Jesus Calling Part 5: Strengthen What Is About to Die By Louie Marsh, 12-1-2024 Last slide – hypocrisy word cloud. 1) Jesus holds the Spirit of LIFE. “1“And to the angel of the church in Sardis write: ‘The words of him who has the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. “(Revelation 3:1a, ESV) Verse NOT on outline! “63It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.” (John 6:63, ESV) 2) Jesus sees and knows their HYPOCRISY. . “ ‘I know your works. You have the reputation of being alive, but you are dead.” (Revelation 3:1b, ESV) · When I allow APPEARANCES to be different from what really is – I'm a hypocrite. “27“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people's bones and all uncleanness. 28So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.” (Matthew 23:27–28, ESV) Slide defining hypocrisy. Hypocrisy is baked into the church and other institutions – My ego plus people want to put you on a pedestal. 3) I need to WAKE UP before it's too late. “2Wake up, and strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your works complete in the sight of my God. (Revelation 3:2, ESV) · Wake up – we've been sleeping – in denial. γρηγορεῖν is to be awake when one is aroused. The latter word is used here. The Lord is right now arousing the church. The present imperative demands that it continue in this wakefulness. - R. C. H. Lenski, The Interpretation of St. John's Revelation “11Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed.” (Romans 13:11, ESV) · Strengthen – it's there, but it's weak and sick and needs help. The aorist imperative στήριξον means to take strong, immediate, effective measures. “To make decisively firm” all that is ready to die completely conveys the idea of establishing it with new life and vitality so that it may be able to shake off this creeping death and to stand solidly against its inroads. - R. C. H. Lenski, The Interpretation of St. John's Revelation “6“I will strengthen the house of Judah, and I will save the house of Joseph. I will bring them back because I have compassion on them, and they shall be as though I had not rejected them, for I am the Lord their God and I will answer them.” (Zechariah 10:6, ESV) · About to die – there is a time limit, a point of no return here. I don't want to cross it. 4) REMEMBER & repent or else! “3Remember, then, what you received and heard. Keep it, and repent. If you will not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come against you.” (Revelation 3:3, ESV) 5) The ETERNAL blessings awaiting the conqueror. “4Yet you have still a few names in Sardis, people who have not soiled their garments, and they will walk with me in white, for they are worthy. 5The one who conquers will be clothed thus in white garments, and I will never blot his name out of the book of life. I will confess his name before my Father and before his angels.” (Revelation 3:4–5, ESV) 6) Listen Up! “6He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.'” (Revelation 3:6, ESV)

Jesus Calling Pt. 3: Holding Fast to His Name 11-17-2024 Last slide – Hold fast to that which is good. 1) Jesus is my JUDGE. “12“And to the angel of the church in Pergamum write: ‘The words of him who has the sharp two-edged sword.” (Revelation 2:12, ESV) · Two-edged sword = judgement. “2He made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand he hid me; he made me a polished arrow; in his quiver he hid me away.” (Isaiah 49:2, ESV) “12For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.” (Hebrews 4:12–13, ESV) 2) Jesus sees how INTENSE my struggle is. “13“ ‘I know where you dwell, where Satan's throne is. Yet you hold fast my name, and you did not deny my faith even in the days of Antipas my faithful witness, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells.” (Revelation 2:13, ESV) · Satan's Throne (dwells) = This city was a legal center for the district and at the same time an old stronghold of emperor worship, where already in 29 B. C. a temple had been built to the divine Augustus and the goddess Roma, which was served by a powerful priesthood. Especially abhorrent to the Christians was the local cult of Aesculapius whose symbol was the serpent, which was called “the god of Pergamum” but to Christians was the symbol of the serpent of Eden. In addition to these pagan cults there towered on the Acropolis a throne-like altar of Zeus Soter (Savior) which commemorated the defeat of the barbarian Gauls by Attalus about 240 BC. - R. C. H. Lenski, The Interpretation of St. John's Revelation (Columbus, OH: Lutheran Book Concern, 1935), 103–104. Zahn takes it to refer to the cult of Aesculapius. He points out that under Diocletian Christian stonecutters from Rome carved out in the quarries of Pannonia not only pillars, capitals, and baths, but also victories, cupids, and even the sun-god in his chariot but refused to carve an image of Aesculapius, for which refusal they were put to death as being followers of Antipas of Pergamum. So much at least is certain that the Lord himself (not John as some say) regarded Pergamum as the one city among the seven where Satan even had his throne and thus ruled as king. All seven were thoroughly pagan, this one was the worst. R. C. H. Lenski, The Interpretation of St. John's Revelation (Columbus, OH: Lutheran Book Concern, 1935), 104. · Antipas - Show picture of where he might have been executed. 3) Jesus also sees where I've FALLEN SHORT. “14But I have a few things against you: you have some there who hold the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, so that they might eat food sacrificed to idols and practice sexual immorality. 15So also you have some who hold the teaching of the Nicolaitans.” (Revelation 2:14–15, ESV) · Teaching of Balaam Now, the Lord says, the church in Pergamum has some members that are holding to the same teaching and are running to the idol feasts and the fornication practiced in the pagan temples in order to gain immunity and pagan favor for themselves. The two aorist infinitives express actuality. This eating and this fornicating also go together. It was so in the case of the sons of Israel; it is so in the case of these members in Pergamum who were repeating Israel's folly. - R. C. H. Lenski, The Interpretation of St. John's Revelation (Columbus, OH: Lutheran Book Concern, 1935), 107. · Nicolaitans - 4) I must REPENT to escape judgement. “16Therefore repent. If not, I will come to you soon and war against them with the sword of my mouth.” (Revelation 2:16, ESV) · Repent - Strong's Concordance: Meaning: I repent, change my mind, change the inner man (particularly with reference to acceptance of the will of God), repent. Word Origin: From the Greek words "meta" (meaning "after" or "beyond") and "noeo" (meaning "to think" or "to perceive"), thus implying a change of mind or heart. · Make war “31Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? 32And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace.” (Luke 14:31–32, ESV) 5) Jesus gives the conqueror INDIVIDUALIZED rewards. “17He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, with a new name written on the stone that no one knows except the one who receives it.'” (Revelation 2:17, ESV) · Hidden manna - Trench, Epistles to the Seven Churches: “There can, I think, be no doubt that allusion is here made to the manna which, at God's express command, Moses caused to be laid up before the Lord in the Sanctuary, Exod. 16:32–34; cf., Heb. 9:4. This manna, as being thus laid up, obtained the name ‘hidden.' … This ‘hidden manna' … represents a benefit pertaining to the future kingdom of glory.”… All the statements regarding the heavenly joys are given in figurative language, and one of them is our eating and drinking there—note the feast in Matt. 8:11. The symbolism of the hidden manna is most appropriate here after the eating of things offered to idols in v. 14. In John 6:30, etc., Jesus calls himself (his flesh and blood… the manna, “bread from heaven,” to be eaten by faith. The fact that in John 6:49, etc., Jesus is “the living bread,” while in Revelation “the hidden manna” indicates the heavenly bliss, causes no difficulty. - R. C. H. Lenski, The Interpretation of St. John's Revelation (Columbus, OH: Lutheran Book Concern, 1935), 109. · White stone, secret name - “16He appointed the twelve: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter); 17James the son of Zebedee and John the brother of James (to whom he gave the name Boanerges, that is, Sons of Thunder);” (Mark 3:16–17, ESV) Ψῆφος = pebble; the adjective “white” may well imply that a diamond is referred to. “A new name having been written” on this stone, ὄνομα καινόν, means a name “new” as replacing one that is old, the perfect participle indicating that, once written, this name remains. The remarkable thing is that no one knows this name save the person who receives the pebble. We think that those are correct who take this name to be the name for the person who receives the pebble and not a secret name of God or of Christ. - R. C. H. Lenski, The Interpretation of St. John's Revelation (Columbus, OH: Lutheran Book Concern, 1935), 110.

The Gospel of Mark 1-8 Pt 3 – Helping the Hard Hearted By Louie Marsh, 4-21-2024 Last Slide – Elvis Quote 1) When I follow Jesus I should EXPECT opposition. “1Again he entered the synagogue, and a man was there with a withered hand. 2And they watched Jesus, to see whether he would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse him.” (Mark 3:1–2, ESV) The Battle between Jesus and the Religious Establishment has already begun. · People should always be treated as souls who Christ DIED to save. The man with the withered hand was A pawn in a religious/political battle for the Pharisees and Herodians A hurting human being, made in God's image, who needed help to Jesus. 2) Jesus puts people FIRST. “3And he said to the man with the withered hand, “Come here.”” “4And he said to them, “Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to kill?” But they were silent.” (Mark 3:3-4, ESV) Jesus puts the man front and center to force the issue, Jesus forces the issue · That room represented all that was wrong in the WORLD. People suffering Leaders not caring Leaders being cowards and hard hearted 3) Jesus GRIEVES over my hard heart. “5And he looked around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart…(Mark 3:5a, ESV) · Jesus is both angry and grieving for the hard-hearted leaders. Anger – Only wrong conceptions of both God as a person and of what holy anger really is can lead to the denial of the divine anger. The fact that even in the case of Christians anger may be a holy indignation, without sin…R. C. H. Lenski, The Interpretation of St. Mark's Gospel (Minneapolis, MN: Augsburg Publishing House, 1961), 135–136. “26Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger,” (Ephesians 4:26, ESV) Grieved – Jesus was distressed to see this πώρωσις. This word is used in Rom. 11:25 regarding Israel and really means the process by which something becomes more and more like stone; according to Armitage Robinson, in M.-M., the ancient translators and commentators described it as “obtuseness or intellectual blinding.” It is the obdurate and wilful resistance of the heart to the divine truth. R. C. H. Lenski, The Interpretation of St. Mark's Gospel (Minneapolis, MN: Augsburg Publishing House, 1961), 136. · A hard heart leads me into SIN. “18They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart.” (Ephesians 4:18, ESV) · I must FIGHT to keep my heart OPEN. “8do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, on the day of testing in the wilderness,” (Hebrews 3:8, ESV) “15See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no “root of bitterness” springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled;” (Hebrews 12:15, ESV) 4) Jesus heals in a way that does NO WORK. “5… and said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was restored.” (Mark 3:5b, ESV) The leadership doesn't rejoice in someone being helped and healed – instead they gather together to plot the destruction of Jesus.

On this episode of ID The Future, host Eric Anderson concludes his Why It Matters interview with microbiologist Dr. Scott Minnich. In Part 2, Dr. Minnich critiques Lenski's famous Long Term Evolutionary Experiments. Through experiments of his own, Minnich has shown how the practical results of Lenski's project on E. coli are easily repeatable under different conditions, and how some key changes to E. coli are even reversible, both of which speak more to an organism's pre-existing capabilities than to a Darwinian explanation. This is the conclusion to a two-part interview. Source
Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Digital brains beat biological ones because diffusion is too slow, published by GeneSmith on August 26, 2023 on LessWrong. I've spent quite a bit of time thinking about the possibility of genetically enhancing humans to be smarter, healthier, more likely to care about others, and just generally better in ways that most people would recognize as such. As part of this research, I've often wondered whether biological systems could be competitive with digital systems in the long run. My framework for thinking about this involved making a list of differences between digital systems and biological ones and trying to weigh the benefits of each. But the more I've thought about this question, the more I've realized most of the advantages of digital systems over biological ones stem from one key weakness of the latter: they are bottlenecked by the speed of diffusion. I'll give a couple of examples to illustrate the point: To get oxygen into the bloodstream, the body passes air over a huge surface area in the lungs. Oxygen passively diffuses into the bloodstream through this surface where it binds to hemoglobin. The rate at which the body can absorb new oxygen and expel carbon dioxide waste is limited by the surface area of the lungs and the concentration gradient of both molecules. Communication between neurons relies on the diffusion of neurotransmitters across the synaptic cleft. This process takes approximately 0.5-1ms. This imposes a fundamental limit on the speed at which the brain can operate. A signal propogates down the axon of a neuron at about 100 meters per second. You might wonder why this is so much slower than a wire; after all, both are transmitting a signal using electric potential, right? It turns out the manner in which the electrical potential is transmitted is much different in a neuron. Signals are propagated down an axon via passive diffusion of Na+ ions into the axon via an Na+ channel. The signal speed is fundamentally limited by the speed at which sodium ions can diffuse into the cell. As a result, electrical signals travel through a wire about 2.7 million times faster than they travel through an axon. Delivery of energy (mainly ATP) to different parts of the cell occurs via diffusion. The fastest rate of diffusion I found of any molecule within a cell was that of positively charged hydrogen ions, which diffuse at a blistering speed of 0.007 meters/second. ATP diffuses much slower. So energy can be transferred through a wire at more than 38 billion times the speed that ATP can diffuse through a cell. Why hasn't evolution stumbled across a better method of doing things than passive diffusion? Here I am going to speculate. I think that evolution is basically stuck at a local maxima. Once diffusion provided a solution for "get information or energy from point A to point B", evolving a fundamentally different system requires a large number of changes, each of which individually makes the organism less well adapted to its environment. We can see examples of the difficulty of evolving fundamentally new abilities in Professor Richard Lenski's long-running evolution experiment using E. coli. which has been running since 1988. Lenski began growing E. coli in flasks full of a nutrient solution containing glucose, potassium phosphate, citrate, and a few other things. The only carbon source for these bacteria is glucose, which is limited. Once per day, a small portion of the bacteria in each flask is transferred to another flask, at which point they grow and multiply again. Each flask will contain a number of different strains of E. coli, all of which originate from a common ancestor. To measure the rate of evolution, Lenski and his colleagues measure the proportion of each strain. The ratio of one strain compared to the others gives a clear idea of its "fitness ad...

