Content Warnings: Murder, Rape, Sexual AssaultIn this powerful and at times hard hitting but at the same time joyful episode, Jimanekia shares the very personal reasons she has become a trauma specialist. She shares very helpful insight into what trauma is and how to notice if trauma is showing up in yourself or people in your life; as well as the importance of taking a holistic and somatic perspective to trauma as well as psychological and social one. Jimanekia talks with Jayda about how to actually ask for help as someone who struggles to and why you need to be really specific and teach people how to show up for you. At the same time she talks to why each person needs to take responsibility for our capacity to support others and set boundaries around that and the importance of directly communicating to a person needing help if you are burnt out. Jayda also asks Jimanekia about generational trauma and her advice on how to break out of roles and family systems that no longer serve you as well as if Jimanekia thinks one can overcome trauma and her reflection on the difference between wiping away what has happened to you, rather, changing how things affect you. This conversation is also full of Jimanekia's advice for daily tips and habits to help yourself work through trauma, live in self worth and with self love, how to talk back to the negative voice in your head and the radical importance of centring joy in your life even if you are navigating trauma, and how to take ‘healing off the pedestal' and move towards a growing mindset instead.Follow Jimaneika EbornFollow Jayda GFollow Here's Hoping PodcastMore on our guest Trauma Queen Trauma Queen PodcastJimanekia Eborn is a Queer, Sexual Assault & Trauma Expert, Trauma Media Consultant, and Comprehensive Sex Educator, who has worked in mental health for the past 16 years in sex education and sexual trauma support. On this episode of #mensexpleasure, I chat with Jimanekia Eborn. Jimanekia Eborn is a Queer Sexual Assault & Trauma Expert, Trauma Media Consultant, and Comprehensive Sex Educator. She is the host of Trauma Queen - a podcast working to normalize conversations about life's most challenging experiences, from sexual assault to mental health and beyond. Jimanekia is the Founder of Tending The Garden- a nonprofit in service of sexual assault survivors who have been marginalized; offering retreats, online summits, community and education. She is also the co-founder of Cintima, bringing increased representation to the field of Intimacy Coordination in the film industry. Key points: Introductions and background Jimanekia introduces herself, sharing her full name and background. She describes herself as an inquisitive, question-asking person who has experienced various traumas and is now dedicated to supporting others navigating difficult experiences. She outlines her diverse work, including the Jimanekia project focused on assault, her trauma-focused podcast, an intimacy coordinator training company, and her role in the mental health department of a professional wrestling company. Trauma-informed support and advocacy Jimanekia discusses her approach to supporting survivors, emphasizing the importance of allowing them to guide the conversation and decide how they want to share their experiences. She contrasts this with common unhelpful responses that project assumptions or make demands of survivors. Jimanekia also highlights the need for more trauma-informed support, especially for marginalized groups and men, who often face additional stigma and barriers to disclosing. Navigating trauma and consent The conversation explores the complexities around trauma, consent, and gender. Jimanekia and Cam discuss the societal pressures and norms that can prevent men from recognizing or disclosing their experiences of abuse, as well as the tendency to dismiss or trivialize these experiences. They emphasize the importance of creating safe spaces for all survivors to be heard and supported without judgment. Systemic change and accountability Jimanekia and Cam discuss the need for broader systemic changes to address the root causes of violence and trauma, such as harmful gender norms, power imbalances, and lack of accountability. They highlight the responsibility of institutions and communities to proactively create safer environments and provide comprehensive support for survivors, rather than placing the burden on individuals. Closing thoughts Jimanekia closes the conversation by offering encouragement and validation to any male survivors listening, emphasizing that their experiences are not their fault and that there are supportive communities available to them. Bodies are Telling is a two part exploration of the often complex relationship between the body and the self, told by Jimanekia Eborn through an intimate, personal reflection of her own journey to self-discovery. What are the psychological effects of growing up in a body that is constantly objectified? How do outside influences and expectations impact the way we perceive ourselves? What does it mean to reconnect to our body and heal after experiencing sexual assault? This started out as a podcast discussing bodies that have been impacted by shame and guilt. But it turned into a candid sharing of deep truths; an examination of personal trauma and what it's like to come out on the other side. While also calling in others' journeys and ideals around their own bodies, this is a story that, sadly, many will listen to and be able to connect with, but, hopefully, it is also a story that many can discover a place of understanding, realisation, and, ultimatley, hope. TW: This series mentions sexual assault and eating disorders. When it comes to healing, the path is not linear. Whether