A lot of listeners worry that jazz has ossified in the last, say, fifty years or so, but Mike decides to do something about it, terminological speaking, anyway.  So this fortnight's episode explores the difference between curating a tradition and trying to create something new within it. Our test subjects comprise three brand-new releases (two instrumental, one vocal) and a vocal album from the nineties paying tribute to the Prince of Darkness himself, Miles Davis.  Curtis Taylor – TAYLOR MADE; Brandon Goldberg– LIVE AT DIZZY'S; April Varner – APRIL; Shirley Horn – I REMEMBER MILES.

"I didn't want to do any middle level teaching because of behavior, but I ended up teaching eight years at Patrick Henry Junior High. I loved every moment of it. I learned that if the kids loved and trusted you, they would do anything for you. It was just so much fun to take what they were willing to give and do some good work with them. It all translated into how they behaved in choir."Cathleen Britton has been making music her entire life. She grew up in Aberdeen, South Dakota, and then studied music at The University of South Dakota, where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master's Degree in Music Education. Britton has spent her career largely in Sioux Falls directing middle and high school vocal music programs. Her concert choirs have been selected repeatedly to perform at regional conventions, college music festivals and even at Carnegie Hall. Show choirs directed by Britton have received top awards at competitions in a multi‐state area. Outside school, Britton directed the Asbury Methodist Adult Choir for 15 years and was vocal conductor at the Augustana Summer Music Camp. She has served as Clinician and Festival Conductor at numerous conventions and competitions throughout the state and region. She traveled to Muscat, Oman as a festival conductor for the TAISM Festival of Choirs.Britton has fostered the growth of vocal music programs through her work in the American Choral Directors' Association where she has served as Repertory and Standards Chairperson for Vocal Jazz and Show Choir, Publicity Chair, and Convention Clinician for the North Central Division of the ACDA. She also held the office of State President of the South Dakota Chapter of ACDA. In 1996, Britton received the Encore Award for excellence and achievement in choral music and in 2008 was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award by her peers in the American Choral Directors' Association‐South Dakota Chapter. Setting The Standard: Stories From The Great American Songbook

“Over the Rainbow”, “Get Happy”, “Come Rain or Come Shine”. These are the songs you have been singing your whole life, and now is your chance to learn about who wrote them! In this week's episode, travel somewhere over the rainbow into the singular mind of renowned composer Harold Arlen, a key contributor to the American Songbook whose hundreds of pop tunes became runaway hits during the 1930s, ‘40s, and ‘50s. Arlen collaborated with the greatest of the Tin Pan Alley lyricists, including E.Y. "Yip" Harburg, Johnny Mercer, Ted Koehler, Ira Gershwin, Dorothy Fields, and Truman Capote. While any number of Arlen's compositions assured his prominent place in musical history, the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) deemed “Over the Rainbow” to be the 20th century's greatest song. Setting The Standard: Stories From The Great American Songbook

“I Got Rhythm”, “Summertime”, “The Man I Love”. These are the songs you have been singing your whole life, and now is your chance to learn about who wrote them! In this week's episode, the men you love are at the forefront: George and Ira Gershwin, brothers who sometimes seemed to write their hits with four hands and one brain. George's gift for melody and Ira's ability to seamlessly blend lyrical sophistication with the American vernacular made for a plethora of immortal songs that both reflected and shaped the dynamic forces of American modernism during the Jazz Age. Hear directly from Michael Feinstein, Norm Lewis, and more, as they guide you through the astounding lives of these two geniuses, cut from the same cloth.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

“You're the Top”, “I've Got You Under My Skin”, “Love for Sale”. These are the songs you have been singing your whole life, and now is your chance to learn about who wrote them! In this week's episode, you'll fall freely in love with Cole Porter, the master of melody and lyrics who changed the soundscape and language of American music - and America itself. Writing songs for over 30 stage and film musicals, his best work set standards of sophistication and wit seldom matched in the popular musical theater. And, as explained by pioneering songwriter Justin Tranter, Porter blazed the trail for generations of queer writers to come, pushing boundaries and challenging the status quo of the American musical form. Featuring key interviews from acclaimed writer Adam Gopnik and musical icon Elvis Costello, this episode illuminates the magic of Cole Porter.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Setting The Standard: Stories From The Great American Songbook

“Wouldn't It Be Loverly”, “Get Me to the Church on Time”, “If Ever I Would Leave You”. These are the songs you have been singing your whole life, and now is your chance to learn about who wrote them! This week's episode is guaranteed to be “loverly”, as we dive headfirst into the life and times of Alan Jay Lerner & Frederick Loewe, one of the greatest songwriting teams in history responsible for the most stylish, sophisticated theater music of the 20th century. The Lerner-Loewe formula was to combine Loewe's lush, melodic music, redolent of Viennese waltz, with Lerner's witty, literate lyrics; this they did in some of the most popular and best-remembered musicals of the mid-20th Century, including My Fair Lady, Brigadoon, and Camelot. As told by scholars such as Laurence Maslon as well as Liza Lerner, Alan Lerner's daughter, the origin story of Lerner & Loewe illuminates how their disparate paths converged to form a dynamic duo that would define the future of American musical theater. "Going Pop" can mean many different things where jazz musicians are concerned, from adding electricity (dang it, Miles, why you do that?), to covering pop songs, to actually experimenting with writing pop songs (not too many take this path and few emerge unscathed).  And then there's rare jazzer combining jazz and pop songs, as you'll soon find out.   This time out we look at approaches all over the spectrum, ending with a vocal album Mike has already pegged as an album of the year contender.  Cecile McLoren – GHOST SONG; John Pizzarelli – DOUBLE EXPOSURE; Reuben Wilson – LOVE BUG; Bill O'Connell – A CHANGE IS GONNA COME.

