Several years ago, while working at The Christian Broadcasting Network as a features producer, I had the opportunity to produce a few stories about human trafficking in Southeast Asia with my now friend, David Zach. David is the front man of a band called @remedydrive and works with an organization called @TheExodusRoad , going under cover to look for evidence of human trafficking and work with local law enforcement to bring bad guys to justice and free these young women. I was even able to even go undercover with David as part of my reporting. It was an amazing but also very sad experience and in changed me forever. In this episode we discuss the music industry and his work in fighting human trafficking and what we can do to join the fight to push back the darkness. Enjoy.

Remedy Drive isn't just your average rock band, their music is interwoven with real stories of the international sex trade. Band front-man and lyricist David Zach speaks of the band's origins and how his passion was fanned into flame by the actions of other heroes from the abolitionist movement - leading him to assist in undercover sex trafficking stings with The Exodus Road and write lyrics that that inspire the fight against sex trafficking. David challenges each person to find out how to make trafficking dangerous, as each of us are made in the image of love and burdened with glorious purpose. This will take on a bit of a confessional tone. A few years ago, Dr. Christena Cleveland talked on my podcast about the need for black leaders to steer away from trying to influence white spaces so often. The effort, she clarified, to change white minds about whiteness, should be executed by white hands. Not because of a hatred or distain among black leaders for the people in white-centered cultures, but as a matter of workload, exhaustion and, in a sense, effectiveness. The translation and code switching needed in order to establish not just trust but a baseline of knowledge just wasn't worth it for a lot of black leaders, who could be spending their time organizing and inspiring in black spaces where agreements about life experience are already made. For example, more often than not, a room of non-white persons doesn't need convincing that the black experience of the legal system is profoundly different than it is for white persons. As she is so keen at doing, Dr. Cleveland delivered that truth with a fair mix between “stay in your lane” and “know your power.” And that's a very important distinction for me to make. Absolutely, I have needed to learn how to stay in my lane. I have a tendency to overreach because I want to do so much. That can lead to not just taking on more than I can handle well but even taking on roles FAR better filled by other people with different training, history and socio-cultural positioning. Meanwhile, i'm functionally stealing energy from efforts I can be making in roles more my cup of tea; places I can have a more lasting and deeper impact. I don't think I can be a leader among people of color in religious spaces. But I can witness their courage and work and can translate those efforts and victories for folks more like me. I don't think will be a leader among those building faith communities in the next season of Western religious life. But I can coach and champion and motivate and help those who are. That old author's dilemma of knowing your audience translates into a lot of life, including areas of leadership. And just as it can be true of authors, so it is for leaders, that learning where and with whom your work really lands can be as surprising as it is freeing. For both my recent guests, Alan Smyth and David Zach, their entrance into the fight against human slavery has meant learning which parts of that enormous, messy and interconnected world they are most effective in. For both, they've recognized that moving the hearts and minds of folks more like themselves is an area of power for them. Alan, a long-time leader of men, wrote a book on the connection between manhood and the vulnerability of children. A long time musician, David Zach career behind the mic of a band making music for the religiously inclined has meant taking stories from some very dark corners of the world into places that would never otherwise hear them. There are victories I thought I'd have at this point in my life and goals I thought I'd have achieved that I simply had to let go of because they don't fall within the wise and loving parameters of my limited life. Meanwhile, within those limits, there are depths of connection and difference I didn't know were available to me until I traded in breadth of influence for that depth. It's a trade I'm happy to have made.
“If you really wanted to help, you'd up and move to Africa.”It was a few minutes after I'd just spoken at a college chapel and a particularly fired-up student was trying to convince his classmates to resist child sponsorship in favor of a more radical and, in his mind, more holistic response to the problem of extreme poverty. His suggestion that a serious person would uproot their entire lives in response to the information they'd just been handed is as dramatic as it is… problematic. See, aside from the white-savior complex that response borrows from, it also ignores an often overlooked opportunity the privileged have, because of our privilege; access to the hearts and minds of other, privileged people. Because, somewhere in the mix, that student was right that there is a link between the way people like me live and the tragic circumstances in which far too many other people live; that I should change the way I live if I'm serious about changing things for folks in extreme poverty. But/and… one of the opportunities I am afforded because of my position is to change and grow in a way that inspires and informs and even leads other people in my same position. And that's not sexy work to do. In fact, it can look suspiciously like compromise and slowness. (sometimes it is)This is why we like to tell the stories of the families who sold everything and left for Fallujah without a plan. I thank God for those stories. They're just not mine. That's not David Zach's story, either. David, like I did, ran headlong into stories about human trafficking along the way he was already traveling. And the decisions he'd made about how he could respond, as a person of privilege, to leverage that privilege and power are truly powerful. I was thrilled to talk with him about his history and his work. Check it out.
