Welcome back to the IGNITE Your Dream Podcast!  I am so excited to share today's conversation with you with innovator + disruptivator, Leah McDermott! Leah is a former Master Educator turned radical unschooling advocate, and mama of three boys. She is the owner of Your Natural Learner and Bridge Academy, where she provides resources and community for natural learning and homeschoolers around the world. After years spent in the public school classrooms, Leah recognized the disconnect between what we know to be true about how learning happens and what we were doing to our children in the system. In 2011, after having her first child, she made the decision to step away from the public learning system and began her work in encouraging and supporting homeschooling families to raise a new generation of confident and passionate lifelong learners, and today focuses on helping parents shift their mindset to trust that their children are capable of learning what they need when they need it. In today's episode we dive deep into what it means to "unschool," the challenges our children face within the current school system and what can happen when we trust our children's natural learning instincts over society's current models.  I hope this conversation serves as an invation to expand + shift your perspective if you feel called to do so. And in addition, with collaboration with Dr. Paul Marik, Dr. Kory pioneered the research and treatment of septic shock patients with high doses of intravenous ascorbic acid. Known as a Master Educator, Dr. Kory has won numerous departmental and divisional teaching awards in every hospital he has worked and has delivered hundreds of courses and invited lectures throughout his career nationally and internationally. Welcome to the Flow and Flourish Podcast. This is what I like to call a “sister-friend” community, which is the safe space to talk openly and honestly about the challenges we face while managing the competing priorities between our personal and professional lives. Many of us are either in corporate, an entrepreneur of a combination of the two, on top of being moms, wives, caregivers, big sister's or just the go-to person in our circles of friends and families. Having all that responsibility can leave you overwhelmed and depleted if you don't take inventory of where you're at on a regular basis. As an entrepreneur, have you ever heard, if you build it they will come? Welllll… it kinda works like that, but there's a whole lot more that goes into it. What “they” don't tell you is about the blood, sweat and tears that go into building a business and pursuing purpose… it ain't' easy! In today's episode, I talk with multi-business owner, Leandra Roche. With over 25 years in the Beauty Industry, Leandra has been promoting, and advocating for healthy hair as a way of life. As a Licensed Cosmetology Instructor, Cosmetologist and Salon owner for over 20 years, she has serviced and dedicated her time to thousands of clients and many budding entrepreneurs. Not only does Leandra have extraordinary skills in Professional Hair Styling, she also is a Master Educator of Cosmetology, an entrepreneur trailblazer and Team Leader like no other. Training others to do the same is her passion, which led to the creation of her hands-on educational and training course, The Salon Readiness Program. It's aimed at helping those who want to get in the salon ownership business to be successful and have access to more than just doing hair.   Additionally, Leadra is the creator of the annual networking conference "The Dreamers Conference", which has been around for 6, going on 7 years, and is an event that educates and assists entrepreneurs with the necessary tools and resources to help them to succeed in business. In this amazing episode, Leandra shares with us how to go from triage to triumph in our personal and professional lives: How to go from Triage to Triumph   Practice self awareness   Speak life at all times   Reinvent Pursue After you've listened, I invite you to connect with us on social media. I love to hear how this is helping you, so make sure you tag me on Facebook or Instagram with your favorite takeaway from the episode. As a Capacity Coach, my philosophy is that when you flow effortlessly, you flourish tremendously. And when you do, it allows you to show up in excellence in all the areas of your life. Because I've been in your shoes, I am excited to be your guide on this journey. Nothing happens by mistake and meeting Brandi Frazier is an example of that. I actually met Brandi because she was my neighbor and we were both pregnant at the same time. But as I grew to know Brandi better, I learned that not only is she an amazing mama, but she's also a total boss. Today, she joins the She Sells community and is empowering us to advocate for ourselves even if we are not feeling confident yet.   Brandi Frazier is a Mama, Wife, Speaker, and Master Educator who is passionate about empowering women in all areas of life. Brandi has spent many years as an innovative business sales and leadership expert who has diligently worked to create more engaging and results-driven organizations. After many years of training executives, managing teams, and speaking in corporate America, Brandi found a new passion, a new purpose, and a new why: Bee Empowered Mama. Bee Empowered Mama provides community, onsite training, coaching, workshops, and educational content for all things motherhood and in the workplace for women. Bee Empowered Mama also specializes in teaching women how to advocate for themselves during pregnancy, postpartum, and beyond.   