On this week's SELECTED SHORTS, Meg Wolitzer presents three stories that offer unpredictable life lessons, from characters who are adolescent, and those who love them—a little eccentrically. In “The Facts of Life,” by Anthony Marra, a preteen learns about the birds and the bees from an icon of '90s masculinity. The reader is Santino Fontana. In “Leave Me in St. Louis,” by Tania James, sisters tap their way into a new life. The reader is Rita Wolf. Narrator Santino Fontana delivers Riley Sager's trademark psychological suspense. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Kendra Winchester discuss this twisty thriller that's a great slow-burn mystery with a touch of the paranormal. It's 1994, and 10-year-old Ethan and his best friend, Billy, camp out in Ethan's backyard. The night will tragically be remembered as the night Billy was taken from the tent while his best friend slept beside him. Thirty years later, Ethan reluctantly returns to his childhood home. Immersive storytelling helps listeners follow dual timelines. Fontana's expressive tone enhances the multiple points of view. Read our review of the audiobook at our website. What better way to celebrate summer than with a frozen cocktail of Disney Princess mania? It's 2013's Frozen, beloved by aspiring Elsas and Annas, reviled by parents and caretakers who threaten to lose it if they hear “Let it Go” one more time (trigger warning: you'll hear it in this episode). You'll also hear: Love is an Open Door: a catchy romance ballad that sets up deeper questions about true love – both in the Disney tradition and in a contemporary society where women and men are navigating complicated and often contradictory relationship patterns. Let It Go: the power ballad to end all power ballads. Winner of the Oscar for Best Song, it's the film's great moment of self-actualization and release. How do we read this moment theologically? What does Elsa represent? Fixer-Upper, Vuelie and Summer: a strong score that incorporates elements of the Broadway tradition, Sami folk singing, and some beautiful choral writing that establishes an otherworldly, mythical atmosphere for this contemporary parable. You'll hear Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell, Santino Fontana, Josh Gad and the rest of the cast from the 2013 soundtrack recording. Continue the conversation with us on Instagram (@gospelofmt).
Douglas J Cohen Doug received the 2010 Fred Ebb Award for Musical Theatre Songwriting and won two Richard Rodgers Awards for writing book, music, and lyrics for NO WAY TO TREAT A LADY (produced twice off-Broadway resulting in over 100 productions worldwide; an upcoming NY commercial production in-the-works through producer Larry Hirschhorn) and THE GIG (O'Neill National Music Theatre Conference, Manhattan Theatre Club Stage II, Goodspeed, York Theatre Company concert on CD and reading in conjunction with the Noël Coward Prize, and Sacramento Music Circus). Doug is the composer/lyricist of THE BIG TIME (book by Douglas Carter Beane) which debuted at the NYMF Festival; plans are underway for a Broadway-bound production. Nominated for a 2005 Drama Desk Award (Outstanding Lyrics, CHILDREN'S LETTERS TO GOD), he penned co-book, music, and lyrics for THE OPPOSITE OF SEX (Williamstown Theatre Festival) and received a Jonathan Larson Grant for composing BARNSTORMER, which has recently been optioned for New York by producer Lawrence Poster. Doug is the composer of GLIMMERGLASS (NAMT Conference 2000, readings through the Village Theatre and Melting Pot, productions at Goodspeed at Chester, Spirit of Broadway – Best Production of 2008) and A CHARLES DICKENS CHRISTMAS (produced by Theatreworks/USA and licensed through MTI). He also penned book and lyrics to VALENTINO'S TANGO (with music by Howard Marren, choreographed/directed by Chet Walker) and contributed original songs to JACKIE COLLINS' HOLLYWOOD LIES, and BOOZY (Robert Moses), the latter produced by Les Freres Corbusier and directed by Tony nominee Alex Timbers, which enjoyed runs at both the Ohio Theatre and Culture Project. His latest musicals are NINE WIVES with collaborator Dan Elish (which has been optioned by producers Larry Hirschhorn and Jayson Raitt and selected for the 2013 Goodspeed Festival of New Artists) HELEN OF TROY written with future West End lyricist/ playwright Zoe Samuel and workshopped at Coastal Carolina University, and BRIDGES, commissioned by The Berkeley Playhouse written with BARNSTORMER