On a chilly January night in 1932, a wealthy industrialist named Howard Woolverton was snatched from his car by kidnappers. When he was released unharmed the next day, his apparent lack of concern for the capture of his abductors led many to believe he was attempting to halt the investigation. J. Edgar Hoover would later name George Kelly Barnes, aka "Machine Gun Kelly" and his wife Kathryn as participants in his abduction, but evidence suggests other notorious gangsters were also involved, and the case itself has never officially been solved. My guest Kevin Meredith collaborated with Woolverton's grandson David W. Hendry to write “Under Penalty of Death: The Untold Story of Machine Gun Kelly's First Kidnapping.” In this interview he theorizes about why Hoover might have ignored other possible suspects, including Verne Miller and Frank "Jelly" Nash, and explains how this little-known kidnapping, along with the Lindbergh kidnapping that followed closely on its heels, helped usher in the 1932 Federal Kidnapping Act.The author's publisher page: https://iupress.org/9781684351992/under-penalty-of-death/This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/4698315/advertisement

By Adam Turteltaub Most of the time people look at the termination of a problematic employee as solving a problem. Bob Woolverton of Top Tier Leadership Training believes that thinking is a mistake. As he points out in this podcast, it's not an end point. Instead, it's the time to start, if you haven't already, assessing how the organization got to this point. The employee's supervisor was responsible for ensuring the worker's success and safeguarding his or her welfare. The termination begs several questions the manager should be asking: What should or could I have done to prevent this from happening? What is my culpability? If it's a policy violation, am I certain the employee understood the policy, or did we just have him/her sign off? Did the policy not make sense in this environment? Was there an opportunity for misapprehension or misapplication? The bottom line it is the time to start a reassessment process. On an ongoing basis he recommends organizations' managers take a “rudder tap” approach. What this means, in practice, is providing small adjustments to course when things begin to go awry, rather than waiting until things are so far off that a bad outcome is inevitable. Making this method successful requires fostering an environment where people – both employees and managers – understand that corrections can be positive and a part of a healthy corporate culture. Listen in to learn more about how a termination can lead to a process of positive change for the organization.
In one of the most remarkable feats ever performed by a frozen dessert, Halo Top ice cream became the best-selling pint in America just six years after launch. Its founder Justin Woolverton was a frustrated lawyer who developed the recipe in his Cuisinart, mixing Stevia, egg whites and fruit into a low-calorie treat that tasted good enough to sell. Many recipes later—some runny, some rock-hard—Justin got the ice cream into stores; and soon, social media was flooded with images of people polishing off the 300-calorie pints. After outselling Häagen-Dazs and Ben & Jerry's in 2017, Halo Top's charisma faded, and a slew of new competitors entered the field. In 2019, Justin sold the company for an undisclosed amount, and now enjoys his ice cream at a less frenetic pace. Tom Jewell and Bruce Woolverton met as college kids in 1975, then lived on Manhattan's upper west side from '77 to '84, when they moved to Seattle. Bruce worked in the telecom industry initially, then in business development for startups. Bruce always worked as a fundraiser in some capacity, at various nonprofits such as The Nature Conservancy and the Northwest AIDS Foundation in its early days. Through luck and timing, they were able to buy a cottage on the water on Vashon Island (in 1989) and were early adopters of VRBO as a way to enjoy a wonderful place and have a bit of income to help pay for it. They eventually bought a condo in Ketchum Idaho (Sun Valley ski resort town) as Bruce is a big skier; it was a great place that they loved, with a boost from rental income to make it possible. That's how they came to buy the condo they are now living in Buenos Aires. Up until the pandemic and our retirement, they did very well with vacation rentals and were able to enjoy the place for a week or two most years. Now they are spending October thru April here in Argentina, and May-September on Vashon Island.· Buenos Aires is known as the "gay capital" of South America, with a thriving LGBTQ+ community.· Same-sex marriage has been legal in Argentina since 2010, making it the first country in Latin America to legalize same-sex marriage.· Argentina also has laws prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.· The annual Buenos Aires Pride Parade is one of the largest LGBTQ+ events in South America, attracting thousands of participants and spectators.· The city has a vibrant LGBTQ+ nightlife, with many bars, clubs, and events catering to the community.· LGBTQ+ rights organizations in Buenos Aires include the Argentine Federation of LGBT Rights and the Buenos Aires LGBT Chamber of Commerce.