https://www.zaksandler.com/ https://www.instagram.com/bipolar_broadway/ Zak Sandler has played piano on Broadway for Wicked, Mean Girls, Motown, and The Color Purple. His original musical about his mental health journey, Inside My Head, premiered at the NY Theatre Barn, was selected as a semi-finalist at the O'Neill Theater's National Music Theater Conference, and presented at the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage. Zak revised the show as a writer-in-residence at the Kennedy Center's REACH page-to-stage festival in January 2022. He is touring the show - which includes a group discussion - to colleges, high schools, mental health and non-profit organizations, medical schools, companies, and anyone else who wants to host this inspiring, life changing event. Virtual performances are available, though in-person is preferred! In addition to Inside My Head, Zak is creating a docuseries about the connection between mental conditions and creativity, called Insanely Talented. He is co-writing three shows with the brilliant and lovely Adele Powers: Anthem, a musical that explores why we sing the national anthem (conceived by Rachel Payne); a musical about a unicorn called That Musical About a Unicorn; and a musical about Judaism, called Happy Challah Days: A Jewish Revue-ish. Zak is also arranging and co-orchestrating Unlimited, a musical revue of the work of Stephen Schwartz's (composer of Wicked, Pippin, Godspell, and Children of Eden, and soundtracks of the Hunchback of Notre Dame, Prince of Egypt, Pocahontas, and Enchanted). Zak has won several music awards including the Fenno Heath Award for writing the new Yale song, the Neva Greenwood award for writing a symphony in 8th grade, the Mount Vernon Piano Competition (playing “Rhapsody in Blue” with the Mount Vernon Orchestra in 8th grade), and was selected as a composer for the Johnny Mercer Songwriters Project at Northwestern (a mixture of a thrilling week of writing, and a deep depression). https://www.insidemyheadmusical.com/ Zak graduated from Yale with a BA in music composition in 2008 - two years after his exhilarating and terrifying first psychotic episode. He is very glad that he returned to school for the following semester, following his psychiatrist's advice. Beyond musical theater, Zak is an avid mental health activist, speaking about his mental conditions on “This is Actually Happening” (podcast with 45K+ plays), and “Moments of Clarity” (radio show with 1M+ listeners). In 2018, he won the Young Leader Award from the New York State chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), and is a featured speaker with This is My Brave, RespectAbility, and the JED Foundation. Zak's hobbies include barbershop singing (he is a member of the Alexandria Harmonizers, a choir of 60 people who age from their 20s to 80s!), playing golf, watching college basketball, spending time with his cats, eating fancy food (usually vegetarian), traveling (he has been to 48 US states and 26 countries), and, after years of resisting TV, watching shows like “Grace and Frankie” and “The Ultimatum” with his fiancee, Lenna. He feels incredibly grateful to have her and the rest of his family and friends in his life. Zak tries not to use phrases "mental illness" or "bipolar disorder", because he feels they imply there's something wrong with him (although he knows those terms fit well for some of us). He prefers the terms “mental conditions” and simply, “bipolar”. https://soundcloud.com/zaksandler/mental-episode-1-from-a-bit-too-much-about-me --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bravemaker/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bravemaker/support

Deeply entrenched stigmas and taboos are hard to overcome. But if there's anyone who can effect transformational change it would have to be Suhani Jalota, the social entrepreneur Dr. Dweck and Rachel welcome on this episode of The Busine$$ of the V. She has not only founded the visionary Myna Mahila Foundation to educate and debunk disempowering myths about menstruation prevalent in India, she's ultimately seeking to do nothing short of revolutionize the Indian economy to equalize the power of women within their households. It's an amazing agenda for anyone, but particularly for such a young woman. Suhani has secured a PhD in Health Policy and Economics as well as an MBA at Stanford while overseeing the mission of the Myna Mahila Foundation, which was founded in 2015 to provide a voice for adolescent girls and women in marginalized communities. She is building a team and network for young female entrepreneurs and leveraging technology to provide access to job opportunities throughout the world – work that has not gone unnoticed. She has been honored with the 2017 Queen's Young Leader Award and featured in the Forbes Asia 30 under 30, not to mention receiving an invite to Meghan Markle's royal wedding. (Yes, the experience was amazing!) You'll learn about the origins of her vision (as an undergrad), the cultural barriers her organization is breaking down and what is on the horizon for a young woman who clearly has barely begun the work she intends to do. It's exciting and heartening for Rachel, who shares an alma mater (Duke University) and longtime alliance with Suhani. “The gender attitude has to change,” says this social entrepreneur. And she's developing the tools, network and platforms to do exactly that! Subscribe to our newsletter and complete show notes for every episode at https://businessofthev.com

