about productivity hacks to help her manage her busy day.  She had some great advice for women business owners - find a mentor who has done what you want to do - not just one who has done something cool!  If you get one who has done something cool - they often think you need to do it their way!  Find one that is RIGHT for where you are in the business. She also advised that you find the things that are most important and do them at the time of day when you are your best!  If you're a morning person - do them then! If you're a night person - do your highest impact activities then.  Understand who you are and build your business and life around you to generate true success and happiness!

As Laura's kids were starting to engage more on electronic devices, she noticed a lack of guidance on best practices for handling this aspect of parenting, so she made her own! She advocates teaching your children to handle this responsibility at a younger age, when their mistakes are still small and they may be more receptive to your guidance. One piece of advice she's given to her kids that everyone could heed is not to do or say anything on a device that you wouldn't want a roomful of your peers and their parents to read! She has created a tool for soliciting feedback from your children's peer group to help other parents become familiar with what other families limits are around technology and help drive the conversation forward. Planning ahead helps us reach our goals, and although we can’t prepare for everything, a plan gives us a general direction to travel and can even help us identify a final destination. In this week’s episode, we hear from Laura who has helped her son Jonathon plan ahead. This planning has enabled him to create a vision for his independent future, as well as prepare for the unexpected. We start Laura’s story with Jonathan at primary school struggling to access education but finally, after a legal fight, he was placed in a school which could provide the support he needed. Jonathon is now 19 and just about to leave full-time education. Laura spoke about a variety of issues they have worked on related to independence including cooking, cleaning, shopping and learning to drive. Laura talks about enabling her son to be independent but in a very structured way. One important part of Laura’s strategy was always planning ahead, particularly when it comes to thinking about work.  She suggests sitting down with your child and talking about what they want to do and to making a list. Don’t just leap into the dark, instead, take time and think about it, brainstorm and write it all down. Then, go through the list together and consider each option carefully. Once you’ve done this, you’re ready to plan with a purpose, and you can use the plan as the basis to start moving forward. Planning five years ahead, or even ten, might sound difficult but working out where you want your young person to be in five/ten years’ time and how you’re going to help them get there is surely better than hoping it all works out in the end. As Laura says, “..never concentrate on the present, it’s the future you’ve got to always be thinking about.” Visit www.journeyskills.com for more information and resources to help lead your child with additional needs toward greater independence.

Laura Hall is one talented musician, one of the (many) things that makes her unique is her incredible influence on the comedy world. From being a pianist for 'The Second City’ to the band leader on ‘Whose Line Is It Anyway?’ her music has accompanied some of the most iconic comedic shows. You’d think this meant she came from a musically driven house hold, but that’s not the case. As Laura mentions in this episode, she thinks her father is tone deaf and she begged and begged for piano lessons. Well, that sure did pay off! You guys need to check out her band ‘The Sweet Potatoes’ and listen to this Firecracker light up the stage!

My dear friend and fellow masterminder, Laura Lilly, has over 10 years of experience working with non profit organizations. After working for a traditional consulting firm for the past eight years serving mid-sized nonprofits (like YMCAs, independent schools, hospitals, and retirement communities), she started her own company, Spring, to offer consulting services to startup and small nonprofits. Listen as Laura shares her journey and advice for gaining fast momentum as a new business. Mission: The best entrepreneurial ventures blend your WHY for you and your WHY for the world. With Spring, Laura has done just that.  She paired her desire to create an online business and have flexibility to stay home with her young family, with the desire to help smaller nonprofits get the resources and momentum they need to make the impact they envision. Mindset: Inspired to make the year ahead one of joy, Laura became much more intentional with where she spent her time and energy. While at a yoga class, she heard the lyrics, “Be strong, be kind, be brave. Know that it’s alright to be afraid.” Adopting those lyrics as her mantra, she found the courage to do more big and scary things to create more meaningful success. Marketing: Interviewing prospective clients has been the most eye-opening activity that Laura has done within the business. Gaining a true understanding of the pains, needs and even the exact words that her customers are using, is propelling Spring forward much faster. Momentum: At the time of this interview, Spring was only 1 month old but already experiencing so much momentum. Laura shares the even in that short time, the biggest momentum to date has been the overwhelmingly positive feedback that she’s received from those within the nonprofit industry. Masterminds: Laura and I have been masterminding together for several months. I love how she relates our mastermind to the feeling of having co-founders. We truly have all been in the trenches together for both the big decisions and the small details. She shares the courage and bravery that having a mastermind has provided. Mastermind Challenge: So many entrepreneurs rack their brains trying to figure out what their clients want and need. As Laura has shown, you just need to ASK. Send out a survey using a platform like Survey Monkey or Google Forms. Even better, invite a few of them out for coffee or lunch. You’ll be surprised how forthcoming they are with information that not only helps YOU, but helps you better serve THEM.  We’re all in this together!