· Buenos Aires is also home to several LGBTQ+ landmarks, such as the iconic Obelisk monument, which is often lit up in rainbow colors to celebrate Pride Month.Support the showIf you enjoy these podcasts, please make a donation by clicking the coffee cup on any page of our website www.wheredogaysretire.com. For centuries the lore and legend of giant skeletons swirled around the archeological and paranormal communities. Tales of mound builders and mound destroyers finding enormous skeletal remains hidden deep with the small to massive structures have popped up in over 1,500 newspaper articles in the late 1800's to early 1900's and even into modern times. Who were these ancient ones who roamed North America and beyond? How did they get here? Why did the Native Americans fear and revere them? Why is Ohio the center of for all of the mounds? Workmen in the employ of the Fergusson Construction Company excavating for the new Toledo and Ottawa Beach Railroad, a little beyond the city limits of Toledo, Ohio, unearthed three skeletons, evidently relics of some great race, as they were about seven feet in length. Just where the ears should be on the head are singular bony protuberances which curl forward. The finds were made in solid yellow clay about eight feet below the surface. The cut is through a large mound, not half of which has yet been torn up. Several stone tomahawks of large size have been picked up in the locality. A mound near Toledo, Ohio held 20 skeletons, seated and facing east with jaws and teeth “twice as large as those of present-day people” and beside each was a large bowl with curiously wrought hieroglyphic figures. The Hocking sentinel. Logan, Ohio, April 28, 1898, pg 2 Toledo 3 Giant Skeletons Research done by Rephaim23 Alexandria Gazette, Alexandria D. C. October 26, 1895 Cayuga Chief, 30 April 1898, pg 1. American Antiquarian, Volume 3., 1880. ‘twice as large”. TIFFIN, Nov. 18. — While engaged in excavating a cellar on Webster Street the workmen exhumed a mammoth skeleton, indicating that the individual who formerly possessed the osseous frame- work was over seven feet in height Whether it was that of a white man or an Indian could not be definitely ascertained, as most of the bones crumbled soon after being exposed to the air, and before they could be examined by those conversant with the methods of distinguishing the skeletons of the aborigines from those of their white brothers. Certain it is that the remains had been interred so long as to spoil every chance for a sensation based upon some half traditional or wholly mythical tragedy. Springfield, O., April 7.—A giant skeleton of a man has been unearthed on the Woolverton farm, a short distance from Tippecanoe City. It measures eight feet from the top of the leg to the ankles, the feet being missing. The skull Is large enough to fit as a helmet over the average man's head. This skeleton was one of seven found buried In a circle, their feet being pointed toward the center. Crude implements were near. The skeletons are thought to be those of mound builders. Si-Te-Cah According to Northern Paiute oral history, the Si-Te-Cah, Saiduka or Sai'i are a legendary tribe whose mummified remains were allegedly discovered under four feet of guano by guano miners in what is now known as Lovelock Cave near Lovelock, Nevada, United States. Although the cave had been mined since 1911, miners did not notify authorities until 1912. The miners destroyed many of the artifacts, but archaeologists were still able to retrieve 10,000 Northern Paiute artifacts from the cave. Items included tule duck decoys, sandals, and baskets, several dating back over 2,000 years. Oral history According to the Northern Paiutes, the Si-Te-Cah were a red-haired band of cannibals. The Si-Te-Cah and the Paiutes were at war, and after a long struggle, a coalition of tribes trapped the remaining Si-Te-Cah in Lovelock Cave. When they refused to come out, the Paiutes piled brush before the cave mouth and set it aflame. The Si-Te-Cah were annihilated. Sarah Winnemucca, daughter of Paiute Chief Winnemucca, wrote about what she described as "a small tribe of barbarians" who ate her people in her book Life Among the Paiutes: Their Wrongs and Claims. She wrote that "after my people had killed them all, the people around us called us Say-do-carah. It means conqueror; it also means 'enemy.' My people say that the tribe we exterminated had reddish hair. I have some of their hair, which has been handed down from father to son. I have a dress that has been in our family for a great many years, trimmed with reddish hair. I am going to wear it sometime when I lecture. It is called a mourning dress, and no one has such a dress but my family." Winnemucca does not mention giants.

Building on our discussion of the Red Queen hypothesis last week, we're going to go through a theorem which is similarly chess-themed but goes against our hypothesis from episode 20. This theory holds that, rather than continual evolution being necessary for a species to survive, natural selection can sometimes allow genes to be lost from the gene pool. This week on On Story we’ll hear from screenwriting duo Scott Beck and Bryan Woods on how the classic silent films of Charlie Chaplin and Jacques Tati and the board game Monopoly inspired 2018’s biggest horror hit A Quiet Place. Later we’ll hear from Veteran screenwriter Linda Woolverton who is responsible for writing some of Disney’s most beloved films; Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, and Maleficent. Filmmakers Scott Beck and Bryan Woods first met as sixth-graders in their hometown of Bettendorf, Iowa. The two quickly began a creative collaboration that continues today. Most recently the pair wrote the screenplay for A Quiet Place. The film stars Emily Blunt and John Krasinski as a husband and wife who are forced to raise a family in a post apocalyptic world surrounded by monsters who hunt anything that makes a noise. The horror film was one of 2018’s biggest hits – it received critical acclaim and grossed over $300 million. Filmmaker Christopher Boone spoke with Beck and Woods about writing the genre script at the 25th Annual Austin Film Festival in 2018. In 1991 she wrote her first animated feature, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. The film won a Golden Globe and became the first animated film to be nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards®. She continued her success with Disney by contributing to the scripts for The Lion King, Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey and Mulan. More recently, Woolverton wrote the screenplays for Tim Burton’s live-action Alice in Wonderland and 2014’s Maleficent which starred Angelina Jolie.
