Tim Ozgener is the new CEO, and longtime partner Jon Huber is the company President. Huber remains the creative force of Crowned Heads, and he spearheaded one of Crowned Heads' most significant endeavors to date - the portfolio rebranding. 2022 Cigar of the Year Countdown (Coop's List): #3: Tatuaje T110 Reserva

Cigar Coop Prime Time Show

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 7, 2023 6:07

Coming in at #3 is the Tatuaje T110 Reserva. Back in 2009, Tatuaje Cigars released a powerhouse of a Petit Robusto cigar known as the Tatuaje T110 (which is believed to mean Thermonuclear 110 with 110 being the approximate length of the cigar in mm). It was a shop exclusive to a retailer in Hawaii.  Known for its high priming blend, the cigar achieved incredible cult status. Eventually, in 2011, Tatuaje Cigars' owner Pete Johnson would create a regular production blend based on it known as Fausto. The Tatuaje Fausto has certainly had its share of success, but the T110 blend still maintained a legendary status despite not having been released in many years. All of that would change in 2021 when Pete Johnson not only would bring back the original Tatuaje T110, but introduced several offshoot blends (all on a national basis) – the Tatuaje T110 Capa Especial and the Tatuaje T110 Reserva in 2021 and the T110 Tuxla in 2022. Today we take a look at the Tatuaje T110 Reserva. While the original Tatuaje T110 blend consisted of an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper, the T110 Reserva uses Connecticut Broadleaf. The remainder of the blend features all Nicaraguan tobaccos. As mentioned the T110 is a Petit Robusto and it measures 4 3/8 x 52. Production comes from the My Father Cigars factory in Estelí, Nicaragua. This recent wave of T110 releases was a limited production and it's unclear when we will see these again. The Tatuaje T110 Reserva delivered notes of coffee, chocolate, earth, wood, citrus, herb, and mixed pepper. While flavors such as coffee, chocolate, and pepper are known to Broadleaf, there were some intangibles that gave this cigar a unique flavor profile. In terms of the boldness level, the T110 Reserva is not overwhelming. It starts out medium strength before progressing to medium to full strength. At the same time, the flavors were on the upper end of medium to full-bodied. Some aging seemed to dial the boldness back on this cigar, but not at the expense of the flavors delivered. This is the second cigar from Tatuaje to land on the 2022 Countdown.  Tatuaje has had a very successful run over the years on the Countdown. This is not only the seventh year a Tatuaje has placed on the Countdown, but this is the fifth top ten, and fourth podium (aka Top 3) spot. Finally, this is the third cigar on the 2022 Countdown to come from the My Father factory. Nicaragua continues to dominate the Countdown. Of the 28 cigars that have been unveiled, 19 have come from that Central American country. Full Report: https://wp.me/p6h1n1-ord

Coming in at #10 is the Mi Querida Triqui Traca No. 448 by Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust. The story of the Mi Querida Triqui Traca can be traced back to a cigar known as the Mi Querida Firecracker. This is a project that Steve Sakadid for New Hampshire-based retailer Two Guys Smoke Shop in 2018. The Mi Querida Firecracker was a 3 1/2 x 50 size featuring a long fuse much like a Firecracker. For that project, Saka released the Mi Querida Firecracker using an alternative blend that was stronger than the Mi Querida that was out at the time, the Mi Querida Blue. With Mi Querida Trique Traca (which is a name that refers to a large firecracker almost resembling a stick of dynamite), Saka worked with that alternate blend and tweaked it to be released in other sizes (minus the long fuse). One of those sizes that were added was a 4 x 48 vitola that was released in 2021. Like the original Mi Querida Blue, the Triqui Traca makes use of a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper. The remainder of the blend consists Nicaraguan binder and a combination of Nicaraguan and Dominican fillers. There are two notable differentiators with the Triqui Tracker when compared to the  Blue. First, the wrapper of Triqui Traca was switched from the traditional Connecticut Broadleaf Mediums to the rarer No. 1 Dark corona leaves. Second, the filler incorporates what is described as a “high octane ligero” from the Dominican Republic. Production comes from the NACSA factory. The 4 x 48 size is one that has brought Saka success on the Cigar Coop Countdown in the past. In 2018, the Mi Querida Gordita in the Blue Blend finished as #7 Cigar of the Year. Incidentally, this isn't the first time Triqui Traca has landed on the Countdown. In 2020, the 552 size finished at #16. The Mi Querida Triqui Traca 448 delivered a mix of mixed pepper, cocoa, blackberry, and earth. The cigar came in at medium to full strength and medium to full body. As I stated when I assessed this cigar, this small little size was loaded with flavor and it delivers plenty of boldness. The Mi Querida Triqui Traca 448 lands Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust on a Cigar Coop Countdown for an eighth consecutive year. If you have been keeping score at home Nicaragua has been dominating the 2022 Countdown. Of the 21 cigars unveiled thus far, the Mi Querida Triqui Traca 448 is the 15th to come out of Nicaragua. In 2021, Tatuaje Cigars released a sampler of all of the blends in the Monster Series known as the Monster Mash. The Monster Mash would differ from the original Monster Series in that each of the cigars would be 1 1/2 inches shorter than the original Monster Series. One of the cigars is the Frank, a cigar that pays homage to the character of Frankenstein. It also was the first Monsters cigar ever released. It's the Monster Mash expression of the Tatuaje Frank that lands on the 2022 Countdown. The Monster Mash Frank uses the same tobacco components as the original Tatuaje The Frank blend. This consists of a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper over all Nicaraguan fillers. Like the original Frank, the Monster Mash Frank is a box-pressed vitola, but it is shorter at 6 1/8 x 49. The Monster Mash Frank delivered notes of espresso, earth, cocoa powder, cedar, wood, and pepper. Throughout the smoking experience of the Tatuaje Monster Mash Frank, the flavors were medium to full-bodied countered by medium to full strength. One cigar wrapper that Tatuaje Cigars' owner Pete Johnson is known for is Connecticut Broadleaf and the Monster Mash Frank is a wonderful expression of a blend using that wrapper. The Monster Mash Frank marks the seventh year Tatuaje has landed on a Cigar Coop Countdown. Coming in at #21 is The American Double Robusto by J.C. Newman Cigar Company. At the end of 2020, Cigar Coop named the Toro size of The American as our #1 Cigar of the Year. It's a unique project from J.C. Newman Cigar Company that pays homage to cigar making in the United States. The blend is made in the U.S. featuring 100% American-grown tobacco. In addition, everything about the cigar is American-made, including the boxes, the box hinges, the labels, and even the molds. The Double Robusto size was introduced in 2021, and it's a tweaked and bolder version of the original blend. The American Double Robusto uses a wrapper grown in Florida by Jeff Borysiewicz at his farm in Clearmont, Florida. The remainder of the blend consists of a Connecticut Broadleaf binder and fillers consisting of Pennsylvania and Connecticut Habano tobaccos. The American Double Robusto uses the same tobacco components as the original line, the one major difference is that there is an extra leaf of  Pennsylvania ligero that is included in the blend. The Double Robusto measures 5 1/2 x 56, making it the thickest offering in The American line to date. Production comes from J.C. Newman's El Reloj factory in Ybor City. The American Double Robusto delivers a complex smoke consisting of wood, earth, mixed fruit, citrus, black pepper, graham cracker, and metallic notes. While I would categorize it as medium in strength and body, it's still got more in the way of boldness compared to the rest of the line. For J.C. Newman, this marks the third year it has landed a cigar on the Cigar Coop Countdown, and it's the second cigar for The American line to place on a Countdown. This cigar also is the first cigar from the U.S. to land on the 2022 Countdown. Full Report: https://wp.me/p6h1n1-ojC

Coming in at #2 is the ADVentura The Royal Return – Queen's Pearls Corona. ADVentura Cigars, the flagship brand of ADV & McKay Cigars Co, is a joint venture owned by Henderson Ventura and Marcel Knobel. Henderson Ventura is best known for running the Tabacalera William Ventura factory. A few years ago, he teamed with Knobel to launch ADVentura Cigars. The brand's theme is The Age of Exploration. In 2020, they released a two-blend series under the name The Royal Return. One was a Connecticut Broadleaf known as King's Gold and one was a Connecticut Shade offering called Queen's Pearls. Both were highly rated blends on Cigar Coop, but it was the Queen's Pearls Corona that really shone. The Royal Return – Queen's Pearls Corona is an Ecuadorian forward blend. It not only features an Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper, it also has an Ecuadorian binder and Ecuadorian tobaccos in the filler. The filler also incorporates Dominican and Nicaraguan tobaccos. According to ADVentura Cigars, the tobaccos used have five years of age, and the rolled cigars have been aging for four months. ADVentura says the tobaccos go through a special fermentation process to give them a lighter profile. The Corona is a 44 x 6 size and production comes from Tabacalera William Ventura in the Dominican Republic. The Queen's Pearl Corona delivered notes of vanilla, cream, citrus, toast, natural tobacco, cedar, and black pepper. This cigar definitely has a light profile. The cigar started out mild to medium in body before going to medium in the second half. At the same time, strength-wise the Queens Pearl Corona held mild to medium from start to finish. In the end, this is a wonderful classic old-school Connecticut and was easily the top Connecticut Shade cigar assessed on Cigar Coop over the past year. The Queens Pearl Corona lands ADVentura Cigars on the Countdown for the first time in a big way. It's also the third cigar from the Dominican Republic to land on the 2021 Countdown. Coming in at #14 is the Liga Privada Unico Serie Bauhaus by Drew Estate. Late in 2020, Drew Estate would introduce the fourteenth installment of its Liga Privada Unico Serie line known as Bauhaus. The Liga Privada Unico Serie is a series of cigars that feature a unique blend in a single size. What was different about the Bauhaus is that it would be a regional release that would be exclusive to the European market. It's the highest placing non-U.S. release to ever land on a Countdown. On paper, when you look at things tobacco-wise, the profile of the Liga Privada Unico Serie Bauhaus looks similar to the Liga Privada No. 9. This consists of a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper, a Brazilian binder, and a combination of Honduran and Nicaraguan tobaccos. Production of the Bauhaus comes from Drew Estate's La Gran Fabrica in Estelí, Nicaragua. The Short Robusto measures 114mm x 50 - which translates to 4 1/2 inches x 50. The flavors produced by the Liga Privada Unico Serie Bauhaus include chocolate, earth, baker's spice, mixed pepper, and what I consider the cigar's signature note - anise. These flavors open up medium-bodied in the first half before progressing to medium to full in the second half. This is countered by medium strength. The Bauhaus gives Drew Estate two consecutive cigars in a row on the 2021 Countdown. If you have been following the Countdown thus far, Drew Estate joins Joya de Nicaragua as companies that have two entries on the Countdown. It has given La Gran Fabrica Drew Estate the third cigar on the Countdown this year. If you have been keeping score at home, this is the eighth year Drew Estate has landed on the Countdown, including the past four years in a row. Meanwhile, Nicaragua continues to dominate the 2021 Countdown. Of the sixteen cigars we have unveiled moving up the Countdown, this is the twelvth one from Nicaragua. Today we're doing something a little different and a whole lot crazy. Today we're doing the first-ever Cigar Battle here on CigarScore, and we're pairing two great cigars together to see which one wins. The contenders are two cigars made exclusively for Stogies World Class Cigars in Houston, Texas. See, the team at Stogies has an affinity for lanceros, so they tasked major cigar brands to make a cigar just for their South-Texas customers. And today we have two of those choice offerings, one from Tatuaje and one