In this episode, Dr. Farina King is joined by Dr. Gavin A. Healey, a contributing author of COVID-19 in Indian Country and Assistant Professor of Anthropology and Applied Indigenous Studies at Northern Arizona University (NAU). Gavin highlights how Indigenous graffiti and muralism emerged as vital tools of community care and resistance during the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing from his chapter, “Native American Graffiti and Aerosol Muralism of the Pandemic,” Gavin addresses works by artists such as Ivan Lee (Diné), whose mural of a masked Diné woman sends a COVID-19 warning, and Jemez Pueblo artist Jaque Fragua, whose pieces amplify Indigenous sovereignty and survival. Photographer Kayla Jackson's documentation of pandemic murals adds another dimension to the discussion. Gavin reflects on how these public art forms became acts of visual sovereignty, cultural expression, and collective healing in Indian Country, "demistifying" aerosol muralism.Gavin A. Healey holds an interdisciplinary Ph.D. in American Indian Studies from the University of Arizona with an emphasis in Native Art and public art. His expertise in community-based participatory research and mixed method design aspires to provide agency to individual and community voices with a focus on Native graffiti muralism. This work with collaborators focuses on Native art and Native public art as dialectics of place-making and Native sovereignty. Coupled with his universities' duties, Gavin has spent his career working with Native artists and communities, urban and reservation, as an artist assistant on public murals, curator of museum and gallery exhibitions, and a conscientious ally in community wellbeing. His doctoral research produced the first empirical data collected on Native public art through public surveying. He is working on a forthcoming edited volume with Indigenous artists. Episode-2599 - In this episode, Vinnie Tortorich and Chris Shaffer delve into the controversial topic of sunscreen, challenging conventional wisdom about sunscreen while exploring some alternatives to sun protection and protective clothing options. https://vinnietortorich.com/2025/01/alternatives-to-chemical-sun-protection-episode-2599 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS YOU CAN WATCH ALL THE PODCAST EPISODES ON YOUTUBE - Alternatives to Chemical Sun Protection Vinnie expresses concerns about sunscreen chemicals and their potential health effects. Chris Shaffer joined the discussion, bringing research insights about sunscreen ingredients and their impact on humans and the environment. (00:04:00) Vinnie discussed his long-standing concerns about chemical sunscreens, particularly oxybenzone and avobenzone. Chris provided research findings about these chemicals' effects on coral reefs and human health, recommending zinc oxide as a safer alternative. (00:09:00) Many of the chemicals in some sunscreens are hormone disruptors. (00:10:00) Aerosol versions of sunscreens are even more concern. (00:14:00) Mineral sunscreens such as zinc oxide can be good, but titanium dioxide can be a concern. (00:15:00) Titanium dioxide is used in food and other products to brighten and whiten the product. Even in small particles, titanium dioxide can cause cancers. (00:17:00) Zinc oxide is the best bet. When do you need to apply sunscreen? (00:21:50) Reapply every couple of hours, at least. Chris presented research showing that dietary factors like beta carotene, lycopene, and vitamins C and E can enhance skin protection from UV damage. Vinnie shared anecdotal evidence about dietary changes affecting sunburn susceptibility. (00:23:41) They discussed various clothing brands and products that offer UV protection, including Tilley hats, Coolibar shirts, and ExOfficio clothing. Monday. Podcast day. Bubbles Mushrooms. Brian is back again this week for his next visit to the program and we're gonna talk about different things related to his visit. Today is Edward's birthday again so we play him his yearly Chuck E. Cheese For My Birthday song that he likes & hear stories of how Katie ruined the whole day for him on purpose by not ordering him is favorite cake and breaking his car. Brian's whole life sucks apparently because the Butt Corporation he works at got bought out by some different Butt People and his toys are too fancy to mass produce. Thankfully he's making the toys less fancy so everyone can love them just as much as we do. Our number one viewer Renee checks in with another viewer email about some questionable shows from the 1990's that everyone loved, we get into some Mythbusters talk and eat some delicious treats from foreign lands that Brian is making us try. Some of Brian's treats are chicken flavored and some of them used to be taco chips or something. This week's special activity is a talk topic about things that people in other countries think are weird about America. Like super-size drinks, aerosol cheese and really big cars. Murica. From poetry to music to movies, we're always hearing about the “deep blue sea.” But the seas aren't always deep blue. And sometimes, they're not blue at all. They can be green, brown, or other colors. And each color can tell us something about what's happening in that part of the sea.Understanding what the colors are telling us is one goal of PACE—Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, Ocean Ecosystem—a NASA satellite that launched in February.[3, 2, 1, booster ignition ... Full-power engines and liftoff of the Falcon 9 and PACE—helping keep pace with our ever-changing ocean and atmosphere...] The mission is studying how the oceans and atmosphere interact, tracking their health, charting marine resources, and more. And ocean color plays a big role in all of that. The water can be tinted by tiny organisms known as phytoplankton. Some of them turn the water green—a result of the chlorophyll they use to convert sunlight to energy. Plankton attract fish and other large animals. So keeping an eye on the color can help scientists track the health of fisheries.Massive blooms of some types of algae, on the other hand, can stain the water brown or red. They may use up much of the oxygen in the water, turning a region into a “dead zone” where not many other organisms can live. They can also produce toxins that make shellfish dangerous to eat. So tracking the blooms—by looking for their colors from space—can help keep people safe.