This year's Conference On Engineering in Living Systems (CELS) happens this month and explores design principles at work in living things. To whet your appetite for the topic, we pulled this ID the Future from the archive. Host Jonathan Witt gives us a behind-the-scenes interview with Dustin Van Hofwegen, a biology professor at Azusa Pacific University in California. The occasion was a previous Conference on Engineering in Living Systems. The two discuss the private event, which brought together biologists and engineers to study how engineering principles and a design perspective can and are being applied to biology — to plants and animals but also to Van Hofwegen's area of focus, the realm of microbial biology. The two quickly move into a conversation about Van Hofwegen's article in the Journal of Bacteriology, co-authored with Carolyn Hovde and Scott Minnich, based on research they did at the University of Idaho. As Van Hofwegen explains, the research focused on one of the most ballyhooed evolutionary changes to come out of Richard Lenski's long-term evolution experiment, a decades-long study of many thousands of generations of E. coli bacteria. Perhaps the biggest evolutionary development in the course of the experiment involved some bacteria beginning to feed in citric acid. Interesting, to be sure, but as Van Hofwegen explains, E. coli already has this capacity; it's just a matter of switching it on. Van Hofwegen, Hovde, and Minnich demonstrated this through do-or-die experiments with E. coli, which led to the bacteria developing the capacity not in years or decades, as in the Lenski experiment, but in fourteen days, in as little as 100 generations. Van Hofwegen unpacks why this is an embarrassing result for Neo-Darwinism. The pair conclude with discussion of another study on antibiotic resistance with a similar result, that the resistance observed came not by evolving anything new but by tweaking something already present. What is intelligent design, and why is it controversial? In this first lecture, Meyer introduces the topic of intelligent design. Darwin's Challenge to Intelligent Design. What does evolution mean? Meyer explains adaptation and explains how Darwin's theory challenges the idea of intelligent design. Theories of the Origin of Life in the Nineteenth Century. Darwin conceived of the origin of life happening possibly in a “warm little pond.” Meyer explains the state of origin of life research at Darwin's time and later. Oparin's Theory of the Origin of Life. Meyer delves into Alexsandr Oparin's theory on the origin of life, put forward in 1936. Learn about evolutionary abiogenesis and the experiment that sought to prove it. The Amazing Complexity of Proteins. What do proteins look like? How has science progressed in its understanding of these basic building blocks of life? Meyer traces the work of protein scientists in the 1930s up through the 50s. What is the importance of a protein's shape? And how is this shape determined? The Role of DNA. How did our understanding of the cell change in the 1950s and 60s? Meyer discusses the discovery of the stable double helix structure of DNA and the key scientists involved. The DNA Enigma. Meyer examines Francis Crick's sequence hypothesis and then goes on to delve into the question of code and biological information, explaining what he calls “the DNA enigma.” What Kind of Information Does DNA Contain? Meyer explores types of information, explains mathematical Shannon information, and discusses what kind of information Francis Crick, Richard Dawkins, and Bill Gates see in life's code. Explanations for the Origin of Life: Chance. Could the information in the cell come about by chance? Today, learn the history of origin of life research from the 1950s to the present. What is prebiotic soup, anyway? Explanations for the Origin of Life: Self-Organization. Can self-organization explain the origin of biological information? In this lesson, learn about Dean Kenyon and his idea of ‘biochemical predestination' of amino acids. How does DNA fit into this whole picture? 2 Explanations for the Origin of Life: Pre-Biotic Natural Selection. What is prebiotic natural selection? Listen in as Dr. Meyer examines Oparin's hypothesis and modern attempts to reconcile evolution with the origin of life. Introduction to Intelligent Design. Meyer recounts his introduction to the design hypothesis and his quest to shape it into a rigorous scientific argument as he explores historical science methods. Objections to Intelligent Design: Is Intelligent Design Science? Meyer responds to a key philosophical objection to intelligent design. Objections to Intelligent Design: Argument from Ignorance? Some critics claim design proponents make an argument from ignorance. Is this true? Meyer discusses the intelligent designer of the gaps objection and illustrates why it is not applicable. Objections to Intelligent Design: RNA World, pt 1. Is it possible to avoid the cell's chicken and egg problem? Listen in as Meyer discusses the RNA world scenario. Can genetic information and biochemically relevant functions be present without either DNA or protein? Objections to Intelligent Design: RNA World, pt. 2. Can the RNA world scenario overcome the information problem? Listen in as Dr. Meyer analyzes this popular proposal. Objections to Intelligent Design: RNA World, pt. 3. Have scientific developments “overtaken Meyer's book” as Stephen Fletcher claims? Listen in as Meyer examines Fletcher's supposed evidence. Objections to Intelligent Design: Junk DNA. Critics claim that junk DNA disproves intelligent design. Meyer takes on this objection. Unit 2: Evidence of Intelligent Design in the Development of Life Another Information Problem in the History of Life. Is the origin of life the main problem with the materialistic evolutionary account of origins? Meyer delves into the modern evolutionary synthesis. Is information a problem here too? The Cambrian Explosion. What does the fossil record reveal about life's history? Meyer discusses how Darwin found the Cambrian explosion particularly striking and puzzling. The Mystery of the Missing Fossils: The Burgess Shale. Darwin tried to propose an explanation for the mystery of the missing fossils. But have later discoveries confirmed his predictions? Meyer introduces a 1909 discovery – the Burgess Shale. The Mystery of the Missing Fossils: The Chenjiang Fauna. Meyer details a fossil find with great diversity: the Cambrian era Chenjiang fauna. 3 What Does It Take to Build an Animal? Meyer discusses the process of how to get a Cambrian animal. Challenges to the Neo-Darwinian Mechanism: Combinatorial Searches, pt. 1. What does combinatorial search mean? And how would the neo-Darwinian mechanism produce the new genetic information needed to build new animals? Challenges to the Neo-Darwinian Mechanism: Combinatorial Searches, pt. 2. How hard is it to get a new protein? Meyer does the math, further examining the efficacy of the neo-Darwinian synthesis. Challenges to the Neo-Darwinian Mechanism: Developmental Mutations and Gene Regulatory Networks. It's a catch-22: random mutation and organism development. Meyer gets beyond the numbers and uncovers the challenges posed for NeoDarwinism by developmental mutations and developmental gene regulatory networks. Challenges to the Neo-Darwinian Mechanism: Information beyond DNA. Do protein folds and developmental gene regulatory networks pose the biggest problems to Neo-Darwinism? Meyer discusses a third devastating challenge to evolution. He also discusses new evolutionary theories proposed to overcome it. The Positive Case for Intelligent Design, pt. 1. Can one make a positive case for intelligent design using accepted methods of reasoning? Meyer examines inductive, deductive and abductive reasoning, and lays out what intelligent design proponents need to demonstrate to make a strong case for design. The Positive Case for Intelligent Design, pt. 2. Meyer applies historical scientific methods to evaluate potential causes of the Cambrian explosion. The Positive Case for Intelligent Design, pt. 3. Meyer discusses genetic algorithm computer programs, the reason why the random mutation/natural selection mechanism is doomed, and why intelligence uniquely can account for functional information. Responding to Critics: Charles Marshall. Paleontologist Charles Marshall challenged Meyer's arguments in Darwin's Doubt, and here Meyer responds. Response to Critics: Dennis Venema and Deborah Haarsma. Meyer evaluates an objection to his book from theistic evolutionists Dennis Venema and Deborah Haarsma. Can evolution's mechanism of natural selection acting on random mutations account for new protein folds? And what does the evolution of nylonase demonstrate? Responding to Critics: Lawrence Krauss and Richard Dawkins. Meyer responds to atheists Lawrence Krauss and Richard Dawkins. 4 Who Is the Designer? Who is the designing intelligence? Was it an alien? Or a transcendent being? Meyer addresses this question, distinguishing between evidence from biology that merely points to mind, and separate evidence that may shed light on the identity of the designer. Unit 3: Evidence of Intelligent Design in Physics and Cosmology One Man's Journey. Meyer recounts the story of an astronomer's journey from atheism to intelligent design. What do the stars reveal? What Is Fine-Tuning? Meyer discusses the laws and constants of physics, highlighting striking examples of fine-tuning. How Do We Recognize Design? Meyer discusses William Dembski's theory of design inferences, and applies that to fine-tuning. Weak Anthropic Principle and Natural Law. Meyer gives an overview of the weak anthropic principle and natural law as explanations for fine-tuning. The Multiverse, pt. 1. Meyer describes a popular explanation for fine-tuning and the two cosmological models physicists employ. The Multiverse, pt. 2. Meyer analyzes the multiverse theory. How does it stack up against intelligent design? The Multiverse, pt. 3. Meyer delves deeper into universe generating mechanisms and what they require. Who Is the Designer? In this final video lecture, Stephen Meyer shares his thoughts on this important question. Michael Behe Exposes How Mutations Fail To Invent (Science Uprising EP6) https://youtu.be/_ivgQFIST1g Discovery Science Are chance mutations really “the key to our evolution” like they claim in the X-Men films? Or are there strict limits to what mutations can accomplish, limits that point to the need for an overarching designer and the failure of Darwinian evolution to create fundamentally new things? Be sure to visit https://scienceuprising.com/ to find more videos and explore related articles and books. In this episode of Science Uprising, we'll take a look at the real evidence for the supposed powerhouse of evolution. The featured expert is biochemist Michael Behe of Lehigh University, author of the books Darwin's Black Box, The Edge of Evolution, and Darwin Devolves. Well-known scientists have been preaching a materialistic worldview rather than presenting the public with all the evidence. We are here to change that. The objective scientific evidence does not prove our universe is blind and purposeless. It does not show we are simply meat machines. It does not prove that evolutionary mechanisms can completely account for the diversity of life on earth. This is what THEY want you to think. Think for yourself and make an informed decision. Are you ready? The uprising has begun. In a lecture, Phillip Johnson cited physicist Richard Feynman on a scientist's obligation to be honest — not only with himself or in other scientific contexts but, not one bit less, when speaking to the lay public. “You should not fool the laymen when you're talking as a scientist.” That such a thing would need to be said is itself revealing. What's more, Feynman insisted, you should “bend over backwards to show how you may be wrong.” The comments are taken from a Commencement address by Feynman in 1974 at Caltech. Johnson, a founding father of modern intelligent design, was so moved by this that he said “I wish it could be set to music.” As far as I know it hasn't been set to music. But the idea is a major theme in the new Science Uprising series. Scientists fool themselves and they fool non-scientists, not about dry technical details with no special significance, but about matters that bear on huge, life-altering world picture issues. One example is the role of mutations in evolution. That is the topic of Episode 6 of Science Uprising, “Mutations: Failure to Invent.” It's out now; see it here: The Alternative Perspective The idea that random genetic mutations lead to wondrous, creative innovations is so influential that it forms the premise of a movie franchise, X-Men, that has grossed $6 billion worldwide over the past couple of decades. That's a lot of “fooling the laymen”! The alternative perspective would be open to the possibility of creative evolution requiring intelligence guidance. The producers of the X-Men movies aren't scientists. However, the science media have done their best to mislead about the work of real scientists, including National Academy of Sciences member Richard Lenski. We're all victims of that hype, including Hollywood moviemakers. Dismantling the hype about Lenski occupies biochemist Michael Behe for a significant part of his recent book, Darwin Devolves. Super-Challenges Not Super-Powers As Professor Behe explains in Science Uprising, the Long-Term Evolution Experiment conducted by Lenski has demonstrated not the creative power of unguided evolution but the occasional benefits of devolution, of breaking or disabling genes. That's the opposite lesson from the one drawn by media such as the New York Times in reporting on Lenski's efforts. “Think about it,” says the masked narrator of Science Uprising, against the backdrop of poignant images of people suffering from genetic illnesses, “significant mutations don't create superpowers. They create super-challenges. Sometimes those mutations are even life-threatening.” Check out some of our other videos: Information Enigma: Where does information come from? Sometimes it feels like the online world is split into multiple, incompatible perceptions of reality. This is not a new development. In fact, in the mid-aughts one man tried to create an isolated island of American christian conservative thinking by launching a website called Conservapedia. Though it was advertised as being free from the supposed liberal bias of Wikipedia, Conservapedia became a home of pseudoscience, conspiracy theories, and general right-wing grievances. It even launched a project to create a new English translation of the Bible that was manlier and more conservative than previous translations. To help us understand the history of Conservapedia, we recruited our resident reddit atheist debunker, Travis. He's going to walk us through the story of Conservpedia's creation and show off some of the latest additions to the online encyclopedia, which is still active after 17 years. The famous long-term evolution experiments led by Richard Lenski lose their luster when filtered through Michael Behe's extraordinary insight: that Darwin's mechanism is a process that breaks down more than it builds up. Source

Since it's inception, evolutionary theory has remained controversial for many. Although one might think only uneducated laypeople find the idea unpalatable, quite a sizeable minority of scientists too struggle to come to terms with Darwinism. In today's episode, Will Barlow explores a number of major scientific objections to evolution, including the Cambrian explosion, mutations as an insufficient mechanism, irreducible complexity, and the fossil record itself. Additionally, he briefly explores the issue of abiogenesis--the presumed starting point for any evolutionary development. Who is Sean Finnegan? Read his bio here —— Notes —— Scientific Objections to Evolution • Evidence problems (open scientific questions)• Methodological problems• Evolution or design? Evidence Problems The theory of evolution has several major open problems that are yet to be solved: • The Cambrian Explosion• Mutations The Cambrian Explosion Much of the fossil record could be viewed in a light to support evolution, but the Cambrian Explosion poses a big problem: • The theory of evolution requires slow changes over a long time• Cambrian explosion was a big change in a short period of time Simply put, what is the Cambrian explosion? • Evolution would predict species would diverge and lead to new genera, families, orders, classes, and then phyla• Most animal phyla (and many major classes within them) appear fully formed in the Cambrian period “According to modern paleontologists James Valentine, Stanley Awramik, Philip Signor, and Peter Sadler, the appearance of the major animal phyla near the beginning of the Cambrian is ‘the single most spectacular phenomenon evident in the fossil record.'”— Jonathan Wells, The Politically Incorrect Guide to Darwinism and Intelligent Design, page 16. Some scientists have suggested that pre-Cambrian organisms might be too delicate to make good fossils • Recent scientific discoveries have shown that this is untrue• Scientists have found fossils in the Cambrian period that are small and soft tissued Mutations Mutations are considered incredibly important to the evolutionary framework: • Recall that as populations are isolated and different conditions exist, random mutations lead to speciation (according to evolution)• Recent studies on mutation have challenged this understanding “Rather than mutations building up molecular machinery, improving an organism relentlessly, many mutations actually destroyed parts of a creature's DNA, or rendered some of the molecular machinery it coded for ineffective. It turns out that some of the mutations which break things can sometimes have a salutary effect.”— Michael Behe, “God and Evolution,” God is Great, God is Good, page 86. Mutations that break genes can have a positive effect. For example: • If a child receives the gene for sickle cell anemia from one parent and not the other, that child will experience more resistance to malaria Evolutionist Richard Lenski and his team observed a situation in bacteria where two successive mutations improved the survivability of the bacteria. However, there is one problem… “The first mutations to help were the breaking of genes. The bacteria rapidly lost the ability to make the sugar ribose (a component of RNA); for some reason that helped the mutant bacteria compete against non-mutants. A handful of other genes involved in metabolism were also deleted. Some bacteria had their ability to repair DNA badly damaged. Most bacteria lost the ability to metabolize the sugar maltose.” “The mutations were incoherent, scattered in different genes, with no recognizable theme among them. They were not in the process of building any new system in the cell. They simply took advantage of opportunities that helped them grow faster in their current milieu. This is what random mutation does, even when it ‘helps.'”— Michael Behe, “God and Evolution,” God is Great, God is Good, page 89. Methodological Problems The theory of evolution has many methodological problems: • Misleading Evidence for evolution• Irreducible complexity• The fossil record• Origin of life Misleading Evidence for Evolution Proponents of evolution have used several pieces of misleading information: • Haeckel's embryos• Miller's origin of life experiment Haeckel's Embryos If you look at many scientific textbooks, you will find a drawing of Haeckel's embryos. The problem is that they are fake! Miller's Experiment Stanley Miller conducted a series of experiments in 1953 to demonstrate that life could spontaneously arise: • Miller used an atmosphere of hydrogen, methane, ammonia, and water vapor — and life appeared!• However, that atmosphere is not the scientifically accepted atmosphere Irreducible Complexity “If it could be demonstrated that any complex organ existed which could not possibly have formed by numerous, successive, slight modifications, my theory would absolutely break down.”— Charles Darwin, The Origin of Species Michael Behe (professor of biochemistry) believes that there are many examples that violate Darwin's principles. He calls these “irreducibly complex” things “machines.” An “irreducibly complex” system is “a single system which is composed of several well-matched, interacting parts that contribute to the basic function, and where the removal of any one of the parts causes the system to effectively cease functioning.”— Behe, Darwin's Black Box, page 39. Behe uses an example from modern life to explain what he means by an “irreducibly complex” system: a mousetrap. Can a mousetrap work without a hammer, spring, or platform? Behe give many examples in his book of systems that, from a biochemical perspective, are irreducibly complex: • Blood clotting• Bacterial flagellum Responses to Behe: • Collins says that most of Behe's examples may have plausible solutions in the future• Dawkins argues that there is not an “all or nothing” nature to certain examples Behe gives• Lenski's experiment showed that bacteria could see successive mutations (two-step machine) The Fossil Record What about the fossil record? It is perhaps the only place where we can scientifically observe speciation (the change in species over time).Jonathan Wells challenges the fossil record. Imagine that you dig in your backyard and find two skeletons! They are both dated to 30 years ago. One is adult sized and the other is half of that. Can you assume a familial relationship? We can apply this type of critical thinking to the fossil record. Just because two fossil specimens look like they are related does not make them related. Consider archaeopteryx. Is it half-bird, half-reptile? Does it fit in the gap that evolutionists want?It does not. The supposed reptilian precursors to this animal are found after it in the fossil record. “We are not even authorized to consider the exceptional case of the archaeopteryx as a true link. By link, we mean a necessary stage of transition between classes such as reptiles and birds, or between smaller groups. An animal displaying characters belonging to two different groups cannot be treated as a true link as long as the intermediary stages have not been found, and as long as the mechanisms of the transition remain unknown.”—Pierre Lecomte du Nouy, cited in Strobel, The Case for a Creator, page 58. Origin of Life Remember that evolution does not describe the origin of life — the theory begins when life begins. However, it is interesting to challenge abiogenesis theories in conjunction with evolution. Challenges to abiogenesis theories: • The probability of randomly producing a “simple” protein are astronomically low• No natural selection available before life begins Evolution or Design? What is the best conclusion given the evidence? • If we believe in evolution, it still could be consistent with God-designed life and guidance.• If we don't believe in evolution, there is strong evidence for design in the living beings around us.• Either way, atheism doesn't do the best job of explaining the evidence.

