This Is My Brave with Jennifer Marshall, Episode #149 Jennifer Marshall is the founder of “This Is My Brave,” the leading platform for individuals to share their stories of overcoming mental illness through creative expression. Jennifer formed the organization after experiencing a positive outpouring of support following the publication of her story on a well-known news website.  She wanted to provide that same opportunity to others living with mental illness. She envisioned a theater show concept, and together with her Co-Founder Anne Marie Ames, launched the project on Kickstarter. The project was successfully funded within 31 days, raising over $10,000 to create the inaugural show.  “This is My Brave” continued to expand and became a national non-profit organization that has created over 90+ shows in cities across the country (and in Australia).  Jennifer routinely speaks on the importance of sharing stories of triumphing despite mental illness to end stigma. She speaks regularly at mental health and storytelling conferences. I'm so delighted to bring you this interview in recognition of Suicide Awareness Month. Why? Erin Gallagher, current interim executive director of This Is My Brave, is going to tell you about the life and suicidal death of her son, Jay. His life was ended after his high school had been alerted there were warning signs – big ones – very alarming ones – and because he didn't “seem” depressed and denied it, they ignored these signs. They didn't dig any further than Jay saying, “No I'm not depressed.” Erin has poured herself into learning more about why this school counselor didn't search further. Why Jay was believed so readily. Our paths met because of my work in perfectly hidden depression. Her discoveries are achingly true: one being that even those who've sought therapy don't report suicidal thoughts – due to fear, stigma, or their own denial that's being pressured day in and day out by intrusive thoughts of dying that can invade even the most “perfect” seeming of lives. Please listen – but listen with care. I am honored to be her friend and greatly respect what she's done and is doing about Jay's death and how it occurred. Jennifer Marshall – The Truman Charities Podcast: A Community of Caring with Jamie Truman Episode 019 Jennifer Marshall. Jennifer Marshall was diagnosed with Type 1 Bipolar Disorder in 2006 at the age of 26. She's had four hospitalizations within five years – two in 2005 before any diagnosis was reached, and two more because she was trying to protect her newborn son (postpartum psychosis) in 2008 and her unborn daughter in 2010 – and all were because she was unmedicated at the time. Writing her way through life with a mental illness became her way of healing, and her award-winning blog BipolarMomLife became an inspiration to many. Jenn created This Is My Brave because she learned firsthand how powerful and therapeutic it was to live openly and not hide her diagnosis. She wanted to give brave individuals from the community a platform through which to creatively share their stories of living with mental illness to educate and inspire others. She lives outside Washington, DC with her husband and two children. “Storytelling is the water of human communication…”(Bayer & Hettinger, 2019, p. 4) “Neither revolution nor reformation can ultimately change a society, rather you must tell a more powerful tale, one so persuasive that it sweeps away the old myths and becomes the preferred story…”~Ivan Illich Our individual narratives are “building blocks” for our collectively shared representations of the past and our projections for the future. When our stories collide and reconcile with one another on an interpersonal level, they start to illuminate the nuances of underlying themes and concerns, especially among marginalized groups like those impacted by mental health conditions, suicide loss and suicidal intensity.“Even though storytelling is a traditional means of delivering knowledge, wisdom and culture, it has a central role in social movements because it constructs agency, shapes identity and motivates action.” (p. 2, Prasetyo, 2017).This Is My Brave Logo.pngCommunity activism is built on a cycle of trust, undergirded by stories. Synergy is achieved by weaving together purpose-driven and authentic voices that together represent a community as a whole. When the collection of stories is shared publicly, the advocates have an easier time enrolling others into the movement. When people listen to stories, communities are formed and pull together. Shared experiences become a profound source of validation and consolidation of learning. We are co-constructed by relationships in the community and the stories that arise as a result. It is no wonder, then, that a number of collective storytelling initiatives about suicide prevention and mental health promotion have emerged, including “This is My Brave.” In this interview I interview Jennifer Marshall, founder of this nonprofit storytelling organization.About Jennifer MarshallJennifer Marshall headshot B&W.pngJennifer Marshall is the co-Founder/Executive Director of This Is My Brave, Inc., the nonprofit platform for individuals to share their story of overcoming mental illness through creative expression. She began writing online in 2012, and was just narcissistic enough to believe that she might have something fresh or funny to say about what she'd learned.   Since that time, she has launched three different versions of her website. She begun a podcast called SelfWork with Dr. Margaret Rutherford. She created monthly FaceBook Lives for The Mighty. And now she is excited to announce that her book, entitled "Perfectly Hidden Depression: How to Break Free from the Perfectionism that Masks Your Depression", was released in November of 2019.   