This week, we discuss two films connected to Sherlock Holmes. The first is Zero Effect (1998), a mystery comedy film written and directed by Jake Kasdan in his feature directional debut. Starring Bill Pullman as "the world's most private detective", Daryl Zero, and Ben Stiller as his assistant Steve Arlo, the film's plot is loosely based on the Arthur Conan Doyle short story "A Scandal in Bohemia". The second is The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (1970), written and produced by Billy Wilder and I. A. L. Diamond, and directed by Wilder. Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, the creators and writers of the BAFTA and Emmy Award-winning series Sherlock, credited the film as a source of inspiration for their show.   Timestamps What we've been watching (00:00:55) – Vigil Season 2, Frozen, The Remains of the Day Zero Effect (00:19:55) The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (00:54:50) Coin toss (01:34:30)   Links Instagram - @callitfriendopodcast @munnywales @andyjayritchie   Letterboxd – @andycifpod @donnchadh   Justwatch.com – streaming and rental links - https://www.justwatch.com Christopher Lee's Life Is Way Cooler Than Yours - https://youtu.be/5yPsa4PGVhc?feature=shared

As we near the end of the millenium, a new influence takes hold of noir - Sundance-era American indies. Comedy, absurdism and heightened worlds begin to intersect with tales of crime and desperation. Our two films tonight both came out in 1998, and both show that influence. This week on Open Sources Guelph, we catch up with old friends. Dinner with friends has gotten the former U.S. President into trouble again, and being a little too quick with the proverbial hickory stick has made a lot of people in China mad at their president-for-life. Guess we'll just have to make some new friends, and that's what we do this week as we interview another one of Guelph's new councillors. This Thursday, December 1, at 5 pm, Scotty Hertz and Adam A. Donaldson will discuss: Yeezy Does It. On the weekend, Donald Trump entertained some diner guests at his fake-White House/country club in Florida, rapper Kayne West and his new friend the white supremacist hate monger Nick Fuentes. Naturally, Trump claims to have no idea how West and Fuentes ended up having dinner with him, but how will this further escalate the growing anti-Semitic sentiment in the U.S. and North America? The Zero Effect. A fire at a residential building in northwest China sparked a string of nation-wide protests not seen in the Xi Jinping era, and likely not seen since the Tiananmen Square uprising in 1989. Why? The "COVID Zero" policies that seem to have prevented firefighters from saving lives in the fire because after three years, the policy is as harsh as it ever was. How did China let their COVID fight go so wrong? Saved By Michele. As we continue our formal introduction to the new Guelph city councillors, we come around to Ward 3 and it's interesting to note that this ward replaced their outgoing female councillor with the one female candidate who was running in the ward? We will also Michele Richardson about those great expectations, the new realities of Bill 23 and what to expect at her first planning meeting next week. Open Sources is live on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca at 5 pm on Thursday.