# Introduction Last summer when we agreed to cover 1 Peter during our Sunday evening sermon series I made recommendations to the other pastors on paragraphs we each should preach. I assigned myself this section, 1 Peter 3:18-22, for…fun. If you're keeping note, you remember that Dave taught last and covered 3:1-7. Jonathan has a message already for verses 8 and following, but he had an opportunity to be gone tonight, so we swapped evenings, not passages. My title, though, and the reason for this paragraph, hinge on a part we've temporarily skipped. When we are suffering, and when we show a sort of hopefulness that causes others to ask about it, we want to be ready with a good apology. The word in 3:15, typically translated as “defense" or "reason" is ἀπολογία (*apologia*). Apology here means not admitting that we were wrong or saying that we're sorry, but explaining the foundation for why our hope is real. We're to have our case prepared. There is actually plenty of basis before 3:15, and yet there is a "for" or "because" in verse 18 that sets up clear comfort for suffering Christians. There are, as we'll see, some significant questions and competing interpretations that keep everything from being equally clear. But these verses contain some glorious, and hope case-making, truths. > For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, because they formerly did not obey, when God's patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water. Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him. (1 Peter 3:18–22, ESV) # Christ Vivified (verse 18) **Christ also suffered**, connects with Christian suffering in verse 13 and 17. It's not that Christians suffered first, but rather that Christian suffering isn't without precedence. In chapter 2 Peter said that Christ left us an “example,” an underwriting (ὑπογραμμὸν), that we should follow in His steps. This is where WWJD got its origin, with [the fictional story by Charles Sheldon](https://www.amazon.com/His-Steps-Charles-M-Sheldon/dp/1453832866). But Christ's suffering is more than merely a pattern which we should imitate, it is also for our propitiation. His unique suffering was **once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous**. We have hope in whatever parts of our suffering that are similar to His because of His suffering that was something we could never do. His was a *substitution* which the “for” or “instead of” emphasizes. > “He was pierced for our transgressions; > He was crushed for out iniquities; > upon Him was the chastisement that brought us peace, > and with his wounds we are healed.” > (Isaiah 53:5-6, from which Peter quotes in 1 Peter 2:24, and see also Isaiah 53:11-12) We also have hope because of the purpose of our justification: **that He might bring us to God**. This is my favorite reminder of Christ's work; He turns rebels into brothers, hostile enemies into companions and allies. Redemption is unto *reconciliation*, forgiveness unto *fellowship*, propitiation unto *peace* in His presence. Our sin offended His holy standard and it separated us from Him. The Son suffered to save and bring back the wandering sheep (1 Peter 2:25); He leads *you* to the Father (see Ephesians 2:18). The end of verse 18 begins the challenging part, ** being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit**. He really died; He had a physical body that the Roman soldiers beat and nailed to a cross. In the flesh, as a man, He suffered. On one hand they killed Him, then on the other hand God made Him alive (μὲν...δὲ). He was vivified, from Latin *vivere*, “to live,” so enlivened. But in what way? The word πνεῦμα (*pneuma*) is never capitalized in Greek, context always determines whether it is the Holy Spirit or the spirit of a person, the intangible, non-flesh animating part. If it is the Holy Spirit (as represented in the KJV, NIV) then all three persons of the Trinity are mentioned in this verse as working for our salvation. Paul explicitly connects the Holy Spirit who dwells in us as the Spirit “who raised Jesus from the dead” (Romans 8:11). If it is the Holy Spirit, the phrase really isn't parallel; having been put to death *in the realm/sphere* of the flesh and being vivified *by the agent* of the Spirit. (Though see a possible similar use in 1 Timothy 3:16, ἐν σαρκί...ἐν πνεύματι, body and Spirit.) If it is "spirit" (as in the Geneva Bible, NASB, ESV), then why emphasize that? The resurrection is about His body, which was dead and buried but now alive (which is also our hope). After He said, “It is finished,” Jesus “bowed his head and gave up His spirit” (John 19:30). So this is when He got it back? The Greek word here is *not* the typical word for resurrection (which we find in verse 21), but a form of ζωοποιέω, meaning “to be caused to live, to be vivified.” Is this a time *between* His bodily death and bodily resurrection, when Jesus was disembodied but made alive again in His spirit, or is it another way to refer to His resurrection? Jesus did tell the thief on the cross beside Him that he would be with him *today* in paradise (Luke 23:43), which means that He did not suffer in hell from Friday to Sunday. The questions spill into the next section. # Christ Vindicated (verses 19-20) In the (Spirit/spirit), Jesus went (somewhere) and preached (something) to an audience (of spirits). > in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, because they formerly did not obey, when God's patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, (1 Peter 3:19–20a, ESV) Who are the "spirits in prison”? What is the "prison" and where is it? When did this proclaiming occur? What did Jesus proclaim? Why is this so important? What is it doing here? Peter seems to expect that his readers know all of this; his lack of additional details suggests that he's reminding them not revealing new info. We have less confidence. > Luther wrote, “A wonderful text is this, and a more obscure passage perhaps than any other in the New Testament, so that I do not know for a certainty just what Peter means. (quoted by Schreiner) **In which…having gone He preached** picks up with the last word in verse 17, so “in the Spirit/spirit” Jesus traveled somewhere. It seems that this was the next thing after having been made alive. Vivification/resurrection led to this proclamation. The original word order is, “in which also to the in prison spirits having gone He preached,” with an emphasis on the spirits. When the plural **spirits** is used in the New Testament it is not about men, but angels, and usually fallen angels. And the only **prison** for spirits we're told about is a place for the disobedient spirits (namely Satan in Revelation 20:7) whom Jude perhaps describes in confinement. > And the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day (Jude 1:6, ESV) Right after that Jude mentions Sodom and Gomorrah and “likewise” sexual immorality (Jude 1:7). Peter also refers to this angelic disobedience and detention. > For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment; if he did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others, when he brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly; (2 Peter 2:4–5, ESV) Yet some commentators (such as Calvin) assert that this **prison** in 1 Peter 3:19 is figurative for those imprisoned in ignorance or sin or even those bound under the law. So to him, spirits is men, regardless of what the word usually refers to. But what connection does that have to Christ “having gone preached”? Verse 19 sounds like a *message*, not an extended ministry (Heibert). And how does that relate to **in the days of Noah**? We do know that it was particularly sinful, which resulted in God wiping out almost all humanity. Some (such as Augustine) see the “spirits” as the spirits of men, but the *now* disembodied spirits of the men who died in the flood, but the proclamation was through Christ's Spirit *in Noah *preaching to them (compare with 2 Peter 2:5). In 1995 I was taking a Greek class which worked through 1 Peter, and in my final project, an outline commentary on the book, I took the Noah as preacher interpretation. My professor wrote, "You can be wrong if you want to." Ha. I have changed my mind, mostly because *every* prophet preached righteousness through Christ's Spirit (see 1 Peter 1:11), not just Noah. Plus the order presented in verses 18 to 19 makes the preaching *post* Christ being vivified; it's not the pre-incarnate Christ. In addition to that, the part that stands out in Noah's day is the demonic activity, which also sets us up for verse 22. It would fit the interpretation that the "sons of God" in Genesis 6 were demons, or at least that men were demon-possessed (MacArthur), and especially in their sexual immorality (Jude 1:6). They were “spirits” who **did not obey…in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared**. The spirits are pre-flood evil-doers. **God's patience waited**, but not indefinitely. This relates to Christ announcing His triumph. > He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him. (Colossians 2:15, ESV) > he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. (Ephesians 1:20b–21 ESV) In His preaching Christ wasn't offering them a second chance, this isn't a gospel message; there is “no missionary work in hell” (Lenski). It is a message of His victory. This relates to our hope. The comfort is that a culture dominated by evil, full of depravity, and even rife with demons doesn't win. The great powers against Christ heard Christ proclaim His victory. # Christ Victorious (verses 21-22) Peter follows the flood waters of judgment with waters of baptism. It **corresponds** (ἀντίτυπον) to or “symbolizes” (NIV) the ark, but it's not the water, the analogy is to Christ. As the waters of judgment brought death, so we are buried in death when baptized, and we only “survive” because we are in Christ. Peter is not teaching baptismal regeneration. The water isn't magic, the cleansing isn't via ceremony. The external isn't the point, but the **appeal to God for a good conscience**. Our salvation is **through the resurrection of Jesus Christ**, and the elect are born again by faith into hope (1:3). Now He's ascended, our Lord ever more. All the angels, whatever their hierarchy, **authorities and powers**, have been made subject to Christ, and this is *especially true* of the *fallen* angels. He is **at the right hand of God**, a position of honor and authority. There is not one thumb's-width in the entire domain of *all* existence over which Christ does not rule as Lord. His enemies are being made His footstool (see Psalm 110:1). # Conclusion For my final answers tonight, I'll go with spirit instead of Spirit, and that being made alive refers to His bodily resurrection rather than a time of His disembodiment when darkness covered the earth for three hours during His crucifixion, that the spirits in prison are the fallen angels who sought to corrupt the human race while Noah built the ark and now are imprisoned, that the resurrected Christ proclaimed His triumph over them, that we are being delivered through our union with Christ and will be brought to God by Christ, and that all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Him. This provides a good apology for our hope: Christ is alive. Christ has atoned for our sin. Christ announced His victory. Christ has ascended to His throne. He knows what it means to suffer for doing good, according to God's will (verse 17), and look at what His suffering brought.