There are few things more grotesque and evil than the exploitation of women and children for sexual gain. Sadly, there's an entire industry devoted to it, fueled by the insatiable sexual appetites of men around the world. David Zach, the lead singer/songwriter for the band Remedy Drive, joins the show to talk about his role with The Exodus Road, a counter-trafficking organization committed to cracking down on the criminal networks responsible for trafficking women and teenagers around the world. This is a problem created by men, and it will require good men like David Zach to step up and take action if we hope to bring it to an end. Believe it or not, human sex trafficking and modern day slavery are still a huge market in the world. With the advent of Qanon, many have taken a skeptical approach to this topic and refuse to give credibility to its legitimacy. But whilst it may detract from the truth, the reality is that 40.3 million people trapped in modern day slavery, contributing to the $150 BILLION criminal industry of human trafficking. Of these, 75% are female and 25% are male.Enter Exodus Road. David Zach joins us to discuss how Exodus Road uses modern technology to help police, free survivors, arrest traffickers. Something was gnawing at David Zach. For years he had been performing with his band Remedy Drive, singing and telling people about hope and faith. But when he read scripture, especially the prophets, he felt challenged. He sensed a call to do more on behalf of the poor and the oppressed. That call led this lead-singer of a rock n'roll band to risk his life, working undercover with The Exodus Road to help rescue prisoners of sex trafficking.
David Zach of Remedy Drive, is a man on a mission to help those whose spirits and lives are being crushed by human trafficking. David returns to The Antidote to speak about Imago Amor, the final installment of Remedy's Drive album trilogy which amplifies the voices of the downtrodden.

David Zach, professional musician and song-writer (his music is heard throughout this episode), works for a non-profit, The Exodus Road, who are on the front lines of the fight to end human trafficking. There's currently 40 million people, some still infants, who are enslaved and David has drank, smoked, laughed, and talked music with traffickers only to see them arrested the next day. His reaction to seeing them brought to justice may surprise you. Rollercoaster of an emotional episode, we discuss the accessibility of websites that give American "consumers" instructions on how and who to make the connections with, in order to have sex with kids overseas. We compare modern-day slavery to the transatlantic slavery of the 16th to 19th centuries. We grapple with humanizing the Apostle Paul, Thomas Jefferson and the very traffickers David has spent time with, despite their views, and/or practices in enslaving fellow humans. We marvel at the bravery he's observed in the very teen girls who are stuck in sex trafficking and learn how we can all be a part of opposing this dark and rampant, evil side of humanity. Successful rock band and lead singer David Zach of Remedy Road sings about the horrors of human trafficking. However he doesn’t just sing about it, he travels with a project called “Exodus Road” to other countries taking great risk to gather intelligence about human trafficking networks so that authorities can investigate and convict human traffickers. The work of Exodus Road has led to the freedom of over 1,500 people and the arrest of 800 traffickers receiving a combined 400 years in prison for their crimes.
David Zach, best known as vocalist for Remedy Drive, drops by to talk about the band's new record Imago Amor and give insight as to his work with Exodus Road, an organization fighting human trafficking. We get into the album's inspiration as well as his undercover work. @remedydrive @davidmzach Visit RemedyDrive.com for more info on Imago Amor and Exodus Road.
David Zach is an abolitionist in a rock and roll band. He has traveled all over the world, going undercover to help rescue girls from slavery and sex trafficking. It’s a wild story. But 9-to-5, David is the frontman for the band, Remedy Drive. The band started as four brothers and we got to talk about how they had to quit being in a band together to be good brothers. It is also a pretty wild story. Maybe not quite as wild as going undercover in a Thailand nightclub. It was really fascinating to learn about the work David and the organization he’s a part of, Exodus Road, are doing in some of the most dangerous places on Earth. David Zach is the lead singer and songwriter for the rock band Remedy Drive as well as an advocate in the fight against human trafficking. The band has recorded two concept albums to shine a light on slavery and to celebrate the modern day abolition. The band's community and fan base has contributed around $350,000 in donations and in-kind donations to the counter trafficking organization The Exodus Road. When the band is not on tour David volunteers with The Exodus Road as an undercover operative. He spends time in brothels and in the red-light districts where underage girls and boys are sold by the hour. His role while undercover is to identify instances of minors being sold, and to capture actionable evidence of their trafficking using covert gear, some of which is funded by the Remedy Drive community and fan base. Upon returning from deployment overseas David uses the band and his platform to advocate for the victims of human trafficking, to shine a light on slavery and to speak about his time overseas with the goal of recruiting and funding the fight which is the modern underground railroad. He has spoken at many of the major festivals during talkback sessions, main stages and seminar tents. He also speaks at colleges, conferences, high school campuses and churches. David's message centers upon a core belief of both Remedy Drive and The Exodus Road - "Justice is in the hands of the ordinary". https://entrearchitect.