ZERO EFFECT takes the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle short story "A Scandal in Bohemia" and updates it in a 1998 comedy slash mystery from Jake Kasdan which Sidey loves and I had never seen before. Bill Pullman is tortured soul Daryl Zero; the world's greatest private investigator and a recluse who will only be represented in public by his long-suffering assistant Arlo (Ben Stiller). Together, Zero and Arlo have solved some of the world's most bewildering criminal cases, including The Case Of The Man With Mismatched Shoelaces and The Case of the Hired Gun Who Made Too Many Mistakes. When wealthy businessman Gregory Stark (Ryan O Neal) hires the duo to find missing keys to a safety deposit box, Zero uncovers a secret involving Gloria Sullivan (Kim Dickens), a paramedic with a mysterious past, whilst also finding himself slowly falling in love with her. Both the Downey Jr. SHERLOCK movies left me cold and beyond KNIVES OUT I would be hard pressed to name anything in this genre that's raised even a semi out of me recently so I'm probably not the best to review this because beyond the excellent opening 40 minutes where we are introduced to Zero and his world, I found the movie to be meandering and sometimes predictable during the actual mystery. A huge lack of chemistry between Pullman and Dickens doesn't help and the ending seems somehow both abrupt and overly long at the same time though Sidey will point to all the stuff that's good about it: the off kilter neo-noir aspects, Bill Pullman's magnetic performance, the pulpy mystery and surprising denouement so if you are a fan of the Sherlock Holmes mythos or the crime mystery genre and haven't seen this, you should absolutely check it out.   We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. If it hasn't been completely destroyed yet you can usually find us on twitter @dads_film, on Facebook Bad Dads Film Review, on email at baddadsjsy@gmail.com or on our website baddadsfilm.com. ZERO EFFECT- A negative impact on your progress associated with inconsistency. Without consistency and persistence, it is difficult to maintain your momentum toward your goals. The impact of the Zero Effect comes from the exponential growth factor that consistency provides. If I do something every day, the first day I'll have some progress. If my starting point is at number 1, I'll be at some number greater than 1 (I call it “X” in the example below), whatever variable it is that I'm working on. Day 2, you get the exponential improvement, with that number X increased to the power of 2. You still get that exponential benefit on days 3, 4, 5, 6, and more, as long as you keep working on that sub-goal every day. What happens to people is that somewhere along the line, they think that their inspiration and persistent attitude are enough to keep going— and eventually, they forget. Their momentum is gone, due to what I call the zero effect. A comedian, actor, writer, director, producer, musician, magician, and Mensa level genius, Steve Martin is a man who has worn a number of hats throughout his fifty-plus year career but for the purposes of our conversation, we decided to zero in on Martin in the mid to late 1980s as he began embracing his career as an actor. From his supporting turn as a sadistic dentist in "Little Shop of Horrors" to his great ensemble studio comedies "Three Amigos!" and "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" to his surprisingly sweet, sexy, and sophisticated "Cyrano de Bergerac" adaptation "Roxanne," in this 52-minute discussion, Noah and I evaluate all sides of the Martin persona from the fully absurd to the downright horny. One of the world's most beloved entertainers you've heard discussed on Watch With Jen in past installments on David Mamet (for "The Spanish Prisoner"), Physical Media - Part 3 (for a new edition of "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles"), and '90s Romcoms (for "Father of the Bride") while this is our first episode dedicated to the actor, it's safe to say, it won't be our last.Originally Posted on Patreon (3/8/22) here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/63509809Logo: KateGabrielle.comTheme Music: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason Shaw, Free Music Archive

After watching 26 #NeoNoir films on #TheCriterionChannel Jim and Bill finally arrive at Part 5 of their journey. That's right, it's the final Neo Noir episode. Concluding this series of episodes, Jim and Bill first discuss Swoon, an interesting if somewhat dubious fit into the Neo Noir genre. Next Jim and Bill dive into John Dahl's 1993 sleeper hit, The Last Seduction, featuring a delicious (to put in Billy's words) performance by Linda Fiorentino.  With room to spare since Criterion left a big gap between 1994's The Last Seduction and their final entry, 2005's Rian Johnson Neo Noir, Brick, Jim and Bill provide several additional 90s Noirs you don't want to miss, including Zero Effect. Brick is the debut entry from Knive's Out's Rian Johnson, and it is an impressive debut to say the least. Johnson brings the Neo Noir detective world inside a high school setting, and there he utilizes all of the traits of the Noir genre and subverts them at every turn. Is it fun to watch high schoolers act as if they are inside a Raymond Chandler story? Yes. Yes it is.   Finally, a listener of the Neo Noir series suggested a new Neo Noir film as a pairing with Brick. 2020's The Kid Detective starring Adam Brody. Jim checked it out, and his take is it is a darkly comic Neo Noir that could very well be your next hidden gem.

