I'd say the best kind of food is the kind that changes you. At Down North Pizza they are hard at work changing perceptions and the narrative about people impacted by the carceral system while broadening the scope of what it looks like to make an impact in the approaches to addressing this systemic issue. Today I bring you the season 5 opener with a conversation between myself and the founder and owner of Down North Pizza, Muhammad Abdul-Hadi. Learn about the strides this Philly pizzeria has made in combating recidivism, providing opportunities for community restoration and building an even greater network through their foundation, Down North Foundation which is set to have its benefit dinner next Thursday, April 11th. Click to learn more about Down North Pizza, to follow the Foundation on IG and to learn more about the Foundation's benefit dinner. Parents of learners from Masamane Primary School outside Mahikeng in the North West, have closed the school citing several issues which include unhygienic toilets and poor quality drinking water. The parent accuse the provincial education department of neglecting their pleas on fixing the school before the start of the school term today. One of the parents says following engagements with the department late last year, nothing has been done to address their challenges.
So here was Muhammad Abdul-Hadi's idea for a pizza joint: First, buy a building in one of the most troubled neighborhoods in one of the poorest big cities in the country. Open a restaurant despite having no experience in the food industry and do it during the pandemic when many restaurants are failing. And hire only people who, like Abdul-Hadi, are convicted felons. If that business plan sounds a little dicey to you, rest assured you would not be the first to suggest that to Abdul-Hadi. But he did it anyway. He built out the restaurant, and it opened in 2020 to lines that required people to wait as long as three hours for their pizza—thanks in part to a marketing plan that created excitement and scarcity by “dropping” pizzas the way some people “drop” special-edition sneakers. And now, Down North Pizza, which has been featured on best-of lists in national publications like Bon Appetit and The New York Times, is looking to expand. A special, year-end bonus episode.

Continuing on with our guest series on the real estate market, we've got Nicole Noyola! We had a blast talking real estate, cocktails, and politics (a little). Enjoy!
During our first segment, we spoke with Chef Tonii Hicks, who is currently participating in Garces Group's Chef in Residency program inside Volver. Chef Hicks is utilizing her Chef in Residency to raise funds to purchase a large building in West Philadelphia. Tonii's ultimate goal is to open a multi-level work space, with each level dedicated towards an independent purpose. In creating this multi-level workspace, she envisions a place where businesses; startups; restaurateurs and artists can collaborate together on projects. Through Garces Group's Chef in Residency Program, which highlights rising stars and offers Chefs a platform to raise monies towards whatever initiative they choose, patrons can dine on a menu curated by Chef Hicks along with offering additional tips and/or donations towards her cause. Our impactful episode continued with Muhammad Abdul-Hadi. Abdul-Hadi's story begins with his entrepreneurial spirit; as a youth he grew up learning the in's and out's of owning businesses from his older sibling. Soon after graduating high school, he turned that passion into a budding career. Years later, after an unfortunate run-in with the judicial system, Muhammad turned his remarkable skills towards restaurant ownership with a mission, and Down North Pizza was formed. Since its inception, Abdul-Hadi staffs Down North Pizza exclusively with individuals who are entering the work-force after being incarcerated, offering them fair wages, culinary skills, and most importantly--job security where other businesses fail to do the same. However, the best part is saved for last, because the pizza's on their menu are so delicious that they have received attention from numerous publications and mainstream media outlets.Lastly, we spoke with Christa Barfield, a highly motivated self-starter who is using her self-taught Agricultural skills to continue growing her CSA business: Farmer Jawn. Since she initially began Farmer Jawn, which offers fresh produce to food insecure families and communities located in food deserts, Barfield has continued to grow in all meanings of the word. After recently acquiring an impressive 123 acres of land, Barfield is now able to offer families on her "wait list" to sign up for her CSA program. I'm not sure about you, but with everything that happened around the globe, this is an episode that will uplift your spirits, tempt your taste buds, and hopefully inspire you or someone you know! Stay tuned this and every Tuesday at 6pm on WWDB 860 AM & WPEN HD2 FM in the Philadelphia listening area, and in the Hudson Valley region on Fridays at 1pm on WMLD 103.7 FM!

