Play Episode Listen Later Apr 19, 2025 15:47

Graves to Gardens Podcast is back with a new season and a slightly new format! Unlike past seasons where there's a new topic with each new episode, this season will have a concentrated topic and you will hear from a few experts and their connected community partners on the topic. The entire season 6 will be all about addressing youth incarceration, primarily looking at alternative approaches to incarceration and the advocacy that goes into stopping a young person from winding up in an adult facility. Leading the series will be two Philadelphia based nonprofits, Healing Futures (a vital arm of the larger organization, vital arm of the organization Youth Arts and Self Empowerment Project or YASP for short) as well as the Youth Sentencing and Reentry Project. Today's episode is to serve as an introduction to the season, give you context on why I've titled this episode "Planted in Praise, Planted in Purpose" and what to expect from next Thursday's episode. Below are a few key words that we'll discuss more throughout this season that I'd like you to have definitions for:Restorative justice: A response to wrongdoing that prioritizes repairing harm and recognizes that maintaining positive relationships with others is a core human need. It seeks to address the root causes of crime, even to the point of transforming unjust systems and structures.Healing circle: Deriving from practices of Native Americans, First Nations, and indigenous peoples, the Circle Process allows for the formation of relationships, the honoring of voices, and the creation of unity. The process is, at its essence, a story sharing process, which brings together people as equals to have open exchanges about difficult issues or painful experiences in an atmosphere of respect and concern for everyone.Direct file: A category of cases in which the prosecutor may determine whether to proceed initially in juvenile or criminal court. Typically, these direct file provisions give both juvenile and adult criminal courts the power to hear cases involving certain offenses or age/offense categories, leaving it up to the prosecutor to make discretionary decisions about where to file them.Today's episode features clips published by two news outlets. Both are linked below:Clip 1 -- 4 minutes and 30 seconds inClip 2 & 3 -- 10 minutes and 40 seconds in & 13 minutes and 30 seconds in2 Samuel 6:13-1513 When those who were carrying the ark of the Lord had taken six steps, he sacrificed a bull and a fattened calf. 14 Wearing a linen ephod, David was dancing before the Lord with all his might, 15 while he and all Israel were bringing up the ark of the Lord with shouts and the sound of trumpets.InstagramWebsite

In honor of Women and Girls Empowerment Day, which falls later this month, I'm excited to bring to you a conversation I had with Founder and Director of the nonprofit Silent Cry, Shawanna Vaughn. This episode comes at the most opportune time because today is the day that Shawanna's nonprofit will host their Women and Girls Empowerment Day in NYC! At a time where the state of women's rights are in precarious position, Shawanna felt it necessary to bring women together to grant them respite from the realities that lie ahead. At this gathering women and girls will get a chance to indulge in a number of self care activities from crafting their own jewelry to creating vision boards and even receiving access to legal and housing resources. Shawanna imagined this as an opportunity for women and girls alike to relax, enjoy the company of one another and come away feeling more empowered after having shown up. In today's episode, Shawanna and I discuss today's event, her story and vision for the future of justice work. From the policy she crafted called the Post Traumatic Prison Disorder to her adamant advocacy for us all to stand behind VP Harris in this upcoming election. To support Shawanna and her work, you can visit her website here and either donate to support the passing of the legislation she crafted or to support the immediate needs of women by purchasing items from her Amazon wishlist. You can also stay up-to-date with her by following her on Instagram. For anyone interested in stopping by the Women and Girls Empowerment Day, it will be taking place at 147 St. Nicholas Avenue, New York, NY 10026 from 3pm-6pm. All are welcome! You may have heard it said love your neighbor. This Gospel truth is one that we'll dive into in a very specific way. First let's start with the Gospel, it simply means good news. And the good news we're exploring today is a Christ-centered understanding of the work that we've all been tied to. We'll learn about Christ's heart for the issue of incarcerated and our call as followers and believers of Christ to show up for those that are systems impacted. Best of all it will be made practical. And to usher us into this incredible series that I'm excited to begin with is Pastor Reverend Khalil James of Mount Zion AME church and Reverend Isaac I. Scott, Executive Director of the Confined Arts. Learn about how the arts has served in a unique way to furthering their church's prison ministry. To stay connected with Pastor James and Reverend Scott you can visit Mount Zion AME in-person or online. That way you can get connected to their many ministries that they offer! Isaiah 61:1 The Year of the Lord's Favor The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; Luke 4:18-21 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, 19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. 20 And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears. Instagram Website

