As 2024 draws to a close, the mood on Wall Street is very jolly. Stocks are back to trading near all-time highs. Positive sentiment -- be it among investors, businesses or consumers -- is suddenly spiking. Is such exuberance merited? Should we expect the market's good times to continue rolling in 2025? Should we be preparing for better or worse conditions ahead? To find out, we turn to the experience and wisdom of financial advisor Ted Oakley, managing partner & founder of Oxbow Advisors. As the stock market trades at all-time highs, is this a great time to continue to ride the bull rally? Or has the getting been too good for too long? Is it instead now a good time to take gains and wait for a correction? Today we'll hear answers to these questions from Chance Finucane, Chief Investment Office at Oxbow Advisors. Oxbow Advisors is a financial advisory firm founded by Ted Oakley that specializes in the needs of high net worth clients. As Ted's CIO, Chance will share with us what kind of market outlook the firm sees ahead for the rest of the year and how it is positioning its client's assets for it. Among other risks, Oxbow is watching the liquidity situation very closely. Globally, fiscal stimulus grew substantially in 2023. But in 2024, its growth is predicted to be much more anemic -- even negative -- across the world. That could be a game changer, triggering both economic slowdown and a potential market correction. To find out, we turn to the experience and wisdom of financial advisor Ted Oakley, managing partner & founder of Oxbow Advisors. Ted has over 40 years experience helping clients, mostly high net worth families, protect and build wealth through good times and bad. We'll find out how he's currently positioning his clients assets for the coming year. Ted is worried that the "worst part" of the bear market that started in 2022 still lies ahead, likely in the first two quarters of 2024. When the road ahead is uncertain, there's no wiser choice than to listen to those with experience - who have seen enough market cycles to judge what's most likely to happen next. Today we're fortunate to welcome financial advisor Ted Oakley, managing partner & founder of Oxbow Advisors. Ted has over 40 years experience helping clients, mostly high net worth families, protect and build wealth through good times and bad. Here in mid 2023, we'll ask him if the current powerful bull rally means the coast is clear for investors to pile back into the markets again, or if the bear market that attacked last year is simply drawing as much capital into the markets as it can before it strikes again. And we'll find out how he's currently positioning his clients assets for what he sees lying ahead. ************************************************* At Wealthion, we show you how to protect and build your wealth by learning from the world's top experts on finance and money. Links are in the notes. Mr. Oakley's primary philanthropic interest is helping children. A good friend based in Asia introduced me to Ted's son Keys who was kind enough to help set up this recording. My friend is both an inheritor and wealth creator himself, and curious about the topics we discuss today, I soon discovered that Ted had interviewed my dear friend Jay Hughes, an advisor to wealthy families, and author, who was an early guest on my show. Today, Ted and I will discuss the peculiar challenges and opportunities associated with staying rich. We are reminded that any fortune that can be made, can be lost. We talk about the importance of keeping family stories alive. Ted points out how there are over a million people in the US with a net worth of $10-$15 million, yet they drop out from this group regularly. We investigate the reasons. It's music to my ears when Ted emphasizes the need to have liquidity, idle cash on the side. We end with the topic of the next generation. Ted was a real delight to talk to; we found many overlaps with how we think at Sicart Associates. I also learned a lot, I hope you do too. Markets have been sinking after Fed Chair Jerome Powell's tough talk at Jackson Hole last week. Getting inflation under control remains the Fed's top priority, and it's going to be a real challenge. It will require tough medicine that's going to require "pain", to use Powell's words. In rocky times like these, it helps to seek the counsel of advisors who have experienced many past market cycles -- what are they lessons they've learned that may help us better navigate our wealth through what's to come? Which is why we're fortunate today to talk with money manager Ted Oakley, founder and Managing Partner of investment advisory firm Oxbow Advisors. https://youtu.be/t-LskifjKA4

Tom welcomes back Ted Oakley, Managing Director and Founder of Oxbow Advisors. Ted believes the Fed will push the economy into a recession to mitigate inflationary pressures. He explains how rising rates effect many markets and economy. These rate hikes are slowing the housing market. In addition, consumers are beginning to cut back on expenses and many will start losing jobs as the economy contracts. He discusses how some investors take loans out against their stock portfolio. This area of credit is huge, but exact figure are hard to come by. These loans can become problematic when stocks decline significantly. The Fed continues to put the wrong people in positions. Too many lack business experience, and instead we have mostly academics. These types are completely disconnected from the man on the street. He notes that the Fed's calls are only correct about a quarter of the time. Any time there are major bubbles, the cause is usually massive leverage. Eventually, all the bubbles will have to deleverage until they reach normal levels. The E.U. is composed of many countries with different economic capabilities, which is difficult to balance. ESG policies have definitely worsened the energy problems in the West. Shutting down pipelines while over regulating the carbon energy is a direct attack on that industry. It did not have to be this way if we had better leadership. If bond markets begin to seize up, the Fed will intervene because that would lock up the economy. In addition, there is a lot of political pressure to alleviate inflation before November. He cautions that the current rallies should be sold at least until investors are completely sick of these markets. We're in an incredibly unprecedented speculative time, and this means the pain will continue for a considerable period. Lastly, Ted discusses how China will deal with their real estate situation. Even though both stocks and bonds have had a dismal start to the year, most investors aren't panicking yet. Instead, there's a lot of talk about the bottom being near. And hope that much of the recent losses can be regained. That kind of optimism isn't seen in a real bear market, cautions seasoned financial advisor Ted Oakley, Managing Partner and founder of Oxbow Advisors. SBTV spoke with Ted Oakley, Managing Partner and Founder of Oxbow Advisors, about what is real wealth in times of war and great uncertainty. Ted sees gold as the only real help in war, not any of the 9000 crypto coins out there.
