Mike Cessario founded Liquid Death and it became a $700 million dollar business against all odds. The crazy thing is that Liquid Death is not some trendy energy drink - It's canned water. Now this isn't the most conventional founder/CEO story. Mike grew up playing in punk rock and heavy metal bands and eventually became a graphic designer and advertising creative director. While working on campaigns for big clients like Netflix, he learned tricks for capturing people's attention and getting them hooked on a product. But it wasn't until he noticed a subset of people in the hardcore music scene who were vocal about not drinking or doing drugs that he had his "a-ha" moment. Combining this with a sneaky little trick he saw musicians doing with water in energy drink cans, Mike Cessario came up with the idea for the most hardcore water out there - Liquid Death. This canned water with the tagline "murder your thirst" and features skulls and crazy designs. It became an instant hit. Being a true underdog, Mike took on the big guns in the water market dominated by billion-dollar companies. Find out how he did it by learning about Mike Cessario and how he made Liquid Death a reality.

When Bob Parsons was growing up, no one seemed to think he'd amount to much. He was born into a lower-middle-class family in Baltimore in the 50's. With parents who were gamblers (not the winning kind), he seriously lacked career role models. Bob failed the fifth grade, and just barely graduated high school (his teachers let him pass because he joined the marines). None of that stopped him from starting two thriving businesses, which he sold for billions. It's an amazing underdog victory story. Check out this episode to learn how Bob made it happen. It's easy to scale a software business, but it's so much harder to achieve scale with a clothing company. Check out this episode to learn how Ben did it. P.S. You probably know Barbara Corcoran as Shark Tank's straight-shooting business lady, who tells it like it is. But don't be fooled by her powerful persona. Though she's a true power player, she overcame many hurdles and setbacks to become a millionaire. Her childhood wasn't easy. She has dyslexia, and back when she was growing up, learning disorders weren't treated with compassion. She also shared a small two-bedroom suite with nine siblings! Talk about starting life with the odds stacked against you! As she started building her real estate career, her business business partner (and boyfriend) left her for her secretary. He even told Barbara that ‘she'd never succeed without him'. (Boy, was he ever wrong!). Not only that, but she almost lost the business during the "Black Monday" aftermath, and had to navigate a lawsuit against Donald Trump. But in the end, she beat the odds, and became the queen of New York real estate. This is a story about staying strong and overcoming the obstacles on the road to success. Check out this episode to learn how she did it. P.S. I've adjusted most dollar figures in the story to 2022 dollars to make the story flow better. The $66 million deal amount was not adjusted. Sam Bankman-Fried is one of the youngest billionaires on the Forbes 100 list. With a current net worth of over $24 billion, he accumulated all that wealth in less than 5 years. Instead of splurging on yachts and private islands, he drives a Toyota Corolla and has pledged to give up the vast majority of his net worth to charity. It's amazing to think that his wealth journey started as recently as 2017 - and he earned the majority of it before he turned 30! It all started when he set up a Bitcoin arbitrage trade that ended up making him over $20 million dollars in a matter of weeks. But it wasn't smooth sailing all the way. He overcame some tricky roadblocks to set up this unique trade and make millions. Check out this episode to learn how he did it. Naval Ravikant is a Venture Capitalist who's always been ahead of the curve. Based in Silicon Valley, he invested in companies like Uber and Twitter long before they were household names. But apart from being a shrewd investor, he's also a great thinker. This guy's like a modern-day philosopher. Being a reading machine, he consumes content from all sorts of different industries and connects the dots in unique ways. One of Naval's greatest contributions is his concept of the “four types of leverage”. But first of all, what exactly is leverage? In finance 101 leverage is described as borrowing to invest. But more broadly, it's a way of taking small actions to get big results. It's essentially how a little efforts compound into huge outcomes. Naval's framework states that there are four broad categories of leverage: Labour Capital Code Media He's used each of these at different stages of his life to accomplish big things. In this episode, we'll take a look at Naval's story and explore the power behind the four types of leverage. Jesse Livermore was the best trader you've never heard of. Not only did he achieve billionaire status from his investments, but he also has a fascinating back story. His life played out like a movie, from humble beginnings growing up on a farm, to outsmarting mobsters at gambling parlors! Jesse's trading skills took him from a shack in Massachusetts to a mansion in New York. And, his fierce ambition and work ethic fueled his rise to the pinnacle of financial success. This guy's