Twenty years ago on January 30th 1998, two cinematic characters who value their estrangement from the world presented the good and evil aspects of this lifestyle. In a modern retelling of Charles Dickens' GREAT EXPECTATIONS, Anne Bancroft takes out her heartbreak on two children who will grow up to be Gwyneth Paltrow and Ethan Hawke, while the world's greatest detective in ZERO EFFECT mainly just annoys his partner, much to our amusement. Maybe its being forced to read the novel in high school but we obviously lean towards the more comedic study of detachment as presented by Bill Pullman and Ben Stiller in Jake Kasdan's forgotten gem, but then again there may be something to The Florida Cinematic Universe starring Chris Cooper. Twenty years ago today, Zero Effect was released in theaters. Ben Stiller & Bill Pullman gave wonderful performances and I spent all of my college years in love with Kim Dickens (something another reporter once told her at a roundtable to embarrass me). Back when I managed a family-owned video store, I used to recommend Zero Effect (directed by Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle's Jake Kasdan, btw) to customers so often that it made our 100 most-rented movies of the year -- IN 2006. We had to buy a bunch of extra copies. It was during that time that Zero Effect became my favorite movie of all time. Maybe not the BEST movie I have ever seen, but it's a great, fun, incredibly likable movie with some great, incredibly likable performances. In all those dozens/hundreds of recommendations to customers. I never once had anybody come back and say they didn't enjoy the movie. Five years ago, Chronological Snobbery did a really great job of looking back at Zero Effect's production. You can get a gorgeous (and fan-made) Zero Effect movie poster here. Zero Effect is available on DVD through the Warner Archive print-on-demand service. You can purchase it through third-party retailers like Amazon who will use the Warner Archive service to fulfill your order. You can also rent or buy it digitally. The film almost became a TV series. You can see the never-aired pilot, which starred Alan Cumming, here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBBaEijZwnY

Duncan and Bo turn their perceptive eyes toward two impressive detective films.  Duncan goes classic with Coppola’s The Conversation while Bo counters with the under-seen Zero Effect.  Can anything top Duncan’s classic from the 1970s?  Also, why is Duncan watching Adam Sandler movies?  And why does a ghost film turn into a time-travel move?  These questions and more answered on the latest Duncan and Bo Come Correct! The Cult Film Club is proud to cap off the Summer 2013 TAG Network crossover event by inviting our first guests, two awesome Classic Film Jerks, into the clubhouse to discuss the 1998 neo-noir flick Zero Effect!  We were graciously invited onto the CFJ show last week to discuss The Maltese Falcon, and so when we had Andrew and Michael in our place we figured what better way to bookend a look at classic noir than with one of our favorite cult mysteries.  Starring Bill Pullman, Ben Stiller, Kim Dickens and Ryan O’Neal, the film centers on Daryl Zero, who is by his own admission the greatest observer the world has ever known. One part objective observer, one part detective, one part master of disguise, one part deluded rock star, and a full on emotionally damaged, reclusive hermit, Zero (Pullman) is like a modern day Sherlock Holm-body, solving mysteries from inside his hermetically sealed apartment.  But his assistant, Steve Arlo (Stiller), has had enough, and for him the next case will be his last.  That case, the case of the missing tycoon's keys, proves to be much more complicated than either of them bargained for as they weave their way through a maze of blackmail, revenge, murder, and even a bit of romance. In the episode we talk about the idea of ditching "who don-its" for "why theydid-its", Pullman's magnetic and wacky charisma, being famous for marrying a poster model, and the all too certain comeback of the pager.  We take a closer look at the actors and then we all take turns recasting the flick for a more modern audience (and in one case retroactively for an 80s audience!)

Michael fell into film score composition by chance when The Greyboy Allstars were asked to score Jake Kasdan's first feature Zero Effect and worked on the music for the highly regarded (though short-lived) TV series, Freaks and Geeks.  In 2000, Richard Kelly commissioned Michael to do the soundtrack for the film Donnie Darko. Its original score album went on to sell over 100,000 copies (in part because of Michael's remake of Tears for Fears' song Mad World, featuring Gary Jules).  Michael has since gone on to compose scores for the movies Out Cold, Nothing, Cypher, Orange County, Me and You and Everyone We Know, The TV Set, a segment of Paris, je t'aime, Unaccompanied Minors, and Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. More recently, Michael has composed for: Funny People, Bridesmaids, The Five Year Engagement, Cyrus and Jeff Who Lives At Home for The Duplass Brothers, and the upcoming film, The Reluctant Fundamentalist for Mira Nair.