In this energetic episode, Brandi inspires us with her personal stories that sparked her new why and how advocating for herself literally saved her life. She is a powerful speaker that will have you hooked on every word and you'll be listening to this over and over again to get you pumped up and feeling confident to be the expert of you. Show Notes: [3:04] - Welcome to the show, Brandi! Elyse and Brandi reflect on how they met. [3:58] - Brandi describes her background in sales and how her bubbly personality led to her discovering her love for it. [5:01] - As time went on, Brandi found herself in corporate training, speaking, and international teams training. [6:36] - Brandi was motivated to go hard so she could slow down and enjoy her pregnancy. Covid certainly changed things for her as well. [7:53] - In any scenario in your life, if you feel that you are not being treated the best you possibly can be, you should leave. [8:32] - Brandi learned through her pregnancy that she needed to advocate for herself. [10:04] - Because she knew she is the expert of her own body, Brandi explained why she monitored her blood pressure and how she continued to advocate for herself. [11:40] - As a result of using her voice and knowing her body, Brandi learned she could have died. [13:10] - After her experience, Brandi used her knowledge from her career to teach other moms how to advocate for themselves with Bee Empowered Mama. [14:26] - Trust how you feel because you are the expert of yourself. [16:01] - In the workplace, authority figures make some people feel less confident. [18:11] - While this confidence and advocating for herself is inherent to Brandi, it isn't for everyone. Build confidence with positive affirmations. [19:10] - Seek the company of other confident people. [20:58] - Fake it until you make it and then you will become it. [23:01] - Pick who you want to be. In this episode, Nikou speaks to Michael Huey about gut health, sleep, nutrigenomics and bio-hacking. All of this makes Michael the perfect guest for the Failing Forward Podcast. However, they get onto their relationships with God, spirituality, fitness and mindfulness meaning that there will have to be a part 2 in the near future. KEY TAKEAWAYS 70% of how we function is through what we put in our mouths, I just missed qualifying for the Olympic finals in 1996 and three of my team-mates made the Olympic team, which is very rare from a single college. I realised that there was going to be a shift in the role nutrition plays in performance. So, I switched my drive from athletics to serving – reading in the bible how God wanted us to take care of our ‘temple’. It’s physical first, spiritual second. Without taking care of fitness first I can’t serve well and I’m setting an example. I believe a lot of people’s physical health problems are spiritual. Makes sure you have no co-dependant relationships, they’re toxic. Self-examine your relationships from time to time. You make better decisions when you’re in alignment with God’s plan and purpose for your life than making emotional decisions, like bringing someone into your business because they talk a good talk but could be a liar or narcissist. The Devil will always try and defeat you in your mind, your will and your emotions because he knows he can tug at them. But, when you have a real experience with God nobody can negate that experience. I want to be a person that doesn’t judge people, that forgives, that walks in unity and oneness. But, I also want to be the person that stands up and is held accountable to the bible, not to man and what man thinks. If I deny him before man he’ll deny me before the father. You have to be intentional in every area of your life. Men don’t have best friends. 1 in 10 men have a friend they feel comfortable sharing life stuff with and 1 in 20 have a best friend. To me, that’s scary. I don’t want to have somebody who will encourage me but someone who will correct me. I think a lot of us gravitate towards people that tell us what we want to hear nit what we need to hear. But never correct without encouragement. You need to get rid of people in your life who are constantly negative and surround yourself with people who encourage you, sharpen you, makes you better in every area of your life, sets an example for you. Look for people that are good in the area where you’re struggling and learn from them. Your identity is not in your failures, it’s in who you are and who God created you to be minus the shame, minus the guilt, minus self-doubt. The difference between wisdom and knowledge is taking action on what you’ve learned. I could be depressed or have anxiety if I wanted, but I choose to be in the present. I can’t control what I can’t control. I control what I can control and leave the rest up to God. Turn your mess into a message. BEST MOMENTS ‘My identity is in the one who created me, not the letters before or after my name.’ ‘You were bought at a price, therefore honour your bodies.’ ‘Don’t sweat the small stuff, let these things go.’ ‘Pray for hope and have faith.’ ABOUT THE GUEST Michael was born in Lancaster, Ohio where he attended Ohio State University as a four-year letterman of Track and Field where he earned a degree in Nutrition, Exercise Science and Sports Management.