Hear now the word of the Lord from Matthew 5:11-16. 11 “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you. 13 “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet. 14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. Matthew 5:11-16, ESV The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God endures forever. Well, this morning we're reeling from this heartbreaking news. We're reeling from the news of Jaylen's death. The Jaylen was a noncommuning member. I baptized him on January 22nd, 2017, a little over five years ago. As we've gotten this news, it's left us with so many unanswered questions, so many desperate what ifs. But I think what's very hard as we come to worship and it's very similar, it's a Sunday, like many other Sundays in similar different respects. It's another Lord's day where we called into the presence of God to worship him. We have to ask the question How do we move forward? How do we move forward under the weight of the grief of such a horrific tragedy? Well, in God's providence, in God's kind providence, I believe that the text he has given us this morning is something that speaks to the moment. This is not necessarily a text that I would choose for a funeral text to sort of directly address the situation. I didn't choose this text with the events of the week going on in mind. I start working on this Monday mornings, working on this Tuesday, Wednesday. I heard the news late Thursday; I was pondering all of this. Friday, all of this is weighty on my heart. Saturday I was revisiting this and thinking about this. I believe that what Christ has for us in his teaching here in the Sermon on the Mount is precisely what we need. Here Jesus is re-establishing us and the unshakeable hope that we have in the gospel. He is refreshing us in the promises that we have in Jesus that cannot be taken away, that cannot be diminished. He's renewing us for the call that he has given to the church. The unchanging call to the church to serve as salt and light in a corrupt and a dark world. Jesus here is strengthening us, and he is refocusing us on the mission and mandate of the church. Our big idea then, is we study this particular passage is this that discipleship bears witness to Jesus in the world.. This morning, three parts, 1. The Persecution from the World 2. The Preservation of the World 3. The Protection for the World The Persecution from the World So first of all, the persecution from the world in verses 11 through 12. Jesus says here, "Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you, falsely on my account." Last week we talked about the Beatitudes in verses three through 10. We talked about how there were eight Beatitudes and we talked about the nature of the Beatitudes is describing a class of people. Blessed are these people, for, and then Jesus would give us the gospel promise. Blessed are these people for they will receive this particular gospel promise. Now one of the questions is OK, so we have eight Beatitudes, but now it seems that we have a ninth Beatitude in verse 11. "Blessed are you when others revile you", and on and on and on. So the question is, well, why don't we consider this a part of the Beatitudes as a whole? Well, there are two reasons to see what Jesus is doing here at the beginning of the passage we're looking at this morning is different from what he was doing. The first is that the focus and the direction of what Jesus speaks changes in the Beatitudes. Jesus addresses generalities. He speaks in the third person. Blessed are they. Blessed are those. Blessed are the ones. Then here he personalizes it. Blessed are you. It's in the second person. It's directly at us. Blessed are you. The second reason, this is the stronger reason, is that Jesus had a very clear order in his mind about the Beatitudes that he spoke. In verses three and eight the beginning and the end of the Beatitudes, the first and the last, both of the gospel promises are precisely the same. In the beginning, in verse three, Jesus says, "Blessed are the poor in spirit for", here's the gospel promise, "theirs is the kingdom of Heaven." Then, in verse 10, "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake for", gospel promise, "theirs is the kingdom of heaven." This promise of who shall possess the Kingdom of Heaven bookends the beginning and end of the Beatitudes. So we see then that there was a structure there, and we'll talk a little bit more about what that structure is in a moment. But what we are seeing here is that Jesus is not continuing on with endless blessed are those, but now he is doing something different. He is transitioning from speaking about the character of disciples, in verses three through eight. Now he is speaking instead about the connection, the relationship that disciples have to the wider world. This is a transitional section. Jesus is saying you just heard the first part of the teaching about the Kingdom of Heaven. I want you to understand that I was speaking about things that don't seem to be true, things that are counterintuitive in nature. I was telling you, blessed are the people who don't seem to be blessed. Blessed are those who are poor in spirit, blessed are those who mourn. In what sense are those blessed? Well, remember we talked about the fact that Jesus was first talking about the blessedness of repentance, that there is a blessedness of recognizing that I have nothing to offer God poverty in spirit. I have nothing that I can trade with God to purchase the Kingdom of Heaven. I am instead dependent entirely on him. Blessed are those who mourn. This is not only the mourning over death, but this is the mourning of spiritual mourning, of recognizing that I am a guilty sinner in the sight of God, and my sins are filthy and odious before him. Blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted. Jesus said there is a blessedness to repentance. There was also a blessedness then as we repent, we turn from our sin and we turn instead to faith in Jesus Christ. Jesus says that there is a blessedness of resemblance. Blessed are those who then, as we looked at Christ in faith, are transformed and conformed to the image of Christ. So that we begin to resemble God all the way to the point where the world treats us in the way that the world treats God. The world hates God, and the world hates those who resemble God. Blessed are those then who are persecuted for righteousness sake. Jesus says blessed are those who persecute you. You will look like me, and therefore the world will treat you like they treat me. That means that you are going to be reviled and persecuted, and people will utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Jesus says this is blessed. Why? Why we ask. Why would this be blessed? Well, Jesus says, first of all, don't make a mistake, I was speaking the truth. I want you to know about that. You heard this right. This isn't just a platitude. You are blessed when you face this situation. Well, Jesus is telling us then that this is blessed and he goes on to offer us two comforting factors to help us digest this hard truth that blessed are those who are persecuted. First, there's an intensification of the promises in verse 10. Verse 10 promised us that theirs is the kingdom of Heaven. Now we read, "rejoice and be glad", in verse 12 "for your reward is great in heaven." You know, we might have been saying after verse 10, well, that's fine, blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Well, maybe that's OK. Maybe I'll get in, sneak into the Kingdom of Heaven. But does that just secure me? Sort of, you know, the cheap seats, the nosebleed seats. Am I going to be far away from the action? Jesus says no. Rejoice and be glad for your reward is great in heaven. That's the first part of the intensification of this promise, the comforting factor. The second is that he ties our blessedness to the blessedness of those who've gone before us. Blessed, are you for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you. If the world hates God, it will hate those who resemble God and that's always been the case. In the past, they persecuted the prophets and now they will persecute you. Understand that you are blessed if you were in this situation. Again, we have to ask Jesus, how is this blessed? In what way is this blessed to be persecuted, to mourn? In what way is it blessed to be poor in spirit? Now what Jesus here is addressing is a very much a particular kind of suffering. The suffering that comes from persecution. There was also a general principle that stands behind and that undergirds this. It's a general principle that relates to all suffering, how can we be blessed in all suffering, whether it's mourning, whether it's hungering and thirsting for righteousness, whatever it is, how can we be blessed in these situations? Well, it's because what Jesus is telling us is he is telling us about the gospel hope that we have that is not dependent on our external circumstances. He is reminding us that the foundation of the joy that we have in this life does not depend on whether a particular week has been good or bad. Whether it has been easy or hard. Whether we have been rich or poor. Whether we have had plenty or have been in want. Our blessedness does not rest on those fleeting, ever changing circumstances. Our blessedness is built on the rock solid foundation of Jesus Christ and him crucified. So that we can be blessed even when we are walking through times of great sorrow, even when we are walking through the valley of the shadow of death, as we have been this very week. How then are we blessed? We are blessed because of the greatness of our reward, we blessed because of our treasure, which is in heaven, we are blessed because of the promises of the Kingdom of Heaven. We are blessed because we have Christ and no one can take Jesus away from him from us. We cannot be plucked out of Jesus's hand. Jesus says we are in the Father's hand and no one can take us out of the Father's hand. It's something that doesn't depend on the temperature you take of the particular day. It depends entirely on the unshakeable, immovable promises of God himself. This brings all of our suffering into focus. You know, in life, it's so interesting. How blessed people will consider themselves when they finally lay their hands on what they really want in life. This is even true and even especially true, when they've had to sacrifice much on the way toward getting what they want. Think about what people are willing to invest in to sacrifice in life. How much money, how much time, how much energy, how much effort, how much heartbreak, how much sweat, blood and tears that people are willing to invest for success. Think about how much people invest in athletics and sports. When that championship is won, think of the joy. It makes everything that's been sacrificed up to that point worth it! We won. Think about actors. You know, you hear some of these stories of actors who languish in absolute obscurity for years and years and years waiting to catch a break and they finally get their break and think how happy they are to finally land that big role. Or think about business. I had the, we'll call it a privilege, of working in a startup company with all of what that entails. It's terrible. You don't know what you're doing. Every day is uncertain. You're working so hard and sacrificing so much, and you can't even entirely see at the moment what you were trying to really do. It takes a long time to work that stuff out. But when it works, what a thrill there is. What a thrill when we reach those successes that we have sacrificed so much for. But all of those successes are so fleeting. You win the championship this year, that's great, we're already making preseason odds on who's going to win next year. You're irrelevant. You get that job. That's great, that's wonderful, but guess what? Now comes the real work, and now comes all the challenges that come with success. Your business works. You make a lot of money. Great. Guess what? You're going to face all the sorrows and heartache and difficulties and challenges that come from that and from a changing world all the time. Jesus says your blessedness is something deeper, something richer, something that cannot be moved, it cannot be touched. Your blessedness is in heaven. It's Jesus Christ and he cannot corrupt, he cannot spoil, he cannot rust or fade. Which means that even if you lose everything in this life, Jesus says blessed, are you. Blessed, are you. During a week where wars have raged, where the economy has stumbled and tottered, when a child's life was taken, this is the hope that we have in the gospel. That our blessedness is not what we have in life, but something that is transcending beyond this world. That blessedness is all of our hope. It carries the entire weight. Nothing else can carry weight in life but this. Blessed, are you. Jesus is reorienting us; he is refreshing us, he is re-establishing us, he is renewing us in the unshakeable, immovable hope of the gospel. Are you putting your life, hope and dreams in anything else? These things, too, will pass away. If your hope is in Jesus, blessed, are you. Well, again, that's the general principle, the general principle is that our blessedness does not depend on our circumstances, but on the promises that we have in Christ. Again, the particular point that Jesus is making in this context has to do with persecution. Even when, even if, even especially when you will face this persecution, Jesus says, understand you're blessed. We might read what Jesus is saying and verses 11 and 12 as a warning, maybe a tip off. Persecution is coming, maybe you better make yourself scarce. Maybe you better withdraw from the world because it's safer not to be in contact with the world who will revile you, who will persecute you, who will utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on Jesus's account. That's not what Jesus says. Jesus goes on to then reorient us and renew the call of the church to being a faithful presence, of being salt and light in a corrupt and darkened world. The Preservation of the World So the second point of our sermon this morning is the preservation of the world, which Jesus talks about in verse 13. He says you. Now, earlier that you was somewhat implied, but here the you is very emphatic, it stated right at the front of the sentence, which is a little bit odd in Greek. You, Jesus says, one commentator points at the emphatic nature of this says, you yourselves and no others. Remember he's speaking to his disciples, in Matthew 5:1. Of course, this has special significance for officers who teach like I'm teaching right now. You better be teaching in a way that is salt for the world, but Jesus is speaking to all of his disciples. He's saying, don't miss this. He's saying this is you disciples, you and no other and that excludes the Pharisees. Now Jesus will have more to say about the Pharisees coming up, but he's saying you and you alone, not the religious leaders, not the Pharisees, but you and you alone are the salt of the Earth. The salt of the Earth. Now, why would Jesus compare his disciples to the salt of the Earth? Well, there are a number of potential points of comparison that Jesus might be making, but what's fairly clear in what he's saying here is he's talking about the way in which salt was a preservative, especially in meat. They didn't have ways to refrigerate or even freeze meat. So the way to preserve meat was to salt it very heavily. Now you think about the way that if you if you left a raw steak on your counter for a day, you probably wouldn't want to eat that. But at the same time, you know, you think about how long that beef jerky has been sitting in that gas station lineup. You know, how many years has it been there before someone purchases it and buys it? The answer doesn't matter because of how heavily it has been salted. That's a preservative. Also, the dehydration, but you get where I'm saying. That's salting, preserves the meat and keeps it from decaying and corrupting. But salt also gives a flavor. You take one bite of that beef jerky of unknown origin and you see how salty it is, and that's maybe a confirmation that it's safe to eat. Salt gives flavor, and it prevents corruption in the world. Now, the salt of that day and age was not pure. They didn't have the pure table salt that we have, sodium chloride. What they had rather was, they would go to places like the Dead Sea, which were saltwater areas. They would look for where this salt had maybe evaporated and leaving behind this substance, a salty substance. If you taste it, it tastes very salty, but not all of it was salt. A lot of it was mixed with inert minerals like gypsum. I don't know what that is, but I read that it was gypsum. This gypsum would have no taste. Now there was a way to leach the sodium chloride out of that, which would just leave stuff like the gypsum behind. So where you thought you were getting a spoon full of salty salt, this material, you were just tasting this inert powder that didn't taste like anything, couldn't preserve your meat, and it was worthless. The only thing you could do was just to throw it out and trample on it again. So Jesus says if salt has lost its taste, how should saltiness be restored? If the sodium chloride has been leached out of this substance, how do you get that back? You can't. What's interesting here is the word Jesus uses for lost its taste. There is no Greek word for lost its taste. The word that Jesus uses here is a word for made foolish. If salt has been made foolish. This is where we get our word moronic. If salt has been made moronic, has been made foolish. This is the same word that Paul uses in 1 Corinthians chapter one to talk about the foolishness of the world. The world believes that they are wise, that they have everything together and the world on its foolishness opposes the wisdom of God revealed in Jesus Christ and him crucified. What Jesus is getting at here as the salt loses its saltiness. He's talking about when the church conforms to the formalistic, legalistic religion of the Pharisees. When the teaching and preaching, when the gospel of the church gets leached out so that it has no more Savior, no more ability to keep the world from running headlong into its corruptions, into its decay, into its deterioration. When the church's religion begins to be shaped more by the fashion and the culture of the world, and not by the teaching of Christ. The pressures of the world on the church, are they everywhere. They are relentless. The world hates what Christ is and who Christ is and what the church preaches from the Bible about Christ. So the world is constantly trying to get us water down this message to the foolishness of the world. While this is a popular and plentiful thing to find religions that are really just parroting the culture's message, ultimately such religion is powerless, absolutely powerless. I once saw a television clip, maybe you've seen it, it's old, it's been passed around a few times. It was a scene portraying a man dying of cancer. As he's dying, he's grappling with his very guilty conscience. He made a very terrible mistake earlier in his life and it led to someone's death, and he's grappling with this and he's trying to figure out how he can be relieved of the burdens of his conscience in this time. So he asked for a chaplain. The hospital chaplain comes, and she encourages him to forgive himself. Well, obviously you just need to forgive yourself. When he hears this, he's angry. He says it's atonement even possible for what I've done. What does God want from me? And then she offers a powerless platitude. She says, "Well, I think it's up to each one of us to interpret what God wants from us." Then the man moved from being angry to being furious, and he threw her out saying, "I want a real chaplain who believes in a real God and a real hell. I need someone who will look me in the eyes and tell me how to find forgiveness because I am running out of time." What Jesus is saying is that the only hope for a corrupt and wicked and guilty and dying world is the gospel of the forgiveness of sins that come to the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Discipleship bears witness to a real Jesus who offers real forgiveness to a corrupt and dying world that is running out of time. How the world needs to hear this message, but oh, how the world will hate this message when it's faithfully proclaimed. Disciples are salt of the Earth. As salt of the Earth disciples who are constantly bearing witness to Jesus, keep the world from straying into corruption, from running headlong into where the sin of this world would carry it, into outright decay and chaos. The world won't thank us for this. And Jesus warns us about persecution, but this is a vital role in the world to preserve it. The Protection for the World Still, what Jesus then next says is that some will be attracted toward the light of believers. Some will be attracted toward this light and find hope and refuge in Jesus through the gospel. That brings us to the third section the protection for the world. Jesus is in verse 14, "You are the light of the world." One commentator, a man named R.C.H. Lenski, says, OK, so salt dealt with the corruption and the foulness of the world. Preserving from decay, giving taste and flavor. Whereas light deals with the darkness and the ignorance and the blindness of the world. Both are getting at the ways in which disciples are faithful witnesses to Jesus in a blind and corrupt world. But they're getting at in different ways. Now, when Jesus says you were the light of the world that should perhaps remind us of something, we should remember that earlier in Matthew 4:16, Matthew told us that Jesus was the light of the world. He did so by quoting Isaiah 9:2. Here's what we read in Matthew 4:16, "The