#030 Rebroadcast Melissa and Jam continue to sniff out the chemistry of smell, focusing this week on bad smells. Why are we so good at smelling bad smells? Why do they haunt us at night? Why are some bad smells so strong and long lasting, while many great smells are subtle and temporary. What's in a smell? "That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet." When an escort's mob-connected client mumbles upcoming hits in his sleep, she tells David, who in turn uses the intel to catch the killers. Or stop them before they commit the crime, which is sort of like the first draft of “Minority Report” minus eye-replacement surgery. Soon David is the toast of the town, beloved by the police, the mayor, and the entire city of LA. In fact, the only person who isn't happy is Maddie, who feels having sources and employing data is cheating when it comes to detective work. Oh, will these two ever get along? Well, briefly, until Maddie punches David so hard he goes through a wall. It all comes together in an episode that will having you asking “What?” saying “But…” and knowing that using Pet Shop Boys' “West End Girls” must have been pretty pricey in the mid-1980s.As always, this episode is brought to you by Zini's Italian Restaurant.Theme Song: "Aerosol of my Love" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/
David is on the lam! When an elderly man frames David for his murder (to avoid his death being labeled a suicide and invalidate his life insurance because, uh, comedy), David does what every fugitive from the law would do if they were nine-years-old. He hides at his friend's house. Then he hides at his friend's place of work. Then he probably hides in a toy store or wherever they sell candy. Near his friend. Can Maddie prove David's innocence before her partner gradually, inadvertently makes it out of his own zip code? Kevin, Ces, and yet another notoriously ineffectual “Moonlighting” homicide detective are on the case! As the great John Mayer said, “Fathers be good to your daughters. Daughters .” Maddie learns this first hand as she is faced with the question of whether her father and her mother's husband are the same person. Corporeally? The answer is yes. More morally? That answer is no. Poppa Hayes is having an affair. The mother suspects it. Maddie denies it. And David—in a surprisingly mature and confusingly good way—finds it out. So down some champagne and discover if being a “good man” is enough to keep a family whole in “Every Daughter's Father Is A Virgin.”As always, this episode is brought to you by Zini's Italian Restaurant.Theme Song: "Aerosol of my Love" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/
Revenge is a dish best served cold—and lifeless—when a magician swears to kill his wife from beyond the grave, which is either a remarkable feat or stunning case of poor time management. But when the magician dies mid-act, his wife hires Maddie and David to watch over his corpse until it's cremated, to ensure he can't fulfill his promise. Does the body escape? Well, let's just say the Blue Moon Agency wouldn't be invited back to the Detective Ball if it weren't for a stunning third-act, tertiary character reveal as we dissect “In God We Strongly Suspect.”As always, this episode is brought to you by Zini's Italian Restaurant.Theme Song: "Aerosol of my Love" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/
Weary of a life of jelly donuts and Vanna White, Agnes longs for some excitement, some romance, and maybe, just maybe, a cruller instead. Little does she know Maddie's ticket to the Private Investigators' Ball (a Detective Prom minus the DJ playing "Forever Young") gives her all that and more as she is literally swept off her feet in a classic Hitchcock tale of mistaken identity, complete with attractive mysterious strangers, pursuing bad guys, dead bodies, prolonged applauded PDA, hot bowling AND laundry action, and our favorite supporting character since Liam in "A Christmas Frequency." Just how long can Agnes hold her breath? The World Meteorological Organization's report confirms last year had