collaborator, Cheryl L. Davis. His new play, LOVELY SEND ANYWHERE, a finalist for the Laurents-Hatcher Award, has been developed at the Lark Play Development Center and received a reading in October 2012 starring Santino Fontana and Condola Rashad. A graduate of Amherst College, Doug recently joined the faculty of the Neighborhood Playhouse where he teaches the 2nd year students in song interpretation. He is a member of the Dramatists Guild, ASCAP, and the BMI Musical Theatre Workshop. How to Survive a Killer Musical: Agony and Ecstasy on the Road to Broadway When the young composer-lyricist Douglas Cohen first secured the musical rights to the novel No Way to Treat a Lady by William Goldman—the acclaimed author of The Princess Bride and Marathon Man—he hoped it would be his big break, the first step on a gilt path to artistic triumph and commercial success in the form of a hit Broadway musical. What happened after that, while memorable, was anything but. How to Survive a Killer Musical chronicles Cohen's decade-long quest to bring that musical to the stage—writing, re-writing, and shepherding it across the US and Europe amidst all manner of adversity and plain rotten luck. It's a fascinating portrait of passion, persistence, and resilience—a coming-of-age story populated with famous mentors and formidable adversaries, told with refreshing honesty and humor.
Jessica Fontana admits that her need to feel like she's in control impacts her journey in balancing her professional and personal life. Her passion for performing arts began with ballet, which eventually set the stage for her career in musical theater. While Jessica's mom highly supported her artistic endeavors, her father initially wasn't. She talks about her college experience at the University of Michigan and its role in shaping her career and changing her dad's mind. Married to fellow actor, Santino Fontana, she recalls how they met at Birdland Jazz Club, recounting how he left before they could get a drink together, only to friend her on Facebook later that night, slipping into her DMs. Jessica explained her shift from performing regularly to creating her album, "Every Day Special" – a transition that allowed her more control over her creative work and schedule, reflecting her desire for creative autonomy and finding joy and fun in whatever she does. Jessica Fontana is an actress, and the writer, host, co-creator, and co-executive producer of “Everyday Special”, an improvised satirical podcast. She has starred on Broadway in the title role of Rodgers and Hammerstein's “Cinderella”, “Baby It's You”, and “Pipe Dream” in New York City Center's Encores! Series. She's been seen in the hit web series “Submissions Only”, and has starred in the world premiere productions at regional theaters, including the Goodspeed Opera House, Paper Mill Playhouse, Signature Theater, and Carnegie Hall. Also a songwriter, she recently released her solo debut album, “Every Day Special”. It can be a challenge for even terrific actors like him to stay fresh and focused night after night. Here's how he does it: “I'll make up, you know, Gandhi is in the fourth row; do a great show.” Not madness, technique. And he's applied it from Hamlet to Tootsie. Produced with Red Bull Theater.

You can find tickets to that here: https://www.redbulltheater.com/your-own-thing And meanwhile, tune in today to hear some of the stories of his legendary career, including the three-page letter he received from Hal Prince, why RAGS couldn't succeed on Broadway, the art of performing as a mime, the inside story of THE WILD PARTY, the old-fashioned politeness of Eartha Kitt, why young writers are more reticent to cut material, the power of ALMOST, MAINE, the process of writing his new musical HERE YOU COME AGAIN, and so much more.
Meg Wolitzer presents a show about the theater, and those who love it. Rachel Klein's “Audience Instructions for Our Immersive/Experimental Theatre Production In An Abandoned Middle School In Bushwick,” read by Santino Fontana, sends up the avant-garde. In “Our Mutual (Theater) Friend,” by Amber Sparks, A retired diva just can't fit into ordinary life—and then, she's given an extraordinary gift. Krystina Alabado reads. Ann Petry's “Solo on the Drums,” read by Peter Francis James, captures a passionate performance. And Anton Chekhov offers up a theatrical power couple and their puzzling marriage in “He and She,” read by present-day theatrical power couple Hugh Dancy and Claire Danes.