Interview with author and professor Matthew Thiessen. Jonny interviews Matthew on his book “Jesus and the Forces of Death: The Gospels' Portrayal of Ritual Impurity within First-Century Judaism.” Matthew starts out by breaking down two binaries that were used by ancient Jews - holy and profane; purity and impurity - and uses those as a guide to enlighten the listeners about ritual purity laws in first century Judaism and why Christians should care about them. It is a valuable conversation with a message that is important for all Christians. Kate interviews Conrad Real, well-known percussionist. To watch Seattle musician, Conrad Real, work the drum kit is to experience your own eyes bulging. Real, who performs regularly with the Grammy-winning hip-hop trio, Digable Planets, as well as, with the beloved Emerald City funk quartet, Down North, is known by many around his hometown as “Superman,” both for the sculpted physique under his blue t-shirt & for the locomotive-paced, laser beam-precise playing he brings to prominent shows. Real collaborates regularly with other significant musical artists. He's shared stages with Andrew Gouche, Kamasi Washington, Billy Branch, Federico Malaman, Hadrian Feraud, Tom Browne, The Temptations' G.C. Cameron and many others. I met Conrad in 2015, when he was DJing at a popular Kirkland pub for Karaoke night. I have to thank him, -- if you are a parent – you know how hard it is to get “cool credit” with your Kids and my son was definitely impressed when I told him I had met Conrad Real. The guys are back, recapping an extremely eventful week in the ACC, which saw... - Clemson ended up without Trevor Lawrence, and Boston College got almost every break they could've asked for...but DJ Uiagalelei, Travis Etienne, and the rest of the Tigers still managed the comeback win. - Virginia had a great game plan and executed it even better to pull off the upset against North Carolina...and Mack Brown continues to struggle in Charlottesville in his career. - Virginia Tech gave up almost 550 yards, and yet Mike was still impressed with the Hokies' defensive effort against Louisville. - Georgia Tech lost by 18 to Notre Dame, and Joey is perfectly OK with that! All of this, plus weekly awards, and MORE!
Portfolio manager Darren Lekkerkerker discusses investing in North American equity markets, with a focus on high-quality securities, against the backdrop of U.S. elections and global uncertainty. Darren is positive on the market. He believes there is plenty of monetary stimulus, and that there will soon be even more fiscal stimulus. Currently, Darren is following a home-centric trend, and expects home builders, painters and decorators will do well as people continue to spend more time at home and move farther away from cities into larger homes. He sees e-commerce and housing as two themes that will continue to play out after the pandemic; they have a lot of durability. He notes that larger and vertically integrated companies could continue to benefit, because they have stronger supply chains in place and are able to meet growing demand. Recorded on October 20, 2020.

Sharkey's Treehouse: Presenting New Musicians, Celebrating the Legends
Welcome to the house! This is the first episode of Sharkey's Treehouse and we're happy you're here! We sit down with Down North, a killer Rock/Funk/Soul band from the moist music scene of Seattle. These guys a fun as well to see live - they'll get you off your ass and onto the floor movin' like you haven't before. And if they don't see you movin' they'll tell you how! We met at our home base The Rink Studios in Sacramento after they had a long drive from their home town. Their music has been described as “'Soul Punk' — like the Red Hot Chili Peppers are covering Michael Jackson with an early James Brown as the front man." Down North is a contradiction in terms. While the band hails from Seattle their sound is not what you’d expect to come from the waterlogged Northwest city. I’m proud to have Down North launch my premiere episode of Sharkey’s Treehouse! The audio is a work in progress as we figure out the best way to do this, along with the acoustics. It'll only get better from here people! Also, there is an effort to water down North Dakota's food freedom laws, and it seems to be coming from the grocery industry.
