In this episode, we're joined by Fatema D. Ahmadi, a proficient human rights advocate with over a decade of experience working on the frontlines of gender-based violence, human trafficking, and peace building in Afghanistan. Fatema's personal journey as a displaced person shaped her lifelong commitment to human rights and justice. Her work has been so incredibly impactful. She's done everything from developing national anti-trafficking frameworks to working with victims and survivors. She's been involved in grassroots action and high-level policy, and she's made such a positive difference. A former Fulbright Humphrey Fellow, Fatema reflects on how the fellowship equipped her with tools and global perspectives that she later applied directly in Afghanistan, especially during its peace process. Now though out of Afghanistan, she continues her work through a leading Afghan human rights organization, driving efforts for accountability and justice for victims of human rights abuses. During her time as a research fellow at the Raoul Wallenberg Institute, Fatema is focusing on children's rights in Afghanistan, a topic often overlooked in policy debates. In this conversation, she discusses how generations of war, displacement, and oppression are affecting Afghan children today, and how evidence-based research can support change on both local and international levels. "We're thinking about them, we are researching about them, and we hope we can change their life, and advocating for their rights." Join us to hear Fatema's perspective on justice, advocacy, and why amplifying the voices of vulnerable communities is essential for building a better future.

The Mettleset Podcast

Today's guest is from one of the flattest countries in the world, Bahrain. In fact, the highest point in the entire country is only 134m above sea level and that's not even open to the public. Why is that relevant you may ask? Well, our guest today just completed what is widely considered the hardest ultramarathon in the world, UTMB. For those who don't know UTMB stands for the Ultra Trail Du Mont Blanc, a 171 km trail race with 10,000m of elevation - all with a time limit of 46 hours and 30 minutes. Fatema Husain is the first Bahraini National - woman or man to complete this race and she is here to tell us all about it. This year UTMB started on Friday, 1st of September at 6pm and as it always does, it traversed the Tour Du Mont Blanc hiking path across France, Italy & Switzerland. All starting and ending in Chamonix with the magnificent Mont Blanc as the backdrop to the start and finish line. What's more remarkable is that Fatema once didn't consider herself a runner, in fact it took her a year and a half to build up to running 3 km on a treadmill. Fatema is determination embodied and our chat with her has already given us some ideas about taking on the Tour Du Mont Blanc ourselves. In today's episode we chat with Fatema about how she went from having very little physical activity in her day-to-day life to completing what many consider the pinnacle of the ultra running race calendar. We chat through how she built up her endurance over the past ten years from running to running ultras. Her cycling career - yes, she is also a Bahraini National cycling champ… and the day-by-day of UTMB, including the support she got along the way, racing against cut off times and making peace with pain. We also hear what it felt like carrying the Bahraini flag over the UTMB finish line for the first time ever. For more information on UTMB visit: https://utmb.worldTo follow Fatema Husain on Instagram, follow @FateMoves We were also delighted to see the celebration and acknowledgement that Fatema has received since arriving home. Finally, we talk about Seattle becoming the first American city to add caste to its anti-discrimination laws and if there is hope for similar changes within Indian workspaces in the coming times. Notes related to the conversationThe Hiring Bias Study conducted by LedBy Foundation assessed Muslim women employment in entry-level positions. Main findings as reported in the study:* ‘The net discrimination rate was 47.1%, as the Hindu woman profile (Priyanka Sharma) received 208 positive responses, while the Muslim woman profile (Habiba Ali) received half of that (103). This was evident across industries.* Recruiters were more cordial to the Hindu candidate; 41.3% of the recruiters had connected with Priyanka over phone calls, while only 12.6% spoke with Habiba over a call.* North India had a lower discrimination rate (40%) compared to jobs located in West (59%) and South India (60%).'If you find this or any past episode interesting, please do share it with your friends, family and social groups, and rate or review it wherever you listen to podcasts. Is a perpetual flying drone possible? Fatema Hamdani is President of Kraus Hamdani Aerospace, a San Francisco based leader in ultra long endurance unmanned aerial systems. Founded in 2016, the company has created its flagship product, the K1000ULE, a zero emissions drone flying longer than any other electric aircraft in its category.  Having recently broken the world record for an electric drone in its size and weight category, the K1000ULE can travel longer distances, stay in flight longer and at higher altitudes, making them ideal for jobs that are risky for humans, such as disaster relief efforts, search and recovery, military intelligence and reconnaissance, wildlife anti-poaching operations, and even human trafficking prevention.   Fatema's experience spans across the aerospace, financial services, life science, telecom, travel, and retail domains. Under her leadership, the company is reinventing ultra-long endurance UAS using artificial intelligence, machine learning, and biomimicry to create drones that can stay aloft almost infinitely.  In this edition of the Drone Radio Show, Fatema talks about Kraus Hamdani Aerospace, the K1000ULE and the company's plans for the future.

A quote from Forbes states that “an aerospace colleague recently told Fatema and Stefan that what they're doing for unmanned aerial systems is what the Wright Brothers did for flight.” On the podcast, Fatema addresses layering data from sensors and how much of the work done by UAS is being used to create #digitaltwins, among other topics. The K1000ULE by KH Aerospace is an ultra-long endurance fully electric UAS supporting an array of complex missions utilizing Beyond Line Sight Capabilities. Using edge processing, AI-powered analytics based on geospatial and third-party data, this technology is used for a number of capabilities, including defense, natural disaster, commercial use, and anti-poaching.KH Aerospace is shaking up the industry by making UAVs at a price point finally in reach of commercial enterprises and NGOs, instead of just governments. Strong gender stereotypes plague the participation of Jordanian women in daily life. Not only strongly ingrained cultural perceptions, but infrastructure and legislative measures limit women's ability to fully contribute to society. The lack of gender-friendly facilities and child care outside of the capital, prevent women from even stepping into the workplace. How can meaningful economic and political participation be achieved when so many face these barriers? Fatema of GPPAC sat down with peacebuilder Sanaa Albanawi of the Jordanian National Commission of Women to discuss women's participation in the Middle East and North Africa. Great improvements can be seen, but what can help to break these cultural barriers? Tune in to hear how for instance interactive theatre can raise awareness for women's issues and bring Jordan one step closer towards equality. In this week's episode, John has a conversation with security engineer Fatema Bannat Wala about the challenges of providing network security in a higher education setting. She has experience working as a security engineer for the University of Delaware and is currently working for Lawrence Berkeley National Lab in the Energy Sciences Network. Fatema shares how she was drawn to transition from being a software engineer to being a security engineer because of diverse and novel challenges security provides on a daily basis. She explains the forces driving those challenges – universities have a wide variety of data they'd like to protect, a never-ending rapid rotation of users, inconsistent mobile device IPs, and a wide variety of compliance regulations like HIPAA and PCI. Universities deal with a variety of data. The crown jewels for a university is the data that it is the custodian of, and that data comes from the students. That data may be a student's personal reports. That data may be a student's health records. That data may be payments from credit cards. That data has to be protected.” She shares security best practices and defense strategies for protecting university assets. She recommends practicing network segmentation in order to prevent a compromise in one causing additional problems in another. “Centralizing all the logs in one location greatly simplifies a lot of processes.