This week I am joined by Hallmark Publisher author Stacey Agdern as we review Hallmark Channel's newest movie "Just One Kiss" starring Broadway stars Santino Fontana and Krysta Rodriguez. I don't think I have ever said this before, but this movie was mere perfection. Every part of this movie told a story. From the clothes to the makeup, the dialogue, the city. Everything was a perfect meld to tell the story of two people who have been unlucky in love. The singing, the black and white effect, the ghostly moms and the horrible exes all worked perfectly together to get the misfits Tony and Mia falling in love. From classic songs to classic literature, we watched the progression of their love story. There were laughter, tears and silent thoughtfulness. Chemistry was to the roof and Diversity was on point. Gave this movie 5/5 stars. Spring into Love movies 4/11 A Royal Romance Review 4/18 Love, Classified Review 4/25 A Tail of Love Review Every Thursday I will also be releasing When Calls the Heart episode reviews. We took a trip to "An Interesting Place", as we went to see Flying Over Sunset (twice!) and we're here to take you through the show with us, no flying necessary. So come take a listen as "The Music Plays On". Note: While we use snippets of the cast album in this episode, the album wasn't yet released when we recorded, so apologies for any inaccuracies, as we were working purely off of memory (without any enhancements). -- The entire saga of how Flying Over Sunset came to be is a pretty interesting story and you can read all about it in The New York Times. The set was one of the biggest aspects of the show (both literally and metaphorically), and you can check out pictures and read commentary from set designer Beowulf Boritt. In case you missed the joke about Greg in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, this video (starring Tony winner Santino Fontana) should give you some context. The Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square are featured in this merry episode about Christmas in our own backyard. We are local to Salt Lake City and enjoy a wide variety of Christmas culture. This includes the magnificent downtown venue of Temple Square, home to the Salt Lake Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Temple Square is famously decorated for Christmas and features one of the largest Christmas light displays in the world. It also has stunning Nativity displays and art. The several buildings house crowds of all sizes to accommodate performances from local artists and groups. The most famous of these groups is the Tabernacle Choir, who has called Temple Square home since the 1860s. They first performed in the still-standing Tabernacle, for which the Choir is named. In their history of touring and regular concerts no other activity by the Choir is as well known as their annual Christmas concert, which is featured on PBS in a nationally aired broadcast every holiday season. The Christmas concerts by the Tabernacle Choir feature the Orchestra at Temple Square, a hand bell choir, dancers and actors from local companies. Nearly all local performers are volunteers. It is a Choir custom to invite renown guest artists to perform each year. Past performers include Broadway stars Audra McDonald, Kristin Chenoweth, Angela Lansbury, Kelli O'Hara, Santino Fontana and Laura Osnes; R&B singer Gladys Knight; the late jazz singer Natalie Cole; pop singer David Archuleta; legendary newscasters Walter Cronkite and Tom Brokaw; historian David McCullough; the Muppets from “Sesame Street”; actors Jane Seymour, Hugh Bonneville, Richard Thomas, the late Ed Herrmann, John Rhys-Davies, Roma Downey, the late Peter Graves, Claire Bloom, Michael York and Martin Jarvis; opera stars Renée Fleming, Deborah Voigt, Frederica von Stade, Bryn Terfel, Nathan Gunn, Alfie Boe, Sissel, Rolando Villazón and four Metropolitan Opera soloists and the London-based a cappella group, The King's Singers. Collectively, the featured guests have garnered 34 Grammy Awards, 19 Tony Awards, 14 Emmy Awards, 10 Golden Globe Awards, three BAFTA Awards, one Academy Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award and an Olivier Award. These concerts are a massive effort. In this merry episode we speak with Scott Barrick of the Tabernacle Choir about everything that goes into getting these concerts produced. This episode features a healthy dose of Tabernacle Choir music and information about a new two-hour holiday special airing on PBS