from RoMa Craft.Officially, their names are the and the H-Town Tatuaje Exclusive Series Lancero and the H-Town RoMa Craft Neanderthal OM Lancero, but we've shortened those names below and in the video.According to Stogies, the RoMa Craft lancero:"originates in Nicaragua. The strength is best described as Full with a standard shape of Lancero. Binder is Connecticut Broadleaf and wrapper influence is San Andres. Filler comes from Dominican and Nicaragua"And the Tatuaje Lancero:"originates in Nicaragua. The strength is best described as Medium-Full with a standard shape of Lancero. Binder is Nicaraguan and wrapper influence is Ecuador Sumatra. Filler comes from Nicaragua."And both cigars are $10. Since these cigars are about as similar as they could possibly be, I thought they'd be the perfect cigars with which to launch the CigarScore Cigar Battle!Let's go!CigarScore Merch!: https://click.cigarscore.com/merchytUse coupon code  CIGARSCORETV  to get 15% OFF!Brand: TatuajeLine: H-Town Exclusive Series LanceroSize: 7 x 40Cut: GuillotineLight: TorchPrice: $10Wrapper: Ecuadorian SumatraBinder: NicaraguaFiller: Nicaragua-VS-Brand: RoMa CraftLine: H-Town Neanderthal OM LanceroSize: 7 x 38Cut: GuillotineLight: TorchPrice: $10Wrapper: Mexican San AndresBinder: United States Connecticut BroadleafFiller: Nicaragua, Dominican RepublicCigar Battle Winner:Tatuaje H-Town Exclusive Series LanceroFinal Thoughts:Wow, what an awesome Cigar Battle! The H-Town Tatuaje Exclusive Series Lancero and the H-Town RoMa Craft Neanderthal OM Lancero, both really went head to head and each really delivered. Both cigars had great and even burns. Both cigars had great draws. Both cigars were full-bodied and full-flavored.However, since this is a cigar battle, there can be only one winner. For me, that winner was the Tatuaje.Whereas the RoMa Craft (in typical RC fashion) was pedal-to-the-medal from the first puff, the Tatuaje seemed just a little more nuanced and complex. The Tatuaje was also just a smidge bigger and took about 10 minutes longer to smoke, so it might be a little more value for your money.Stogies in Houston: https://www.cigarscore.com/places/texas/houston/cigar-lounges/stogies-world-class-cigars-westheimer/Fine Ash Cigars in Arizona: https://www.cigarscore.com/places/arizona/glendale/cigar-lounges/fine-ash-cigars-bar-lounge/#CigarScoreTV:::::Find & Rate Where to Smoke Cigars at https://www.cigarscore.comCIGAR DEALS::::::Cigar 5-Packs: https://jo.my/mlunpiCigar 10-Packs: https://jo.my/8kfajfCigar Samplers: https://jo.my/oady8qBoveda Packs: https://jo.my/fbtwzr:::::Get CigarScore Emails - https://www.cigarscore.com/subscribe::::: SOCIAL MEDIA LINKS: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/cigarscoreTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/cigarscoreInstagram: https://Instagram.com/cigarscoreMy Music: https://www.ellorywells.com/soundstripe::::: AFFILIATE DISCLAIMER: Hey, so, some of the links in my videos and descriptions are affiliate links. They first gave us the revolutionary Casa Favilli - featuring a Nicaraguan-grown Connecticut Broadleaf. At the 2019 PCA (nee IPCPR) Trade Show, Sgroi announced the unprecedented collaboration with Diplomatico Rum, the infamous Venezuelan Spirit Company. Today I'm smoking the Charter Oak Maduro by Foundation Cigar Co. I'm enjoying the 6 x 52 toro. Can you get a good cigar under $10? Hear my thoughts in the video and leave your comments and what you think of this stogie in the comments below!Buy this cigar: https://famous-smoke.7eer.net/QENe6Initial Thoughts:When I first picked up the Charter Oak Maduro by Foundation Cigar Co., I noticed two things. First, I noticed the coarse Connecticut broadleaf wrapper. Second, I saw the un-cut foot, something I don't mind and something that often makes a cigar easier to light.Brand: Foundation Cigar Co.Line: Charter Oak MaduroSize: 6 x 52Cut: GuillotineLight: MatchesPrice: $5.69Final Thoughts:If you're looking for a decent, inexpensive, budget cigar, you're going to love the Charter Oak Maduro by Foundation Cigar Co. This cigar boasts an even burn, a rough-but-well-rolled Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper, and decent flavors. While the Charter Oak isn't as good of a cigar as Foundation's higher-end cigars, this particular stick is perfect for beginners, lawn mowers, and people who don't want to spend a lot of money. Because of the good build quality, satisfactory flavors, and rockstar price point, I give the Charter Oak Maduro a CigarScore of 3.Where I buy my cigars:https://click.cigarscore.com/famoussmokePremium Cigar Samplers: https://click.cigarscore.com/fs-premiumsamplers:::::Find & Rate Where to Smoke Cigars at https://www.cigarscore.com:::::Subscribe to my YouTube Channel! - http://links.ellorywells.com/subscribeonyoutube:::::Gear I Used or Mentioned in This Video (Amazon Affiliate Links):Main camera: https://www.ellorywells.com/yt-canon80dMy #1 favorite lens: https://www.ellorywells.com/yt-canon18125mmLapel mic: https://www.ellorywells.com/yt-movolv1Sturdy tripod: https://www.ellorywells.com/yt-tripodTravel camera: https://www.ellorywells.com/yt-canong7xii:::::SOCIAL MEDIA LINKS: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/cigarscoreTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/cigarscoreInstagram: https://Instagram.com/cigarscore:::::AFFILIATE DISCLAIMER: Hey, so, some of the links in my videos and descriptions are affiliate links. San Cristobal De La Habana La Punta - Still easily one of my too 3 cuban smokes, could be number one! Floral notes with wood flavors, so good they don't last long in my humidor. La Aurora Puro Vintage 2004 - Excellent smoke, perfect burn, draw, and construction, A+ smoking experience. Needs a little age, but awesome flavors (subtle spice with sweet tobacco) and great complexity Ramon Allones Specially Selected - I like this smoke, good cuban change of pace cigar for me, lots of earth, not your typical cuban flavor profile. Tatuaje Anarchy - The most bland Tatuaje ever, could not find much flavor, and what I did get was not very enjoyable Montecristo Edmundo - Nice light cedar flavor, this is my new morning smoke! Goes great with coffee and isn't a really heavy or strong cigar, but is filled with flavor. Punch Double Corona - Weird burn and draw, but still very enjoyable. Nice flavors throughout, a bit more bold in the flavor and strength department than several other similar cigars from Cuba. Partagas Serie D #4 - Still one of my favorite cuban cigars, like It far better than the RASS or Bolivar Petite Corona, tons of flavor and very complex. Paul Garmirian Reserva Exclusiva Corona - I like the panatella better, but thats like saying you like duck better than top sirloin. Outstanding flavors on this cigar, not a lot of change (if any), but a solid smoke. Illusione Singulare Phantom LE 2010 - Awesome smoke, my favorite Illusione. Such amazing flavors this cigar delivers, very enjoyable! Opus X Forbidden X Lancero 2009 - Lots of leather, touch of sweet flavor, snug draw. Just okay, not amazing. La Flor Dominicana El Jocko - Super old cigar, was still full bodied and had an awesome sweetness. This cigar was from 2003. Hoyo De Monterey Churchill - This was also a great stick, the flavors were not as well balances as some of the other Cubans I smoked, but still a solid smoke. These need lots of age, and are good when not aged, but really come to life after 4 years. Overall, very enjoyable, and box worthy. Tim's List Ortega Serie D No. 6 - This Corona from Eddie Ortega (formly of EO Brands Inc) features a Mexican San Andreas wrapper, and a binder/fillers from Esteli, Nicaragua. I paired a glass of Fonseca 10 year Old Tawny Port. Wow! What winning combination. The Ortega Serie D began with some cocoa and coffee notes and quickly transitioned to earth, leather, and pepper. I really enjoyed the smoke and will be picking up more of these soon. “Box Worthy”. La Aurora Puro Vintage 2004 - This was my disaapointment of the week. It is one sexy looking cigar. Unfortunately, it seemed to be a little under filled and consequently burned hot. I countered the effects by less frequent draws and was presented with a bread like flavor profile with the additional appearance of spice and burnt caramel that would take turns on my palate. The last third was a wash, as it became too hot to finish. Consequently, I am going to hold off on making an assessment until I can revisit. Tatuaje 109 Federal Cigar 90th Reserva - This cigar was a limited run created for Federal Cigar in New Hampshire last year. This 7 x 50 Nicaraguan cigar features a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper. An opening of cocoa quickly transitioned to bitter sweet chocolate, leather, and pepper. The pepper was subtle at first but increased in strength as the cigar progressed. Burn and draw were good. An interesting cigar but it did not “wow” me either. If you come across a few singles (they are sold out now) I would grab a couple to try. Romeo y Juiletta Short Churchill - Box date on these are June 2011. While not as smooth and tastey of the 2010's I recently reviewed here, still an enjoyable mild/medium body smoke. I cannot wait to smoke another! "Box Worthy" Gran Habano Corojo #5 Imperiales - A friend gifted me this 6 x 60 monster. I was working late Monday night from home, so I decided to fire this bad boy up. This stick features a Nicaraguan Corojo wrapper, Nicaraguan Habano binder, and Nicaraguan, Mexican, and Costa Rican fillers. The burn and draw were perfect and I would describe the strength and flavor as a solid medium. It was a good smoke but didn't change up much. Having smoked the Habano #3 in the past, I do find the darker flavors of that stick more to my liking. Still a solid smoke the money and I would recommend it to anyone who wants a medium strength smoke while they work arond the yard. "The Angler" Kristoff Kristania Toro - Released at IPCPR 2011, this Kristoff retails for less than $6.00 and offers some nice flavors including coffee and vanilla. Burn and draw were decent. For the money a definite smoke I could keep around for when I am fishing or grilling. "The Angler". Padilla Miami 8&9 Belicoso Finos - Wow what a great smoke. This Nicarguan Puro from 2008 was a gift from fellow BOTL, Will. Thank You, it has been a while since I had one of these! This blend was created by Don Pepin Garcia and this particular size was an exclusive to CI (2008-2009). "Box Worthy" Stogie Tech: Using Cigar Auction Sites How it works There are few auction sites on the Internet. The two that we have used most are CigarBid (From Cigars International) and Cigar Auctioneer (From Famous Smoke). Once you create an account you are able to place bids. When you create an account you give them a Credit Card number to keep on file. Then you choose when you want to have your cigars shipped, as they will ship once a week in a batch. For example, Cigar Auctioneer charges $5.99 flat rate shipping and ships to me every Wednesday. This means everything I bid on before Tuesday at midnight will be included in that shipment and usually arrives at my house on Friday. Its also important to get to know the different auction types and terminology: Lots - A "Lot" is an item or a group of items that has been posted for auction. For example, "Arturo Fuente Don Carlos Robusto". Note that a lot can contain one or more items. English Auctions - In an English Auction, a lot is offered for sale at a given starting price. Bidders bid the highest price they are willing to pay for that lot. At the closing of the auction the lot is sold to the highest bidder at their bid price. Yankee Auctions - A Yankee Auction is a variation of the Dutch Auction where one or more identical items are offered for sale at the same time. In cases where a lot contains multiple identical items, at the closing of the auction, the highest bidders win the merchandise at their bid price as opposed to paying the price determined by the lowest qualified bidder (as in a Dutch Auction). (NOTE: Auto-bidding is not available for a Yankee Auction) Free Fall Auction - Unlike other auctions where the price is driven up by bids, the Free Fall Price is driven down by us and you decide what you are willing to pay. Free Fall Auctions allow you to purchase an item at a discounted price, eliminating the bidding process. QuickBuy - QuickBuy allows you to purchase an item at a discounted price, eliminating the bidding process. CAUTION: Stay away from any auction site that charges you to bid, its pretty much a scam. Sure, you can bid $1.00 on a box and win, but everyone is paying for bids. So items that get a lot of bids make up for the box you got for a buck. Its just a scam, read about it in the forums for more information. MORE CAUTION - Take notice on bids where you are bidding on single cigars and multiples. For example, sometimes its not clear whether the