Ted Oakley, the founder of Oxbow Advisors and co-founder of its predecessor firm, HPOAdvisors, has over thirty-five years of experience in the investment industry. Topics discussed in this conversation include weaknesses in the global economy, inflation, the importance of cash flow, gold, growth stocks, and currency debasement.
The biggest risk facing investors right now is the unsustainable stock market valuations that will eventually mean revert, said Ted Oakley, founder and partner of Oxbow Advisors.
Tom welcomes Ted Oakley, Managing Director and Founder of Oxbow Advisors, back to the show. Ted discusses the rampant speculative activity in the stock markets. Many investors are buying anything and are hoping that it will all work out. However, Ted says "It isn't different this time." China has cut-off their potash and phosphate sales which will keep the pressure on fertilizer prices. There portfolio includes agricultural products along with other commodities that will do well in an inflationary environment. In the early 80s you couldn't buy a house because rates were too high and down payments were large. Today, prices for homes are overpriced and eventually this should revert. Ted give us his thoughts on Fed Chair Powells renomination and where their policy may head from here. Inflation is likely to persist at a higher than normal rate for some time. Inflation in basic necessities like food, energy, and housing will persist. Indexes have become a growing fad and owning these mean you hold a basket of companies. Many of these companies are not profitable. When the bear market comes these indexes will perform badly. Market correction effects will spill over into real estate and the economy. When people feel poorer they aren't as likely to buy a new home. Many retirees are holding too many stocks when they should be holding more cash. He discusses what they consider to be reasonable passive investments. Gold plays an important role in some of their strategies and he believes gold will make new highs in 2022. Today's politicans have no idea what a trillion dollar represents. Negative real rates are probably going to stay which will be good for gold. Ted is not against green energy but governments seem overly ambitious in their targets. Lastly Ted outlines what they look for in companies. They want those with good growth potential over longer timeframes. They aim for returns of at least three points over inflation. What's the government's solution to an economy drowning in too much debt? More debt, of course! Well, they say there's no bad situation that the government can't make even worse. That seems to be the case right now. The government's extreme intervention has resulted in an economic and financial system now dependent upon ever more stimulus. But suddenly, there are a number of government initiatives -- the Federal Reserve taper, the fiscal stimulus package, a new tax bill, the debt ceiling showdown, and China's economic and regulatory tightening that's leading to crises like Evergrande -- that look like they will reduce the flow of stimulus going forward and create a drag on global growth. To predict what the impact will be on both the economy at large as well as the financial markets, we turn to Ted Oakley, founder and Managing Partner of investment advisory firm Oxbow Advisors. Tom welcomes Ted Oakley, Managing Director and Founder of Oxbow Advisors, to the show. Ted explains his upbringing and why that led him to form two of Texas's largest foster child foundations. As a child, he had to work starting from six years old. Fortunately, he was able to get very educated and eventually ended up in New York City. Ted discusses how the upcoming job numbers may improve over the past months performance but notes that it's hard to measure real employment numbers accurately. The jobs and family act need to be passed so that society at large obtain some return on that money. We need to stop paying people to stay home. Based on discussion with those on the front lines of the housing market, he feels that we are past the point of peak mortgage growth. Ted outlines three possible scenarios for inflation and discusses which seem the most likely. He also explains how the PPI acts as a measure of wholesale prices and why it tends to be more accurate than the CPI. Good companies will already pay their employees well to prevent turnover and maintain a good product. Companies that don't take this approach will experience pain as wages spike. Oxbows equity strategy is to find companies that have 15% growth potential over the next five years. Few companies can sustain that growth rate. In addition, they try to find companies that are also at a discount along with a low debt burden. You want gains to be built on gains, and selling stocks means paying taxes, so it's good when you can hold equities for an extended period. He explains the role of gold in their conservative and high-income portfolios at reducing risk. He likes many miners because their balance sheets and cash flow have improved massively. You want companies with cash on hand and those well-positioned to take advantage of metal prices as they move higher. They like the royalty side of the market and combine those with a few good resource equities. The end of this current bull market cycle will be marked by “significant damage,” said Ted Oakley, founder and partner of Oxbow Advisors, who have currently allocated 35% of their investments into cash.Oakley told David Lin that one of main factors behind the stock market rally in the last 10 years has been quantitative easing from the Federal Reserve, so any tightening from the central bank will likely trigger a market correction.