before Christmas. But that's not all. In this episode we also hear from two other artists performing on Temple Square - Allie Gardner, who with Wade Farr performs a haunting version of O Come O Come Emmanuel. That song is the oldest Christmas carol on record and we tell its fascinating backstory. We also share the incredible version of The First Noel performed last Christmas by Bryson and Tierra Jones, a must-hear tear-jerking arrangement of the classic Christmas song by Jared Pierce. We invite you to see more images and videos of the Tabernacle Choir and Christmas on Temple Square on our website at MyMerryChristmas.com Notes: Tabernacle Choir DVD - 20 Years with the Tabernacle Choir CD - Christmas Best - #1 on Billboard Book - Keepsake Christmas Stories: Holiday Stories as Performed with the Tabernacle Choir
Guest host Denis O'Hare presents a program that features great two-hander stories, each performed by a pair of actors that brings out the best in them. In “The Trip,” by Bruce Jay Friedman, a young man is mortified when his over-the-top mom decides to accompany him to his first day at college. Santino Fontana and Julie Halston have fun with this social nightmare. In Lorrie Moore's “Foes,” a world-weary liberal writer making a reluctant appearance at a charity dinner is seated with a rabid conservative. Kyle MacLachlan and Joan Allen skillfully navigate this delicate minefield. Guest host Kate Burton presents three Russian classics that reflect on the humor, humanism, and poetry of this great literary tradition, from an evening curated by Saunders. In addition to his award-winning short-story anthologies and novel, Saunders teaches at Syracuse University. In “After the Theatre,” by Anton Chekhov, a young girl writes imaginary love letters. The reader is Donna Lynne Champlin. “The Porcelain Doll” by Leo Tolstoy is based on a letter he wrote to his young sister-in-law—about his own wife! BD Wong is the reader. Fyodor Dostoevsky’s “Bobok” may remind some of Saunders’ own Lincoln in the Bardo. A dotty civil servant overhears the conversations of the dead, who are voiced by Becca Blackwell, Peter Jay Fernandez, Santino Fontana, Zach Grenier, Ann Harada, and Peter Mark Kendall. And a special treat follows “Bobok.” Anna Dzhanaeva and Luba Lapina, members of the Moscow English Literature Club, read excerpts from “After the Theatre” and “The Porcelain Doll” in Russian. We're taking a trip to West Covina this episode, as we talk about season 1 of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. So instead of having an in-person Group Hang, start up a Netflix Party and join us in discussing one of our favorite musical TV shows! For the most part spoiler-free, though we have a spoiler section starting from 29:17. -- All four seasons of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend are currently available on Netflix. You can watch all the music videos from the show (in their explicit versions) on Rachel Bloom's YouTube channel. And you can also see some of the possible inspirations and references in each musical number. Rachel Bloom's memoir, I Want to Be Where the Normal People Are, is out now and you can listen to an excerpt from the audiobook, where she sings from a script written about how she fell in love with musicals. Watch as Lin-Manuel Miranda joins Gabrielle Ruiz for a slightly modified version of "Women Gotta Stick Together". As mentioned by Cindy, see just how many people on the street would say yes to having sex with Paul Rudd. The song "Heavy Boobs" mentions just how many objects can fit under her boobs, and Rachel Bloom proves it to be true. For those that love Santino Fontana as much as we do, he can be seen in his upcoming "live" concert with Seth Rudetsky on February 21. -- Music featured in this episode: (Note that the albums linked here are the explicit versions, though clean versions exist as well.) While the audio production was surprisingly off at times, the story itself is a worthwhile addition to the series that manages to expand our view of Panem and the Hunger Games, while staying true to the beloved trilogy. The Tony favorite reflects on how his career was interrupted — and life jeopardized — by a 2010 head injury; how he fought his way back, only to walk away from 'Crazy Ex-Girlfriend' after just one season; and what he has learned from playing a woman in one of Broadway's biggest hits. Credits: Hosted by Scott Feinberg, recorded by Harley Yanoff and produced by Matthew Whitehurst and Joshua Farnham.