people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death on them, a light has dawned." This is a world where it is darkened, where it is blind. Jesus has come into the world first, we are told, to give great light into a blind and darkened world that walks in the shadow of death. But now Jesus turns around and says that we are the light of the world. Well, Jesus takes that general concept and goes to directions with it. He applies it in two different ways that help to illuminate, pardon the pun, the fullness of what he is trying to tell us. First, he compares us to a city on the hill. He says at the end of verse 14, "A city set on a hill cannot be hidden." Now, to understand what Jesus is saying about this, you have to think about what it was like to be in the ancient world at night. Nighttime was a dangerous place in the in the ancient world. You would have enemies, foreign enemies that you know you couldn't watch from satellites approach. Foreign enemies, approach in a surprise attack at night, and sometimes they would burn and pillage and destroy along the way. If you were outside the walls of that city, it was a very dangerous place to be. It was also a dangerous place from thieves who maybe weren't an army, but they would move and they would plunder and they would pillage. Again, if you weren't inside the safety of the walls of the city, you were in danger, you were vulnerable, you were unprotected in the course of the night. But that city, that city surrounded by safe walls filled with people would cast a light that you think about set on a hill. So it's a fortress that it would be hard to march up to take that city on the hill. People could see it from miles away, especially in days before there were too many streetlamps and things like that with all kinds of light pollution in our world. You could see the city and you recognize if you were vulnerable, that you just had to get to the city to find refuge and safety and protection. Jesus saying this is the corporate witness of the church, this is the corporate witness of my disciples. Especially when we gather on a Lord's day morning, we are light to a vulnerable, scary world. For those who will come into the city and be saved through Jesus. The second thing Jesus says in verse 15 is he individualizes. This it's not just a corporate reality, it's an individual reality. He says, "Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand and it gives light to all in the house." Just as a city on a hill cannot be hidden, so you wouldn't, you shouldn't hide the lamp that you have lit. Instead, what you do is you put that lamp on top of a stand, it's just one lamp, but it gives light to all in the house. Everyone who sees that light is influenced by it. In a city, you can sometimes slip into the background, you can slip into the hustle and bustle, and you don't have to stand out as an individual. And Jesus is saying that in the church, you cannot slip into the background. You can't be ignored and invisible. Instead, you as an individual must have your light shine before the world. And your light will be seen by all. Regardless of how people maybe may respond, they will see your light. So what is the light that Jesus is talking about? Well, he clarifies that in verse 16. He says in the same way, here's the interpretation of the analogy that I'm giving, "In the same way, Jesus says, Let your light shine before others so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven." The light that Jesus talking about is the good works that his disciples perform in the sight of other people. When we read this, we have to sort of peek ahead and Matthew chapter six, Jesus also warned us about performing our good works before others. There though the warning is very clear. He's saying, Don't perform your good works before others. Why? Because if you perform your good works before others to gain credit for yourself and praise for yourself, you've missed the point. You've missed the boat. You will have your reward in full. Don't do that, Jesus says. Do your good works in secret. Then here he is saying, as you live your life in simple, humble obedience to God. Your good works will be a light that all will see. As you do this in humility, other people will come to give glory to your Father who is in heaven as they see the good works that you are performing. Now how do we know what good works are? Well, that's where Jesus is going next in verses 17 and following which Lord willing will look at next week. Jesus is telling us that it's obedience to the moral law of God, particularly summarized in the Ten Commandments. If you want to know the light that you must shine before people if you want to know how to live and obedient life before God. It's all summarized, comprehensively summarized in the Ten Commandments that Jesus has come not to abolish, but to fulfill. Those who dwell in darkness, Jesus is warning us through this image of light. Those who dwell in darkness will walk in darkness. They are blind to what they are doing and they are blind then to where they are going. Probably all of us have had the experience of walking through our houses in the night when it's dark. Maybe I get a little overambitious of where I can walk in the darkness without having to turn on the lights. Maybe I'm trying to save money or just too lazy to turn off lights. Or maybe it's a little bit of an acceptable risk. I don't know, but I walk through the lights and invariably I will find a choice Lego left out by a child or something, a chair that was pulled out that I didn't see and now have a bruise to remind me of it on my shin. When you walk through darkness, even familiar places become places that you don't know what you're doing or where you're going. And Jesus says the whole world lives like this all the time. They can see with their eyes, but they cannot see beyond their eyes. They cannot see the blessedness of disciples whose blessedness cannot be shaken in the gospel. So they are just living according to what they can see, what's right in front of them. It's because of this that we live in such a dark, frightening, horrifying world sometimes. Now we sometimes try to ignore the darkness of the world, we sometimes try to distract ourselves from the darkness of the world. Sometimes we are clever enough to try to dress up the darkness of the world to make it seem less evil than it actually is. But what Jesus says is that doesn't work. Ultimately, it's only light that dispels darkness, the light of the gospel of Jesus Christ. We shine then, as one commentator said, as lights in the world, not as the sun who radiates our own light, see my light. We shine as the Moon, where on the darkest night of full moon lights up everything, so that you see the light reflected and refracted from the blazing sun, our God in heaven. As we trust and obey God, what Jesus says is that the people dwelling in darkness will see a great light, and for those dwelling in the region in the shadow of death on them, a light has dawned. They will not then see our light. They will see the light. The dawning of the Son of God, the true light, the light of life. Application Our application, then of this text is this, bear witness to Jesus in the world, regardless of the cost. Whatever it costs, you, whatever you must sacrifice, the mission and mandate of the church that Jesus has given us is to bear witness to Jesus in the world, whatever it costs us. Discipleship does exactly this, it appears witness to Jesus in the world. Remember, Jesus gives us four reasons to bear witness to him in the world. Because it's worth it, your reward will be great in heaven. Verse 12, to stand faithfully with the forerunners, so they persecuted the prophets. Third, to prevent the world from running headlong into its corruption, as salt of the Earth. Verse 13 and so that others may come to give glory to God as they see the light that we reflect, like moons and reflecting the glory of the sun. Now again, we've read a lot of this in light of the general point that Jesus is making that our blessedness, the blessedness that transcends the momentary suffering of our circumstances. This is still blessed because we are engaged in holding my faith to what Christ has promised us that cannot be taken away. But we need to return our attention to the particular point that Jesus making the blessedness we have in the midst of persecution. Because what Jesus is telling us is that persecution will come to those who follow Christ. Now, let's be very clear we live in an outrage culture. Jesus is not teaching us, coaching us, training us to look for reasons, to find reasons under every rock that we should be triggered and find anger and outrage over. Look at what happened to me. The goal is not to fear and to find persecution under every rock. The goal is rather to be faithful. Jesus and then instead wants to retrain us, to rejoice at persecution whenever we find it, not to recoil from it. Because we recognize in it that our blessedness transcends that situation, transcends the suffering, and that it's unshakable in the glory of Christ. How is this blessedness again? Jesus is teaching us that we are blessed by setting our heart on the Kingdom of Heaven. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness. Blessed are those who are pure and heart. The promise that Jesus has just given us is that if you want Christ's kingdom, then you will get it. That's the gospel promise. When we turn from our sins in order to look to Christ for what he offers us, we will get it. That's the promise. The question, then, is do you really want it? Do you want this kind of a kingdom that isn't promising to enrich you in this life and what you can see, are you willing to set your hope in the world to come? Now in all of this, of course, Jesus isn't suggesting that we should be numb or that we should be impervious to pain and suffering. Remember, Jesus said in verse four, "Blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted." Jesus is offering, setting alongside the invisible kingdom of heaven that we cannot see, alongside a world of tears and suffering that we are always seeing. Jesus is saying blessed are you. It's a balm of comfort when we go through suffering, when we walk through the valley of the shadow of death. If we don't have this comfort, what can you put your hope in? What are you depending upon? Where are you finding your strength, if not in Jesus? In this darkest hour, we don't mourn like those who have no hope because we are not looking to this world for hope. We are looking to the Kingdom of Heaven to give us hope. But Jesus isn't callous, he's not unfeeling. Jesus is the one who wept at the funeral of his friend, whom he knew that he was just about to raise from the dead in just a few more minutes. He wept there seeing the horror of death. He is not saying cheer up. He's not saying, get over it. He's not saying, why are you so sad? He knows our grief. Rather, in the midst of our tears, he's reminding us, strengthening us, re-establishing us, that you have a hope that cannot be taken from you. You have a life that withstands corruption and decay. It's not perishable. Indeed, in Jesus, it was raised imperishable. You have truth that cannot be extinguished. The blazing light of the truth of God that cannot be extinguished. The flower fades, but the word of our God endures forever. Therefore, even when you face life's evil and darkest hour, you will have reason to rejoice. Not because of the evil you face, but because of the hope of the gospel. How then do we move forward? We move forward as we learn to cling to the precious promises that we have in Christ and to learn that there we have reason to rejoice. That in this we have nothing to lose because our hope is in heaven and we have everything to gain. That's why we can rejoice, even in the midst of persecution and great suffering. Therefore rejoice. I'm going to close with a word of comfort from 2 Corinthians 4:16-18. Paul faced far more suffering and persecution and opposition and pain than most of us have. And yet, he writes, "So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away our inner self as being renewed day by day for this light, momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison. As we look not to the things that are seen, but to our ever changing fickle circumstances, but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, they're always moving, always changing, never permanent, always fading away as soon as they get there. The things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal. Brothers and sisters, let us rejoice. If you're looking to Jesus Christ this morning, blessed are you in the hope of the gospel. But if you don't know Jesus, I'm going to call you to this word. There's no hope outside it. There's no place to go outside this. Whatever you are facing now, good or bad, there is far worse suffering to come in eternity to come. Because those who are not looking to Jesus will not experience blessedness, but will experience the eternal condemnation of being separated from God forever. If you don't know Christ, he offers himself to you. And blessed are all those who take refuge in him. Let's pray. Heavenly Father, we pray that you would lead us to unshakable, immovable faith in Jesus Christ. We pray that you would teach us to look to him, to trust in him, to depend upon him as our only rock and hope of salvation. Through the darkest hour, when we faced a sea of corruption and decay, we pray that you would give us strength and hope in the Gospel of Christ. In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.

want to take up much of your time here let's go ahead and jump into this weeks episode episode 16 is about the military-industrial complex in the first topic never to talk about this is a more recent topic in a more recent Miller bulletin that came out under the national terrorism advisory systems this was released on February 7 of 2022 by homeland security and you can find this either on the sub stack or just search the national terrorism advisory system bulletin from February 7 from the Homeland security website and this is a summary this is what it says him to read it verbatim cases the United States remains in a heightened threat environment fueled by several factors including an online environment filled with false or misleading narratives and conspiracy theories in other forms of miss this and mall information which they give an acronym of MDM right we are introduced and/or amplified by foreign and domestic threat actors who these threat actors seek to exacerbate societal friction to sow discord and to undermine the public trust in government institutions to encourage unrest which could potentially inspire acts of violence mass casualty attacks and other acts of targeted violence conducted by lone offenders in small groups acting in furtherance of ideological beliefs and or personal grievances pose an ongoing threat to the nation while the conditions underlying the heightened threat landscape have not significantly changed over the last year the convergence of the following factors has increased the volatility on predictability and complexity of the threat environment the proliferation or the proliferation of false or misleading narratives which sew discord or undermine public trust in US government institutions continued calls for violence directed at US critical infrastructure and soft targets and mass gatherings faith-based institutions such as certain churches synagogues mosques institutions of higher education racial and religious minorities government facilities and personnel including law enforcement and the military the media and perceived ideological opponents and caused by foreign terrorist organizations for attacks on the United States based on recent events so that was a bunch of words basically to say that they are now defining a terrorism threat as having different ideologies and ideological beliefs then our government which you'll see a little bit more they try to pointed out as being foreign threat actors I try to throw that in there three or four times what you know now you there on Instagram you know not you over there that were calling the terrace were: foreign threat actors but but but they give you use the words here because now that the the weight that this holds is one that opens up a Pandora's box of legal ramifications for what they can now do to people that they believe is sowing doubt in governmental narratives so let's go ahead and readable a bit more about this it says the primary terrorism related threat to the United States continues to stem from loan offenders or small cells of individuals were motivated by a range of foreign and or domestic grievances often cultivated through the consumption of certain online content the convergence of violent extremist ideologies false or misleading narratives and conspiracy theories have and will continue to contribute to a heightened threat of violence in the United States Key features contributing to the current heightened threat environment include the proliferation of false or misleading narratives which sold discord or undermined public trust in US government institutions so this is a key factor of contribution to the current heightened terrorism threat environment and it says this the proliferation of false or misleading narratives which sew discord to undermine public trust in US government institutions is the number one key factor contributing to this heightened threat environment according to homeland security that's crazy the next one they state his continued calls for violence directed at US critical infrastructure soft targets and mass gatherings faith-based faith-based institutions such as churches synagogues we talked about that one hey goes on to say that foreign terrorist organizations and domestic front actors continue to amplify pre-existing false or misleading narratives online to sow discord and undermine public trust Fallon extremis inspired by a range of grievances so we have Artie touched all of these also says that as covert restrictions continue to decrease worldwide in nationwide increased access to commercial and government facilities in the rising number of mass gatherings could provide increased opportunities for individuals looking to acts of violence to do so often with little or no warning meanwhile: mitigation measures particularly Cova 19 vaccine mass mandates have been used by domestic violent extremist to justify violence since 2020 while and could continue to inspire these extremist target government healthcare and academic institutions that they institute with those measures and none of this is for sure they give you no reasoning as to why they believe this is now a terrorism threat not a single one they say every single thing on here says it could everything right could meanwhile this could you know have been used by domestic extremists to justify violence it's not about what's going on around sent about things that are happening that make them want to put that push this out it's about who they want to go after you and me people that disagree with the vaccine and mask mandates that's literally on this national terrorism advisory bulletin is about people who disagree and so misinformation about vaccines and masks and now you're a terrorist for doing so for disagreeing with her narrative which consistently has been wrong across the board has been consistently wrong now if you disagree with their wrong narrative completely false information then you can be labeled a terrorist because you have a belief we are now the thought police and were utilizing our US government and our US you know shadow governments like the CIA homeland security NSA and CIA and I think I said CIA and FBI which we can now target people as terrorists for disagreeing with you for disagreeing with our government for disagreeing with Joe Biden for disagreeing with with our governmental institution which is been wrong over and over and over again they been wrong now if you disagree with them in the moment even if they are wrong later you can be labeled a terrorist a national terrorist advisory bulletin for people who disagree with Joe Biden and disagree with the vaccine and mass mandate narratives crazy so it also goes on to say that some domestic violent extremists have configured your continued to advocate for violence response to false or misleading narratives about substantially unsubstantiated election fraud you know the election fraud which is had countless people how lets people arrested for things that are literally old election fraud not to mention the more recent things that have come out about that you know that the GPS tract you mules who are dropping off hundreds if not thousands of votes for people and taking pictures of them in front of the booths dropping them off now if you disagree with that or you mentioned that you so you so doubt in the government you could now be labeled a terrorist honors of this advisory so the next thing is going to say so he then goes on is a small numbers of threat actors are attempting with our threat actors according to them I really like to see us in a home and security definition of a threat after the small number of connectors are attempting to use the evacuation and resettlement of Afghan the nationals following the US military withdrawal from Afghanistan last year as a means to exacerbate long-standing grievances and justify attacks against them as against immigrants but it doesn't give an example none of these gives an example of single one of these and say hey this happened this is going on right now and so were raising our heightened you know are our terrorism advisory right so is is how we are responding says that the FBI will continue the church I'm sure timely and actionable information intelligence with the broadest audience possible yet the FBI's