Welcome back to the Mastering Mindset Podcast and today I have someone really special to introduce to you all. With a background in Kinesiology and a performance coach to many A-list athletes, Brandon Harris co-founded Premier Fitness Systems based in Arizona and has a very unique philosophy to his approach to training bodies and minds. I know Brandon because we share a client who plays on the Korn Ferry Tour, and I've grown to really admire his work and his philosophy behind what he does. It's also really entertaining to watch. If you go to his Instagram account, which are in the show notes below, you'll see that he is also Sean Suga O'Malley's performance coach. Sean O'Malley is a MMA fighter currently ranked 13th in the UFC Bantamweight rankings. Dana White, president of the UFC organization speaks very highly of Suga Sean saying he is the next big thing to the UFC organization. It's great to see Brandon sharing his wisdom and teachings inside the octagon and on the course. In this episode I asked Brandon what themes he notices among all the elite performers and he boils it down to a beautiful phrase - it's their relationship to fear and how well they lean into it. Brandon not only trains the human body to perform and operate like a machine... he is also very skilled in breath work and the mind body connection. Brandon shares his wisdom and his knowledge with us on how we too can begin performing like an elite athlete using breath work and understanding our mind body connection. We are hearing and reading all about Scottie Scheffler these days, but I want to see if we can unpack his mindset to try to understand how Scottie thinks on and off the golf course so that we too can glean lessons from him to apply in our own lives that would help improve the quality of our life and our game. Here is a summary of what we discuss in today's episode:#1: Let's talk about Scottie's faith. Why is it so important to have a deeper purpose to life and in what we do? How does connecting with something bigger than us allow us to play and think better during the most stressful and pressured-filled moments of our lives? #2 Get off the Hedonic treadmill. #3 Surround yourself with a great supportive team. #4 Being sincerely okay to make mistakes. #5 High performers find a way to compete, show up, and execute, in spite of how they feel. How do you focus better? how do you build your confidence and sustain it for long periods of time...even if you don't feel confidence about your game? What is our approach in addressing failure and the fear behind it?In this episode, I had the unique opportunity to unpack the mind of Christian Smith, who is currently the Senior Mental Conditioning Coach at the IMG Academy in Florida specializing on mental conditioning for golfers. Christian addresses some critical aspects to the mental side of golf. You will hear us talk about confidence and managing expectations for younger athletes and embracing more of an improving mindset rather than a proving mindset. As a mental conditioning coach, we preach the phrase "focus on the process..." but what does that really mean? You'll hear a phrase that Christian uses with all of his elite junior athletes that he trains day in and day out on building successful experiences into their games. This is an incredible episode loaded with valuable content so I encourage you to get your pen and papers out because I believe you'll be writing down some notes that will help improve your mind as it relates to golf. Jaden is a junior golfing phenom. He is currently 12yo and is one of the hottest junior golfers in the world. In this episode, we get a sneak peak into the training and development of this young phenom through the lens of his father, Chris. Through the development of Jaden's branding, media management, caddying, travel agent, coach, and dad - we explore what it's like to actually raise an elite junior golfer and all that it entails. What I most appreciate about this interview with Jaden's dad, Chris, is his willingness to share his vulnerability around the fact that there is no playbook for this... and a lot of what he is doing is through the support of his community and seeking his own personal development so that he can show up as a father to Jaden first and foremost - and find ways to give Jaden his best, while also making it fun, and enjoyable along the way.In this episode we talk about the challenges of raising a junior athlete and the importance of mental training at the right developmental age. There are many great resources for this and my team and I are putting on a mental skills challenge for anyone to get introduced to mental performance training and what the benefits are for yourself and your child. If you are interested in participating, I will be going LIVE for 3 days talking about mental skills and how to move through mental blocks. Not only will you go live with me for 3 days, but you will also receive videos, worksheets, and more resources to help kick start this mental training process for you. Sign up for an upcoming FREE Mental Skills Challenge (CLICK HERE)Have you ever been curious as to what a sport psychology coaching session actually sounds and feels like? In this episode, you are going to find out. I have the unique permission and opportunity to share a recent session I did unpacking the mind and the golf game of Jayden Ramos, a senior at St. Ignatious High School in Northern California. Jayden has committed to play golf in college at