price is for EACH cigar or the entire lot. You can get yourself into trouble if you start bidding $30 on 5 cigars, and thats the cost per cigar not for all 5. When you want to bid on cigars, here are some rules Rule 1: Decide the maximum price you are willing to pay before you bid - This is the most important rule. Ignore what anyone lists as the MSRP. When you find something you want to buy on auction, search around on the Internet and your local B&Ms and see who has the lowest price. Then, when you bid, make sure you are at least 10-20% below that price (Don't forget you have to pay shipping). Rule 2: Be mindful of the shipping cost and frequency - Sometimes I will bid on something and forget that I am outside my shipping window. So, I may have a box and 3 5-packs on the way, but the 3 cigars I just bid on won't come until next week. This is when I will bid on more stuff, just to offset the shipping. Rule 3: Set a reserve if you can - Reserves are great, and I love the English auctions. It really allows me to say "I would pay as much as $X for that", set my reserve, and forget about it. The cool part is sometimes you get it for the initial bid! Example, if I need to bid $100 on a box of cigars to be the highest bidder, but would pay $125, I set my reserve to $125. If I win the lot for $100, its a score! Rule 4: Use Favorites or Watchlists - This allows you to keep track of stuff you are interested in, which is nice. I will look at all of the stuff available on auction, and add the good stuff to my watch list for later. On Cigar Auctioneer you can look at future auctions too. Rule 4: Get a Larger Humidor - If you start getting good at this, you're going to need more space! I use a giant cooler with beads to store my overflow stuff. Who knows, you may be able to win a new humidor on auction cheap! Stuff I have won on Auction recently La Aurora Puro Vintage Salamone 2003 - 5-Pack $29.00 La Aurora Puro Vintage Salamone 2003 - 5-Pack - $41.00 - So I got 10 of these for $70, meaning $7.00 each. MSRP is $20.00 each, and CI is selling them for $16.95 each. Gurkha Cigarnivore No. V Sampler - 18 Cigars - $34.00 La Aurora Preferidos LE Lancero Cameroon (Single) - My Winning Quantity 5 of 7 - $7.00 Each Guillermo Leon Corona Gorda - 5 Pack - $19.00 Blazer CG-001 Cigar Lighter $30.00 Alec Bradley Black Market Robusto 5 Pack $22.00 Padron 3000 Box $112.00 La Riqueza No. 4 5 Pack $15.00 La Aurora Escogidos Robusto 3 @ $3.00/each

Cigar of the Week - Wicked Indie from The East India Trading Company line of The Gurkha Cigar Group The Wicked Indie blend is comprised of an oily Habano, Nicaraguan wrapper; a carefully selected Nicaraguan binder; and a rare, 3-year aged Nicaraguan filler. It will be available in 4 sizes with an MSRP ranging from $4.79 - $5.90. This cigar encompasses a rich and complex taste profile, full of sweet spice and nuttiness that evolves to a long and cool finish. 5 x 52 Robusto 6 x 54 Toro, 7 x 50 Churchill 6 x 60 XO What else have you been smokin' Dale? Punch Rare Corojo Magnum (5.25 x 54) and Punch Rare Corojo 10th Anniversary Robusto (5.0 x 50 - For those who want to taste the difference between wrappers, this comparison is a good one. Both of these cigars use the exact same filler (Dom, Hon & Nic) & binder (Connecticut Broadleaf). The original Rare Corojo is wrapped in a Sumatra leaf with a beautiful reddish color with lots of oiliness. The 10th Anny version uses a Connecticut leaf with a lighter reddish color that appears more delicate. I find the original to be a bolder cigar and a bit stronger then the 10th Anniversary. The original has more sweetness, the Anny has more floral notes. Both burn well, provide a lot of smoke and are med-full bodied. I like them both and seem to choose the original after dinner while the Anny fits me better in mid-day. What else have you been smokin' Craig? Cabaiguan Maduro - From a box I bought after returning from Esteli. These cigars are always evolving, never intimidating. Great ‘daily’ smoker, even if you smoke much less often then that. Padilla - 1932 - These 1932s were some of the best cigars ever produced by Jose Pepin Garcia, or sold by Ernesto Padilla. Now nearly 5 years old, they represent the quintessential mellowed Nicaraguan tobacco that when rolled was some of the highest quality coming out of Central America. Toasty, nutty, rich & savory. Truly a discontinued cigar to seek out. Bought from a vintage cigar retailer, these cigars are even a bargain at their $14/stick asking price today. Reynaldo 2010 - This custom Cuban cigar is rolled as a Petit Cimarones vitola (aprox 5”x58 figurado). Delivering cocoa & chocolate sweetness they demonstrate how Cuban tobacco can be molded to provide different flavor profiles than the typical Marques give you. A good cigar that really shined when it was even fresher. What else have you been smokin' Bob? ORTSAC Bulletproof 1962 Torpedo - Complex, full flavored and medium bodied. A very good smoke. What's My Band?- This week's unbanded, the Flor de Copan bundle cigar was suggested by Dan Crouch. Bob, who swears that he won't buy any cigar that starts with "Flor de" liked this cigar! Bob: A slight grassy sourness that I found very light on my palate. I genuinely enjoyed this cigar. Craig: 4-7/8”x44rg - I have $400 to spend on cigars left over from 2011 taxes & a year of penny pinching. After this cigar I am strongly considering sending it to DC to have him stock my humidor. Yet again he provides a delicious unbanded example. The initial light delivered strong woody flavors that were typical to Nicaraguan tobacco from the Jalapa region. 5 puffs later and the woodiness I tend to dislike transitioned beautifully into a lovely Nicaraguan sweetness. Like sugary orange juice concentrate, the flavor sticks to your palate & provides a tremendous finish that continues right until you take your next puff. I can type a few sentences and still taste the cigar. Epic. A bready, yeasty flavor jumps in there like a cranberry orange breakfast loaf. Do you have a suggestion for the unbanded cigar of the week? Every week Bob and Dale include an “unbanded cigar” segment in their show in which they smoke a cigar without any markings and give their honest opinions. Bob then opens a sealed envelope and discovers the cigar’s name and manufacturer. Every box ships with a Cigar Rights of America registration form. This week we are drinking Suntory Yamazaki 18 year old Japanese Single Malt Whiskey Paul's List Por Larranaga Monte Carlo - I re-visited this smoke as it was from a box purchase late last year. These are dated somewhere in 2011. This second one I smoked from the box was plugged, so I grabbed another which had a much better draw. The first third was awesome, a little cedar and hints of citrus/spice. The rest was sorta the same thing, and I got a little bored towards the end. San Cristobal de la Habana (2005) - This was my last one from 2005, and man was it good. All sorts of subtle sweet flavors that don't overwhelm your pallet, but compliment your drink and meal. Smokes so smooth and tasty. Interesting, I like the 2011 versions of this stick equally as much, just a different flavor profile. Its one of those sticks that just smokes different, not necessarily better and not worse, regardless of age. Its just different. Great smoking experience. Quesada Espana Robusto - I smoked this one after a nice Italian meal (Gnocchi, yum) while walking the streets of downtown San Francisco. It did the job, though I wish I could have sat in a lounge somewhere with a nice cocktail and smoked it. However, great sweet flavors shined through this cigar. It made me forget some of the "non-highlights" of my trip and focus on the positive. Sometimes all you need is a good cigar to remind you that, well, life is good. Arturo Fuente Hemmingway Best Seller Maduro - So I was talking about these on the last show and low and behold my good friend Jeff sent me some! I need to send Jeff back some nice cigars (expect something in the mail this coming week Jeff!). This is a 4 1/2 x 52 smoke, and I am assuming they are wrapped in a Connecticutt Broadleaf wrapper. Nice smooth flavors, great burn and construction. Not as good as a Short Story, but right up there if you are looking for something with a little more "cigar" than the short story, but not a cigar journey that goes along with an untold story or masterpiece. I find it better than the classic and signature maduros, though I ned to revisit. I'm not sure if its inconsistency in the blend, but every now and again I get a maduro wrapped hemming way that is bland and blah. This was not the case though, its an awesome smoke with a cocoa finish to die for that is box worthy. Tim's List La Gloria Cubana Reserva Figurados Flechas Especiales Maduro - This sexy perfecto had lots of rich, dark flavors including licorice, leather, and hickory. A slightly tight draw stopped it from becoming "Box Worthy" but enjoyable and worth a revisit. La Aurora Preferido Ruby - A+ construction and some good flavors but I found it lacked the complexity I would expect out of a cigar that retails for about $18.00 USD. Worth picking up at less than MSRP which can be done easily. Quesada Espania Robusto & Corona - Both Vitola's are great sticks. Robusto had a bit more strength so I would lean towards that later in the day, whereas the Corona was enjoyable in the AM with a cup of coffee. "Box Worthy" Viaje Super Shot 10 Gauge - A 3.5 x 54 nub with a lot of flavor and strength! Flavors including earth, leather, espresso, and pepper but boy did I get a nicotine buzz. I think Ben from NTA is correct, these have huge aging potential. a definite "Fiver" or two. Upcoming 2012 Releases We got a note from listener Sean requesting we talk about more upcoming releases. Since the Spring 2012 cigars have started to appear, what is everyone looking forward to? Viaje Friends and Family - Just released in very limited numbers. Many retailers only received one box of fifteen cigars. Not much is know about the blend but I can say it smells incredible. HalfWheel has a great review posted already and gave it a 92. Tatuaje Cojonu 2012 - This release will feature three different wrappers; Connecticut Broadleaf, Ecuador Sumatra, and Habano Ecuado. The Stogie Review has a nice overview of all three pre-releases here. All three of these sticks are expected to be available the end of this month. Avo Limited Edition 2012 86th Anniversary La Trompeta - The AVO 85th made it to both of our Top Ten of 2011 lists, with it coming in at number one on mine. I cannot wait to see how this release is smoking. The Cigar Coop has more information on the name and blend here. As in previous years, these will be available on Avo Uvezian's birthday which is March 22nd of this year. Tatuaje Little Monsters - Pete, I am not worthy! Tatuaje is going to re-release al previous Monster Series in smaller vitola's? I think I need a tissue and it's not because I am crying! HalfWheel posted details this week on the sizes of each vitola and pricing of 10 count sampler here. These are expecting to land in June 2012 so keep an eye out! The most comprehensive list new releases I know of is on HalfWheel. While not always up to date, it is a great resource I often use when planning on where I intend to spend my cigar budget in the upcoming months. Thanks for emailing the suggestion Sean! Stogie Tech Segment: Five Tips for Purchasing Cigars Online Avoid Sample Packs (Unless…) - Sample packs typically contain anywhere from 5 to 20 cigars and are priced at a steep discount from MSRP. Here's the first lesson about MSRP, its just that, a suggested price. Typically sticks sold online, especially ones sold exclusively online, are sold for much less than MSRP. So, when you do your math, add up the prices that you would pay if you bought each stick online at the going rate, not MSRP, then see if you are getting a deal. Also, make sure that you like ALL the cigars in the sample pack. Typically retailers will include some cigars that are okay or good, and some they are just trying to get rid of because they are sub-par. On a positive note, I love line samplers. These will consist of typically 5 cigars of the same brand and line, of 5 different sizes, so you can choose which one you like best. Shipping Should Be Free - Most major online retailers will offer free shipping. Sign up for their newsletter and check their sites often. Use caution though as they will limit it to select brands. For example, Davidoff almost never qualifies you for frees shipping. Famous Smoke and Cigars International almost always have a list of brands that ship for free. The other way to get free shipping is to buy one of their daily deals (see note below). At the time of this writing, Cigar.com is offering free shipping on all orders over $125, Famous Smoke is offering free shipping on over 100 brands, and Cigars International is