very well known for sharing all of their great information it then goes on to say that we conduct reoccurring threat briefings with private sectors in state and local tribal territory on campus partners including two informant security planning efforts so nothing doing nothing about it says that the DHS office of intelligence and analysis establish a new dedicated domestic terrorism branch to produce the sound timely intelligence needed to counter related threats the department expanded its evaluation of online activity as part of its effort to assess and prevent acts of violence while ensuring the privacy rights of civil rights and civil liberties wow now that's a joke out of course I'm sure you're really ensuring our privacy is a top concern when you're going after literally normal people for having opinions within the domestic a dedicated domestic terrorism branch have we I'm sorry have we had a legitimate domestic terrorism threat or attack in the United States in the last I don't know – gave sure there's been like serious mass shootings which even when they happen and they are more than likely a terrorist act they don't want to call them that right like what was at the I feel like I'm a might be wrong here but I there was the there was that shooting at the management plenty of shootings is been plenty of shootings that could have been labeled terrorist acts that they decided not to label it as it didn't fit the narrative at the time and now they're in a late live in a wholly open eight and higher office of intelligence and analysis for dedicated domestic terrorism branches so the next he says in 2001 there was a debt designated domestic violence extremism as a national priority area within his homeland security grant resulting in $77 million all while the got money for labeling us terrorism there Terrace that's cool ha so says how you can help be prepared statement is to be safe online and don't disagree with us use different. People or else will make you a terrorist interesting so I die I believe that's probably the more concerning things I've seen come out of our government in a very long time that they are literally opened up an entire division of the government specifically to spy and label people domestic terrorists for sowing disbelief in our government for having a belief were literally the thoughtfully but the thought police now you know then in true Orwellian fashion we have a thought police if you disagree and you post it online there's now going to be a dedicated branch of the US government which is going to label you as a potential terrorist threat which is interesting while I talk about this that's Gary that's Gary so well comes with that right what is that really allow them to the what what it will in a what are we gonna do about it is what it says on what really are they gonna do about it there are to enact the patriot act there and a spy on every single person who talks about anything that disagrees with their narrative right because they feel like you're losing ground they feel like they're there they are losing this fight right now and they know it the losing the war on information in their 100% understand this and there scratching at everything that they can to try to win this war back against people from having free thoughts and in speaking them out loud or to tweeting them on twitter right they don't want you doing that because that's what's up you know your information is true and so people believe it and their information is full of shut and so now they want to come after you and him and when you can't win an argument what you do usually turn the labels right many people if there were losing an argument and they can't edge of the note at it when the conversation and educated manner though usually start labeling you a something write the usually start to label you as if in some way that they can now make you the other right like we talked about in the episode about the mass formation psychosis you have to label them the other because before you do there just like you and you can't do the horrific things that generally follow this historically rights you have to make them the other and in the way that they're trying to make us the other right now is by saying hey if you disagree with us if you disagree with our information which is been probably more wrong then correct probably 80% wrong and Leah I mean that's super just frivolously throwing out a number but very very statistically inaccurate information coming out of our government over the last three years I got from the federal interest of the see a spreadsheet of all the things of the government said that has been the held weight and whether or not it was factually accurate and to see what percentages actually come out within the last two years as being actually accurate because I highly doubt it's it's been a very high percentage so it to me that's really concerning and if you are paying attention to this emotion start to because you know if you are in any of these groups any of the circles listening to podcasts in the podcast in sharing this information you could very well find yourself on on the wrong end of this you know advisory system bulletin which is very concerning just holding a belief right just for holding a belief now you can be labeled as the other you can be labeled as in this case a potential terrorist because your sewing disbelief in the government that's horrifying and literally that it is says this it says these threat actors seek to exacerbate societal friction to sow discord and undermine public trust in government institutions to encourage unrest which could potentially it says inspire acts of violence they'll say that this there's been threats of violence don't say that there is this rally and always people are coming in with guns and the minute you know because all this violence it'll say that they say they have thoughts we don't like those thoughts sort and label them terrorists so that we can spy on all of you every single one of you we can now spy on you we can listen to your conversations we can tap your cell phone we do all of this now because we put out this information I says hey we don't like what you're thinking and if you keep thinking that it may potentially possibly with a very very extremely low statistical likelihood lead to violence and because of that belief in my in that there had because of that belief that it could potentially lead to violence now you can be labeled a terrorist this is literally horrifying horrifying that the what will be the ramifications of this what will they now be able to do now that they've put this bulletin on this was released a week ago what are you to be able to do now there going to be able to enact the patriot act for sure if the label you a terrorist because that's the patriot act is for so now because if you so disbelief by disagreeing with her narratives you could now be labeled a terrorist horrifying so on that note let's move on the next topic which is discussing the freedom rally the freedom convoy in this article says Canadian leader Justin Trudeau invokes emergency powers to end disruptive protests so says Prime Minister Justin Trio on Monday invoked emergency powers to disband the truckers and other demonstrators who have been clogging the streets in Canadian capital of Ottawa and block block borders crossing elsewhere to protest over 19 restrictions in invoking Kansas emergency acts which give the federal government broad powers to restore order Trudeau ruled out using the military and said the action would be limited in time and targeted to the trouble spots while that's really reassuring it is no longer a lawful protest at a disagreement over government policy it is now in illegal occupation there literally just playing a word game because these people are making money you know that you know much money truckers make truckers make great money these people are not making more money by sitting there with their trucks not moving with businesses not making an income now it's illegal occupation so all they have to do is label it as that and now they are no longer allowed to say the words that you want to say because now you're no longer protesting your having a legal job because people donated to you and they wouldn't even give you the money but you have to be eventually be paid to further be out of the occupation you'll just get to work for free and then not get paid because the government decides to take your money anyways which is what they try to do with gifts and go some occupation you are literally protesting in there to the end and then the same time there pouring out gallons of fuel right putting out fires taking firewood away when it's probably like -10 in Ottawa right now and they want to freeze these people out so it says and goes on to say basically that the when he invokes these these powers it allows him to use in the same way that they're invoking the power from the national terrorism advisory bulletin the second that they get to say these were that you you do not have this is what this tells me in both of these countries you do not have the right to think you absolutely do not have the right to think on your own will give you that thought until we really don't like it if we really don't like what you're saying or you do it for too long to where we think were to lose were going to now label you a terrorist which is what they did in the United States on February 7 and what they did further Justin Trudeau and this was on February 14 so yesterday so within a week of each other both Canada and the US labeled their own citizens terrorists because they had differing beliefs than what the government holds and they were expressing them truly Tara Tara terrifying terrifying on both accounts and if you're a trucker and you're in Ottawa right now more power to you because this the only way this is going that this is going out and see only way the vaccine passports are in and it's the only way that were gonna win this information battle right that's why I'm sitting here talking about these things seven days after that labeled a thought terrorist if you disagree with the government and on that on the backs of that you know were seeing what's happening in Russia right in the last two days three days the Ukrainian border has basically been flooded with about 70% of Russians military just surrounding the border as a response Joe Biden seems to think that it's time for us to go to war Tubac Ukraine which we've never seem to have any type of vested interest in before this so let's go ahead and watch what Biden has to say on this Russia situation then were going to talk about Biden's role within the military-industrial complex number to talk about the history of the military-industrial complex little bit so stick around with mere but before we do that what did you do if you do it already he didn't get that good karma is go ahead and press the subscribe button I might appreciate it so much go ahead and press it every single week will be putting out episodes will be talking about new topics will be discussing things that they don't want you discussing obviously and hopefully expanding you know it is expanding the base of people who are starting to wake up to this madness that is going on around us so stay along with us join the revolution process subscribe button the next thing I like to offer is if you are finding value in this if you have been a subscriber and you truly find value in what I'm doing here I would ask that you had over please in any way shape or form to support the podcasts I don't make literally but nothing out of this Sunday set the simply said on Instagram that was they say I I have to hold these the side of the opinions because it's my job because I make I it's it's for profit and that's not true I'd make five if I do it we all drew out my hours have probably made like less than $0.10 per hour I truly enjoy talking about these things I truly enjoyed that you know that the community that we've built around these conversations and how thirsty the world is for this, and if you've enjoyed that too I would ask that you do support the podcast in some way shape or form whether that subscribing and listening to every week if you don't have the means to you know donate any amount to this cause but if you do I would appreciate you heading over to rental revolution.give son I'm sorry gifts on go.com/red pill revolution give Sango.com/rental revolution and donate whatever it is to you that this means in and if that's $2.05 dollars $100 $1000 whatever this means you I would appreciate it so much and I'm sure my family would to with how much time I spent on this so the other thing you can do is go to our link three and on link tree there's actually a tip jar right on there you can do you know it's like five bucks 10 bucks in a dollar whatever it is that that this means to you or that you can donate at this time I would really really appreciate it encourages me to keep going and makes my wife think that you know actually doing something with my time so anyways let's go on to the next topic let's go hide and watch as Biden Russia video here and see what he has to say this was to day on the 15th him discussing which says present Biden this is about standing for what we believe in so here it is if Russia decides one day that would also have consequences your dome with the American people understand the defending democracy and liberty is never without cost this is a cause unites Republicans and Democrats and I want to thank the leaders and members of Congress of both parties who fortunately spoken out in defense of our most basic most bipartisan most American principles I will not pretend this will be painless there could be impact on our energy prices so where taking active steps to alleviate the pressure on our own energy markets offset raising prices so I think the and the important thing to see if from then there's this was an 11 minute clip which I'll include in the podcast companion on sub stack so I'm go check it out there but I think the important part of that there was you know it's it's so interesting to me how these politicians like Tryon like assume the sale I think that he knows how weak we call in sales right is like if I use the words as if you're already gonna buy from me then of their likelihood that you buy for me is higher so what he says there is Americans understand that this is going to impact us here at home you know Americans understand and are willing to fight this battle it's like no were not were not the ones profiting off of this film is profiting off of this is probably Hunter Biden there in some way with his beautiful paintings you know the people who are who are making money off of this are the people who were lobbied by you know Lockheed Martin and you know all of these military-industrial complex corporations which have embedded themselves into our political spectrum sense the 40s or since the Cold War at least so he tries to use that in his speech radiantly sees given that you can see what how much is squinting at the Teleprompter that he's really trying to read these words as if he doesn't he's gonna just fall off the rail so he says there you know of men and women in the United States understand that were in a have to give something up and what that something might be is horrific gas prices and energy prices you know trying to find a way to see you know this might even like come back to the freedom convoy for all we know that they're trying to find a reason to point at something else other than their mandates because if you really start to feel the gas prices raising and you also are on the side of the freedom convoy you really might start to put the heat on the government especially from the United States standpoint so this could entirely be a façade to try and you know pass the buck essentially and try to make it seem like it's not their fault for imposing vaccine mandates on Canadian truckers that the gas prices raced like crazy and that the supply chain is basically going to have a really big issue over the next few months when the freedom convoy continues as a result of these totalitarian mandates which need to end no you don't need to label freedom convoy terrorists no you do not need to label people who disagree with the United States government terrorists what you need to do is get rid these stupid ass mandates on governments and on and corporate institutions and on truckers trying to pass through the border to deliver your Amazon falcon package we need to do is stop these bull ship mandates not blame Russia in literally invading Ukraine for rising energy prices now I'm not saying that if Russia goes to war with Ukraine that is not going to have an effect because we believe we do get a large portion of our fossil fuels from Russia specifically like for a very large percentage which could very well impact that because of the sanctions that were can I impose on Ukraine but just know that this you know we haven't had a legitimate war and how long and in and how will you know Joe Biden comes becomes president and within the year we get out of Afghanistan and almost immediately immediately how how long go to get out of Afghanistan how long go to get out of Afghanistan three months for months I leave a note for less than six months ago we left Afghanistan and it almost immediately we begin to find a way to embed ourselves and some other random ass country we have no business being in under the name of democracy Ryan I've seen a ton of people say and I haven't dove deep into the politics of Ukraine but but I see a ton of people saying that do you know Ukraine is even a legitimate democracy and the only reason that were trying to fight this war you know is is basically to keep the war machine turning right as as the Black Sabbath war pigs song goes if you have it you know it does listen to this that the were picks right before it started as it were a black Sabbath war pigs is the single most spine chilling song about the military-industrial complex to listen to it in the theme of this podcast once this is over go ahead and listen to war pigs by Black Sabbath because if you haven't heard in a while a little while you need to hear because that the words are truer now than ever and it's like an ominous ominous deep-seated you know theme song within the military-industrial complex but but these are the war pigs you know Joe Biden's the work picked that that the Chief of Staff is the war pigs the you know the corporations that are need this that need us to jump immediately from Afghanistan over into Ukraine because when you have a entire Melinda how much money to be spent on a military trillions of dollars a minute okay imagine a spirit if you are that's it what's a good example let's use the you know what use let's use the airline industry okay imagine us if the airline industry decided that hey working to continue staffing all of our people but were not gonna fly anymore how well do you think that would go for the shareholders of the airline industry you hello you think Boeing will be doing a fight we have to keep all of these people staffed but were no longer going to have flights at least for the foreseeable future how long do you think that Boeing or Delta a gestalt is a better one is going made the plans and are making a profit anyways but Delta and Boeings actually a huge military-industrial complex player when it comes to the actual Beano aircraft some things but one of the biggest military industrial complex corporations but how will you think they'll to a dude would do if they maintain their staff while also not flying out it would go under with and like 34 months you can't maintain a corporation without paying finding a way to continue the money coming in you have to do what you were designed to do this the same place at the same case in the military if you have a however many soldiers and however many no planes flying in the air on a regular basis and that you know I am wearing this U.S. Air Force shirt because I served in the Air Force served my time in the Air Force before your contract in the Air Force as an air traffic controller between the age of 18 and 22 and so I'm not somebody just coming in here and speaking on these things frivolously I am a patriot I went into the military to fight for my country I had no idea what I was getting myself into and I thought everybody got a gun for some reason 18 I went into fight for my country I'm a patriot I believe in the Constitution I believe and that the flag that flies over our great nation but I do not believe in this government full system I do not believe in Joe Biden's way of trying to incite this war and if I was in the military right now I would be highly concerned about direction especially given the vaccine mandate status especially given that you know that that there were lingering NATO potential world war that couldn't be incited as a result of all of the countries that are good and could potentially get involved in a small conflict in Ukraine I would be highly concerned if I was in the military right now so I speak from the heart I could very well have been 18 right now join the military and been under Joe Biden and that seriously concerns me as as a father as a as a man a military aged man and a veteran mind you so I'm not just speaking on these things frivolously must begin on them because II have no experience with the military I was active duty in the military and because of that it concerns me even more and so to me you have to you have to keep the war machine turning because the second that you're not you're no longer in the conflict we have 800+ military bases across the country across the world I'm sorry don't be nuts if we have crossed the country 800 military bases in the world in many probably more than that if you include the ones that we don't talk