Hawaii next year and he is one of our newest members of the Mat Park golf academy, MPGA, which is a mental training platform for elite golfers. Jayden is currently experiencing some challenges in his game especially in the areas of consistency and thinking more positively around the course. In this process of rebuilding, he's recognized the importance and need of mental training for his game. He has heard of MPGA and decided to give it a shot. And ever since he's joined, he has been all in. Last week, we put out a gratitude challenge where members had to reflect on 3 good things that happened each day and reflect on them. Each member was asked to share their reflections and insights within the MPGA community and that we would select a winner at the end of the week who showed most consistency and deliberate practice throughout the exercise. Jayden wrote his reflections everyday for 7 days straight and has continued on, hence he was our winner for that challenge. He won a gift session with me and Coach Johnathan, another mastering mindset coach inside the MPGA academy and we were given the permission to share this session with you all here. Jayden's perspective to mental training is fascinating and he demonstrates a maturity well beyond his years. In this episode, we unpack the difference between a perfectionistic mindset vs a progressionistic mindset, a phrase Jayden introduced to me. We also talk about his approach of letting go of control to gain control, to focus only on the process, and how best to get into the neutral zone. We ended the session discussing various post shot routines and specific examples that my clients have used. If any of these topics interest you, this is an episode (or rather session) you don't want to miss. This is my first time sharing a student/coach session with you and I hope you enjoy it as much as I had. One of the topics that continue to come up for me in my work is self-awareness - being aware of your own thoughts and being aware of what you are feeling. When I coach, a lot of what I do is to reflect back what I am hearing my clients say and to help facilitate and increase more awareness in their lives. I firmly believe that a good sport psychologist errs on the side of NOT giving advice to their clients, but to help people gain deeper insights and increase self-awareness to their current challenges. It's about clarity and finding more clarity in their lives. Clarity = freedom. So you tell me, who's in charge of your life - the thinker (you) or your thoughts?Listen to this final episode of Season 4 of the Mastering Mindset Podcast! We are currently taking applications for this next cohort of the Rising Stars Mental Training Camp with Dr. Mat. I've been waiting to share this episode with you all because this topics is a struggle for me as much as it is these with everyone I'm running into... the comparison trap.Theodore Roosevelt once said, “Comparison is a thief of joy.” And I believe this statement is more true today than ever. But why does comparing ourselves with others rob us of joy? Psychologists recommend that when we compare, we should create a list of the top 7 people in our category and instead of comparing ourselves to the #1 person on the top of the list, try to compare yourself to the 7th person on the list. When we do this, the envy, discouragement, and feelings of defeat might not be as strong and we may find more similarities to the 7th person on that list compared to the number 1 person. I hope you find this episode helpful whether you are a golfer, a parent, a coach, or someone who has fallen into the comparison trap as much as I have these days from scrolling aimlessly on social media.Welcome to the Mastering Mindset Podcast.Hope to connect with you in 2022.Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dr.mat_park/Website: https://drmatpark.com/Registration for my elite mental training camp is NOW open with limited seating. In this last episode of the year 2021, I talk about something very meaningful to me... "Own Your Greatness!"We all have fears. We all have insecurities that can blind us to the things that make us different, unique, and special. And instead of celebrating and honoring our unique traits, we judge them and criticize ourselves when we begin to compare ourselves to others or the image of where we think we should be or have in our life. Psychologist call this “counterfactual thinking,” it's where we image outcomes that didn't happen. There was a study done on happiness and compared Silver medalists to Bronze medalists on the Olympic podium. You would think that because silver outperform the bronze, they would be happier. But the opposite was true… Silver medalists were less happy than bronze medalist because of counterfactual thinking. Silver medalists compared upward to what they didn't achieve - or what they could have achieved but didn't. Bronze medalist on the otherhand were comparing themselves downward - meaning they were more grateful to be going home with hardware or simply to have made it to the podium. There was more gratitude about being where they were and to have achieved what they did. Where Silver medalists were focusing more on “I could have…” Bronze were focusing more on “At least…” At least I got something today. You see the biggest difference that was a direct correlation to happiness was that Silver medalists compare themselves to the gold medalists; bronze medalists compare themselves to themselves. Comparing