the highest temperatures on record and predicts an even hotter 2024. Also, NASA's new PACE satellite will study how these tiny creatures could affect Earth's climate, and how aerosols influence air quality.UN Report Confirms 2023 Was Hottest Year On RecordA new report from the United Nations' World Meteorological Organization shows that last year had the hottest average global temperatures since recording began 174 years ago. Ocean temperatures also reached a 65-year high last year, and 2024 is on track to be even hotter.Ira talks with Jason Dinh, climate editor at Atmos Magazine about that and other top science news of the week including cannibal birds, fighting Dengue fever with bacteria-infected mosquitos and the evolutionary benefit of whale menopause. Why This NASA Satellite Is Studying PlanktonDid you know you can see plankton … from space? Earlier this year, NASA launched a satellite to do exactly that. It's called PACE, which stands for Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, and ocean Ecosystem, and NASA hopes that the satellite can tell us more about how these tiny creatures interact with Earth's atmosphere and influence our climate. Some species of plankton, called phytoplankton, are microscopic plants that absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen. PACE has equipment that can identify different species of phytoplankton by the kind of light they give off, giving NASA real-time information about their location and population size, which can also aid fisheries and coastal communities when algal blooms occur.PACE will also study how aerosols affect air quality on Earth. Additional instruments on the satellite can differentiate between different kinds of aerosols by studying how they reflect light back into space, which will help scientists refine their climate models so that more accurate forecasts can be made.Ira Flatow talks to Dr. Ivona Cetinic, PACE's science lead for ocean biogeochemistry, about the satellite, her favorite species of plankton, and how the public can benefit from the data that the mission will provide.Transcripts for each segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. A client—who boasts he has an American Express card, has read Playboy, and has told all the right lies to woo women—asks the Blue Moon Detective Agency to find him the perfect wife, thereby hiring the two most ill-equipped people in matters of relationships to secure him romantic bliss. Within moments Maddie and David are disagreeing on what a "perfect" partner means, each choosing someone who fits their particular tastes, levels of maturity, and idea of 80s hot. But it turns out their client doesn't want someone. They just want some body. And so soon we're flying off to Connecticut, crashing funerals, and racing wheelchairs in an episode that proves the ideal person is out there so long as you don't feel like you have to kill everybody. As always, this episode is brought to you by Zini's Italian Restaurant.Theme Song: "Aerosol of my Love" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/
It's the holidays when Agnes gets the Christmas miracle of someone else's baby left under her tree. Well, hastily dropped in her clothes hamper. It's also a first draft of "Home Alone" when Maddie, David, and Agnes fight off criminals with toys. And it's also a season for good cheer with the arrival of Detective John Munch! Well, Richard Belzer, playing an entirely different character, thereby denying the show's entry into the expansive Munch Television Universe (MTU). It all comes together with Three Judicial Kings, a fourth-wall break, and every single person who's ever worked on "Moonlighting."As always, this episode is brought to you by Zini's Italian Restaurant.Theme Song: "Aerosol of my Love" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/
Milk bottle tops and aerosol cans are now a "no" for the recycle bin. But pizza boxes are fine, just take the pizza out. New recycling rules came into effect on the 1st of February. Are we complying with them? Reporter Jimmy Ellingham takes a look behind the scenes.
