Greetings Glocal Citizens! We're picking up more momentum toward African progress sharing the stories of dynamic diasporans making impact in the reparatory justice space. On the eve of Africa Day, I attended the premier screening of Omitted, a short film exploring reparatory justice and the legacies of colonialism by Lavinya Stennett, founder of The Black Curriculum. Raised in the UK with Jamaican roots, she founded The Black Curriculum in 2019 at age 22 shortly after finishing her studies at London's School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) which included a study abroad program in New Zealand. Her learning and experience with indigenous communities in New Zealand joined with her activism as a student at SOAS are the framework for the craft of truthtelling that is at the core of The Black Curriculum. Believing in the power of education, social impact and youth social entrepreneurship, her work has been recognised globally from Vogue and GQ to the historic Freedom of the City of London Award in 2024. She also has written on social and cultural themes throughout the African diaspora for outlets including the Guardian, Black Ballad, Quartz Africa. Expanding her entrpreneurship journey, in 2024 Lavinya co-founded the Racial Impact Collective, an initiative supporting social entrepreneurs and seeking equity in the grant making world. The future is brighter with knowing that there is a generation fo social innovators with creative talents like Lavinya committed to justice for marginalized peoples. Did you know that yesterday was Africa Day?
This Africa Day coincides with the launch of a new book, 'The Black Atlantic's Triple Burden: Slavery, Colonialism, and Reparations' by Professor Adekeye Adebajo, a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for the Advancement of Scholarship at the University of Pretoria. The book examines calls for reparations in Africa, the Caribbean, and the Americas for European-led slavery and colonialism; - what many now regard to have constituted crimes against humanity. But with some countries around the world, led by the USA administration, now taking a dim view of the concepts of Diveristy, Equity and Inclusion, many are wondering whether Africa's struggle for justice and equality will ever come to fruition...To talk to us about Africa Day and it's link to his new book, Bongiwe Zwane spoke to Professor Adekeye Adebaj ......

Daily Anglican Prayer - Sunday Morning – 25th May 2025 Readings NRSV: Psalm 2; Revelation 3.14-22; Led by Felicity Scott, an Anglican prayer minister in Queensland, Australia. The full prayer transcript is available by going to this episode on the Podcast website. https://dailyprayeranglicanprayerbookforaustralia.podbean.com Welcome to Sunday Morning prayer. We proclaim the Good News of our Lord Jesus Christ: GOD in his infinite mercy, forgives all sins, and through our baptism in the name of our Saviour, Jesus Christ, we are given a rebirth into new life, free from the burden of all sin. ALLELUIA With faithfulness we respond to the good news: We acknowledge Christ as our saviour and accept with gratitude, that we are forgiven for all wrong doings, past and present. To honour the gift of forgiveness, we release our burden of guilt and rise up to live in the glory of God forever more. Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Blessed be God forever. Let us Pray. 1 This is the day that the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118.24 Glory to God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit: as in the beginning, so now, and for ever. Amen. 3 The opening Canticle Oh come let us sing out to the Lord. let us shout in triumph to the rock of our salvation. Let us come before his face with thanksgiving. And cry out to him joyfully in psalms. For the Lord is a great God. and a great king above all gods. In his hands are the depths of the earth. and the peaks of the mountains are his also. The sea is his and he made it. His hands moulded dryland. Come let us worship and bow down. And kneel before the Lord our maker. For he is the Lord our god. We are his people and the sheep of his pasture. Today if only you would hear his voice: “Do not harden your hearts as Israel did in the wilderness.” “When your forebears tested me.” “Put me to proof though they had seen my works.” “Forty years long I loathe that generation and said.” “It is a people who err in their hearts.” “For they do not know my ways.” “Of whom I swore in my wrath.” “They shall not enter my rest.” 3 The Opening Prayer The night has passed and the day lies open before us; let us pray with one heart and mind. Silence may be kept. As we rejoice in the gift of this new day, so may the light of your presence, O God, set our hearts on fire with love for you; now and for ever. Amen. 4 The Psalms as appointed. A pause is observed after each. Psalm 2 1 Why are the nations in tumult: and why do the peoples cherish a vain dream? 2 The kings of the earth rise up and the rulers conspire together: against the Lord and against his anointed, saying, 3 ‘Let us break their bonds asunder: let us throw off their chains from us.' 4 He that dwells in heaven shall laugh them to scorn: the Lord will hold them in derision. 