Hannah Grant, with the Animal Law Firm, interviews Michelle Mansini, the Education Coordinator at the Wolf Sanctuary of PA! The Sanctuary is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing the best habitat and care for their wolves.
Wolves are beautiful animals, but if you want to have one as a pet, like the popular show “Game of Thrones,” you need to make sure you meet the minimum requirements. Deanna Deppen, executive director of Shy Wolf Sanctuary Education and Experience Center in Naples, recently talked to Matt Austin and Ginger Gadsden on Florida's Fourth Estate about the challenges she faces when people are not able to care for the wolves they adopt. “Florida actually requires licensing, so you should not have a full wolf without having two and a half acres of land, 500 hours working with them, 10-foot fences and an 8-foot perimeter fence,” Deppen said. Wolves need more space than your house can provide. “In the wild, they can travel up to 120 miles per day, up to 40 miles per hour, and they have needs where they need to stay active.” Wolf dogs, or dogs that are bred with wolves, can also pose unforeseen problems when people need to put them up for adoption. “Shelters won't adopt them out. They'll put them down. Other rescues won't take them—they consider them unadoptable, they just have nowhere else to go,” Deppen said. That's where her sanctuary comes in. She said it has been around for a long time. Now, she is planning and preparing to move to a new 17-acre property. The move will be expensive and the sanctuary is asking people to step in and help sponsor the animals, or even come in and volunteer. To join the wolf pack, click here for more information. The Shy Wolf Sanctuary Education & Experience Center in Naples got its start in 1993 when founders Nancy and Kent Smith began taking in animals that were not accepted by government animal services, wildlife rehabilitators, or zoos. In its 30 years Shy Wolf has rescued more than 1260 animals, as well as providing educational experiences to tens of thousands of visitors from around the world from its small property of just a few acres. We talk with its Executive Director, Deanna Deppen, to learn more about the work they do, how they managed during Hurricane Ian, and their plans to grow — including their fundraising effort to build a hurricane shelter for Southwest Florida pets.
“There are written documents that talk about how the same wolf follows a flock of sheep for 300 miles and they come back again with that flock of sheep. And those shepherds can identify those wolves. And within the group, they've even given the names to those wolves… And they have this saying: Don't do something wrong, the Wolf God is watching you.” - Prabhat Sinha Prabhat Sinha grew up swimming after ducks and fish in a rural farming village in Mhaswad, India. At 13, he left for the US, learned English, became a competitive high school athlete and then went on to Georgetown University. He became a sports agent for NBA players and Olympians and he was really good at it. But, he knew it wasn't enough. He knew that sports had given him the opportunities that changed his life and he wanted the same thing for other kids from rural India. So, he made his way home and set up Mann Deshi Champions, a sports academy that has developed over 8000 athletes from rural India. Since his return, he's noticed that many of the animals that he frequently saw in his youth are increasingly rare to spot. Animals like wolves, jackals and hyenas are disappearing from the landscape, and that disheartening observation has led to Prabhat's latest endeavor, a farmer led Wolf Sanctuary project. And, like everything else Prabhat does, it is astonishing. Please listen and share. The BS We Feed Ourselves — Gut/Brain healing for overachievers
Summary: Today we have a guest who has gone into the “dark woods” and made it out the other side. There he learned that individuals and organizations can DO and BE ANYTHING, if two things are in place: a model of success, and the tools to reach it. He's dramatically improved the lives of over 500,000 individuals struggling with depression, PTSD, and other health issues. He's an Anthropologist, as well as the founder of Wolf Tribe Institute… AND, yes! He works with wolves on a regular bases: Philip Folsom! How to Listen: Stay up-to-date on the latest episodes by subscribing on iTunes. You can also find us on Apple Podcast, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify and more. What We Discuss: 00:01:54:00 - "If you want to grow and develop and transform yourself or get healthy, you have to enter the woods at the scariest, most bleak, shadow-filled place. Which is of course what we try to avoid, which is why change is so hard." 00:05:53:11 - The female orgasm. 00:09:48:03 - Phillip explains what the "dark woods" means. 00:09:48:05 - The raw resistance of fear is why we can't change diet, lifestyles, lovers. 00:10:16:23 - It takes a death of self. Death is a terrifying thing to do by yourself. It takes someone else. 00:11:10:17 - Alcoholism journey 00:12:13:11 - Willpower is a muscle. it's not a finite resource. you have to work on it. 00:16:25:21 - Phillip Discusses the lack of "sickness" in indigenous tribes. 00:17:40:22 - Kinship vs Ego 00:19:16:16 - "It's impossible for us to KNOW more than 70 people" discussion. 00:20:38:22 - People "have" the planet because “we got really good at bonding”. 00:22:04:24 - Dire wolf skull 00:22:32:12 - Explanation of how your brain responds to the scariest thing on the planet: humans. 00:26:11:04 - A week, a month, a decade awash in stress hormones... 00:26:33:08 - Low Grade Chronic Stress is making everyone sick 00:28:36:22 - Autoimmune issues and PTSD survivors 00:38:00:20 - Loneliness leads to cortisol 00:38:47:10 - Shame regulates behavior 00:41:31:13 - Pride based systems are not time tested. Defender Radio: The Podcast for Wildlife Advocates and Animal Lovers
Wolves are one of the most majestic creatures on the planet. They’re intelligent, social, and thrilling to watch whether roaming their territory, hunting as a pack, or teaching pups the ins and outs of play. Some people love these animals so much that they want one in their home, and buy wolves bred in captivity, or wolf-dog hybrids. And according to the WOLF Sanctuary in Colorado, that’s when things can go wrong. More than 100 wolves or wolf-dog hybrids have found a home at the Sanctuary since it opened, and the dedicated staff and volunteers have helped find a safe place for thousands of others. Many of these individuals were born in profit-driven breeding operations, sold to well-meaning and loving families, and ultimately surrendered to the WOLF Sanctuary by owners who were unable to care for an animal that isn’t entirely domestic, and isn’t entirely wild. Dr. Shelley Coldiron, Executive Director of the WOLF Sanctuary, joined Defender Radio to discuss the difficulties people find in raising wolf-dog hybrids, what special needs they have, the daily operations of running the sanctuary, and the individual personalities, quirks, and lives of the animals in their care.
Defender Radio: The Podcast for Wildlife Advocates and Animal Lovers
A funny thread emerged when we compiled this week's episode of Defender Radio: the lines in our lives. While listening to the interviews, we realized that there are so many crossovers when discussing animal welfare, advocacy and activism. Cary Rentola of the WOLF Sanctuary draws a line between wanting to be close to nature and bringing it too close; Dr. Hal Herzog explores the lines we set up between the pets in our lives, the wildlife we protect and the animals many continue to eat; and Dylan Powell discusses the lines we sometimes must draw to protest wrongdoings. Defender Radio is presented by Gates Wildlife Control and The Association for the Protection of Fur-Bearing Animals.
