A few weeks ago I spoke with the delightful Melisse Brunet who conducts the NEPA Philharmonic and Lexington Philharmonic and was featured in the documentary "Maestra" that follows a handful of women who were among the final 14 participants in the international La Maestra competition in Paris for female conductors. This week I have the pleasure of chatting with Maggie Contreras who directed this indie film. She shares what surprised her; she describes the dance of documentary making that includes observing and following subjects without interfering but knowing what sparks of light to follow and make bright. Maggie also talks about the importance of and opportunity you have to support indie filmmakers at Bingeable.net. Follow Maggie Contreras and Maestra Movie on Instagram. This week's guest had me feeling like a little girl. It's true I was fan-girling because I love all that is French. While I've had a love affair with all things French for many years--long before I even visited--it was genuinely easy to love Paris native Melisse Brunet after our wonderful conversation. She is fueled by her passion for music and her role as conductor. And she loves America, the place she has chosen to make her home. In fact, she became a citizen in February of 2024 and cannot say enough about the kindness she has experienced here. Melisse is the director of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic as well as the Lexington Philharmonic. She is also featured in the documentary Maestra that was executive produced by David Letterman. J'espère que vous apprécierez cette conversation autant que moi. Ecoutez!