ourselves to others is a trap, yet we all do it especially more now because of social media. But it is a never ending cycle that will trigger all of our insecurities and fears. We cannot compare our lives to others because our life is not theirs and their life is not ours…Narratives dictate our lives. The stories we create powerfully dictate the actions we take and who we think we can or cannot become. It is our beliefs and stories that determine our destiny. You can look at your natural qualities and tendencies and view them from the lens of “not good enough” or “need more…” However, you can also view your natural tendencies “just right, perfect, a work in progress, lovable and enough for me.” The only story we have control over is our own and only we can do what we do, no one in this world can beat you doing you. Happy New Year everyone. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I had in creating it and sharing it with you all. Please don't forget to share, like, or comment on the episode and please leave me a review and let me know what you think.Warmly,-Dr. Matwww.drmatpark.com

Burnout is something many of us are experiencing without even realizing that we are in the thick of it. Ever since the start of 2020, where we were forced to work from home, the lines between personal and professional got extremely blurry and there was suddenly a spike of burnout happening all over the world… because now you are dealing with adjusting to constant change, lack of boundaries, parenting and work demands all happening at once. A mentor of mine once told me... “Mat - we juggle balls in the air all the time, some balls are made of rubber (like work) that when you drop them, it will most likely bounce back up. Either someone will pick up your slack or it's something you can recover from no matter how difficult might get. But some of the balls you juggle are made of glass (like your health, your relationships around you), that if you ignore these and drop them… they will shatter and they will not bounce back."In this episode we address burnout head on and we talk about what researchers says we should do when we are experiencing it.Don't forget to subscribe to our channel if you haven't already. Welcome to the Season 4 of the Mastering Mindset Podcast. We hear about the term "growth mindset," a term coined by Carol Dweck - but what does it really mean? How do we create an environment that cultivates growth mindset?I was recently asked the questions - how important is mindset and beliefs to our performance? Here was my question... "it's everything!"Here are some key takeaways from this episode: Learn to create an environment that normalizes struggle and encourages growth more than outcomes. Embrace the word “YET” - if someone makes the statement “I'm not good at math,” adding 'yet' to the end of a sentence will signal that a process exists for gaining the ability to do it later on.. “I'm not good at math, yet.” Continue to emphasize that our brains are malleable muscle that can be develop - just like going to the gym and working out if we put in the work. Research on brain plasticity supports the idea that the brain can grow through a process called myelination. If you are a teacher, coach, or parent - demonstrate mistakes yourself and use your mistakes as learning opportunities. Be mindful how you react to mistakes and how to take steps to correct the mistake… this modeling behavior is huge to the children we influence around us.Set small achievable goals. This will motivate behaviors and demonstrate the attainability of growth and progress.Hope you enjoy this episode. You don't. You don't ever get rid of your negative thoughts so I suggest you quit trying. You do, however, have control on how you respond to them and that is where the secret lies!In this episode, we explore a common question I often get from clients: "What do I do with my negative thoughts?" Dear Mastering Mindset Listeners,I've taken a brief hiatus (2-months to be exact) due to some grief we have experienced in our family. But we are doing well and are in a better place now. Today, I wanted to speak to something near and dear to my heart... "Resilience and self-compassion." I always viewed self-compassion as weak and too fluffy. However, I realized over time that self-compassion is something the most resilient people in this world utilize. I spoke about this in episode two and the research I cite is the same... but this episode goes a bit further into talking about real people and house hold names that utilize self-compassion to build resilience in their lives. If people like Ji-Sung Park used self-compassion to build himself back up when he struggled the worst soccer slump of his professional career, or navy seals officer use phrases to build themselves and others up to get through Basic Underwater Demolition Seals (B.U.D.S) training (aka "Hell Week"), then why should I do the same?Take a listen as we round out episode 5 of this 6 part series of the Mastering Mindset Podcast.https://courses.drmatpark.com/