5 Then will he speak to them in his wrath, and terrify them in his fury: ‘I, the Lord, have set up my king on Zion my holy hill.' 6 I will announce the Lord's decree, that which he has spoken: ‘You are my son, this day have I begotten you. 7 ‘Ask of me, and I will give you the nations for your inheritance: the uttermost parts of the earth for your possession. 8 ‘You may break them with a rod of iron: and shatter them in pieces like a potter's vessel.' 9 Now therefore be wise, O kings: be advised, you that are judges of the earth. 10 Serve the Lord with awe, and govern yourselves in fear and trembling: lest he be angry, and you perish in your course. 11 For his wrath is quickly kindled: blessed are those that turn to him for refuge. 5 At the end of the (last) pause there may follow Lord God, whose blessed Son rose in triumph and set us free: grant us the fullness of life he promised us, that through the Holy Spirit our hearts may possess him whom our eyes cannot see, the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 6 One or two Readings from the Bible as appointed. NT Reading Revelation 3.14-22 14 ‘And to the angel of the church in Laodicea write: The words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the origin of God's creation: 15 ‘I know your works; you are neither cold nor hot. I wish that you were either cold or hot. 16 So, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I am about to spit you out of my mouth.17 For you say, “I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing.” You do not realize that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked.18 Therefore I counsel you to buy from me gold refined by fire so that you may be rich; and white robes to clothe you and to keep the shame of your nakedness from being seen; and salve to anoint your eyes so that you may see. 19 I reprove and discipline those whom I love. Be earnest, therefore, and repent. 20 Listen! I am standing at the door, knocking; if you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to you and eat with you, and you with me. 21 To the one who conquers I will give a place with me on my throne, just as I myself conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne. 22 Let anyone who has an ear listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches.' The Gospel Reading is from John 11.38-44, Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ: 38Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. 39Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, already there is a stench because he has been dead four days.” 40Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?” 41So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upward and said, “Father, I thank you for having heard me. 42I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me.” 43When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.” The reading is followed by May your word live in us and bear much fruit to your Glory. 7 The Canticle, The Song of Zechariah (Benedictus) Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel: who has come to his people and set them free. The Lord has raised up for us a mighty Saviour: born of the house of his servant David. Through the holy prophets, God promised of old: to save us from our enemies, from the hands of all who hate us, To show mercy to our forebears: and to remember his holy covenant. This was the oath God swore to our father Abraham: to set us free from the hands of our enemies, Free to worship him without fear: holy and righteous before him, all the days of our life. And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High: for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, To give his people knowledge of salvation: by the forgiveness of their sins. In the tender compassion of our God: the dawn from on high shall break upon us, To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death: and to guide our feet into the way of peace. Luke 1.68–79 8 The Apostles creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit born of the virgin Mary. suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. 9 The Prayers Lord have mercy. Christ have mercy. Lord have mercy. 10 The LORDs prayer Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen. 10 The Collect of the Day Sixth Sunday of Easter Great and loving God, your will for us in your Son Jesus is the peace which the world cannot give, your abiding gift, the Advocate he promised. Calm all troubled hearts, dispel every fear, and keep us steadfast in love and faithful to your word. Grant this through Jesus Christ, the firstborn from the dead, who lives with you now and always in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen. Prayer of the Week Sixth Sunday of Easter Eternal God, whose Son Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life: grant that we may walk in his way, rejoice in his truth, and share his risen life; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen 11 Intercessions and Thanksgivings