The SCC aims at identifying strategies that will strengthen the social connections of men who are struggling with isolation and poor mental health, particularly in the wake of COVID-19 lockdowns. Results of a study commissioned by Movember in May 2020 found that nearly a quarter of men globally (23 percent) reported their mental health had worsened in the first six weeks of the pandemic. So this funding is also helping Hunter develop the Man Cave TV featuring funny, educational, and dynamic video content on topics such as sex, death, wellbeing, and relationships.Hunter is passionate about making a social change having seen Jp the impacts of mental illness, depression, and domestic violence in his own teen years. “I saw a lot of guys who we really cared about experiencing years of anxiety and depression and unfortunately suicide – but no one talking about it. And so we thought if we could just create a space where young me could open up, start to develop some language, and have the permission to be a bit more intimate and vulnerable and make that cool and normal, then the world would be a much better place.”So, in 2014 The Man Cave was created with their first-ever workshop kicking off at Frankston High School and since then, the program has gone from strength to strength - also receiving international recognition – when the Royal Family flies you over to accept the Queen's Young Leader Award, it's a good sign you're on the right track! The Man Cave concept is to send relatable charismatic male facilitators into high schools who create a safe space for young men to “take off the mask they wear every day.” The workshops are designed to make the boys realize that some of the challenges they face are widely shared by their peers, they're not alone, and then give them the practical and emotional tools to navigate through this part of their life.Their team of facilitators has been hand-picked to connect with the boys at a level that engenders trust and engagement.  Hunter describes his facilitators as wide-ranging; “…from your classic Melbourne hipster to a salt-of-the-earth country bloke to an indigenous Australia to a former refugee, a former child soldier. The idea is that our boys that we work with see a piece of themselves in the role models coming into their schools.”The program creates a safe place amongst the boys to discuss how they see the societal rules of being a man in comparison to their own version of masculinity.

Welcome back to Ctrl Alt Delete Podcast – this is a very special one! I got to record a very special episode at the Queen’s Young Leaders Ceremony from Buckingham Palace…(and I got meet the Queen!)I was there to celebrate the Queen’s Young Leaders Award. It’s a real honour to be there for the final ever Queen’s Young Leader Award ceremony and celebrate the amazing work these young people are doing all over the Commonwealth. Collectively, they’re tackling a huge range of issues, from climate change, to mental health stigma, to gender based violence. These guys really show just how important young people are to tackling some of the world’s most pressing problems.I chatted to Siposetu Sethu Mbuli from South Africa. Siposetu is developing new ways to end the stigma of albinism in South Africa. Growing up with albinism herself, and mindful of the misconceptions that still exist around it, Siposetu co-founded Love, This Skin. I also chatted to Harry Phinda, who promotes the rights of women and girls through education. He is the co-founder of Youth for Change (YFC), which is a global youth led organisation that works in partnership with organisations and governments to tackle gender-based violence and to create positive change. You will also be inspired by Alexia Hilbertidou, who is inspiring young women in New Zealand to become leaders in the fields of science, technology, engineering and maths (also known as STEM), leadership and entrepreneurship. In the Green Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace, I chatted with YouTuber Caspar Lee, Nicola Adams OBE and some more of the Queens Young Leaders themselves. The young people dedicated to changing the world received a Queen’s Young Leader Award from Her Majesty The Queen at Buckingham Palace. This year’s group of Award winners are from 38 Commonwealth countries and work across a wide range of issues and are finding solutions to global issues such as climate change, food scarcity, gender-based violence, mental health, and access to education. Now in its fourth and final year, the Programme has created a powerful network of 240 Award winners who have incredible leadership potential and passion to make the world a better place. The now complete Queen’s Young Leaders network is a lasting legacy to Her Majesty The Queen, as they connect, collaborate and continue to change lives for years to come. I had the opportunity to see Brittni Darras speak at TedX MileHigh this summer, and after a room of 2500 people gave her a standing ovation, I knew I really wanted to have her and her inspiring story on Extraordinary Women Radio! Brittni is a high school English teacher who hand-wrote personalized cards to her 130 students following a student’s suicide attempt. Her story - which went viral - is heartfelt and inspiring and has spread kindness and positivity around the world. She tells us how kind words can make a difference in the lives of many. Brittni speaks my own love-language, as she talks about the importance of getting to know someone for who they truly are at a deep level - and then taking the time to really acknowledge all that is wonderful about that person back to that person. Brittni has created such a huge ripple effect student-by-student, but has also inspired others to create their own unique ways of spreading love. It's about lifting our whole society at a time when our world needs uplifting! She tells us why small gestures make a big impact! Her story has received worldwide attention and earned her the Aspen Pointe Hero of Mental Health Award and the Mayor’s Young Leader Award in the category of Innovation in Education. Brittni is an advocate for suicide prevention and mental health awareness. To learn more about Brittni's work visit her Facebook page.