Dr. Margaret Rutherford been researching and writing on this topic of hidden depression for five years, and she is passionate about the message that although depression can be heavily masked by perfectionism, it’s damage can still be devastating to that someone who’s trying so hard to smile their way through growing loneliness and despair.Along the way, she met many authors, researchers, bloggers, and psychologists. She  has written for HuffPost, The Mighty, Psych Central, The Gottman Blog, Psychologies, StigmaFighters, The Good Men Project, This Is My Brave, and others as she has spread a passionate message about becoming more comfortable with vulnerability in every day life, and confronting the prejudice against not only mental illness itself, but its treatment.   In this episode of Cool Things Entrepreneurs Do, Margaret Rutherford tells here story of starting her career as singer, and her transition to helping people with their mental health issues (I am sure as a singer she had the same impact for many!). The interview will explore the mental health issues for entrepreneurs, and others.    Thom was excited to interview her, as they met online four years ago when he was dealing with some issues and ran across some of her online articles.  She was writing "Perfectly Hidden Depression" at the time they met, and her concepts for the book resonated with him and helped him see his own areas to work on in his life.   https://thomsinger.com/perfectly-hidden-depression

I released my first poetry book A Little More Time in December of 2015. This was only a few months after I took the stage to share my poetry for the first time with an organization called This Is My Brave. Before this I was deathly afraid to share my work. When I was struggling with bipolar 1 and depression I felt that my books had been used against me. There were only a few times in my life that I felt comfortable enough to share my journals with anyone. Those few times ended up in break-ups and long stays in psychiatric hospitals. I guess I never realized that my perception of all that I deemed wrong in the world seemed so far fetched? I guess I never realized that my fears would turn into paranoia which was perceived by society as psychotic? I guess I should’ve known, but I didn’t. It’s all well and good that others wanted me to get help and relief of these symptoms and persistent thoughts. The problem was that after my hospitalizations I was told by many not to write. I was told that it was not healthy for me. I was told that writing was the problem. This always left me feeling riddled with guilt and shame because I was writing how I felt. So basically when I was being told not to write, I was being told not to feel. The doctors told me not to feel. The meds made me not feel. And now those closest to me were encouraging me not to feel. There was never a more empty period of my life. A Little More Time opened up the door for me to feel again. I thought that after I wrote it I would be done. I mean how many more books could I write? 1 seemed fine. This lasted about 3 weeks and then the flood came which I titled “Letters to the Universe; Letters to Myself. Envision a 4 month daydream in which you begin to make peace with the Universe and then realize that the whole time you were really just making peace with yourself. I hope you enjoy these selections. Today’s podcast is among our favorites! We interview Joseph Fusaro for a genuine and transparent discussion on isolation. Often times, when we struggle with mental health issues, we tend to withdraw from friends and loved ones...at the very moment we need them most. Joe’s journey is real, gritty, complex and ultimately, inspiring. Joe describes the dark spiral his life took as a college student with undiagnosed schizoaffective, bipolar, general anxiety disorder, chemical dependence, depression, insomnia and agoraphobia that sent him to several psychiatric hospitalizations. After several years of loneliness and self imposed isolation, Joe ultimately found a path to healing and in the process, mended relationships with those who welcomed him back with open arms. Joe is an editor with the Mental Health News Radio Network and host of Hysteria Radio, a podcast and internet radio show that focuses on writing, music, expressive arts, and all things related to self-care and recovery from or management of a mental health condition. Joe has published 6 poetry books and a short guide featuring the changes he made to start feeling alive again after living his teen years and 20’s with serious mental illness. He is also a professional speaker and works with NAMI, This Is My Brave, Project 375, and Deconstructing Stigma.

Jennifer Marshall used to spend her days as an agency recruiter for creatives. Her story took a dramatic turn when she experienced a manic episode. Over 12 years ago she suffered two manic episodes. After a series of doctor’s appointments she was officially diagnosed Bipolar Disorder – type 1. She is now a wife and mother of two young children, whom she loves dearly. She began blogging on Bipolar Mom Life, telling her story about being a mother with Bipolar Disorder. She was hospitalized four times within five years – two before her diagnosis was reached, and two more because she was attempting to shield her infant son (during postpartum psychosis) and her unborn daughter – and all were due to the fact that she was unmedicated at the time. Jennifer has grown after being diagnosed and learning to live with Bipolar Disorder. She has worked hard to find the right medications and a great therapist. She now strives to help others live with mental illness through her nonprofit organization, This Is My Brave, a platform where people share their stories live on stage through poetry, original music, comedy, and essay. The performances are professionally videotaped and are available for viewing on the This Is My Brave YouTube Channel. To date, This is My Brave has produced 34 unique shows across the US. The show has recently expanded internationally with two shows in Australia!
