Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy has long been a pusher of junk science, especially when it comes to research around vaccines and autism. So it should come as no surprise that he appears open to revisiting the decades-old FDA approval of the abortion drug mifepristone, at least in part based on a report from a conservative think tank that was neither peer-reviewed, nor published in a medical journal. What the report in question conveniently contradicts more than 100 peer-reviewed studies that show mifepristone is safe to use and effective. Jessica Valenti, author of book ‘Abortion: Our Bodies, Their Lives, And The Truths We Use To Win,' joins us to talk about the state of reproductive rights in the U.S. with President Donald Trump is back in power. And in headlines: Trump again walked back his threats for steep tariffs on the European Union, Russia unleashed another massive drone and missile attack on Ukraine, and Republican Senators throw cold water on the House version of Trump's spending and tax plan — a.k.a. the Big Beautiful Bill.Show Notes:Check out Jessica's book –https://tinyurl.com/2zs7jfszSubscribe to the What A Day Newsletter – https://tinyurl.com/3kk4nyz8What A Day – YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@whatadaypodcastFollow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/crookedmedia/For a transcript of this episode, please visit crooked.com/whataday

We're back this week with regular episodes and we couldn't have asked for a better guest than Jessica Valenti. Jessica has a popular newsletter on Substack called “Abortion, Every Day” where she covers the latest news about reproductive rights. She also has a new book that came out this week: Abortion - Our Bodies, Their Lies, and the Truths We Use to Win.Jessica shared her thoughts about America post-Roe, and in turn Rachel shared her own difficult personal story about losing her daughter Sarah shortly after she was born. The fact that extremists are spreading lies about “post-birth abortions” (which, to be clear, is just murder and is illegal in every state) and saying terrible things about parents like Rachel is… well, it's difficult to think of a strong enough word. Awful? Evil? Unthinkable? One thing, however, is extremely clear. We have to vote them out.But before Rachel's interview with Jessica, we're joined by Janice Robinson. Janice is Red Wine & Blue's Program Director in North Carolina and she catches us up on all things NC. The recent leaked posts from Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson were undeniably offensive, but Janice says that they just distract from the real issues facing women in her state like reproductive rights, public schools, and gun violence. It's easy to get overwhelmed with the daily barrage of news, but when we focus on the issues, we win.If abortion rights are important to you (and if you're listening to this podcast, they probably are!), the most effective action you can take right now is to join Rally. Rubicon: The Impeachment of Donald Trump

This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit www.politix.fmThis week, Matt and Brian take stock of Donald Trump's late pitch to young male voters, who are significantly more Republican curious than young men were in the Bush and Obama years:* Are young men really drifting in a more conservative direction? Or are they mostly attracted to Trump's teflon libertinism?* Is America swinging back to a pre-Bush norm when partisanship wasn't so stratified by age?* Will these voters turn out? Are they even registered? Then, behind the paywall, Matt and Brian debate the theoretical merits of pandering to young voters with policy appeals. Are Trump's weird promises around vaping and cryptocurrency really the kind of thing that can mobilize voters without partisan commitments or apolitical young people? Does the fact that he fully reversed himself, in exchange for money, to adopt these new positions undermine the appeal at all? And to what extent is the Harris campaign also microtargeting young voters? All that, plus the full Politix archive are available to paid subscribers—just upgrade your subscription and pipe full episodes directly to your favorite podcast app via your own private feed. Further reading:* Brian on the deficiencies of Trump's pandering, young-male voter Hail Mary. * Matt on whether the influx of women into the workforce (and, in parallel, the Democratic Party) help explain new norms around sensitivity (or young men's new openness to MAGA). * Jessica Valenti on how Kamala Harris doesn't just defend abortion but has started to normalize it.* The Harvard Institute of Politics fall youth poll.

Wade to be overturned during Biden's term and what the overturning of it has meant, the status of abortion laws across states, why she feels hormonal birth control will be taken away from teenagers and more.