offering free shipping with a purchase of the daily Joe Cigar deal. How "Daily Deals" Work - All three major sites (and possibly others) offer a daily deal. Here's how it works: For a limited time a deal goes up on the web site for a reduced price sampler or typically 10 pack of cigars. That deal stays up until a select quantity are sold, then it changes to the next deal. When you buy this deal most retailers offer you free shipping. So, you can monitor these sites and wait for your favorite sticks to come up. You can also pad your cart with something you want to buy, then buy the daily deal, and enjoy free shipping. Check out Joe's Jambalaya (Cigars International), Cigar Monster (Famous Smoke), and Cigar Sprint Sale (Cigars.com). Hunt For Rare & Limited - While you can find most major brands online and pick up deals here and there, online cigar shopping is also useful to find those rare and hard to find smokes. The thing is, you have to most fast. Typically online retailers will get shipments of different rare and limited smokes, and then after taking care of their buddies, put the rest online. They sell out fast, so I typically try to check a list of sites each week for hard to find stuff. My favorite used to be fullerspullers.com, but they are no longer selling cigars on the Internet. Recently I picked up some from Smoke Inn (Davidoff Colorado Claro) and some rare opus from Corona Cigar. It's Not Always A Bargain - I read most of the flyers that come from the major retailers, just to keep up on what is being offered, and maybe jump on a deal or two. Famous Smoke, Cigars International, and Thompson all send me catalogs on a regular basis, and well, lets face it, it makes great bathroom reading. However, I see so many smokes at all different prices. Th kicker is from the highest quality Davidoff to the sub-$1.00 deals, they all have an equally fabulous description, saying how great the flavors are and what an outstanding smoke it is. So, I gotta wonder, 1) who writes this crap 2) Who smokes all this and writes about it 3) How the heck can you sell a cigar for a $1 or less that may be a bundle but also has a band? If Its Probably Too Good To Be True - I want to throw out some things to think about. First, lets talk ends. There always seems to be an endless supply of "2nds" on the market. I don't think these are seconds, I think these are slightly different tobacco produced on a regular basis and sold to online retailers to fool you into buying something that will most likely suck. Sometimes smokes will come up as super cheap, or have this fabulous write-up, but are they really that good? Rather than spending your time buying cigars online (singles are not always easy to purchase and often don't ship free), visit your local B&M instead. Ask them if they are closing anything out or have any upcoming sales. Then buy singles of the stuff on sale, and smoke them. Then go back and stock up on the ones you like. This is where a local B&M shines over online retailers. Diversion of the Week Nada's (aka CigarGirlFL) cool Facebook album post. Tabacalera Perdomo Esteli, Nicaragua Tour Album

Cedar, earth, very cuban like. Perfect draw and great balance of flavors. They have mellowed a bit. "Box Worthy" Partagas Lucitania - Plugged. I finally gave up and smoked a PG Symphony 20. Jamie Garcia Limitada 2011 - Started slow, but once it got going it was great. Think these might need some more age. Great construction. "The Fiver" Illusione 888 Candela - Enjoyable! Has some kick with those subtle herbal flavors. Medium/Full bodied. One of the best balanced Candela's I have had. "The Fiver". Quesada Espania Corona - Plugged. Disappointing. Will definetly be revisting. Bolivar Petit Corona - Awesome! Flavors very different. Had a bit more of punch for a Cuban. Earthy and definitely a "fiver" Bolivar Belicoso Finos - Didnt like the first stick I smoked. Second rocked my world. Draw was awesome. Versatile smoke for anytime of the day. Opus X Chili Pepper - Unqiue format (It is shaped like a chilli pepper). Started off with blast of pepper and strength. Good but extremely strong. Cusano Lancero - Gifted by stogie santa as an unbanded. Pig Tailed cap lancero , it unravled so couldnt make it all the way through it. Need to revisit. Davidoff Aniversario No. 1 - Hint of grass, very smooth, well aged. Fantastic "The Fiver" Very different flavor profile. Arturo Fuente Untold Story - Underwelmed. I remember these being better. Four Kicks Robusto - Solid medium bodies, caramel sweetness. Good summer time smoke. A definite "fiver". Good grilling smoke, strong enough but not too strong. Litto Gomez Small Batch #4 - Good but needs some age. Tim's List Rocky Patel Decade Lonsdale (2008) - This Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapped beauty offered up some rich flavors including cherry, leather, and some pepper. Construction was perfect but I found the flavor profile a bit boring. Or maybe it was just the drunk homeless man that kept insisting Al looked like Whitey Bulger (he doesn't really). In the end, this stick was good but didn't change up much. "The Angler" Joya de Nicaragua Antano 1970 Machito (2004) - I wanted to pair something with a glass of Benjamin Prichard's Rye Whiskey I had just poured. That meant something that was a quick smoke but with a full flavor profile. I grabbed an original release of the Joya de Nicaragua Antano 1970 Machito that Stogie Santa had gifted me. This Petit Corona was probably the best smoke I had all weekend. Wow! I forgot how good the Antano is and the age only added to the experience. In conclusion, it paired perfectly with the Whiskey. "Box Worthy" El Triunfador Lancero Limited - Big Al had gifted me this beautiful 7 1/2 x 38 lancero. This Nicaraguan puro sports a triple cap with pig tail and unlike the regular line of El Triunfador, a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper. This stick started medium in strength and body and went great with my AM coffee. Flavors were rich and included espresso, cedar, and some spice. The strength and body picked up a bit as it progressed. Construction, burn, and draw were perfect in every sense. A definite "Fiver"! LFD El Jocko No. 1 Maduro - Available in either an Ecuadorian Connecticut or Mexican Maduro wrapper with a Nicaraguan binder and Dominican Piloto Cubano filler, this blend has been around for more than a decade. With it's LFD sweetness (Ligero maybe?) and A+ construction, I enjoyed it a great deal after a good meal. A definite "Fiver". La Aroma de Cuba EE No. 2 - The a Aroma de Cuba EE No. 2 is a 5 x 50 Robusto that sports a Ecuadorian wrapper and pairs perfectly with a morning cup of coffee. It is also versatile and flavorful enough to smoke anytime of the day. Made by Ashton, these always burn and draw perfectly. The only negative thing about smoking this cigar is it was my last one. I will need to pick up some more of these ASAP. "Box Worthy" My Father Le Bijou 1922 Federal Cigar 91st Cervantes Connecticut - The My Father Le Bijou 1922 Cervantes is an exclusive release for Federal Cigars in New Hampshire which is celebrating their 91st Anniversary this year. This 6.5 x 42 Lonsdale is available in either a Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro and a Ecuadorian Connecticut Shade wrapper. In this case, I smoked the CT in which only 50 boxes of 23 cigars were made and available for in store purchase only. Wow! Began with a blast of intense pepper and then quickly transitioned into a nice balance of roasted nuts and butterscotch with a nice buttery finish. The second third became more toasty with cedar and some spice and the last third amped up in body with the pepper returning. Hands down the best smoke I had all week. "Box Worthy" assuming they have any left. La Aroma de Cuba Robusto - Good smoke but I am more partial to the EE and Mi Amore. I have had this blend in the lancero however which really shines.

But you must be in the chatroom during the live show to win so be sure to tune in on February 10th. Cigar of the Week - Epifania by El Primer Mundo Epifania is the Spanish translation for Epiphany. The wrapper is Ecuadorian but it’s a totally different one from the Liga Miami (also made by El Primer Mundo) and is from a different farm. Both binders are Nicaraguan. Filler is Nicaraguan and Dominican and ihe cigar is finished with a triple capped. I will be releasing two more sizes this year, a robusto and a special size. This cigar is made in at El Titan de Bronze in Little Havana on Calle Ocho, Miami. MSRP around $10. Size: 6 x 52 Wrapper: Ecuador Binder: Nicaragua ( dual Nicaraguan binders) Filler: Dominican Republic, Nicaragua What else have you been smokin' Dale? Hoyo de Monterrey Excalibur Cameroon - Galahad (6.75” x 47) & Lancelot (7.25” x 54) - The “other” cigar from what used to be the 1066 line. A few weeks ago I smoked a couple Excalibur Dark Knights, this week I smoked a couple sizes of the Excalibur Cameroon line. Rolled in Honduras with fillers from the big 3 and a Connecticut Broadleaf binder under that delicate Cameroon wrapper, this cigar gives up lots of spice, leather and sweet grass flavors. I prefer the Dark Knight’s savory blend, but the Cameroon is a nice change occasionally. Vegas Robaina Unicos - 156mm x 52 - In the chat room last week, someone was smoking this cigar, and I had to go dig one out my humidor this week. In my book this is close to being the perfect piramide vitola. Subtle sweetness and leather aromas on the darkish wrapper, followed by lots of earthy and mocha flavors in the creamy, full bodied smoke. Not a power cigar, but full of bold complexities. Densely filled, makes lots of aromatic smoke and the ash holds on tight. What else have you been smokin' Bob? La Flor Dominicana Chisel, 6 x 54 - For those who remember a La Flor Dominicana cigar sampler that had a Chisel with a Cameroon wrapper, Litto Gomez decided to release it as its own limited-edition brand in December 2011. Origin: Dominican Republic, Wrapper: Maduro, Qty in Box: 10, Size: 6 x 54 . "We did a Chisel sampler that had one cigar with a Cameroon wrapper and it was very popular. A lot of requests came from retailers and consumers, but I didn't want to go into regular production with it, so I made only 500 boxes for December," Gomez said. The Cameroon Chisel is actually blended off La Flor Dominicana's Cameroon Cabinet line and although it isn't intended to be as full bodied as the Double Ligero Chisel, it isn't supposed to mild either. They come in boxes of 20 and retail for $8 each Royal Nicaraguan Robustos by Jesus Fuego - Sumatra (Natural-5x50) and Oscuro (Maduro-5x50) - This is J. Fuego’s first inexpensive bundled cigar. Bundles of 20 range in price from $43 to $49 depending on the size: Belicoso, (6x52); Churchill (7x52); Grande (6x60); or Robusto (5x50). Wrapper: Ecuador; Filler: Honduras; Binder: Honduras and Nicaragua What's My Band?- This week's unbanded, the Ashton Aged Maduro #40 was suggested by listener Jeff Curtis. Palio Cutter Contest: The winner of the December Silver Palio cutter was Tim Banic. Handmade in Don Pepin Garcia's Nicaraguan factory, Nestor Miranda Grand Reserve maintains an excellent medium to full-bodied flavor profile with many competing complexities throughout. The project started off with Nestor Miranda wanting to add an ultra-premium cigar to his portfolio. As usual, he went to the illustrious ‘My Father' factory to have this special project created. Made in Nicaragua, Grand Reserve was created as a small batch cigar with only 10,000 sticks made. The blend is comprised of all Nicaraguan fillers with a Connecticut Broadleaf maduro wrapper. The maduro wrapper is a dark brown color with a nice, oily hue. Upon lighting the cigar, you can instantly taste notes of chocolate from the maduro wrapper. Never over-powering, the cigar straddles the medium-full line and never disappoints as notes of espresso and cedar compliment the finish. What else have you been smokin' Dale? Camino Real Cabinet (red label) - The partner line to our COW last week. This version has a more savory flavor and more balanced between strength & body. I’ll buy more of these. Punch Rare Corojo 10th Anniversary Robusto - 5.5” x 50 Unlike it’s older cousins, the 10th Anny Rare Corojo has a wrapper of Connecticut grown Corojo. The line was previously named due to the reddish hue of the Ecuadorian grown wrapper. The binder is Connecticut Broadleaf and the fillers from the big 3. Outstanding construction, great draw and priced right! Leather, spice and a pie crust type of grain flavors. La Gloria Cubana Serie N 49 - 5.75” x 49 - A dark Oscuro cured Ecuador wrapper over Nicaraguan fillers & binder that is bold, heady and full of spice. Full bodied, full flavored and not lacking in strength. Enjoyed this one after a great Cuban coffee from Cuba Cuba. What else have you been smokin' Bob? Illuminati Crusade Red Label - Nice leathery, earthy base flavor with only a slight spice. The Crusade is a medium bodied cigar that features an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper with Nicaraguan binders and fillers. This is an exceptionally complex yet smooth smoke that is packed with flavor from start to finish. Wrapper: Ecuador Habano Binder: Nicaraguan Filler: Nicaraguan Available Sizes: Toro (6 x 54), Torpedo (6 1/2 x 52), Robusto (5 x 50) Boxes: 20 Cigars per box What's My Band?