She describes how being the firstborn of five kids spurred her to be an independent forward-thinker who follows her gut--even when her gut leads her down paths that a lot of her peers aren't traveling yet. We talk about her college experience studying Vocal Jazz at the University of North Texas, and what led her to move back to New Jersey shortly after graduation to get married and start a family. We also discuss the challenges of balancing a career as a musician with parenthood, as well as her recent experience with postpartum depression and the wisdom she's gleaned from the early years of motherhood. I recently visited my alma mater, Carson High School, where the Drama department presented Disney's "Beauty and the Beast." It was a great closing performance and I met some of the cast, members of the production team, and other wonderful people. I spoke with Director Marcia Barryte, and it is evident, through her dedication and passionate efforts, she helped put Carson High School back on the map with a much-needed Performing and Media Academy program. With the help and support of the parent volunteers, Principal, Dr. Windy Warren, and Los Angeles Unified School District Senior Executive Director of Arts in Education, Dr. Rory Pullens, the program continues to flourish and produce quality shows. More importantly, it has sparked the interests of many students, many who have never performed before, but who have discovered a newfound love for theater arts. Choreographer Ray Garcia (original Tony Award-winning Broadway musical "Rent") and Vocal Director Jolly Rodriguez talked about watching the students grow from Day 1, reflecting on how much they have improved and flourished, and more importantly, how much the program has boosted confidence levels. Theater Arts also promotes the importance of academics. As with any curricular activity, students must maintain a certain GPA in order to participate, therefore education is clearly the number one priority at Carson High School. I am proud of Carson High School! It was here I began my musical theater career starring as Kim McAfee in "Bye Bye Birdie" and Daisy Mae in "Li'l Abner." I was also involved in Vocal Jazz, a small vocal group that performed in several programs and participated in competitions. I am especially proud to have been a part of a reputable sisterhood called the "Bannergirls," a 12-member auxiliary squad who carried the shiny "CARSON" sign proudly at parades and performed at all football games during pre- and halftime shows. Together with the entire Carson High School Blue Thunder Marching Band and Auxiliary Units, we competed and won championships in regional and statewide competitions. Returning to the campus to watch the closing performance of "Beauty and the Beast" brought back wonderful memories of my time at Carson High School. They were some of the best years of my life. Without the arts and music programs, I wouldn't have made lifelong friends. I likely would not have pursued my passion and love for musical theater in college and thereafter. It goes without saying how truly important the Performing Arts and Media Academy at Carson High School is necessary and valuable in helping to transform lives! Please support the arts! Every week thousands of songs are released to radio, on streaming platforms, on digital stores, on social media, mixtapes, & CD albums. It would be impossible for the average musick lover to absorb this & sift through them -- That's why you have me. I'm Jakob Musick, & I was meant for this. You could say it's in my blood, or genes. Or Whatever. Today, I'm going to be highlighting a few great songs as well as one terrible one in a variety of genres - Hip-hop, Electropop, Vocal Jazz, Soul-- Though today's show is mostly Pop. It is fascinating to look at how many disperate releases are actually products of the same conglomerates. French mega-corporation Vivendi is responsible for 1, 3, 4, & 7 (Pop, Hip-Hop, & Jazz!). Oftentimes the differents parts of the same giant organization might not even be aware of each other's existence. Regarding no. 1 , I believe Justin Timberlake's vocal from the original "Where Is The Love" was utilizes, & I distinctly believe I heard some Mary J. & Usher in the background vocals of the song. However, I have no seen any official confirmation of this. Today! 1. #WHEREISTHELOVE - Black Eyed Peas, The World, Nas, Mary J. Blige(?), Usher(?), Justin Timberlake (?) - Pop - Interscope (Vivendi) 2. The Great Divide - Rebecca Black - Pop - Self-released 3. Sauce - Game - Hip-Hop - The Black Wall Street (Vivendi) 4. Hard Girls - KT Tunstall - Pop - Jaydone (Vivendi) 5. I Was Wrong (PANG Remix) - A r i z o n a - Electropop - Warner Music Group 6. Human - Bebe Rexha - Pop - Warner Music Group 7. Soul Eyes - Kandace Springs, Terence Blanchard - Vocal Jazz - Blue Note (Vivendi) 8. I Hate Donald Trump - Emilio Rojas - Hip-Hop - Same Plate Worst. Epitome Of Beauty - Charice - Pop - Star Recordings (ABS-CBS) Best. We apologize for the archived show quality- Blogtalkradio.com was experiencing technical difficulties which prevented us from talking to callers because our switchboard was not operating correctly. On this special 90-minute show, Grammy nominated vocalist and scat singer extraordinare Janet Lawson was our guest! Janet Lawson is widely recognized for her impeccable musicianship and free-spirited, swinging improvisation. Her commitment to improvisation, the essence of jazz, and her later studies with tenor sax master Warne Marsh nourished her conception of the voice as an instrument. She has appeared with, among other jazz greats, Duke Ellington, Tommy Flanagan, Joe Newman, Barney Kessel, Milt Hinton, Ron Carter, Barry Harris, Dave Liebman, David and Lida Baker, Rufus Reid, Clark Terry, Billy Hart, Eddie Jefferson, Cedar Walton, Billy Higgins and Bob Dorough. Janet is co-founder of the Vocal Jazz program at The New School in NYC, where she is currently an Adjunct Professor. Lawson is also a member of the performing faculty of The International Music Camp for Young Latvian Musicians in Latvia. The vocal jazz degree programs she developed as a result of that association are now offered throughout Latvia. Her album, The Janet Lawson Quintet, earned her a Grammy nomination. (The winner of the Grammy in the same category that year was Ella Fitzgerald!) She also appeared on Eddie Jefferson's album, "The Main Man."