Welcome to the Mastering Mindset Podcast. We are currently in a series called Building Self-Confidence and in this is episode, we explore confidence from a completely different angle. We invited a special guest, who was a former psychotherapist and has now transitioned into coaching - focusing on emotional intelligence and living an authentic wholehearted life. Her work involves aligning our actions to our values, and teaches how to embrace the vulnerabilities in our lives to live courageously, and to own our greatness. Her name is Julia Oh Park and she is a Certified Daring Way Facilitator and studied under the work and research of Dr. Brene Brown. What I really appreciate about Julia's perspective is how different of a perspective she has on confidence and what it means to her. There is an activity she challenges all of our listeners to do at the end of this episode that I find both fascinating and healing at the same time. Reaction cards are showing up on almost every executive office and C-suite meeting rooms. Leaders are leaning into the importance of managing reactions to triggers that normally set them off - by preplanning and committing to how they will react before it even happens. Rather than exploding and reacting negatively to others reactivity, great leaders set forth rules of engagement to follow, self-commitments if you will... on how they would like to ideal respond to these situations instead. My reaction card:1. M.V.P. (Mindful of my thoughts, Validate my emotions, Positivity focused)2. Breathe (I remind myself to reset with a breath)3. 10 Year Perspective Shift exercise (will this moment matter 10 years from now?)4. Have you heard of a term called "Learned Helplessness?" It's a term coined by Dr. Martin Seligman in his research on depression and early signs of depression. Now why are we talking about depression in mastering one's mindset? The reason is simple... "what you believe, you become." It's scientific that you can believe your way into being and the language you use in your head, determines your life.Napoleon Hill said it best, "Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve."Pay attention to your thoughts. Because thoughts are simply the words we use plus the picture we create in your head. If you don't like the thoughts, change your internal language and change the picture you craft in your mind. For more episodes, visit us: www.drmatpark.com/podcastThanks for tuning in.-Dr. Mat

Dr. Martin Seligman is the father of Positive Psychology and he coin the term, Flexible Optimism. Flexible optimism is different from Blind optimism in that failure IS an option, and they are prepared for it if it occurs. Thinking through various options and contingency plans prior to moving forward with an event, task, or change... is what Flexible optimism is all about. However, after careful planning, being able to switch your focus and attention on achieving the desired outcome with the foundational belief in your ability to get it done is the art of practicing this skill successfully. For more information on how to learn this skill, visit us:www.drmatpark.comYours truly,-Dr. MatSee Less
Today we discuss MOTIVATION. Motivation has been research a lot in my field. For example, there is the Expectancy Theory: where motivation is led by how likely we predict a positive outcome, or Self-Determination Theory: where motivation is driven by a need for mastery, belonging, and autonomy. Today, we don't discuss any theories- Just simple application in motivation. In my work, I use the DISC profile assessment to help a lot of leaders engage with their workforce on whole other level. Today, we explore my own personality type, the "S" style and practical applications of how to engage and motivate someone who has the complete opposite personality as I do... the "D" style.BLUF - Bottom Line Up FrontFor more resources, come check out our site and give us a shout:www.drmatpark.comTill next time,-Dr. Mat

In this episode, we dive into conversation techniques to assist you in having more effective starts. Emotional intelligence begins with learning how to have challenging conversations. Emotionally intelligent leaders are able to utilize a gentle start-up approach to create psychological safety the moment a conversation begins. This technique allows for individuals on the receiving end put down their guards, to feel safe enough to engage, and have more facilitative conversations. F.A.N. formula1. FEELING - describe YOUR feeling not stating what the other did when you begin 2. ABOUT - describe facts about the situation and what might be causing you to feel this way3. NEED - express a need and emphasis how things may be different if this need is met.Check-out/Close-out Statements:As soon as you complete the FAN formula, allow a chance for the other person to engage by inviting them with a check-out/close out statement and question. Check-out/Close-outs examples:"How does that sound?""Did that make sense?""What are your thoughts on what I just shared?""How are you feeling right now?"Hope you can begin practicing this to elevate your Emotional Intelligence to the next level. Have you heard of the Pomodoro Method? It's probably one of the most important time management techniques ever created. It helps countless leaders, executives, and top performers retain, learn, and perform at their best. Here is essentially how it works:1. Set a timer on your phone for 25 minutes before you engage in any task.2. Begin the task you are set out to do and dedicate your attention and focus on it for 25 minutes.3. As soon as the timer goes off, take a 5 minute stretch break. Get up. Roll your shoulders. Take a breathe. Then when the 5 minutes is over, set another timer for 25 minutes.4. Begin your next 25 minute focus block.5. Rinse and Repeat.Hope you enjoyed this podcast. It's short, sweet, and to the point. Something I've been aiming to do more of in the start of 2021.