may be made according to local custom and need. Let us pray Almighty God, through your Son Jesus Christ you gave many excellent gifts to your apostles and commanded them to feed your flock. Bless all Archbishops and bishops in the Anglican Church. So, to fill them with your truth, and clothe them with holiness, that as pastors of your Church they may diligently preach your word, and modernise their teachings of the people, to the glory of your name. In this episode, Addy Awofisayo, the Head of Music, Sub-Saharan Africa at YouTube, takes us on a fascinating deep-dive into the African music universe and the far-reaching impact of digitalization on African music that has just commenced. After her early-stage career stint in finance and what Addy calls a "quarter-life crisis", she knew she wanted a career in the creative industry. Still, the possibility of a career in the music industry never occurred to her. She made her first inroads into the media and content creation industry before joining YouTube, where the potential of then-booming music and especially the afrobeat industry on the continent, opened up the music sector as a viable career path.Addy describes how she carved out and seized the opportunity to become YouTube's first-ever Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa. From an immersion trip to Nigeria with Lyor Cohen, the Head of Global Music at Google and YouTube and five senior leadership members on the music team organized by Addy to obtain new insights into realizing the potential and diversity within the African music industry, she highlights the journey leading to the creation of this new position at YouTube and how she interprets this new role.Addy shares some highlights and projects she spearheaded in her new role, such as a fundraiser for covid relief efforts through a live African Benefit Concert by African music stars out of their homes on Africa Day and the live broadcast of Burna Boy's show at the Madison Square Garden via YouTube.Beyond the great strides of Addy in her role and the African music industry as a whole, we discuss additional measures undertaken by YouTube to strengthen the African creative sector ranging from training to funding and much more. Despite further initiatives, the one factor identified by Addy as the holy grail of unlocking the African creative industry both from a creation and consumption perspective is data availability and data cost.Addy further highlights the potential of digitalization through examples of artists and their management teams using YouTube's analytics to make business decisions and how digitalization has broken down entry barriers for content creators, enabling younger artists and female artists to circumvent gatekeepers and transform the African music industry.Looking into the future, Addy discusses how the focus is shifting from just the artist to an entire industry and how she supports the ecosystem's development and new opportunities created by that development. The Gambian government says it is ready to prosecute former President Yahya Jammeh for what it called "the myriad of crimes" he committed during his rule. It was responding to a report by the Truth Reconciliation and Reparations Commission, which investigated abuses that took place during his 22 years in power. Plus, the US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer says it will make all its patented drugs available on a not-for-profit basis to low income countries. And May 25 is Africa Day, set aside to commemorate the founding of the Organisation of African Unity, which later became the African Union. But do Africans care?
African Day, also known as African Liberation Day is the day where Africans across the world celebrate the hard-fought freedom from colonial powers. On 25 May 1963, representatives of thirty African nations met in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, hosted by Emperor Haile Selassie. By then more than two-third of the continent had achieved independence, mostly from imperial European states. At this meeting, the then Organisation of African Unity (OAU) was founded, with the initial aim to encourage the decolonisation of Angola, Mozambique, South Africa, Namibia, and Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe). The organisation pledged to support the work conducted by freedom fighters, and remove military access to colonial nations. A charter was set out which sought to improve the living standards across member states. Emperor Selassie exclaimed, "May this convention of union last 1,000 years. Africa Day continues to be celebrated both in Africa and around the world, mostly on 25 May. In 2021 African communities across the world decided to come together to celebrate and commemorate African day on Clubhouse (CH) - an audio based social media platform. A 24 hours commemoration marathon was hosted in the “Africa Day Club” on CH. The event brought together Africans residing in the continent and Africans in the rest of the world. Africa Day 2021 also featured incredible speakers including Her Excellency Ambassador Arikana Chihombori Quao.