Chris and Mackenzie have made it to the (current) end of our exploration of the Disney animated canon! What do we call it? The Disney New Renaissance? The Disney Enlightenment? Whatever we call it, it’s good. Very good. Chris and Mackenzie use Bolt and Forzen to see what makes this time in Disney history so exceptional. How do you reinvent yourself? What does it mean to really focus on character transformations? How do you subvert expectations and yet payoff expectations? And the most important question: Can we work for Disney now? Episode two of season two. The double deuce. Luckily, this one isn't a stinker! Suzanne and Amber ping-pong through their analysis of episode 202, "When Will Josh See How Cool I Am?" Could Paula BE any more perfect as a princess with two sets of dumps? How did Hector become the truth speaker of the show? Can Josh ever keep a secret? How is Darryl spelling "separate?" Is there anything more vindictive than telling someone a Game of Thrones spoiler? Plus, we answer your questions, award our Giant Pretzels of the week and give our self-care recommendations for staying healthy and decidedly un-Bunch-like. SONGS: Maybe This Dream (Rachel Bloom, Jack Dolgen, Steven M. Gold and Adam Schlesinger, performed *TO PERFECTION* by Donna Lynne Champlin) Greg's Drinking Song (Rachel Bloom, Jack Dolgen, Steven M. Gold and Adam Schlesinger, performed by Santino Fontana) Ping Pong Girl (Rachel Bloom, Jack Dolgen, Steven M. Gold and Adam Schlesinger, performed by Vincent Rodriguez III) I Could If I Wanted To (Rachel Bloom, Jack Dolgen, Steven M. Gold and Adam Schlesinger, performed by Santino Fontana)
Special Episode #12: In anticipation of the upcoming release of the cast recording of Encores Off Center's production of God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater starring Santino Fontana, I bring you a podcast episode featuring Santino himself! I had the privilege of playing a small role in the show, so I got to watch Santino at work, and he is truly a brilliant artist. You'll hear me acknowledge him in this episode, and although it sounds like I'm praising a mere ability to memorize quickly (one of my pet peeve compliments), what I meant and didn't quite articulate was that he seemed to arrive at a full and complete performance, i.e. emotional depth, sense of humor, facility with the language and music, almost immediately with no ostensible effort. It was pretty amazing. And for the record, the name of the complicated song he nailed in the cast recording is “A Firestorm Consuming Indianapolis.”Rosewater aside, Santino has graced many a Broadway production, including Billy Elliot, Brighton Beach Memoirs, The Importance of Being Earnest, Cinderella, and Act One. Additionally, he is probably best known for his performance as Greg in the CW's Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and as the voice of Prince Hans in Disney's blockbuster film Frozen. But for me, first and foremost, he'll always be Aaron from the web series Submissions Only.In this episode, Santino sings “At Sea,” a song from the abandoned show Hashi, a piece on which I collaborated with Beth Blatt. Loosely based on the Pollyanna story, the young, recently orphaned boy Hashi has been sent to live with his Aunt Barb, a single, hardened New York City working woman. In this song, Barb's ex-boyfriend and upstairs neighbor Ben is back on a break from the cruiseline doctor job he accepted directly after their breakup. In a conversation with Hashi, Ben reflects on his choices over the past few years. (FYI, the sheet music and piano accompaniment track for "At Sea" have just been added to my online music store.)As for Santino, he is tireless! Here's what he has coming up:On July 21 and 22, he'll be performing in a concert with Laura Osnes and Ted Sperling in ChicagoOn July 28 he'll be doing a concert version of The Music Man with his wife, Jessica, in the PoconosFrom August 12-20, he'll be appearing on the Broadway on the Rhine River Playbill CruiseAlso look out for him in some upcoming episodes of Mozart in the Jungle, returning to play yet another title role, Mozart himself! This episode was recorded on April 20, 2017.
Rachel Bloom's CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND is a hilarious, smart, progressive and gripping show. It's also an amazing musical. In this episode, we talk about the compelling Breaking Bad-esque qualities of Rebecca Bunch as a lead character, our favourite songs, and how Santino Fontana's character subverts the acerbic-but-loveable male lead trope. It's a great show! Watch it, and let us know what you think at @TTYLshow on Twitter!