Today’s episode and connects the topic of the previous season, which focused on the past, present and future of Seattle music, with the topic of this season, which is focused on homelessness. The episode features an interview with Anthony Briscoe whose Seattle-based band, Down North, is on the cusp of a breakout. Brisco opens up about his struggle with poverty and his experience being homeless in our region. The episode also features an interview with noted author and UW professor Scott Allard. He dispels some myths associated with poverty, describes which programs are effective and which programs build a poverty trap, and offers actions you can take to help improve your community. The song Heartbreaker, by Down North, is played in this episode. Down North consists of Lead Vocalist/Dancer Anthony “Renegade” Briscoe, whose North Carolina breeding makes fans swoon and has no equal in the Pacific NW. Raised on Michael Jackson and Sam Cooke, Anthony combines a style and emotional impact reminiscent of Prince in his vocal expressions, proudly stealing the spotlight with his ballet-trained dancing. Scott W. Allard joined the Evans School of Public Policy and Governance at the University of Washington as a professor of public policy and governance in 2014. Allard is a nonresident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution’s Metropolitan Policy Program and co-primary investigator of the Family Self-Sufficiency Data Center at the University of Chicago. He is author of Out of Reach: Place, Poverty, and the New American Welfare State (2009, Yale University Press), which examines the contemporary social service safety net through survey interviews with almost 1,500 government, for-profit, and nonprofit social service organizations. In 2017, he published a book entitled Places in Need: The Changing Geography of Poverty, which focuses upon the rise in poverty in America’s suburban areas and the stubborn persistence of poverty in urban areas.
We are re-running Chris and Leigh-Ann's first episode as hosts of Feed the Beast - Episode 11 with Kurt Evans. Kurt is equal parts chef and agent of social change. He is part of Cooking for the Culture, a dinner series celebrating black chefs, as well as Ending Mass Incarceration, a dinner series discussing issues surround criminal justice reform. Kurt's newest concept, Down North, is opening in November at 2804 Leighigh Avenue, serving flatbreads, pizzas, chicken wings, and other American fare. Kurt is using Down North as an agent of social change, explicitly hiring returning citizens (the proper term for formerly incarcerated individuals), in an attempt to ease the effects of mass incarceration."Links:• https://www.cooking4theculture.com/ •• https://www.instagram.com/kurtcooks/ • • https://www.instagram.com/cooksfortheculture/ •• https://www.phillymag.com/foobooz/2018/09/17/down-north-philadelphia-pizza/ •• https://www.facebook.com/TECCDC/ •• https://twitter.com/PhilaTEC •• https://www.instagram.com/westphillyfoods/ •

The BGP is a Northwest outfit that doesn’t sound like they are from The Northwest. Their sound flows through cities like New Orleans, Memphis, Atlanta, NY or Philly; it is definitely not the Puget Sound, if you dig. One could say that this group of friends and accomplished musicians plays a very sophisticated yet accessible brand of soul pop and rock. The truth is The BGP defies categorization. Oh sure you hear the influences but the boys have their own thing goin’ on and have for several years. Allen Stone used to open for them. The BGP opened for Fitz and The Tantrums who were playing their coming out party before achieving local and global success. These talented group of cats also appeared on national TV on America’s Got Talent. Over the course of their time together they have released an EP and a handful of singles. It all started when they released their debut EP, titled Love & Rent, in 2010. After a very successful Kickstarter campaign, the group has released their second EP, titled Fort Knox, in late 2015. The BGP is a band we have championed for almost 6 years. We have watched and heard them evolve during that time. It was an honor to have them kick off the musical portion of our 5 year Anniversary party last summer at Rhapsody World Headquarters in Seattle. We did so because we love their sound and you couldn’t meet a cooler bunch of fellas. The BGP will play their first show of the new year at the legendary Neumos on Capitol Hill on Wednesday, January 20th. Also on the bill will be Down North and Bardot. Tickets are available here. We have interviewed The BGP for past episodes of SMI Radio. We finally got the group to come into Critical Sun Studios for a live in-studio session and interview. The full interview and performances can be heard by clicking the player below. We invite you to take a look at their live performances of “Uhmerica,” “Normal Things,” and “VCR” engineered by Bubba Jones of Critical Sun Recordings with the video production and photo gallery courtesy of Jason Tang.