Ever wanted to be your own boss? How about not be a boss at all? Both paths are taken when Maddie sells the Blue Moon Detective Agency and David starts his own investigation service. But will the former duo patch up their differences in time to find a Rolodex—A DOUBLE Rolodex—containing the only record of high-level professional and personal contacts belonging to the boss of "Cousin Larry" himself, Mark Linn-Baker, before David prank-calls Gorbachev? Join Kevin and Ces for a fast, fun-filled episode as we travel back to a time when a lost index card could mean financial ruin and people could have easily Xeroxed pertinent business information but apparently didn't.As always, this episode is brought to you by Zini's Italian Restaurant.Theme Song: "Aerosol of my Love" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/
It's murder on the art studio floor when a mysterious painting of Maddie—complete with two hideous vases—results in the death of two brothers, the disappearance of the Blue Moon Detective Agency's slim profit margin, and the conclusion that if an artwork is about you then you can legally take it home, free of charge, no matter its crucial role in an ongoing police investigation. So pull up a chair, break out your copy of "Janson's History of Art," stay for the spectacular corpse outlines, and come to the realization David never shuts the hell up as we unveil "Portrait of Maddie."As always, this episode is brought to you by Zini's Italian Restaurant.Theme Song: "Aerosol of my Love" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/

Had a lovely Valentine's Day? Well forget it all! Because according to this week's "Moonlighting" episode it's St. Patrick's Day when a leprechaun (pause for a moment to allow for your Lucky Charms joke) asks Maddie and David to protect her from people after her pot of gold (pause for a moment to allow for you to ask "No, seriously. What's this week's episode about?") Is their client an actual leprechaun who may have killed a man with an ancient Irish curse said entirely in English? Is there really a pot of gold buried under a municipal rainbow in Los Angeles? Was it really that easy to enter an airport and ride the suitcase conveyor belt in 1985? This magic and curious child rearing never stops in this week's Moonies Never Say Die Hard.As always, this episode is brought to you by Zini's Italian Restaurant.Theme Song: "Aerosol of my Love" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/
SpaceX successfully launched NASA's Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem (PACE) mission, a nearly $1 billion environmental research satellite. This significant event took place early Thursday, despite previous threats to cancel the project. The mission's goal is to enhance our understanding of climate change by studying the intricate interactions among carbon, aerosols, and marine life on a global scale.
It's a sunny day for film noir in LA when David's ex—and "China Beach" star—Dana Delany comes waltzing into the Blue Moon Agency. David's heart goes pitter-patter but his ex has murder on her mind. And she's about to get away with it, too, thanks to the laziest police detective in investigative history. Will Maddie be able to put two and two together even when the detective wants to clock out by four, presumably to go home and watch "The Jetsons"? Tune into Season Two, Episode Six—"Knowing Her"— and you'll know how to sabotage your own balcony railing. And don't forget—it's Super Bowl weekend! So make sure to place your order with our sponsor Zini's Italian Restaurant, where their eggplant mascots can be your own disconcerting halftime show. Ep 209 - Are Cannabis Vape Pens Safe? In this episode of the Wake + Bake Podcast, cohosts Andrea Meharg and Corinne Tobias dive into what we do and don't know about the safety of cannabis vape pens. Vape pens are the second most popular product in the cannabis industry (the first being flower), and they grow in popularity every year. It's no wonder why. Cannabis vape pens are convenient, tasty, discreet, and potent, but are they as safe as people in the cannabis industry want you to believe? We went down the rabbit hole to find out: What's in cannabis vape pens? How are vape pens made? What was behind the wave of vape related lung injuries and deaths in 2019? Could vape pen batteries cause injury (or even death)? Are vape pens safer for your lungs than smoking cannabis? Is there a way to use a vape pen without any risk? This research yielded some of our most shocking findings since we started this podcast, so if you're a vape pen user, cannabis enthusiast, healthcare or wellness professional, you won't want to miss the verdict.
On this episode, Nate is joined by climate researcher Leon Simons to unpack recent trends in global heating during 2023 and potential explanations and subsequent projections for the coming year. While the connection between human emitted greenhouse gasses and global warming is scientifically agreed upon, the other complexities and feedbacks of our climate system are still just beginning to be understood. Today, Leon theorizes on the intensity of aerosol masking from particulates such as sulfur, based on the connection between recent changes in marine fuel sulfur requirements and corresponding climate data. How will the global trend towards aerosol reductions affect near and long term global heating? What does this catch-22 mean for potential future climate action and policy? How should we be thinking about creating a more simplified global system in response to the unknown unknowns of our potential future climate? About Leon Simons Leon Simons is a climate researcher and science communicator at the Club of Rome Netherlands and is studying the effects of reduction in sulfur emissions on regional and global radiation changes and its impact on global heating. Most recently he was a co-author of the paper Global Warming in the Pipeline with renowned climate scientist James Hansen. Leon is also the founder of Magic Ventures BV, which works to make clean cooking technologies accessible to people everywhere.