about so how well do you think that business would do if they just said were done with more we think that we should be a peaceful nation and we think that we should not involve ourselves in the wars of countries that you know our citizens should not shed blood over how well do you think that was fair for a military as a business and how well you think that would fear for the trillion dollar industry of military-industrial complex corporations that are involved in the lobbying that got Joe Biden even put in the place of the puppeteers could sit there between George Soros and the Rockefeller foundation and pulled his little weekend at Bernie's strings to get him to incite these wars how will you think that will go for them if they just decided to stop and so you cannot stop that is the war machine that is the military-industrial complex it has to keep moving the second we pull out of Afghanistan we have to embed our military somewhere else and find a new conflict to put American lives at stake for because if they stop they will stop making money they will no longer have their business model and then what there's a shop you know CEO of Lockheed Martin or Boeing is just gonna call it a day ago I made enough money guys have enough power no of course not they have to find a way and whether that's in batting threat actors according this online terrorist hood lingo or whether that's sewing this like narrative around the Ukrainian Russian conversation to make it you think and in convince you that we should be shedding American blood over this Russian conflict so let's go on and let's let's learn a little bit about this Joe Biden military-industrial complex conversation I think it's an important one I have this is by the hills so we get to swap some of our favorite favorite people here discuss these topics so let's go ahead and watch this hill which talks about exposing Bidens deep state ties to the military-industrial complex his record on many of these things and his cozy relationship to these companies so many of these facilities are each little black box in terms of clients we really don't know they work for even after all of this research I can only tell you about a couple dirt bike so a lot of guesswork we can see what folks say publicly when they talk about foreign-policy interest it's quite militaristic so we really raises question is about already being influenced by their clients now a president bided that is still coming to fruition but was foreign policy would look like we know he would have a close relationship with someone like me even if I'm not that doesn't really reflect the progressive bushes in the Army so really is these personal relationships that bind in his having developed over years or decades they might have more cash changes ministration actual calls other interesting aspects of your reporting here Wednesday no way binding is operated internationally, it reminded me of the way that we think about trumps foreign policy is all about like relationships and gladhanding and like you trust and who you have close buddy buddy feel for typically argue that buying has essentially taken same personality driven approach to foreign policy just elaborate a little bit on I think Biden is no will of the state he knows these leaders I would make a big station with present truck who really has no right you what he's doing a foreign policy we were talking uninvited is someone who's really using these personal relationships with advanced really the main street really are policy ideas that are all too well known in Washington and frankly have were I mean I remember when VP Biden was in Israel in 2010 and his gang when I was a huge amount of settlement and he still warriors later saying that the number is are you so were really talking about a status quo not as destructive as a pronghorn policy but still you don't knock it and make the massive changes there's a whole industry of think tanks research institutions consultancies are all banking on a return to normal note by item presidency and that's really with these folks represent I'm really glad they say that because it's it's so important to understand The think tank industrial complex in DC that also is very much intertwined with that many of these defense contractors jumping to new way and lay out a little bit about what this means in practical terms for Iraq and Afghanistan two of the most important measures one of the better parts of your piece was actually just about finding is a very strange record where he liked Shane showed restraint but also back to the most disastrous leader like in Iraqi history with no real morality and his you showed terrible instincts in many cases cannulae into a little bit let me first say it's very common for surgeons to do she's motioning to get a huge amount defense funding while Michelle Flournoy was running the tape received at least $4 million worth of funding for defense contractors it's hard to not say it was with people's ideas are so not exactly were hoping to see as far as the actual content there but they touched on a few things which was basically that the two of the main advisors that Biden had originally that was a year old clipper so because there were still discussing Afghanistan but two of the advisors five of Biden's advisors including one who spoke on the specific Ukraine situation within the last week what had immediate ties to the you know military-industrial complex so let's see if we can find there was a clip about him what word that the advisor himself the national security advisor what's this Judge clown's name he looks like the guy from what is that Adam Sandler movie who's the guy with the it's like Adam Sandler's body who like his eye looks this way and happy Gilmore not the big dude but anyways he looks like the clowning of Adam Sandler's body anyways his name is Jake Sullivan he's the national security advisor and he was specifically named in that video as being one who had ties to the military-industrial comfortable form even got to this point and now he this Jake Sullivan is saying that the White House first they are saying that Russia could invade Ukraine before the limp accent which is around the same time that was four days ago that he said that and that's around the same time that the Ukrainian president said yesterday basically that he expects in invasion on Wednesday then he came out and said that he was being ironic or joking which of the div the message that he had on Facebook was not ironic at all it was not funny at all he wasn't joking he was specifically saying that he was going to you know basically invade the invasion was in happened on Wednesday specifically called out as being on Wednesday and then backtracked almost immediately and there a lot of financial institutions and things plummeted as a result so let's go head will read the what he said so this is the president of Ukraine said this on Facebook yesterday which was the 14th so says great people of a great country or of any serious there has been a serious external and internal challenges in front of our country which require responsibility confidence in concrete actions for me in each one of us we are intimidated by a great war and once again set the date of the military invasion is not the first time but our state is stronger today than ever we strive for peace and we want to solve all issues exclusively through negotiations and Don Bass and Crimea will return to reprint only in a diplomatic way we don't stare at someone else's but we won't give our own we have an amazing Army our boys have unique combat experience in modern weaponry this is already eight times stronger than Army eight years ago we are confident in our Armed Forces and our military to should feel or support our togetherness and their unity the basis of our army is the confidence of our own people and a strong economy he then one on to say he then went on to say here that we are intimidated by great where we talk about that we are told that February 16 will be the day of the attack we will make it a union day the decree has already been signed this afternoon we will hang national flags put on yellow and blue ribbons and show the world our unity and then came out and said will lease the presidential advisor Micah Hollow pulled Olea said that Lenski was being not literal but ironic when he said that February 16 will be the day of the attack so Lenski wrote that the Ukrainian government was told that Wednesday would be the day of the attack as he announced a new decree to establish a national day of unity increasing fund the funding of military service people accelerate development of defenses and create an information system to appraise the upright citizens of the national situation were working to get the okay so basically super rear that the Ukrainian president said yeah the 16th is what is happening it's happening on Wednesday but just kidding could you imagine if you lived in Ukraine in your present was like yeah three days from now rush is gonna come across our border news literally see tanks lining up and being you know ran on trains over to your border and you see the Russian government flying you know hundreds of military aircraft over your border and helicopters coming into slick tool role moves over towards your your country and then your president comes out and says Wednesday get ready it's going down GS getting what the fark what in the world if our president said that if they said you know Russia's Adler border and they said Wednesday day Wednesday they're goingto invade we know they're gonna invade were not be together were to have unity were to be in a we believe in our military we have no great weaponry Wednesdays when it's allgonnagodown jus tkidding like how terrifying could you imagine This week's story is the winner of our competition we ran at the end of last year. We talk about keeping a story moving and how to come up with a strong concept.
TITLE: Recovering the Greatness of Christ's Commission SCRIPTURE: Matthew 28:16-20 Quote Slide (centered): OUR MISSION “To glorify God by the fulfillment of the Great Commission in the spirit of the Great Commandment.” New Slide: BIG IDEA: We greatly underestimate the greatness of the Great Commission Sermon Points We must recover the conviction that Jesus Christ sends us as his ambassadors with 1. His Divine Power | He has ALL Authority (v.18) 1A. A Present Reality Scripture Slide: “I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him. And to him [the Son of Man] was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.” (Daniel 7:13-14) 1B. A Pervasive Reality Quote Slide: “Who can fathom this brief utterance of Jesus? The kingly authority of Jesus embraces heaven, all that lives and has its being there, angels and archangels, powers, principalities, might, dominion, thrones, and the saints in glory. This authority is exercised also over the evil spirit world, whose prince is conquered and despoiled, and whose hosts lie in abject submission beneath Jesus' feet. All the powers of heaven are in his hand to do his bidding without question or pause. This the disciples are to realize as Jesus sends them forth. Never did a human army have such resources behind it. All the earth is also subject to him, its inhabitants, both friend and foe, and all the powers that are in the earth.” (R.H. Lenski) 2. To Accomplish His Purpose | Make Disciples of ALL Nations (v.19a) Quote Slide: “The life of a disciple is different because of his attachment to Jesus. The Master is not giving a command that will merely secure nominal adherence to a group, but one that will secure wholehearted commitment to a person.” (Leon Morris) Quote Slide: “His "all authority" over "all the nations" demands we preach His crown rights over all men and all their institutions, cultures, societies, and nations. The saving of multitudes of individuals must eventually lead to cultural Christianization under Christ's rule and to His glory by His providence, in conformity with God's creational purpose.” (Kenneth Gentry) 3. According to His Plan | Baptizing and Teaching Obedience to ALL His Commands (v.19b-20a) Quote Slide: “A piety which concerns itself only with man's soul and leaves the world to the devil is a profane piety.” (R.J. Rushdoony) Expectations of the Kingdom Growth The Mustard Seed (Matt. 13:31-32) The Leaven (Matt. 13:33-34) Mixed responses Parable of the Sower (Matt 13:1-23) Weeds and Wheat (Matt. 13:24-30) The Net (Matt. 13:47-50) Joy Hidden Treasure (Matt. 13:44) Pearl of Great Price (Matt. 13:45-46) Rewards for Faithfulness & Increase Faithful & Wicked Servant (Matt. 24:45-51) Talents (Matt. 25:14-30) 4. With the Promise of His Presence | He will be with us ALWAYS! (v.20b) Quote Slide: “The God of Israel, the Saviour, is sometimes a God that hideth himself (Isa. 45:15), but never a God that absenteth himself; sometimes in the dark, but never at a distance.” (Matthew Henry) New Slide: We must recover the conviction that Jesus Christ sends us as his ambassadors with His Divine Power to accomplish His Purpose according to His Plan with the Promise of His Presence.

The tragedy of the commons is a frequent excuse for the often ill effects of efficient corporate industry. Curbing bad behavior can seem impossible - so we look to see how biology beats cheaters throughout the natural world. In the process, mother nature schools us in corporate accountability. Fortunately, cheaters don't seem to win in the long run! Building on our discussion of the Red Queen hypothesis last week, we're going to go through a theorem which is similarly chess-themed but goes against our hypothesis from episode 20. This theory holds that, rather than continual evolution being necessary for a species to survive, natural selection can sometimes allow genes to be lost from the gene pool. Today’s ID the Future extends the discussion of A Mousetrap for Darwin: Michael Behe Answers His Critics, the newest book from Discovery Institute Press. Here the focus is on Parts 4 and 7 of the new book, and in particular Richard Lenski’s Long Term Evolution Experiment at Michigan State. What has this long-running project demonstrated? As Behe explains in the book (and elaborates on in today’s podcast), “The study has addressed some narrow points of peculiar interest to evolutionary population geneticists, but for proponents of intelligent design the bottom line is that the great majority of even beneficial mutations have turned out to be due to the breaking, degrading, or minor tweaking of pre-existing genes or regulatory regions. Disciple Up # 186 Greater Than, Part 4 Jesus Suffered & Understands Our Suffering; Hebrews 2:5-18 By Louie Marsh, 11-18-2020 Intro. Angels Won't Rule the World - Hebrews 2:5-8 “5For it was not to angels that God subjected the world to come, of which we are speaking. 6It has been testified somewhere, “What is man, that you are mindful of him, or the son of man, that you care for him? 7You made him for a little while lower than the angels; you have crowned him with glory and honor, 8putting everything in subjection under his feet.” Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control. At present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him.” (Hebrews 2:5–8, ESV) The words “put in subjection” are the translation of hupotasso (ὑποτασσο), a military term used of arranging soldiers in order under the commanding general. The word speaks of an economy, a system of administration. - Wuest, K. S. (1997). Wuest's word studies from the Greek New Testament: for the English reader (Vol. 10, p. 54). Grand Rapids: Eerdmans. This speaks to the order that God always brings to things. Even when we can't see it or understand it, it's there. Which is why Paul says that God is not a God of confusion but of peace. – 1 Corinthians 14:33 We still marvel at the way nature works to this very day. We marvel at how human creativity works, at how things often seem to come together. This is why people say ignorant things like, “The universe brings this to me.” NO, it's not the universe – the universe is just an inanimate created thing. IT's God's creation and the order He built into the universe that does all these things. Give Him the glory NOT the things He created! This isn't the usual word for world we see – Kosmos. Kosmos means a world system or what we call culture. But this word means… The word “world” is the translation of oikoumene (οἰκουμενε), literally, “the inhabited earth,” - Wuest, K. S. (1997). Wuest's word studies from the Greek New Testament: for the English reader (Vol. 10, p. 54). Grand Rapids: Eerdmans. So he's really talking about people here. In the world to come – Millennial Kingdom, whatever, Angels won't be ruling over people. God and His people will rule. 6It has been testified somewhere… (Hebrews 2:6a) I love this! He doesn't have the reference in mind but correctly quotes the verses anyway! Here's the reference from Psalm 8 “4what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him? 5Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. 6You have given him dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under his feet,” (Psalm 8:4–6, ESV) But this isn't happening right now. …Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control. At present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him.” (Hebrews 2:8b, ESV) This is another example of the realism of the Bible. Obviously this world isn't under subjection to God and the Bible makes no attempt to pretend that it is. But someday it will be and that's what this passage is talking about. The Incarnation: “9But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.” (Hebrews 2:9, ESV) Note here how the incarnation and Christ's work on the cross is described: Lower than the angels for a little while. Crowned with glory and honor because he suffered and died He died for everyone “10For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering. 11For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers, 12saying, “I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will sing your praise.” 13And again, “I will put my trust in him.” And again, “Behold, I and the children God has given me.”” (Hebrews 2:10–13, ESV) Why is it fitting that Jesus had to suffer? For it was fitting for him, on account of whom (are) all the (existing) things and through whom (are) all the (existing) things, that he as bringing many sons to glory make the Author of their salvation complete by means of suffering. In the case of the Messiah suffering is so far from being an outrageous idea that in the accomplishment of God's grace, that of bringing many sons to glory, it positively accorded with his own nature and his relation to all things to make the Author of their salvation the Author that he is by means of suffering. Nothing else would have befitted God, all Jewish and all human preconceptions to the contrary notwithstanding. The writer does not speak of necessity although one might say that what is fitting and proper for God is, therefore, also necessary for him, for God cannot act in a manner that is unbefitting him. The fact that αὐτῷ refers to God and not to Jesus needs no proof. God is the agent of the passive participles used in v. 9 as he is the agent also of this new sentence. To aid us in understanding his thought the writer does not merely say that “it is fitting for God” but that it is fitting “for him on account of whom all the (existing) things (are) and through whom all the (existing) things (are),” τὰ πάντα as in v. 8. The two διά clauses declare that all the things that exist and occur do so “because of him” and “through him”: they are on God's account, for his sake (i. e., for his glory), as they are also due to his agency (his hand being involved in them all.) - Lenski, R. C. H. (1938). The interpretation of the Epistle to the Hebrews and of the Epistle of James (pp. 79–80). Columbus, OH: Lutheran Book Concern. So Lenski is saying that it's fitting because it's connected with God's nature and His relationships with His created beings to bring about salvation thru suffering. Man brought sin into the world, sin brings suffering, God suffers to free us from sin and suffering. One source? The words “of one” are literally, “out of one.” We have the ablative of source here. That is, the Lord Jesus and the saints, are all out of one source. Because the Lord Jesus and the saints are all out of one source, the writer says that He is not ashamed to call the saints His brethren. The Greek word for brother (adelphos (ἀδελφος)) means “from the same womb.” That one source is God the Father - Wuest, K. S. (1997). Wuest's word studies from the Greek New Testament: for the English reader (Vol. 10, p. 61). Grand Rapids: Eerdmans. How Redemption Works: “14Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. 16For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham. 17Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.” (Hebrews 2:14–18, ESV) The Devil is destroyed Vs. 14 He destroys the devil by first of all removing his authority over death and hell. That now belongs to Jesus thanks to His death, burial and resurrection. “18and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades.” (Revelation 1:18, ESV) Our Fear of Death is Removed Vs. 15-16 Once we come to Christ we no longer have to fear death. This doesn't mean many of us don't, just that we have no reason too thanks to the finished work of Christ on the Cross. He also circles back to his earlier theme of the angels when he mentions Jesus isn't doing this for the angels. To Fully Redeem He Had to Be Fully Human- Vs. 17 Propitiation – removing God's wrath from those who have sinned. Jesus did this by suffering, bleeding and dying on the cross as a man. Because He is both God and Man He Understands Our Suffering. – Vs. 18 Now – because He has suffered – He can completely understand our suffering, whatever that suffering may be.