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/small3262.jpg () Presentation Skills for Architects Leadership is about visions and ideas and being able to clearly communicate that knowledge to an audience. This week on the EntreArchitect Podcast, I welcome back futurist and professional speaker David Zach and we talk about How to Successfully Prepare and Present Your Ideas as an Architect. What steps can you take when preparing for a presentation? Design the presentation of information in a way that will meet your audience where they are. Confirm that the technology works beforehand; do a run-through with the audio/visual team! Look at all the angles of what could go wrong and have backups of your presentation and printed documents. Do your due diligence on the audience to whom you're presenting; ask two questions, What gets your people up early in the morning because they're excited?, and, What keeps your people up late at night because they're worried? Know your subject to give yourself flexibility to adjust the presentation to give the same idea from a different perspective if needed. Be interested and be interesting. Connect people, things, and ideas that you didn't think were connectable. What are some critical elements of a successful presentation? Learn to think on your feet. Show up fully prepared to be nowhere else; give your client your fullest attention. Ask specific questions to draw the client out. Try to be good and unique, don't try to be perfect. What to wear? Know your audience and don't over or underdress. Dress for the comfort of your audience. Put enough attention into what you wear, but not too much attention. What tips do you have for telling a good story? Mind Mapping: Map out a presentation with a cluster of ideas branched together. Cigar of the Week -Emilio AF-2 Robusto The AF2 blend, produced and blended by A.J. Fernandez is crafted from rich Nicaraguan fillers combined with the strength of Pennsylvania ligero and a beautiful Ecuadoran Habano Oscuro wrapper. These cigars are available in cabinet boxes of 20 in four sizes: Robusto, Toro, Torpedo, and BMF. What else have you been smokin' Dale? Rocky Patel Burn Special Reserve Robusto - 5” x 50 - First released in late Feb., the Burn by RP was developed for sale in all RP Lounges and is made at the Tobacalera Villa Cuba factory. Named for the Burn by Rocky Patel Lounges & dressed with two bands, the cigar is as attractive as it is delicious. A darkly fermented Ecuadorian grown Sumatra wrapper covers fillers & binder from Nicaragua. A rumor, as yet unconfirmed by this reporter yet from a good source, says that Dion Giolito helped with the blending of the cigar. It also comes in Toro (6” x 52) and a Titan (8.5” x 60) sizes. Lots of earthy, dark & rich flavors with more sweetness than one might expect. I found cocoa, cedar, molasses, stewed plums and nutmeg spice. Full bodied, full flavored and very well balanced. A luxurious cigar! Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 - What a disappointment after smoking the Burn a few days earlier! Not a bad cigar, but certainly not up to the high premium level of the Burn, in all categories. Construction was weak, as there was an underfilled portion about 2” in causing the cigar to tunnel. Flavors were OK, but not nearly as well balanced. The pepper was good, but far too strong over the core of leather, and masked most other minor flavors. The tobaccos didn’t seem nearly as well fermented. The cigar burned fast and tended to go out often. Macanudo Cru Royale Robusto - In our What Else segment last week, Jerry Cruz talked about how the new Partagas 1845 was a hit, where as the more recent Macanudo offerings didn’t hit the mark. I wanted to go back and compare, so I smoked the Cru Royale this week again after having not smoked it for several months. What else have you been smokin' Bob? Man O War Armada - $500 for a box of cigars, even a box of 32 cigars, is beyond most people's reach, including mine. Can a cigar really be worth $20? No, but the cigar and its accompanying box can be according to Man O’ War maker A.J. Fernandez and the pricing on the Armada. In the finest tradition of Gurhka, AJ has produced a cigar that, while providing artistic packaging and exceptional flavors, is just not practical for most cigar smokers. This cigar is a tasty elixir draped in a dark, toothy, Ecuador-Sumatra wrapper leaf that brings a full-frontal assault of flavor. Would I recommend them? - Yes. Would I buy them? - No. Emilio Cigars Grimalkin - Grimalkin is a unique blend, produced in Esteli, Nicaragua from carefully selected tobaccos. This cigar will be limited in quantity based on harvest conditions. Grimalkin cigars are available in 3 sizes: Robusto, Toro, and Torpedo, and come in cabinet style boxes of 25. Medium bodied and complex, Grimalkin is a complex cigar with several nuance flavors. It took me smoking a couple of them to really get the point but once I did I fell in love with them. Notes of pepper, raisins and a citrus sweetness combined with the texture of the smoke (not chewy but textured like work leather) make this an outstanding cigar in the true tradition of boutique cigars. What's my band? Thank you to Dan Crouch for providing this week's unbanded cigar, the Gran Habano Blue Label. Do you have a suggestion for the unbanded cigar of the week? Every week Bob and Dale include an “unbanded cigar” segment in their show in which they smoke a cigar without any markings and give their honest opinions. Bob then opens a sealed envelope and discovers the cigar’s name and manufacturer. If you have suggestions for the "What's My Band?" segment, or would like to provide 2-4 What's my Band? cigars, please email Executive Producer Liz at liz@cigarmedia.tv. Anyone providing samples will receive a DogWatch Cigar Radio pin and sticker! Do you have a Cigar Review or a comment about the show? If you call and leave a cigar review or comment on the herfline and it is played on the show, you will receive a DogWatch Cigar Radio pin and sticker! You can reach the Herfline at 321-594-4373 - or cigar.radio on Skype. You can also send email to theshow@cigarmedia.tv. Music provided by The Surfonics.