- This week's unbanded, Tampa Sweethearts No 185, was provided by listener Jay LeDou. Bob: This was one ugly cigar. Rough, veiny and certainly rustic. The first half of the cigar exhibited a slight woodsy flavor but not much flavor or smoke. The second half things picked up and the cigar had some spice, leather added to the woodsy flavor. Overall I have to say I did not enjoy smoking this cigar. Cigar of the Week - Arturo Fuente Special Selection brought to us by Duque Cigars (http://www.duquecigars.com/, 410 5th Avenue Indialantic, FL) What else have you been smokin' Dale? (Oliva Studio Tabac) Nub Double Maduro - 4” x 60 - or the Nub Dub as it’s affectionately called..... Really well constructed except they left off about 2” of the cigar! Dark, toasted flavors, rich and wildly complex. Notes of red fruit, leather, vanilla and yes - Marzapan over an oaky base. Rocky Patel Decade Toro - 6.5” x 52 - More secret tobaccos! Rocky is proud enough to mention the dark maduro Sumatra wrapper, but the filler & binder in this cigar is hush-hush. However, this is one RP cigar I seek out occasionally due to the nice sweetness, dark coffee notes and great balance in a full bodied cigar. (Hoyo de Monterrey) Excalibur Cameroon Merlin - 5.25” x 50 - From what used to be called the Excalibur 1066 line, now we have the Excalibur Cameroon. A full bodied Honduran cigar with a Connecticut Broadleaf binder and a Cameroon wrapper over a filler blend from Honduras, Nicaragua and the DR. I really enjoyed how the mild sweetness of the binder enhanced the slight spiciness of the wrapper. Both balanced well with the leather & earthy core of the filler blend. What else have you been smokin' Bob? Jameson Black Label - original release; the Black Label is a rich, complex cigar. The medium-full bodied blend features a naturally fermented Brazilian maduro wrapper, Honduran binder, and filler tobaccos from the Dominican Republic. This is a bold smoke that commands attention. Southbound Latitude by Jameson - Get the southern latitude attitude in a fine cigar, relaxing and smooth but full flavored. Latitude is the first release in the bundled SouthBound Series. A medium-bodied value smoke meant to be enjoyed every day. Latitude features Dominican fillers bound with a Criollo 98 leaf from the Dominican Republic and finished off with a broadleaf wrapper from Pennsylvania. Chinnock Cellars Terroir - A nice medium-bodied smoke that goes well with other things like wine, cheese and chocolate. However, the cigar does not stand out on its own and becomes a bit boring after awhile. Pueblo Dominicano Series II - The Series II is a very good cigar and comes at a reasonable price. Made from 100% Dominican tobaccos, it is rolled at the oldest cigar factory in the Dominican Republic, La Aurora. The Series II features a spicy four-year-old Dominican wrapper that perfectly compliments the complex blend of Dominican filler tobaccos. It is a medium-bodied cigar that has the exquisite flavor known to aficionados as that of a pure Dominican cigar, and even more impressively, it holds its own against the likes of more expensive puros such as OpusX and CAO Vision. What's My Band?- This week's unbanded, the Man O' War Puro Authentico was provided by listener Camryn Freeze. Palio Cutter Contest: The winner of the November Burl Palio cutter was Craig Rich. For December's contest, we are looking for photos of you and your friends enjoying cigars (all the better if they happen to be Esencias, but it will not affect your chances of winning). Send your entry to theshow@cigarmedia.tv. Please include your mailing address with your entry and type "Palio" on the subject line. Don't forget, you must re-enter the contest every month to be eligible to win. December's prize will be a silver Palio cutter. If you have suggestions for the "What's My Band?" segment, please send them to liz@cigarmedia.tv. Do you have a Cigar Review? If you call and leave a cigar review on the herfline and it is played on the show, you will receive a DogWatch Cigar Radio patch! Download Episode 5 Here Audio Feeds: Stogie of the Week Arturo Fuente Anejo #77 Shark Origin: Dominican Republic Wrapper: Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro (Aged 5 years, 8 months in Cognac Barrels.) Binder: Dominican Republic Filler: Dominican Republic Strength: Medium Vitola: Boxed-pressed torpedo Size: No. 77 (pyramid/torpedo) "The Shark" (5.8" x 54) Age: One year in Paul's humidor MSRP: $10.95 (I paid $14 last year, this year I bought a box for $10.99 a stick, they sell online for upwards of $21 a stick) Fun Facts: This is the only Anejo not wrapped in cedar. More from Vitolas.net: The Añejo Shark was actually made and named because of Marvin Shanken (Cigar Aficionado owner) and Carlito's brother in-law, Wayne Suarez.Carlito named it the "SS Shark" because they both loved this vitola and blend;one "S" stood for Shanken and the other "S" stood for Suarez. The "No.77" designation comes not from the ring gauge of this cigar, as it does for the other cigars in the Añejo line, but rather from a more amusing reason altogether.Carlito took his kids to Sea World in Orlando, FL, and there noticed that some of the sharks in the tank had two pectoral fins, which looked sort of like two 7's. Añejo (which means "aged, refined" in Spanish) cigars were originally released in June 2000 (in a very small batch), and then again in December 2000 due to Fuente being skittish about whether enough Opus X tobacco would be available after the hurricane hit their farm in 1998. Other Anejo Shark Reviews: Stogie Review (2009) Cigar Inspector: (2010) Smoking Stogie "Sand Shark" Review This week we are drinking Knappogue Castle 12 Year Single Malt Irish Whiskey Sam Houstin American Straight Whiskey Paul's This Week In Smoke Viaje Platino Reserva - Sour notes, I like the Oro Reserva better. Illusione 68 - One word: "meh". Anejo Shark - Same ones we are smoking now, year old #77, the best in the Anejo line, hard to find, blah blah. I really want to buy another box… Tatuaje RC 184 - This is perhaps my most favorite of all Pete Johnson creations. Stogie Santa turned me on to these and I smoked the RC 233 and RC 184. The 184 is one of my all-time favorite sticks, top ten list, just pure blows. The mellow Cuban flavors are just awesome, pours smoke, just all around one of the most enjoyable cigars you'll ever smoke. They were recently re-released and I bought a box without question. Davidoff Millennium Short Robusto - Say what you will about Davidoff, pricy, but awesome smoke! Flavors poured from this smoke making this blend my all-time Davidoff favorite (right next to Colorado Claro). I think what I have found, and our listeners already know, is that I have expensive taste in cigars. EP Carrillo Core Line - Cedar flavors, medium body, outstanding cigar for mid-day, fishing, working in the yard, or just relaxing with coffee. Alec Bradley Prensado - Great earthy flavors, would buy and try again. Get a 5 pack. Padron Family Reserve 44th Natural - This is one of the most awesome cigars you will ever smoke, however, the 44th natural/maduro, and the 45th in the same wrapper combinations are all good. But with a price range from $25-$30 a stick, even my expensive taste and cigar budget can't justify buying a box of each, or even just one box of one kind. I can buy two sticks at $15 for that price, and you can get some awesome sticks for $15 each. La Aurora Cameroon Lancero - Hands down the TOP cameroon wrapper implementation in the world, at least of the ones I've ever smoked and I'm not even a really big cameroon fan. The flavors on this cigar are outstanding, in fact, I bought another half a box. Its a light creamy wonderful experience that you can smoke any time of day or night. Damn, I want to go smoke one right now! Tatuaje Barcalay Rex - Limited release for one store, a fantastic smoke for $10 but don't pay more. Montecristo #2 (cuban) - Cedar flavors just explode from this cigar, a classic cuban brand and size that will always have a spot in my humi! Buy a box or two.   Tim's This Week In Smoke Arturo Fuente Anejo Reserva No 50 - First time I had tried the Robusto in the Anejo line and I am glad I did. Paired fantastically with a glass of Sam Houstin American Whiskey Partagas Menedex Master Series (2011) - The re-release of the 2009 limited edition. The 2009 release is one of my all time favorite sticks with a Cameroon wrapper. Although I agree with Paul on the La Aurora Cameroon Lancero being Number 1! They nailed the blend in the re-release! A larger (toro'ish) size (the original release was grand corona) but all the same great flavors. These should age great! "Box Worthy" IMO Oliva V Serie Maduro Especial (2011) - Much better than the 2010 IMO. It had a quite bit of saltiness on the finish that I was not really a big fan of. But a good smoke for the price. A solid "Fiver" Casa Fernandez Miami Reserva - Released this year at the IPCPR. This stick is a 5.75 x 54 Toro with a lot of wood, exotic spice, and some burnt caramel on the finish. In the end I gave it a rating of "The Angler" mostly due to its lack of complexity. Enjoyable but nothing I would seek out again. Caveat: I am a bit more forgiving with less complexity in a smaller vitola and would love to try this blend in a Robusto Tatuaje Saints & Sinners - One of fifteen cigars shipped as part of Pete Johnson of Tatuaje Cigars memberhip site. This stogie is based on the Black blend and is a Corona Gorda with a Criollo '98 wrapper. It was "meh" Tatuaje RC184 - Most definitely the best cigar I smoked during the holiday weekend. This 184 millimeter retro Cuban lives up to its name. Paul says "The Oasis"! I say "Box Worthy!" We agree this is a fantastic stick! Padron 1964 Anniversary Series Maduro Principe - I mean, really? Who doesn't like a box 1964 Anniversary Padron's as a gift? Nuff' said. Stogie Tech Segment Cigar Wrapper 101 Some sources state the wrapper can add as much of 40% of the flavor to a smoke. When talking about wrappers there is a lot of thinks to consider; Origin & Type of Tobacco - Different regions are suitable for different types of tobacco. For example, Connecticut Broadleaf often used in Maduros has specific characteristics. The climate and soil contents of the region can also have an affect (i.e. temperature, volcanic ash in the soil, etc...) How Grown & Harvested - Shade, Sun, etc... provides distinctive characteristics to the wrapper used. How Tobacco is Used - The curing, fermentaton, and aging process and times can vary greatly from one manufacturer to another and have a major outcome on the wrapper they produce for that cigar. Unfourtunately, this is often kept secret by the makers of the cigar. All of this can affect the wrappers flavor, color, and construction and consequently the cigar you enjoy. The color of wrapper can often give you a general indication of type of flavors that will be present (but not always). Double Claro - These are typically referred to as a Candela. Very light, slightly green. Leaf is picked before maturity and consequently retains some of the green chlorophyll. Not as popular as it once was. Some boutique bends, such as Illusione and Viaje, recently released cigars in a Candela Wrapper. Flavors can often be herbal or grassy nature. Claro - Very Light tan. This is your shade grown tobacco. The Camacho Connecticut and E.P. Carillo New Wave Connecticut talked about during Episode 3 are both great examples. Colorado Claro - I would characterized this as medium brown in color. This is often reffered to as a Natural which can mean a lot of different things to different manufacturers. For example, Padron's Natural wrappers are very dark compared to most. Colorado - Sometimes called Rosado, it has a reddish tint to it. Often associated with a Corojo wrapper such as with the Illusione Epernay line. Colorado Maduro - Darker brown but not quite dark enough to be a maduro. A common wrapper that falls in this category is the Cameroon. Maduro - A very dark brown wrapper that has gained popularity in recent years due to its rich flavors. Usually Sun grown, Connecticut Broadleaf is one of the most common examples. More recently tobacco from Mexico and Brazil has been producing some interesting maduro wrappers. Oscuro - Sometimes called a Double Maduro. Very black and rich in flavor. Sometimes manufacturers will dye the leaf for this effect, sometimes not. Steve Saka, President of Drew Estate, posted a great post on the ways the color of a Maduro and Oscuro wrapper can be achieved. I could not do the subject justice and recommend you read his post here