A conversation with Noel Lenski (Yale University) on "slave societies" and how the institution of slavery changed in late antiquity and Byzantium. Were tasks performed by slaves in antiquity carried out by free people in late antiquity? What were the experiences of Byzantines who were themselves captured in raids and taken outside the empire? The conversation draws on many of Noel's publications, including 'Framing the Question: What is a Slave Society?,' in N. Lenski and C. Cameron, eds. What is a Slave Society? The Practice of Slavery in Global Perspective (Cambridge University Press 2018) 15-57; 'Searching for Slave Teachers in Late Antiquity,' Révue des études tardo-antiques 12, suppl. 8 (2018-2019) 127-191; 'Captivity and Slavery among the Saracens in Late Antiquity (ca. 250 - 630 CE),' Antiquité tardive 19 (2011) 237-266; and others (see here for more).
Disciple Up # 183 When God Speaks…Listen! By Louie Marsh, 10-29-2020 Intro. Thoughts on last week's episode – No Place for Repentance? Sad that many leave their hidden sin as their legacy. There are at least three times in the New Testament when God seems to have been rude to the Apostle Peter. Three times when God interrupted and silenced Peter to make a point. What was so important that God decided to act like this? Let's find out. I) The Content of Christianity About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray. As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. They spoke about his departure, which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem. Peter and his companions were very sleepy, but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, "Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters--one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah." (He did not know what he was saying.) While he was speaking, a cloud appeared and enveloped them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. A voice came from the cloud, saying, "This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him." When the voice had spoken, they found that Jesus was alone. The disciples kept this to themselves, and told no one at that time what they had seen. Luke 9:28-36 (NIV) A) The Three Figures 1, Moses = the Law 2, Elijah = the prophets 3, Jesus = the New Covenant B) Peter Vs. God 1, Peter saw all three as equal and valued them that way 2, God set Jesus above them all “16“The Law and the Prophets were until John; since then the good news of the kingdom of God is preached, and everyone forces his way into it.” (Luke 16:16, ESV) The law and the prophets—till John; from then on the kingdom of God is being preached as good news, and everyone is energetically pressing into it[1] C) Christianity's Content 1, Christ is superior to all and everything a, That's the whole point of the book of Hebrews! 2, To be a Christian is to realize and confess that Jesus outshines and rules over everything! II) The Foundation of Christianity 16:13-23 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say the Son of Man is?" They replied, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets." "But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?" Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven. And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." Then he warned his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Christ. From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life. Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. "Never, Lord!" he said. "This shall never happen to you!" Jesus turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men." Matthew 16:13-23 (NIV) A) The Divinity of Christ 1, Jesus was either Who He claimed to be - God a, Or He was a lair or insane! B) No Compromise! 1, Compromise is a good way to solve problems! a, But there are some things that you can't compromise! 2, You cannot compromise on Christ's identify a, If we lose this - we lose the entire point and meaning of His life and teachings! C) Living This Truth 1, Obey Him!!! a, If He really is God that's the least we can do!! 2, Don't argue so much! a, It's good to let it all hang out with the Lord. b, One sign of spiritual growth is when I argue less and trust more! III) The Sphere of Christianity Acts 10: 41-48 He was not seen by all the people, but by witnesses whom God had already chosen--by us who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name." While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles. For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. Then Peter said, "Can anyone keep these people from being baptized with water? They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have." So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked Peter to stay with them for a few days. Acts 10:41-48 (NIV) A) Not An Exclusive Club! 1, Not just for Jews - or the spiritual 2, But for Everybody! B) God Love Everyone 1, There can be no place for bigotry in the Christian faith! 2, That includes all types of bigotry - racial, cultural, educational, religious, etc. C) We Are All One In Christ 1, the more we realize this - the quicker the world will be won! As humans, we have a hard time setting aside our own opinions and beliefs to consider someone else’s. This is especially true when it’s something we care about. So we cluster ourselves in communities with those who think like us, avoiding confrontation at all costs. This begs the question: is it possible to have strong conflicting opinions and still maintain strong relationships? Today’s guest, Dr. Tammy Lenski believes we can and we must. The goal is not to avoid conflict. It’s to engage in it more constructively. As a conflict resolution writer, speaker, and teacher, Dr. Lenski works with people who want to or must stay together but are living in a state of tension. She helps buffer their relationships from the negative effects of conflict. On this episode we discuss: What happens when we avoid conflict in our lives and work,; The difference between being submissive, assertive, and aggressive and what we should aim for; Positive outcomes that are associated with productive arguments; How to name a problem in a way that’s useful; and The easiest way to approach difficult conversations. Disciple Up # 179 Greater Than, Pt. 2, Greater Than the Angels; Hebrews 1: 5-14 By Louie Marsh, 9-30-2020 Intro: Last week add on - Nostalgia VS relevance New Bible Study Software – Its not the same! No, push on, learn, grow, and discover new things. GREATER THAN – HEBREWS Part Two: Greater Than the Angels Hebrews 1:5-14 Why the whole Angels Thing? Angels are worshipped and misunderstood today: https://www.powerofpositivity.com/5-ways-to-connect-with-angels/ “5For to which of the angels did God ever say, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you”? Or again, “I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son”? “I myself have begotten thee” is figurative for God's placing David's Son, the heir of all things (v. 2), on his everlasting throne in the eternal kingdom. The inauguration of such a King is for Yahweh the begetting of a Son who rules like Yahweh himself. This inauguration is attested throughout the Old Testament and culminates, as Paul says in Acts 13:33, in the resurrection of Jesus. - Lenski, R. C. H. (1938). The interpretation of the Epistle to the Hebrews and of the Epistle of James (p. 46). Columbus, OH: Lutheran Book Concern. 6And again, when he brings the firstborn into the world, he says, “Let all God's angels worship him.” 7Of the angels he says, “He makes his angels winds, and his ministers a flame of fire.” 8But of the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom. 9You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions.” 10And, “You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the work of your hands; 11they will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment, 12like a robe you will roll them up, like a garment they will be changed. But you are the same, and your years will have no end.” 13And to which of the angels has he ever said, “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet”? 14Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation?” (Hebrews 1:5–14, ESV)

Season 2. Episode 18: Elisabeth on Alexander Pushkin’s Dual Welcome to Tea, Toast and Trivia. Thank you for listening in. Elisabeth van der Meer from the extraordinary blog, A Russian Affair, has once again joined me from the far distance of 7,514 km or 4,669 miles. We are connecting Finland and Canada via Russian Literature. Elisabeth has come back to discuss Alexander Pushkin, poet, playwright and novelist of the Romantic era. He is considered the father of modern Russian literature and some say that he was the greatest of all Russian writers. Bold, impetuous and daring, he lived with enthusiasm. So, put the kettle on and add to this exciting conversation. I am your host Rebecca Budd and I’m looking forward to sharing this moment with you. I highly recommend Elisabeth’s “The Eugene Onegin Challenge” that is happening on her blog, A Russian Affair. Right now, I am reading Alexander Pushkin’s masterpiece, Eugene Onegin, which he wrote over the course of eight years. Elisabeth has introduced the characters, Onegin, Lenski, Tatyana, Olga, and yes, Pushkin. The adventure is ready to begin… “With this challenge I hope to add something extra to your reading experience that will make it more interesting, intense, attentive, and (even more) enjoyable. I will be eating, dreaming, thinking, hearing Eugene Onegin for the next four months and I can’t wait to find out what the end result will be!” Elisabeth van der Meer Music by Leimoti, "Jeanne in a Waltz" Epidemic Sound

So where did Valentine's Day come from? "Later, Pope Gelasius I muddled things in the 5th century by combining St. Valentine's Day with Lupercalia to expel the pagan rituals. But the festival was more of a theatrical interpretation of what it had once been. Lenski adds, "It was a little more of a drunken revel, but the Christians put clothes back on it. That didn't stop it from being a day of fertility and love."1. Exodus 20:2-6 Names of God Bible (NOG) 2 “I am Yahweh your Elohim, who brought you out of slavery in Egypt. 3 “Never have any other god. 4 Never make your own carved idols or statues that represent any creature in the sky, on the earth, or in the water. 5 Never worship them or serve them, because I, Yahweh your Elohim, am El Kanna. I punish children for their parents’ sins to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me. 6 But I show mercy to thousands of generations of those who love me and obey my commandments. Deuteronomy 12:31 Names of God Bible (NOG) 31 Never worship Yahweh your Elohim in the way they worship their gods, because everything they do for their gods is disgusting to Yahweh. He hates it! The opera Eugene Onegin is based on a beloved Russian lyric novel of the same name by Pushkin. Pushkin presents a vast overview of old Russian society around 1820, which Tchaikovsky’s original score neatly divides into each of its three acts: from the timeless rituals of country life to the rural gentry with its troubles and pleasures and, finally, the glittering imperial aristocracy of St. Petersburg. The opera tells the story of Tatyana, her sister Olga, and their loves Onegin and Lenski. The famous "Letter Scene," gives us an insight into the character when the intelligent and socially awkward young Tatyana pours out her heart to the cold Onegin in a tale of unrequited love. A spectacular birthday ball, a duel follow with a glittering, if conflicted end at a society ball in St. Petersburg where Onegin and Tatyana are reunited.

After his postdoctoral research grant was canceled, Lenski began to look tentatively at other options. With one child and a second on the way, Lenski attended a seminar about using specific types of data in an actuarial context—the same type of data he had worked with as a graduate student.
You could call this story an epic “Opportunity Lost.” You talk about a guy presented with a once-in-a-lifetime golden opportunity, an opportunity that he squandered. An opportunity that he squandered Badly.And.Sadly. As you will hear in this PODCAST, we're talking about an offer rarely made, and shockingly dismissed. A young man who burst on the scene like a blazing comet streaking overhead, only to flame out and fall out of the sky to come crashing and burning to earth. What a story! One thing’s for sure. Jesus never took a class on Personal Evangelism. Because, to be honest, Jesus Broke.Every.Rule of personal evangelism in this very personal encounter. Here you have what we call in our contemporary Christian culture a seeker coming to Jesus to ask Him one question. THE question. The single most important question. A softball question that any one of us could answer. His question? “What should I do to inherit eternal life?” This young man asked Jesus exactly the right question, to which Jesus gave him exactly the wrong answer! Or did He? Don’t fault me for asking that. Jesus’ own disciples thought that Jesus gave him the wrong answer. Check it out: The disciples were “astounded and astonished” when they heard Jesus’ answer. All this guy needed to do, all that Jesus needed to tell him to do, was to pray a “Jesus, come into my heart” prayer, right? Yet, by the time Jesus got done with him? The young man walked away. In the words of the noted Lutheran New Testament scholar, R.C.H. Lenski, “Picture him: an exemplary young man in early manhood, fine and clean morally as the phrase now goes… wealthy... with a strong religious bent… a pillar (in the community)... Where is the church that would not give him a prominent place?... Yet all this is in the eyes of Jesus… worthless.” Yeah verily, I will add, so worthless that Jesus offended him. Lost him. Drove him away. Know why? Please remember that depending upon your web browser and connection speed, it may take up to 60 seconds for this podcast to begin to play. God bless you richly as you listen.

Life Group Greek: Lesson 5- Balancing In English, and particularly since the introduction of word processors, we have numerous ways of emphasizing our written words. We can use bold font, or underline word, or we can capitalize letters, or we can use punctuation. But the ancient Greek writers did not have these tools at their disposal. Instead they used word order or key words, or they used the sentence subject twice. Matthew for example, frequently uses the Greek word “idou” for emphasis. When it is translated, the word can mean, “behold,” or, “look,” or “see.” Several examples of these techniques are shown in this lesson. The arch of Constantine has long puzzled scholars trying to trace the religious development of the first Christian emperor. Dedicated just three years after his victory at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge, the arch shows no trace of the Christian inspiration said to have led to Constantine's victory by Eusebius and Lactantius. Lenski argues that the arch's inscription represents not a Christian but a pagan interpretation of the victory put forward by the Roman Senate, adding further refinements to this earlier argument based on the arch's iconography. He will examine the many representations of the sun god on the monument to show that the arch's designers wished to credit Constantine's success to the intervention of Sol Invictus. He will then examine the role assigned to the Senate itself on the arch's reliefs and particularly in the two Constantinian friezes on the arch's northern side. The prominent place of senators seems designed to co-opt Constantine into the Roman Senate and its ideology and thereby to ensure his acceptance of its version of the events surrounding the Battle of the Milvian Bridge.

Lenski's Long Term Evolution Experiment with E. coli has seen over 50,000 new generations since its inception in 1998. This has led to insights such as how viruses can evolve from types that don't infect humans to ones that do. Lenski's work with E. coli has also led him into the digital world. Using computers, Lenski can achieve precise, rapid results by manipulating digital organisms. Software that evolves much like bacteria in the real world. Lenski is optimistic about the future of evolution research. Applying the generalities that have resulted from his studies to any number of other microbial species. He also sees large potential in applying what he's learned to the study of antibiotic resistance and bioengery.