ability to bounce back from adversity is truly inspiring. He lost and gained fortunes several times over in his career. The lessons we can take from him are timeless–and clearly, I'm not the only one who feels this way. Hedge fund billionaire Paul Tudor Jones is a huge Jesse Livermore fan. Any new employees joining Paul's hedge fund automatically receive a book that teaches Jesse's methods. Why does Paul do this? It's because some things don't change. Greed and fear played a role in the markets a hundred years ago, and they'll play a role a hundred years from now. Jesse's story explores both emotions to full effect. Check out this episode to learn more about Jesse's incredible rags-to-riches story in the finance world. Did you know that at one point Volkswagen (VW) became the most valuable company in the world? It was a surprising event that caught virtually everyone off guard. You might be asking, “How the heck does a capital-intensive automaker become the #1 company in the world?”. Well, it's a fascinating story that involves short sellers, hedge funds and a secret plan by the Porsche family to take over VW. It also resulted in short sellers getting burned to the tune of €20 billion. Whoa! There's a research paper that examined what happened. It was written by Professor Eric Nowak and his 3 colleagues. Professor Nowak and his team went through piles of court documents to get the raw data. They painstakingly put all the info together and analyzed it to figure out what actually went on. A little about Professor Nowak: He's Professor of Finance and Head of the Institute of Finance at the Università della Svizzera italiana. He's also held visiting appointments at lots of leading universities including Stanford and the University of Chicago. A huge thank you to Professor Eric Nowak for joining me on this episode. So everyone knows that Warren Buffett is an investing GOAT. I mean, his results speak for themselves, right? Okay, fair enough, but did you know that he still lives in the same house he bought in 1958? How many billionaires do you know who do still live in the same house they got in their late 20s! I have a simple money philosophy; If Warren does something, there's a good reason for it. In this episode we'll explore the story of how he bought his house, and why he's still hanging out in suburban Omaha instead of shacking up in Manhattan's billionaire's row. We'll also cover some research from a book called “The millionaire next door”. This book was written by two PhD guys (Thomas J. Stanley and William D. Danko). They were basically trying to figure out “Who are America's millionaires, and what are their habits?” I learned a lot from reading their book, and I'm excited to share my findings with you. Maybe you haven't heard of MJ, but trust me, his story is worth paying attention to. We'll take a look at how he started (and later sold) a website where people could book limo services all over the country. Of course it wasn't a straight path to success …it was a bumpy road along the way. One of the things we can learn from MJ are the core thought patterns that allowed him to become financially free. His financial freedom didn't happen by accident, he was focused on making his dream lifestyle a reality. And today he has this lifestyle where his income is completely independent from his time, so he's in a position where he can spend his time doing exactly what he wants instead of worrying about how he's going to get his next paycheck. There are some great golden nuggets of wisdom in this episode, so I definitely recommend you check it out. In investing it's really important to separate out luck vs skill. Luck is fleeting, but skill is where investors can get better investment performance over time. Michael Mauboussin wrote a great book on the topic called “The Success Equation”. In this week's episode we cover a few takeaways from the book and we discuss how investors can shift from relying on luck to using skill. We also discuss the importance of having good decision-making, and that bad results don't always mean a flawed decision-making process. Human beings have lots of “mental blind spots” that make successful investing hard. Dan Ariely wrote about a bunch of these in his book “Predictably Irrational”. There's lots of great info in the book that shows you how these blind spots work. In this episode, We'll explore two of these blind spots: Endowment Effect Arbitrary Coherence The Endowment Effect causes people to fall in love with the things they own ...and if you fall in love with an investment, it's hard to be rational about it. Arbitrary Coherence is all about how prices become "sticky" in your brain. That can cause you to start thinking that something is a good deal when it really isn't. Those concepts might seem a bit fuzzy, but in the episode, we explore them in depth with lots of stories and examples. Check out the episode to learn about how they work, and tips on avoiding their subconscious influence. The late 60's and early 70's were the "go-go" years on Wall Street. You had a massive boom in the number of young people joining the investment industry, and there was a group of 50 companies called the Nifty Fifty. These were supposed to be "one decision companies" that you could buy at any price and still get rich. The logic was that their amazing earnings growth would make up for their high price...