you are are a survivor of sexual assault or have experienced trauma in your life, you are worthy to pursue wholeness and healing. It can be a hard road to find the right community to heal with, especially if you identify as part of a marginalized community. Prevalently, therapy and therapeutic services cater largely to one group, evidenced by the fact that approximately 86% of psychologists are white, and less than 2% of American Psychological Association members are African American, and for people in the LGBTQ+ community, the offerings are similarly limited. Our guest for this episode in the For the Love of You series believes that healing and help for trauma and abuse is for everyone. Jimanekia Eborn is a queer trauma media consultant, comprehensive sex educator, and a sexual assault and trauma expert. Her work lands at the intersection of healing and community for marginalized folks. Not only that, Jimanekia is a survivor herself, and talks about her experience with vulnerability and honesty, creating a welcoming and comforting atmosphere for her clients. Jen and Jimanekia talk through the boundaries that exist for marginalized communities as they seek out mental health care, how to help those closest to you after traumatic experiences, and why caring for ourselves allows us to care for others better. Content Warning: A quick note for you listeners. This episode touches on sexual assault and sexual trauma, so it may not be suitable for young audiences or survivors on the path to healing. * * * Thank you to our sponsors! Jimanekia Eborn, trauma specialist and founder of Tending the Garden, joins us again to process her life story from the previous episode. After witnessing her mother's murder at age one, Jimanekia's inner child has had a lot of healing to do. But she candidly tells us that self-healing has not always been on the forefront of her mind. In her early years, many times, she admits to going off course down roads that led to more trauma for herself. Other times, through her work in the mental health industry, she has put another survivor's healing before her own. Regardless, she explains that she has always had the instinct to “make her mommy proud” and so both her self-healing and her vision for helping others has persevered. In this episode, we talk about everything from her unexpected connection to pro wrestling, her philosophy on the importance of positive destruction along with her desire to “fuck up and rebuild the sex ed community”, a rally cry that all three of us can get behind for the good of humankind. Finally, she fleshes out her vision for the future that includes continuing her crucial life's work with Tending the Garden. Please join us for another captivating episode of Open Deeply. Jimanekia Eborn, who refers to herself as a “child of trauma”, takes us on her powerful life journey from witnessing her mother being brutally murdered at the age of one to becoming an inspiring expert in the areas of sexual trauma support and sex education with a special love for helping those with marginalized identities. Her childhood included many struggles related to class, race, and bodily autonomy. By age twelve, she had already learned that Black bodies are commodified which contributed to her difficulties with internalized body shame and her choice to keep her sexual awakening very private. Despite never being kissed until age seventeen, college was a game changer. Here, she discovered the “power of her pussy”. She organically found non-monogamy and even experienced her first play party. After college, Jimanekia traversed the mental health field, finally finding her soul's love while holding space for sexual abuse survivors, helping them heal while concurrently educating on healthy, shame free sex. Welcome back my lovers. How are y'all holding up? Firstly, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. It has been amazing to host the last two seasons and I am beyond ecstatic that we are back for another one. To kick things off, Julia from @soihadanabortion takes the reins in a flipping of the script. I got to experience what it's like relinquishing control and being in the hot seat. Julia has me blabbing about the origins of the podcast, as well as its current process. She asks me poignant questions about the lessons I've learned, in this space we've created, and how they highlight where we are at as a society. We then move on to the AMA questions that you submitted! Topics: avoidance, cognitive dissonance, survival, generational patterns, being called in/out, learning as a process of elimination, certainty as the basis for oppression, accountability, non-monogamy, learning about the kink community while entering it, kink anxiety, bullying, the evolution of my understandings of sex from childhood to now, every experience having inherent value, masturbation, world change, activism, anti-racism and other slippery rabbit holes. Here are some Black sex-positive advocates you should be following (as promised in the episode) : Ericka Hart, M. Ed @ihartericka, Ev’Yan Whitney. @evyan.whitney, Ashley Cobb @sexwithashley, Afrosexology @afrosexology_, Goody Howard @askgoody, Unf*ck Your Polyamory @polyrolemodels, Cindy Lee Alves @cindyleealves. Vagesteem @vagesteem, Jimanekia Eborn, MS @jimanekia, Javay Frye @javaydabae and so many more! Plug: Cicely Blain and Ji-Youn Kim's Processing Rage Workshop and the Stratagem Virtual Conference. Thanks again my loves. It feels weird releasing an "about me" episode in these times, but the battle continues and will always be an intersectional fight. I hope some of the insights in here are valuable and that we remember this work is only possible today thanks to Marsha P. Johnson and other black trans activists.