We are in the final hours to help save the life of a man on death row in Texas. His name is Jedidiah Murphy and I am urgently asking you to show up for him. The title of today's episode comes from a poem Jedidiah wrote which you can find here, along with the other poem (Untitled) referenced in today's episode and a brief bio written by Jedidiah himself. A man who we now know has diagnosed Dissociative Identity Disorder is scheduled to be executed on both the 21st World Day Against the Death Penalty and World Mental Health Day. While I was unable to speak with Jedidiah himself, I did speak with Cantor Mike Zoosman, the co-founder of L'chaim! A Jewish Anti-Death Penalty Group. As well as Abraham Bonowitz, the co-founder of Death Penalty Action, a nationwide organization that works to stop executions and abolish the death penalty. Both men shared how they went from supporters of state sanctioned executions via the death penalty to how they are now leaders in this work to abolish the use of death penalty across the country. And for today's episode both come together to raise awareness to the story of Jedidiah Murphy who will be executed in Texas on October 10th if he is not granted a stay of execution. As my call to action, I ask that you first join me in others in continuing to lift Jedidiah up in prayer. You can also call Texas Governor Abbott's office and urge him to halt the execution of Jedidiah at 512-463-1782. Finally, you can read up on Jedidiah's story and learn more about his journey to repentance here, here and again here. Psalm 42:5 Why, my soul are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? In the final installment of this Black August series I had the honor of sitting down with professor for the department of Ethnic and Race Studies at CUNY's BMCC, Harvard alumni and New York State Democratic District Leader for the 80th Assembly District, Remysell Salas. I was introduced Remy through Instagram paged Letters to Keith, an account dedicated to former podcast guest Keith LaMar. What struck me were the words he choose to sign off his letter - With much Faith. Curious to know more about his connection to Keith and the inspiration behind those three words planted a seed for this conversation you'll listen to today; a fruitful conversation on collective liberation, the dismantling of division and the need for more grace. The best way to find out all that Remy is up to is by checking out his Linktree and you can connect with him on LinkedIn. I've also linked the Dominican Studies Book Club which he also shares on his Linktree as well as his Masters Thesis and some of his writings! Finally, I want to leave you with my call to action which is to study and meditate on the below verses as you prepare to join in or even continue along in this fight for collective freedom and liberation. The aim is to struggle for a positive, equitable and more inclusive world for us all that centers the need of others and like Remy said extends more grace to our brothers and sisters as we navigate life. I can share a hundred Bible verses that can center your thinking on why this work is so important however, I'm going to leave you with just two. My hope is that by studying and meditating on these two verses you'll find just how the Lord is challenging you to show up in the world as a beacon of light. Judges 6:14 "The Lord turned to him and said, “Go in the strength you have and save Israel out of Midian's hand. Am I not sending you?” Joshua 1:9 "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. What does it mean to celebrate freedom when all of us are not and may not ever experience this freedom that we speak of. The search for freedom is a physical, emotional, and spiritual endeavor that all too often is barricaded by a system that calls itself just. For the final episode of the season, I urge each one of you to listen, learn from and get involved with advocating for Keith LaMar's exoneration. As we many of us gather in celebration over Juneteenth, there is a man, like many who came before him and many who will come after, that awaits execution by the State of Ohio for a crime he did not commit. In today's episode you'll hear Keith call in from death row to share his truth and the dissonance between that reality and the one that the state would have you believe. In an effort for justice Keith reasoned with himself that he must tell his story to not only save himself but for those who will come after him. Along the way he has made many dear friends, one of which you'll meet today - Samora Pinderhughes. Samora is a brilliant musician whose talent was matched by the brilliance of Keith who too has an ear and a deep love for music. What blossomed from their meeting was intentional collaboration on Samora's 5-year long project, The Healing Project, in which Keith is now part of. This isn't an episode just focused on the atrocities surrounding Keith's case and current predicament; this is meant to showcase the wonderful harmony that is birthed when one companion on the outside and another on the inside step into each other's world and came together to create art. This episode is a celebration of artists, a recognition of the humanity of both artists in today's discussion and an appreciation for their contributions to the world of justice and music. You can also follow him on Instagram here. Finally, I want to remind you of the scripture verse that we've been meditating on the last few episodes. The verse comes from Zechariah 9:12 (NLT) which reads, “Come back to the place of safety, all you prisoners who still have hope! I promise this very day that I will repay two blessings for each of your troubles.” I believe this verse paints a powerful picture of restoration and holding out for promised blessings even in the face of adversity.