On this week's episode of The Waves, one year after the Supreme Court decision that set off a national crisis in reproductive health care, we're taking a look at what the end of Roe has wrought. Countless lives have been affected: There's the people who've traveled across the country to get their lives back, the people who've been forced against their will into pregnancy and childbirth, and those who've been denied life saving medical care because their doctors are afraid of the law. There's also the people doing what they can to mitigate the damage—with ballot measures, and abortion funds, and the tools and knowledge to help someone manage an abortion on their own. Slate senior writer Christina Cauterucci talks with Diane Horvath and Morgan Nuzzo, who opened an abortion clinic in Maryland just as Roe fell. She also sits down with Elaina Ramsey, who leads a faith-based pro-abortion group in Ohio that's been charting new ways to use the specific assets of faith communities to help people get abortions, and Jessica Valenti, a journalist who's been tracking the warp-speed rollback of abortion access across the country, and telling the stories of people whose lives have been upended because of it. Some of Christina's Writing on Abortion: Birth Control Is Next You Will Still Be Able to Get a Medication Abortion—Even if This Barbaric Ruling Stands What Anti-Abortion Advocates Really Think of Women's Lives If the “Abortion Pill” Gets Banned, There's Still One Good Move The Religious Left Has Found Its Mission If you liked this episode, check out: What the F*** Do We Do Now?    Podcast production by Cheyna Roth with editorial oversight by Daisy Rosario and Alicia Montgomery.  It's Hump Day! Sam and Emma host economist Nathan Tankus, proprietor of the Notes on the Crises newsletter, to discuss the debt ceiling negotiations. Then, they're joined by Jessica Valenti, author of the Abortion, Every Day newsletter on SubStack, to discuss the recent anti-aborton laws being passed in state legislatures across the country. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the GOP's increasing demands for cuts (and spending), student loan forgiveness, a collab between Tiny D and Tiny E, fascist legislation in South Carolina, Florida, and Montana, and Target's response to homophobic violence at their stores, plus, John Roberts addresses concerns about internal Supreme Court ethics problems by assuring us it'll be addressed internally. Nathan Tankus then joins, diving right into the complete incompetence within Democratic leadership that led up to this debt ceiling debacle, including the “lessons” Biden is taking from last decade's debt ceiling debacle, and why they refused to make a plan B in case the obstructionist GOP obstructed. Next, he, Sam, and Emma tackle the balance between maliciousness and incompetence within both parties, before parsing through the unilateral actions Biden COULD take (including the platinum coin), and why Democrats love to manufacture their own failures. Jessica Valenti then shifts the conversation to the Republican attack on reproductive health, tackling the massive problems presented by the GOP's “exceptions,” why, despite the discourse, they have little to no practical effect on actually getting vulnerable people abortions, and why taking them seriously only puts more lives in danger. After parsing through the particulars of Republican states' legislative strategy, they look to the likelihood of a National Ban, and greater tactics of chipping away at reproductive freedom for all Americans. Wrapping up, they explore the relationship between attacks on reproductive healthcare and transgender healthcare, and reflect on two decades of failing Democratic messaging. And in the Fun Half: Benny Jonhson gets schooled on Twitter spaces, Rep. Crane from Arizona makes a fool of himself in Congress, and Target concedes to violent homophobes, taking LGBTQ merch out of stores. Emma and Sam tackle Lauren Boebert's recent anecdote in the wake of her divorce, and discuss alternative debt ceiling tactics, plus, your IMs! Sam and Emma host Will Sommer, politics reporter for The Daily Beast, to discuss his recent book Trust The Plan: The Rise of QAnon and the Conspiracy That Unhinged America. First, Emma and Sam run through updates on the Fed and treasury rushing to bail out SVB depositors, Biden approving the massive environmentally-destructive Willow project, Norfolk Southern's refusal to compensate affected homeowners, a Texas judge hiding proceedings around the abortion pill from the public, Saudi-Iran talks, and the Atlanta PD's murder of Cop-City protestor Tortaguita, before diving into the right's attempt to pin SVB's collapse on going woke, rather than Trump's rollback of post-2008 regulations. Will Sommer then dives right into the first seeds of Q-anon, stemming, most likely, from a South African programmer taking inspiration from a gonzo Hunter S. Thompson work that invented a bonkers drug derived from pedophiles, and going all in on both the evangelical fetishization of the purity of children and 4Chan's obsession with fake leakers. Walking through the next stage of Q's evolution, Sommer explores the hijacking of Q's posts by the Watkins brothers on 8Chan, before Will, Sam, and Emma step back and tackle how the theocratic “ends justify the means” ideology grounds itself in anti-social and bigoted behaviors. Next, they walk through Q's influence from the coded language of Rush Limbaugh, and parse through the genuine presence of Q's followers at the pinnacles of American power, from Marjorie Taylor Greene to the Thomas family. After assessing the standing of Q in politics moving forwards, Sommer, Emma, and Sam wrap up the interview with an analysis of the various conspiratorial and exploitative networks that Q is a part of. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma compare and contrast politicians' takes on the SVB collapse, from Katie Porter on the Crapo Bill to Joe Lonsdale on protecting the “innovation” world from their own mistakes, Nancy Mace exemplifies the right's attack on Social Security, and Lulu from Philly expands on the SVB collapse. Amir from VA responds to today's interview on Q-Anon, and Charlie Kirk gets caught in his own election denialism. Linda from Texas recommends the work of Jessica Valenti, the Wall Street Journal blames the SVB collapse on the existence of Black and queer folks at the bank, Trent from Omaha discusses focusing on electoral issues, and Luke from Ithaca takes on the future of independent media, plus, your calls and IMs!