Bob and Dale welcome a new sponsor to the show -Stogie Boys, America's fastest growing online cigar retailer. Bob, Dale and Liz answer a question from Wes (FragmagnetEOD) and his wife, Dominique, about what smokers mean when they describe a cigar's taste. (Click here to read Liz's written answer.) The discussion broadens into how altitude and temperature affect cigar tastes and smells. Listener Nelson Pidgeon offers a tip on eliminating cigar smell from a room. The Cigar of the Week, the Padron 2000 Robusto Maduro 5 x 50, was provided by Duque Cigar Company in Indialantic, Florida. On "What's hot? What's not? What's next?" Liz interviews Vincent Duran from the Little Havana Cigar Factory on Calle Ocho in Little Havana, Miami. The cigar featured in the "What's My Band" segment of the show, the Little Havana Overruns "Small Batch," was provided by listener Jay Ledou. Enter November's Palio Cutter Contest by sending a photo of you or your friends enjoying a cigar to theshow@cigarmedia.tv. (Don't forget to include your mailing address and type "Palio" on the subject line.) More winners this month! In addition to awarding the Palio Cutter to some lucky listener, Bob and Dale will also be giving away five 5-packs of La Tradicion Cubana Coronas provided by Luis Sanchez to commemorate the 16th anniversary of La Tradicion Cubana. To see the contest pictures, click on the Contest icon on the www.cigarmedia.tv home page. Remember you must re-enter each month to be eligible to win. Check out the live show! Go to http://www.cigarmedia.tv/live/ where the show is broadcast live most Friday evenings at 9 PM EDT. Cigar of the Week - Padron 2000 Robusto Maduro 5 x 50 brought to us by Duque Cigars (www.duquecigars.com, 410 5th Avenue Indialantic, FL) The Padron 2000 is a Nicaraguan Puro made in Esteli with long-aged Cuban seed tobaccos. Square-pressed shape with dark, oily wrappers. Limited annual production. Affordable price - under $5. Also comes in a Natural Robusto. Offered in boxes of 26 and in four packs. What else have you been smokin' Dale? GAR Opium STK - 6” x 52 - Craig reviewed this cigar on his last visit to the show & I got so excited about it I had to go find one! The wrapper & binder are Nicaraguan, with the wrapper being a Habano 2000/Corojo 1998 hybrid. The filler blend is not released, just described by George Rico as “a unique blend”. The cigar was very well constructed and had a perfect draw. Flavors throughout the cigar were cedar, light exotic spices and a light, crisp fruitiness (apple or pear). Body was medium in the first half, moving to full the rest of the way. Smooth, sophisticated and very well balanced, this cigar was as unique as Craig mentioned. Very enjoyable and box-worthy! MSRP $9, $10.50 with CO confiscatory taxes. Devil’s Weed Maduro Churchill - 7” x 48 - Acquired from the buy-out stock at CI (along with several bundles of the natural wrapped Robusto), this is a fantastic bargain for magnificent cigars. When Bob & I discovered Devil’s Weed cigars, we couldn't’ stop smoking them...and again I find myself having one every day. Dominican tobaccos wrapped in a dark maduro leaf provide a medium bodied, full flavored trip down memory lane. Cedar, coffee, toasted grains and some sweetened cocoa flavors. Illusione 88 Maduro -5” x 52 - Utilizing an oily San Andreas wrapper over binder & filler of Nicaraguan tobaccos, the Maduro line of Illusione cigars, like the core line, highlights one of the skills of a fine blender - namely that each vitola, while similar in flavor, has it’s own characteristics and personality. I’ve smoked the cg4 (corona), the hl (lancero) and now the 88 (robusto) in this line, and all are fantastic. The 88 showcases the spice and dark fruit (raisin) sweetness best. The hl highlights the leather, coffee and earthiness and seems the most complex. The cg4 seems to balance all of those flavors equally. All these flavors are present in the line, just find the one that gives you the most of what you like best! What else have you been smokin' Bob? Cohiba Extra Vigarosa - You know, I am not usually a fan of Cohibas. I typically find them to be underflavored and overall dull. However, the Extra Vigarosa is an exception and I really enjoyed it. The Cohiba X-V is a very limited quantity cigar and the most bold of the entire line from General Cigar. Dark flavors run around your mouth and dance in the air as this cigar fills you with memories of cold winter nights in front of an oak fire. With a dark Capa Corona Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper that is bold, flavorful and smooth. The filler is Nicaraguan Ligero and Piloto Cubano Ligero. The binder is a balancing Connecticut Broadleaf. Available in 5 sizes: the X-V 749 7x49; the X-V 660 6x60; the X-V 652 6x52; my choice, the X-V 645 6x45; and the X-V 550 5x50. An excellent smoke that has made me a fan of Cohiba, at least of the X-V line. Esencia Petite Corona - The Esencia Petite Corona has become a favorite of ours over the years. At 5 1/8 x 42, this is the perfect smoke for those times that time is in short supply. Like when dinner is just around the corner or you want more smoke before retiring for the evening. Smooth flavors of spice, cedar and a nice leather undertone mark the Esencia line and the Petite Corona delivers a full flavored smoke every time. The perfect match for a glass of whiskey or a great cup of coffee, this cigar stands up to the test of time. What's My Band? - This week's unbanded, the Little Havana Overruns "Small Batch," was provided by listener Jay Ledou. Palio Cutter Contest: The winner of the October carbon fiber Palio cutter was Mark Pousard from Colorado. For November's contest, we are looking for photos of you and your friends enjoying cigars (all the better if they happen to be Esencias, but it will not affect your chances of winning). Colin Ganley, editor of Cigar Journal is back with Dale and Bob this week. Cigar Research Updates the Mobile Stogie App with over 1000 new cigars bringing its inventory to over 10,000 cigars. The guys talk about Pete Daly's (aka BigPete's) email and how a cigar's label may affect how we perceive a cigar's flavor. Big Pete thanks Craig Schneider, DWCR's regular guest host, for his advice on how to taste a cigar's flavors. The featured 'Cigar of the Week' is the NHC (New Havana Cigars) Tatuaje Capa Especial from Pete Johnson. Liz talks to Bryan Newbury of Centro Cigars in Kansas on this week's What's hot? What's not? What's next? segment. The 'What's My Band?' cigar is the Macanudo Cru Royale suggested by Dan Crouch. Check out the live show! Go to http://www.cigarmedia.tv/live/ where the show is broadcast live most Friday evenings at 9 PM EST. Cigar of the Week - NHC (New Havana Cigars) Tatuaje Capa Especial from Pete Johnson In 2010, Pete Johnson produced the NHC Seleccion Limitada for us in both Natural (Habano) and Reserva (Broadleaf) wrappers. This year, on a factory trip, Dan from New Havana Cigars was sampling the Tatuaje 7th Capa Especial and fell in love with the Sumatra wrapper. "Wonder what the NHC SL would be like with this wrapper?" He asked Pete. "Let's find out" was the reply, and he had the rollers whip up some samples. They both LOVED it. "How many NHC bands you have left?" So they checked the stock and there were enough to produce around 70 boxes of 20. The factory made new boxes to house 20 cigars each and that was that. If you are a fan of the Natural and Reserva, you will love this new one! NHC Seleccion Limitada Capa Especial (Sumatra) (6 3/4 x 42). What else have you been smokin' Dale? Lou Rodriguez Edicion Premier Maduro - 5 x 50 Robusto - I’ve had two of these in the past week, the first given to me by Bill Featherston while visiting his home in Overland Park, and the 2nd given to me by Lou Rodriguez himself at the Rocky Mountain Cigar Fest. These are awesome smokes, available in 7 formats. The two I need to smoke next are the Bom-Bom (4.75 x 42) and the Lancero (7.5 x 38). The filler blend and binder are Nicaraguan, covered with a gorgeous San Andres wrapper. Lou only describes the blend as “proprietary”, meaning he won’t give up the exact varieties and growing regions. I’m always curious, but it really doesn’t matter. The cigars are marvelous! Full bodied and full flavored, the tobacco is supremely fermented & aged, the formats are many yet traditional and the experience is what cigar smoking should be. CAO OSA Sol - 6 x 54 Toro - With an MSRP of about $6, this cigar will fit a lot of smoker’s budgets. Wrapped with a light colored Olancho San Agustin leaf (from the Honduran valley of the same name), the filler is Honduran & Nicaraguan. The binder is Connecticut Broadleaf. Medium bodied with a rustic character and smooth, creamy flavors. The wrapper imparts a unique earthy/spicy taste that I haven’t yet been able to pin down. The leather and light spice from the filler is what I expect from Honduran tobacco, and the Broadleaf binder gives the blend a subtle sweetness that balances well. What else have you been smokin' Bob? La Reloba Sumatra Torpedo - I have decided that the Sumatra is my favorite La Reloba; the flavors are smooth, with a little spice and a wonderful hint of sweetness. Le Bijou 1922 Petite Robusto - a very sexy new size in a great cigar. What's My Band? - Unbanded #980 the Macanudo Cru Royale 6.5x42, suggested by Dan Crouch Palio Cutter Contest: The August winner will be announced next week. Enter the September contest now. Remember, you must re-enter each month to be eligible to win the featured Palio cutter. Starting in October, we will be revising the Palio contest so start thinking now. Dale is back from a well earned vacation during which he visited Kansas retailers Centro Cigars and Outlaw Cigar. This week Bob and Dale are joined by Colin Ganley, editor of Cigar Journal. The featured 'Cigar of the Week' is the 22 Degrees North / 83 Degrees West cigar blended by Jesus Fuego. Keith Brown calls in on the herf line to take Bob to task about his comments on big box retailers. The 'What's My Band?' cigar, the My Father Edicion Limitada 2011, was graciously supplied by Adam Zilinski this week. Check out the live show! Go to http://www.cigarmedia.tv/live/ where the show is broadcast live most Friday evenings at 9 PM EST. Cigar of the Week - 22 Degrees North / 83 Degrees West Two Guys Smoke Shop named this as the 2010 Cigar of the Year. It comes in boxes of 20 in the following sizes: 5 1/2 x 46, 4 7/8 x 49, and 6 x 50. Here's what Two Guys had to say about this cigar: 22N/83W is the Latitude and Longitude where you will find Hacienda el Corojo, a plantation that once (1930 – 1990) grew arguably the best tobacco in the world. Today, that tobacco seed is no longer used because of its low yields and susceptiblity to disease. However, the seed still exists and is used in the entire blend of this unique cigar. 