We're digging deep this episode for the real story behind beer writer and social media influencer, Ale Sharpton. In addition to the story behind his pen name and his passion for the beer industry and promoting black brewers, host Nigel Woodberry and Nick Parker press with some hard-hitting questions — like why he prefers a tulip tasting glass no matter which beer he's sipping at the moment.
What's brewing in today's episode? Ale Sharpton pours over pioneers in the black brewers' field, highlights Atlanta's top black-owned breweries, documentaries, and festivals, shares beers' perfect pairings whether that be food or footwear, and seeks to connect communities with craft beer through BrewGether after tapping into the market with his own brand partnership with New Belgium brewery. If you've spent a significant time in the beer community, then you probably have heard the name Ale Sharpton. Back when I was a fledgling beer writer and looking for a mentor, I stumbled across Ale's work and immediately knew I needed to meet him. One unanswered email later, which I still tease him about, and we finally met at the inaugural Dames & Dregs Beer Festival. Since bombarding him with questions on how to break into the industry, Ale has been in my corner supporting me as I find my own way in beer. And he continues to serve as a model of what you can accomplish in the beer industry, through his partnership with New Belgium Brewing on the ongoing Piano Keys collaboration, as well as his involvement in the newly founded Leaders of the Brew School (a collective of BIPOC brewers, beer industry pros, and enthusiasts). Despite being a transplant, one thing's clear: Ale Sharpton loves Atlanta and its growing beer scene as much as this local. You can see it in the way he's repped this city for more than a decade. In how he makes it a point to support the people and breweries that make up its beer community, or in how he uses every chance to give back to the city through his charitable contributions. You'll hear him talk about how the beer city he dreamed of is blossoming now, where his journey into the industry has taken him so far, and how he turned a beer collab with New Belgium into an opportunity to donate to Black-owned nonprofits.
Mike Potter and Ale Sharpton are on a mission to bring craft beer to minority communities, and to bring those communities to craft beer Most of the 9,000+ craft breweries across the US are white-owned businesses with predominantly white clientele. There's nothing inherently wrong with that, and that doesn't automatically mean anyone is excluded. But, having representation of your community in anything can make you feel much more included. And that's where Ale and Mike come in. Mike Potter was one of the founders of Fresh Fest, America's first black craft beer festival. Since then he's founded Black Brew Culture to focus on the beer, culture, food, and lifestyle of craft beer. This month he'll kick off Blacktoberfest, a multi-city celebration of beer, food, art and entertainment. Ale Sharpton has been a Friend of the Show since we launched. He's joined us to talk about his adventures and articles as well as introducing us to Leaders of the Brew School. You may have seen Ale's writings for Thrillist, Craft Beer & Brewing, Forbes, and many others. His collaboration stout brewed with New Belgium, Piano Keys, is coming back soon for another release as well as some exciting events at the Great American Beer Festival. Proceeds from the brew benefit his non-profit, BrewGether.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This week on Beer Sessions Radio, Jimmy drives down South for an exclusive talk with the influencers of the Black craft beer movement — Ale Sharpton and Mike Potter. While Ale is a beer writer slash expert slash critic slash personality, Mike is also the founder of Black Brew Culture slash Fresh Fest slash Blacktoberfest. The gang will follow the rise of Black craft breweries as well as the details of Ale's and Mike's individual projects serving as steps on that ladder. The episode kicks off with a catch-up session with Ale and his journey in the Piano Keys World — his collaboration with New Belgium. He also gives us a peek into the growth of Atlanta's beer scene through legislation and minority brewing movements. We then get to meet Mike and two outstanding brewers from Blacktoberfest — Dirtbag Ale's Tito and Beale Street Brewing Company's Kelvin — along with their paths on the craft beer way and what they are brewing for this upcoming Blacktober. Additionally, we'll also dive into an analysis of the ups and downs of the Black beer scene in U.S.'s Southern cities, before coming back to Ale's efforts to shine light on the small guys. After the break, we'll come back with Kelvin's private session with his exclusive trivias and stories on Elvis. Jimmy attempts to make his endings consistent by going around the room asking people their favorite beers for the week, before Mike closes out with details about Blacktoberfest (October 1st in St. Louis, 15th in Atlanta, and 22nd in Durham). Hop in the car and tune into our show while driving to Blacktober, Jimmy's waiting for you!Photo Courtesy of Ale Sharpton.Heritage Radio Network is a listener supported nonprofit podcast network. Ale Sharpton: world-renowned beer authority, award-winning journalist, show host, social media extraordinaire, lobbyist, and pun master. To say he's is doing big things for the beer industry is the understatement of the decade. Ale has had his hands in the craft beer world for years and has helped shape the landscape of this industry. He left his home base of Atlanta and headed to the west coast to sit down with your host, Jeff Lozano, at Home Brew Mart. Sip along as they talk about everything this legend has accomplished and what he's up to next.

In ep 40, cohost Jamal Robinson and I interviewed Nathaniel Chapman, a professor of sociology and co-author of “Beer and Racism: How Beer Became White, Why It Matters, and the Movements to Change It.” Chapman said that he and his co-author David L. Brunsma have faced backlash for the book, including death threats, from parts of the web well known for white supremacists. We discuss why he wrote it, what it uncovered, and how we can overcome white fragility and make some honest change in the beer industry when it comes to diversity. This episode is sponsored by Labyrinth Brewing in Manchester, Connecticut.Mentioned in this episode: Ale Sharpton, Craft Crew, NEBCO, and the Chicago Newseum. Background music: “Misha, Monma” by Spiral, “Cafe Music from BGM Channel.”
Diversity in craft beer is improving, but we still have a lot to do Leaders of the Brew School (LOBS) is an Atlanta-based organization celebrating people of color in craft beer. The industry has a fairly accurate stereotype of being dominated by bearded white guys, but people of all races and colors love craft beer, and LOBS wants to encourages others to drink, brew, and enjoy. We're ahead of the curve in Atlanta. There are at least half a dozen black-owned breweries opened or opening in the city. Speaking with members of LOBS they mention that they have new ideas and new flavors to bring to craft. Just like we enjoy foods from many cultures, black brewers want to express their culture through beer. Even with the boom of black breweries in Atlanta there are still many challenges ahead. Business education, funding resources, and other core needs are lacking in the community. LOBS wants to spread the word on what is needed for true acceptance and growth of black brewers in Atlanta and across the country. The group is actively seeking allies for idea generation, education, and brewing opportunities. One of the group's most well-known breweries is Atlantucky Brewing, founded by members of Nappy Roots. Fish Scales and Skinny Deville joined us this week to talk about their brewery and their vision. Through various collaborations as part of their Great American Beer Run tour (paused due to Covid-19) they've introduced many new people to craft beer. Their brick and mortar brewery will be opening in Atlanta very soon. Ale Sharpton is living the life we all want to live As Ale Sharpton joined us in the studio he'd recently returned from a trip to Montreal to take in the city with the goal of letting others know about their city. Earlier, he was given the grueling task of evaluating a new Corvette. Outside of travel and cars, he's well-versed on craft beer, gourmet food, fashion (especially sneakers), and a variety of other topics. We sat down with Ale to talk about his travels, diversity in craft beer, staying fit while still enjoying great food and beer, and his quest for the world's best crab cakes, and meeting the Rev. Al Sharpton. Ale doesn't sit still for long, there's too much to see, do, and drink. He's already off on his next adventure to Baltimore, where I'm sure he'll take on more contenders for best crab cakes.