22N/83W uses authentic El Corojo seed in its entire 5-Country blend, from its Nicaraguan, Honduran and Dominican el Corojo filler, to its Costa Rican certified el Corojo binder and ending with its lush, oily Brazilian el Corojo seed Wrapper. What else have you been smokin' Dale? Don Pepin Garcia Blue label “A”- 9” x 48 Picked this A size cigar up at the Outlaw event last weekend after seeing Bill Featherston smoke one during the entire event on Saturday! I’ve raved about this blend in the Lancero size, so it was only natural to go for the gusto and try it in the longest traditional format. It made 2.5 hours of my 8 hour drive home most memorable! Spice, pepper, cedar, molasses and some tangy citrus flavors. Med-full bodied with a smooth, creamy smoke. Tatuaje Havana VI Verocu No. 5 - 4” x 40 Following the sucess of the 4 original limited release Verocu cigars, Pete released the line as an extension of the Havana VI line. Packaged in a cabinet of 50 with the traditional triple cap and no band, this is the smallest format of the Tatuaje lines, although this little stick is big on flavor. A mini spice bomb with all the savory flavors you’d expect. Also one finds a bit of floral notes on the palette and in the retrohale. All Nicaraguan blend with a Habano variety wrapper. La Casita Criolla HCB - 5.12” x 42 Corona An old Cuban brand name brought back to life by Pete Johnson, this blend (well, a blend only in the sense of Seco, Viso & Ligero) is pure Connecticut Broadleaf tobacco. The darker maduro leaves are used in the wrapper, and the other grades are used for filler & binder. Cedar, nuts and a mild licorice sweetness vary in intensity throughout the cigar in this med-full bodied smoke. Towards the end, a bit of chocolate and exotic spices become more apparent. A truly marvelous cigar that I will smoke often! All three sizes are traditional, the other two being the HCBC at 5.63 x 46 and the HCBF at 6.5 x 48. Fausto FT153 - 6” x 50 Toro The T110 blend (Nicaraguan filler & binder, Ecuadorian Habano Maduro wrapper) is now the Fausto line, but the T110 size is not a part of it since it was a limited release. Said to be Pete Johnson's strongest cigar blend, I find it well balanced and very flavorful. Indeed, it’s got some power, but not unapproachable by most. Most notable is the spiciness, pepper and subtle sweetness over a leathery core. Also in 3 other sizes: FT127 - 5 x 54, FT140 - 5.5 x 52 and FT156- 6.5 x 48. As with the La Casita Criolla, the Fausto brand is an old Cuban brand resurrected and trademarked by Pete. Gurkha Beast - 6.5 x 58 Bob talked about this cigar a couple weeks ago and I had to try it. Dominican, Honduran and Colombian fillers are surrounded by a Nicaraguna binder and a Costa Rican Maduro wrapper from the 1996 vintage. I found it med-full bodied, full flavored and medium in strength. Very high quality construction and a sweet room aroma made it a joy to smoke in spite of it’s massive girth. Dark fruit, coffee and cedar are the core flavors with some cocoa coming on in the last third. The finish is smooth and sweet. As with it’s companion cigar, the Gurkha Beauty, when I can pick these up on sale, I will, but at almost $700 for a box of 35 cigars, they’re not on my everyday list. What else have you been smokin' Bob? J. Fuego Gran Reserva Corojo No 1 Originals - Loaded with cocoa in a full bodied experience that out shines the size of this tasty cigar from master blender Jesus Fuego, and at a great price Art Deco - A sweet, slightly spicy offering from the minds at Miami Cigar & Co. I like these and yes I like the metal Art Deco box as well. Jesus Fuego's Sangro de Toro Original - Gotta love this format, 5 sticks in a paper package at a great price. Tremendous flavor - I just can’t remember what it was, but I remember I liked the slightly organic spice and leathery base. What's My Band? - Thank you to Adam Zilinski for supplying the My Father Edicion Limitada 2011's for the unbanded segment this week. Palio Cutter Contest: Steve Morgan from Alabama won the July contest and received a classic black Palio cutter. Enter the August contest now to win a silver cutter. This week's special guest, Doug Fiore, fills in Bob and Dale on the International Premium Cigar and Pipe Retailer (IPCPR) show in Las Vegas. (For the first time in five years, neither Bob nor Dale were able to attend the IPCPR event, but have big plans for next year when the show will be held in Orlando.) Check out Professor Fiore's column to read more about this year's IPCPR. Bob talks with Mark Brownlee of Cigar Rights of America (CRA) about CRA's newly created Consumer Advisory Board. Bob is proud to be one of the eight new board members. Dale talks about his plans to attend the 2nd Annual Rocky Mountain Cigar Festival on Aug 28th in Boulder, Colorado. Stan Wojculewski from New Jersey pushes Bob to explain his previous comments on internet retailing practices. The Cigar of the Week is the 777 Zero by J. Fuego. The cigar featured on the "What's My Band?" blind smoke test is the Siglo IV Limited Reserve. Check out the live show! Go to http://www.cigarmedia.tv/live/ where the show is broadcast live most Friday evenings at 9 PM EST. Cigar of the Week - 777 Zero by J.Fuego. A Nicaraguan binder and filler to compliment the Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper. Offered in 4 sizes: 5.5x46 Corona, 5.5x54 Belicoso, 5x50 Robusto, and 6x52 Toro. What else have you been smokin' Dale? La Reloba Habano Robusto - 5 x 50 One of the most affordable cigars from the My Father factory in Nicaragua, the La Reloba line is all Nicaraguan longfillers and binder. The Habano line is wrapped with a beautiful, toothy Nicaragua Habano leaf that has a reddish hue, and is aromatic, with scents of deeply fermented tobacco. Medium bodied at the start, growing to a fuller bodied smoke by the halfway point. Tons of great savory flavors - oak, grains, spices and a mild sweetness. The finish brings out some pepper and some nuttiness. Available in 3 other sizes, all priced from $4.50 to $6.50. The line also is available with a Sumatra wrapper for those who prefer a spicier, slightly sweeter character. Highly recommended! Saint Luis Rey Serie G Maduro - 5 x 54 Another value cigar that was brought back to my humidor from the unbanded segment a few weeks ago. This cigar features a thick, oily Connecticut Broadleaf maduro wrapper over a Connecticut Broadleaf binder. The filler is all Nicaraguan tobaccos. A bold, full flavored cigar with full body, good construction and great balance. The core flavors are earthy, with cocoa, coffee, cedar, and exotic spices. There is a solid natural sweetness that supports and enriches the other flavors. In boxes of 25 cigars for around $100 - truly lots of bang for your buck. What else have you been smokin' Bob? Viaje Satori - One of those rare limited production cigars from Viaje the Satori (japanese for enlightenment, more on that later). This cigar boasts a dark Oscuro wrapper and pure Nicaraguan innards that at first may not seem to be anything different than a number of other Nicaraguan puro cigars. But when smoking the Satori, you are truly blessed with enlightenment as the flavor envelopes your brain and your palate begins to float amongst the woody, spice flavors of this distinct cigar. I had mine in my humidor for a year waiting for the right moment but I must say, any moment is right for enlightenment. Elogio LSV Robusto - Certainly one of my favorite smokes and one of Liz’s as well. The LSV is a Nicaraguan puro sporting a sungrown Oscuro wrapper fermented by the blender himself, Carlos Pereda. A complex cigar with great soft spices and a subtle sweetness that is entirely unique. What's My Band? - this week's Unbanded Cigar is the Siglo IV Limited Reserve. Bob: Very pleasant pre-light aroma of fresh cut straw. But what a bland cigar; best flavor was the aftertaste that was slightly cedar. Boring. Dale: Ugly mottled wrapper, good draw, messy ash. Dry and bitter. Flavors of cardboard with a touch of oatmeal being the only savory component Do you have a suggestion for the unbanded cigar of the week? Every week Bob and Dale include an “unbanded cigar” segment in their show in which they smoke a cigar without any markings and give their honest opinions. This week Bob and Dale discuss Operation Cigar Liberty which was launched by Cigar Rights of America to support federal legislation (H.R. 1639) that calls upon the U.S. Food & Drug Administration – Center for Tobacco Products not to regulate premium/traditional cigars, as they do other tobacco products. In commemoration of this proactive piece of federal legislation, as the first of its kind in history in the form of H.R. 1639, Cigar Rights of America is starting a national petition drive for 1,639 petitions from each Congressional District in America. With 435 members of Congress, that's 712,965 petitions. That's over 7,000 petitions to each member of the United States Senate. When elections are being decided by dozens, hundreds and a few thousand votes, they will listen. So with one simple click, where all you submit is a name, email address and zip code, you can have a place in history. At the request of a listener, Dale keeps a diary of his cigars over the last week. ER Doc calls in on the Herf Line to talk about Para Japon, by La Aurora and Cigar Tourism. The cigar featured on the "What's My Band?" blind smoke test is the Oliva Series V Churchill Extra 7 x 52, which was provided by Liz. The Cigar of the Week is the Punch After Dinner. The Cigar Rights of America membership special for DogWatch listeners is still running! This is a 7.25 x 46 version of the basic Punch line - well except its Maduro. Wrapper is Ecuadorian Sumatra; filler is Honduran, Nicaraguan, Dominican (Piloto Cubano); and the binder is Connecticut Broadleaf. Factory: Honduras American Tabaco S. A., Cofradia, Honduras. If you like, as Bob does, a strong flavored cigar without any harshness or bitterness that also comes in at a value price ($78.95 / box of 25) then do yourself and your wallet a favor by trying these out. The flavors are deep and dark with overtones of coffee and chocolate but with an overwhelming aged tobacco flavor. Hits the spot any time of the day and is especially good with DogWatch Dark coffee from BlackDogCoffee.net. Dark Side - - No Dark Side this week. What else have you been smokin' Dale? I received an email asking what my “normal” week’s worth of cigars looks like. I’m sure my cigar weeks are anything but normal, but I kept track of every brand of cigar I smoked this week. Some I smoked several of, most I smoked just one.......... Tatuaje Havana VI Artisitas- La Requiza #4 - Oliva Serie G Maduro - Cain Daytona - Quesada Tributo - Padron 3000 Maduro - Famous Nic 7000 - Cain Habano - BOTL - Joya de Nicaragua Dark Corojo - Illusione 4/2g Candela - Illusione 888 - Don Pepin Garcia Cuban Classic 1979 - A.F. Don Carlos #2 - CAO Brazilia - EPC Short Run - J. Fuego Origin - LFD Air Bender - Famous Nic 3000 - Punch Rare Corojo. What else have you been smokin' Bob? Santos de Miami Haven (6x54) from Jameson Cigars - A powerful offering from the La Tradicion Cubana factory in the Dominican Republic made for Jameson Cigars, Brad Mayo. This is really what power is all about in a cigar. No harshness, smooth tobacco flavors with a very slight sweetness to offset the spicy concoction. This is a square pressed (boxed in square forms to preserve the shape) beauty that smokes the way the finest Opus X’s should smoke! Made with all Dominican grown tobaccos with a Havana Corojo wrapper, Criollo ’98 binder, and Corojo and Criollo fillers. A value at $80/box of 10. Cuba Libre One - I opened the humidor the other day and pulled out a cigar that I had been looking at for awhile - the Cuba Libre One (a gift from a fellow cigar enthusiast). At that moment I knew nothing about the cigar having lived in a cave for the last several months. I hesitated slightly as I pulled it from the box. I was looking for a good morning smoke to finish off my coffee and this was an unknown to me, but I clipped the torpedo head and lit up anyway. That was perhaps the best decision I made until later that day I decided to take a break from work by enjoying my third cigar of the day, a Curavari red label. Turns out that Cuba Libre One is a new cigar for 2011 from Nestor Plascencia and the Segovia factory masters. This cigar flooded my palate with bold flavors of coffee, pepper and aged tobaccos with a decidedly umami character. The cigar is well balanced and does not overwhelm with nicotine; a testament to its fine aging. Made with a blend of Nicaraguan ligero from Esteli and Condega with a dual binder of Habano from Jalapa and a spicy leaf from Costa Rica. The wrapper is a slick Honduran ligero that seems to bring the whole thing together. Robust and refined, this will make an excellent addition to your humidor. A mere $80 per box on-line. Punch UpperCut - Did they change this blend? I ask because I find the latest ones much more smokeable than before. A decent cigar that may not meet the expectations of the famed island tobacco it is made from but it is a sweet spicy bundle of joy that pleases my palate morning and night. Maybe these just needed a little more time to settle in to their prime smoking age? What's My Band? - this week's Unbanded Cigar, the Oliva Series V Churchill Extra 7 x 52, was provided by Liz. This week Dale calculates how many cigars he and Bob have smoked during the 7 years that the DogWatch Cigar Radio podcast has been broadcast. (At 3 cigars per day, they have each smoked about 6,500 stogies - or a little over 600 boxes of cigars together.) Also in this week's show, Bob interviews Brian Berman from Cigar Rights of America (CRA) to update listeners about CRA actvities including the FDA attempts at regulating tobacco. (Click here to learn more.) Brian also answers questions about the inclusion of pipe tobacco in the CRA fight. Liz and Bob discuss how Men Smoke on Mars and Women Smoke on Venus in a special edition of "What's hot? What's not? What's next?" The “Pasha” is named for Bill’s father, William S. Paley. As founder and chairman of CBS, William reached into every home in America. It was his interest in promoting the sales of the family cigar company through the use of radio that led him to the broadcasting business. Though known as “The Chairman” at work, he was jokingly known as “Pasha” at home. Size: 7.25 x 50 Wrapper: Ecuador or Costa Rica Binder: Costa Rica Filler: Honduras and Nicaragua Dark Side - - No Dark Side this week. What else have you been smokin' Dale? BOTL by Abe Flores - Corona Gorda Thanks to Rob (patron at Burning Leaf cigar shop) and Justin for gifting me a box of these fabulous cigars! Rich, bold and spicy with deep earthy flavors. Quesada Tributo Julio Robusto - This cigar was released in 2010 in Tribute to the Quesada family members lost in a tragic airplane crash. Wrapper is an Ecuadorian grown hybrid (Habano 2000, Corojo, HVA and Sumatra), the binder is Honduran Ligero and the filler is Jamastran Nicaragua & Domincan Criollo 98 Ligeros. Very rich and earthy, with mouth filling sweet spiciness, cocoa and coffee flavors. The aromas are delightfully herbal and woody. A wonderfully complex & balanced cigar! Cain Maduro 550 Robusto - We’ve talked about thes cigars extensively, so not much to add this week other then they remain consistently well made. Bold flavors, chewy body and outstanding construction. This week the maduro is my favorite, last week it was the Habano. EPC Short Run Delirios - The 2nd release from the new EPC venture, the Short Run is just that - only 1500 boxes of each size (3) were made on the initial run. Nicaraguan & Dominican longfillers wrapped up in a Nicaraguan binder and a gorgeous Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper. I love the nutmeg spiciness and core of wood & well fermented tobacco flavors all presented in a creamy, full bodied smoke. The Short run is a bit fuller then EPC’s inaugural cigar What else have you been smokin' Bob? Punch After Dinner Maduro - 7.25x46 version of the basic Punch line, well except it's Maduro. Wrapper is Ecudorian Sumatra; filler is Honduran, Nicaraguan, and Dominican (Piloto Cubano); and the binder is Connecticut Broadleaf. If you like, as I do, a strong flavored cigar without any harshness or bitterness that also comes in at a value price ($78.95 / box of 25) then do yourself and your wallet a favor by trying these out. The flavors are deep and dark with overtones of coffee and chocolate but with an overwhelming aged tobacco flavor. Hits the spot any time of the day for me and is especially good with DogWatch Dark coffee from Black Dog Coffee. Factory: Honduras American Tabaco S. A., Cofradia, Honduras. Partagas Cifuentes Seasonal Blend - Partagas Cifuentes Blend is a limited availability extension to the Partagas portfolio of cigars. It builds upon the legacy of Ramon Cifuentes by introducing a cigar especially blended for the Fall season by Ramon’s protégés, Daniel Nunez and Benji Menendez. Cifuentes Seasonal Blend cigars are medium-to-full bodied, rich in flavor, and use a special Honduran Medio-Tiempo wrapper, as well as Nicaraguan filler and binder tobaccos. A surprisingly good cigar from a large cigar maker. No that’s not fair but it is true, this cigar has wonderful flavor IF you like a lighter cigar. Some do not like it as it is lighter but I find it is a great way to start the day with a cup of very strong coffee or very weak coffee if that’s what you are in to. Wrapper: Honduran Medio Tiempo Filler: Nicaraguan Binder: Nicaraguan Country: Dominican Republic Factory: General Cigar Dominicana $77 to $85 per box Padrón 1964 Anniversary Series Maduro Monarca What's My Band? - this week's Unbanded Cigar, the La Flor Dominicana Careroon Cabinet Lancero (a non-production cigar), was provided by Carl Holtman. This week listeners were heavily involved in the content of the show. Bob and Dale answered emails from listeners Bryan Newbury and Kris Allen; herf lines from Don Hubbell and Norbert; and a chat room question from Todd, who was viewing the show live at www.livestream.com/cigar_radio (where the show is broadcast live most Friday evenings at 9 PM EST). This week's unbanded, the Hoyo de Monterrey Excalibur 1066 Dark Knight III Maduro, was suggested by Jay LeDou. Cigar of the Week - La Sirena - The Prince 5x50 Distributed by Miami Cigar & Company (Nestor Miranda & Rene Castenada); brand champion is Arielle Ditkowich. Manufactured in Nicaragua at My Father Cigars. 5 sizes - 5.5 x 42; 5 x 50; 5.5 x 52 figurado; 6 x 60; and 7 x 50. MSRP between $8 and $10.50 before confiscatory taxes. All Nicaraguan blend of Criollo ‘98 & Corojo ‘96; a dual binder using Nica Habano & Corojo; topped off with a Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro wrapper. Darkside - Fonseca No 1 Also....an unbanded dark side cigar from one of the DR trip participants. Mercer Pinar del Rio Custom roll - Piramides 6.5” x 52 Dark wrapper & large ring gauge, would not have guessed all Cuban tobacco from PdR. Slight leather, but mostly bold spice with some hot chili character and a great sweet/astringent combination like toasted walnuts. Excellent construction, great burn and a med-full bodied smoke. What else have you been smokin' Dale? Illusione Epernay LaMonde - The LaMonde is the newest size (released in 2010) in the Epernay line. At 6.25” x 52, it’s the largest vitola in the line, and perhaps the one I like most behind the original Epernay released for European Cigar Journal’s 15th Anniversary. The line is of all Nicaraguan grown Criollo and Corojo with a Cafe Colorado wrapper. Very creamy & smooth with honey, coffee & herbal flavors. La Flor Dominicana Air Bender Chisel - The famous Chisel shape (6.5” x 54) in the Air Bender blend, the line also includes 6 other parejo sizes. Other than a Ecuadorian wrapper, all tobaccos are grown in the DR on Litto Gomez farm. In this size the blend expresses a strong coffee flavor on top of a leather core. It’s well balanced, but not extremely complex. Fonseca Vintage Robusto - A true Robusto size with the old style Dominican character yet provides lots of flavor and satisfies as well as any “new style” cigars coming from any factory today. Cedar, leather & light coffee flavors are dominant, with a slight Rum sweetness, floral aromas and rounded spice notes, especially in the last half of the cigar. Excellent construction & burn, approachable and suitable for any occasion. What else have you been smokin' Bob? La Tradicion Cubana Anniversary - These cigars are no longer in production and that is unfortunate, in fact I think I got the last full box that Luis had on the shelf in Miami. These are really good cigars with complex flavors, long burns and packed with smoke. The cigar burns so well that the other day I left one sitting in my car while I went in to Walgreens. When I came out, the cigar was still burning and required absolutely no effort to get back to smoking. how many cigars can you do that with? Barely a handful to my knowledge. Perdomo Estate Seleccion Vintage (ESV) 1991 from Justin Bill. The fillers are a mix of tobaccos grown in Esteli, Nicaragua and harvested in 1991. The wrapper is a Connecticut Broadleaf. Today's size is a 6 x 54. Nice nuttiness - no bitterness and a short finish combined to make this a very nice after dinner relaxing smoke. Retrohale was slightly disturbing - very bitter almond aroma evoked an unpleasant flavor. Tatuaje Black Torpedo Tubo - I was really disappointed in this cigar. I had it in my humidor for a year waiting for an opportunity to compare it to the one I had a year ago. In my opinion, this was not a very good cigar; the flavors were off and the draw was awful. I liked this cigar a year ago although I did not think it was spectacular. Now it is just mediocre and it was difficult to finish. What's My Band? - #949, Hoyo de Monterrey Excalibur 1066 Dark Knight III Maduro. Suggested by listener Jay LeDou. January Palio Cutter Contest Winner: Craig Burcky from Wellington, Florida, won the black Palio Cutter. Enter the February contest now to win a silver Palio Cutter. Do you have a Herf Line Review? Listeners comment on what the show means to them in entries to the DWCR 300th Episode Contest and the winners to the contest are announced. Go to http://www.cigarmedia.tv/300th-episode-contest-entries/ for a complete list of the entries. * Bill Cartwright was the winner of a gift package including a box of Esencia Corona Gordas and an Esencia logo Palio cutter from Brother of the Leaf, LLC. * Carl Holtman was the winner of a box of La Aurora 107 Coronas from La Aurora Cigars, Miami Cigar & Company. * Bruce Berg was the winner of a 12-pack of New Havana Cigars Seleccion Limitada by Tatuaje (6 natural and 6 Reserva) and an etched Tatuaje Lotus Table Lighter from NewHavanaCigars.com. Bryan Newbury from Centro Cigars in Lawrence, Kansas is the guest on "What's Hot? What's Not? What's Next?" Bob interviews Dan Welsh of New Havana Cigars about the Cigar of the Week. Cigar of the Week - New Havana Cigars Seleccion Limitada Reserva Produced by Pete Johnson and rolled at the My Father Cigars factory in Esteli, Nicaragua, The NHC Seleccion Limitada is based on an original Tatuaje blend and available in both Natural and Reserva (Broadleaf) wrappers. The project came about as there were many boxes lingering at the factory, which were originally made for the tubos series in 2009. As luck has it, exactly 20 cigars at 6 3/4 x 42 fit in each side of the box with the tubos inserts removed. A short phone call and a few samples later and New Havana Cigars was on board for this project. (OK - they were on board even before the samples arrived, but after smoking them ... the excitement hit the roof) Deciding on two wrappers, the boxes contain 40 cigars, 20 Natural and 20 Reservas. The Reservas are made with a Broadleaf wrapper and the Natural with Habano. Both are the same blend, based on the original Tatuaje blend. About 500 boxes will be produced. Dark Side - Bolivar Corona Gigante - 7x47 (Julietta No. 2) What else have you been smokin' Dale? Montana Azul - The house blend from Blue Mountain cigars, this Cigar is also named after the factory it comes from in Esteli. The dark torpedo vitola I smoked is a Nicaraguan puro and delivered lots of creamy cedar flavor throughout. Touches of exotic spice and aromatic vanilla were prominent in the last half. Towards the end of the cigar a bit of astrigent nuttiness (walnuts) came on and finished off the experience nicely. Very good construction, a great draw and a delightfully smooth, creamy finish. PDR 1878 Cubano Especial - With an Arapiraca Maduro wrapper from Brazil, a Criollo '98 binder from the DR and a filler blend from Nicaragua and DR, this latest release from Abe Flores has the structure and depth to keep any cigar passionado in Nirvana! Lately I've smoked several of the 7.25" x 38 Lancero and just can't get enough of them. They are avail in 6 other traditional sizes, plus a 6" x 60 for those infatuated with this large size trend. Esteban Carreas Habano - What else have you been smokin' Bob? Gran Habano Corojo #5 Churchill - Made in Honduras with Costa Rican and Nicaraguan filler, Nicaraguan binder and a Nicaraguan wrapper. As you may recall, two weeks ago I listed the Habano #3 in this review and commented quite nicely about it. However, the #5 blend does not receive the same love. The blend, for me, was very strong and lacked any flavors other than strong tobacco making it an unpleasant smoke. Not to my liking. El Titan de Bronze Redemption Maduro - Gets better every time I smoke one. La Caridad del Cobre - Another blend out of Cuban Crafters made for our friend Frank Herrera this is is a fine polished smoke with lots of flavors but not harsh on the palate. H.Upman Sun Grown - A forgettable cigar that tastes like every other Sun Grown on the market. Light and airy with no spice and little else to make this cigar anything but forgettable. What else have you been smokin' Craig? Ashton La Aroma de Cuba Mi Amor - Loaded with savory flavors that dance on the tongue, this medium strength full bodied cigar is a can't miss. Samples smoked at and after the show are 100% identical to regular production. A little reminiscent to Pepin cigars from the past but much more elegant & refined. Lovely. Gran Habano Azteca - I loved this cigar at IPCPR. I did not love this cigar off the shelf. It is a shame that the production version of this performed as poorly as it did. 4 friends and I had a group review of the stick and all had similar thoughts, despite getting different flavors. The lovely sweet syrupy (almost Cola) tastes from the pre-production model were nearly all gone. The Mexican wrapper seemed flat & nearly flavorless which was so different from the originals. I hope this is just a product of being so close to manufacture date & not an indication of the line as a whole. Tatuaje Regio Reserva 2009 - In the spirit of the C.o.W. NHC Reserva, I lit this cigar up while reviewing entries for the 300th episode contest. While brimming with flavor & an overwhelming Connecticut Broadleaf cocoa taste, this cigar was outshone by its unbelievable construction. I'm not someone who focuses on aspects of a cigar other than taste very often but this cigar was constructed as perfectly as a cigar can be. Cap, draw, burn, ash, heft, band, durability. It had it all. What's My Band? - #938 from Liz; Illusione mk Petit Corona Herf Line Reviews: Martin Couch reviews the Bolivar Royal Coronas and Bill Featherston reviews the Gurkha Viper.
