Have you ever seen or known anyone who had the gift of tongues? What was your reaction? Mary's Question: Mary has believed she possesses the gift of tongues for the past 30 years. She uses it during silent prayer at Mass and wonders what the Church's stance is on this gift. Patrick's Response: Patrick explains the Church's perspective, referencing Scripture and Church history. His answer might surprise you! Biblical Context: Acts 2: Apostles speaking in tongues were understood by people of different languages. 1 Corinthians 14: St. Paul provides guidelines, emphasizing that tongues should be interpreted if used in a group setting. Historical Perspective: St. Augustine: By the 4th and 5th centuries, these charismatic gifts were rare. St. Augustine said that while these gifts did exist initially to establish the Church, they became less necessary over time. Charismatic Renewal: This movement gained prominence in the late 20th century, influenced by Protestant charismatic practices. Many believed they had the gift of tongues, but Patrick says to be cautious. It's important to not jump to conclusions. Patrick's Thoughtful Caution: Patrick suggests to Mary—and anyone else who believes they have this gift—to pray for clarity. He encourages asking God to reveal whether this gift is truly from Him or perhaps a mimicry of sounds heard from others. Key Takeaway: It's essential to discern the authenticity of spiritual gifts through prayer and reflection, keeping in mind the historical and scriptural context provided by the Church.

Five years held in captivity as a prisoner of war in World War II gave George F. Kerr plenty of time to contemplate the meaning of life. He kept a journal to capture his thoughts, reflections, being notes, reminiscences, impressions, criticism, commentary and work in progress or unfinished. This commonplace scrapbook was only discovered last year by Amy 26 years George's death. Within these pages, you can witness how literature, nature and music became sources of inspiration and meaning in this time of uncertainty and adversity to create George's chronicles of captivity. KEY TAKEAWAY “It is up to you as an individual to build your purpose, to spend your life creating purposeful moments regardless of the circumstances you find yourself in.” BOOK RECOMMENDATION* Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor E Frankl - https://amzn.eu/d/cJFs9YS ABOUT GEORGE FLEMING KERR Other than being Amy's grandfather and a prisoner of war, George was an English writer best known for his work on British and Australian television, stage and radio. TRANSCRIPT FOR 1990 INTERVIEW EXCERPT Amy Rowlinson: You were a prisoner of war for five years in Germany? George Kerr: Yes. Amy Rowlinson: Yes. And how has that affected you and your attitudes towards Germans? George Kerr: I came out feeling pretty tolerant really. Because I think a prisoner of war is a fairly balanced character. Amy Rowlinson: How old were you? George Kerr: About 20. Amy Rowlinson: So you were very young. So you weren't quite sure what was going on? George Kerr: No, not at all. At 20, do you know anything? Amy Rowlinson: No, not a lot. George Kerr: You just play it by ear. Amy Rowlinson: Okay, going back to your prison days? George Kerr: Yes? Amy Rowlinson: How were you treated? Were you treated badly or what happened? George Kerr: Well, we never knew what was going to happen because the Germans were a mad lot and they tended to take hostages, they tended to do certain purges and shoot people. They tended to parade you at three in the morning and you wondered why. Then they marched you off to another place altogether, a barn, and put you in it, you didn't know if you were going to be shot there. In fact, it was retaliation for something that had been done to German prisoners in Jersey and Channel Islands, put them in chains, in cufflinks, in handcuffs, not cufflinks, and so you never knew which way they were going to bite, jump and that was for five years so you get a bit tense, really. You didn't know how long it was going to last but you had written home to your family saying I'll see you in Canada if necessary. Don't wait for me in Great Britain if we are invaded and so on. I also reassured my family I said don't worry, I shan't try to escape. That meant that I would get back alive at least but join them elsewhere if they felt that they were in danger in the country. Ruth Kerr: Most of your friends who tried to escape were shot. George Kerr: Oh, yes. Amy Rowlinson: Did you get letters back from them or did they not let…? George Kerr: Oh yes, they came back. They were all censored of course but we got letters. We were only allowed to write a letter a month, I think it was, or a letter a fortnight. But it was a fairly interesting monastic life for me at that age. It was like a university because they had a small library, eventually they got a bigger library from the Swiss Red Cross and people, and then eventually you could study anything really and I did an external London BA and I learned and passed exams in Spanish and French. Well, I knew French but I learned Spanish and did the various examination bodies had for exams. I learned to play the flute. I learned to dabble at water painting. I did a lot of writing and did a lot of reading. I did acting and it was a very rounded life. I played cricket when we had a ball. Rounded, yeah. Amy Rowlinson: It was ok, really? George Kerr: Well, no, people still committed suicide. I thought it was okay. I also knew these were the happiest days of your life but I was certainly, I was not in the majority on that. I mean they thought I was daft. And I suppose to the… Amy Rowlinson: Who thought you were daft? George Kerr: Well, I was unmarried, the other prisoners especially the married ones, I suppose. They would keep getting Dear John letters from their wives, you see. ‘I met this Polish Officer' and I hadn't got that problem. I liked it. It was like a university. But of course it was hungry, and it was cold and it was miserable. You had no friends apart from in (inaudible). But the thing you noticed was I spent five years there, I only saw one fight in my life. Amy Rowlinson: Really? George Kerr: In all that time. You learned to live. I can live with anybody at close quarters. You notice their idiosyncrasies and funny habits and so on. And you may hate them but you control it. Amy Rowlinson: So you think everyone should have five years in prison then? George Kerr: I think it wouldn't be bad that, monastic, yeah, especially if there is a library, but of course it doesn't suit people who are not academic.

As mother of two children with Tourette's syndrome and with a background in medicine and education, Mandy Barnett realised that this was something that she had a unique perspective on. When Covid hit in March 2020, her daughter had to shield and Mandy became aware of a huge spike of cases of Tourette's syndrome being reported in the press. Writing a practical guide, Mandy's aim was to provide help to parents of children with Tourette's syndrome in a post-pandemic world and to educate people that it's not all about swearing. KEY TAKEAWAY “It can be a positive part of who you are. A lot of Touretters are now saying actually, it's up to the rest of the world to adapt to us. Not the other way around. We bring amazing qualities of creativity and ability and it's time for people to recognise that side of it and not just assume that we are in some way diminished.” BOOK RECOMMENDATION* It's Not All ABout Swearing by Mandy M Barnett - https://amzn.to/3NL2RIW ABOUT MANDY BARNETT Dr Mandy M Barnett is a psychology graduate, clinical educator and consultant physician, who worked for over 30 years in the NHS, and as an Associate Clinical Professor at Warwick Medical School (WMS). Is the art of conversation dying? In a world led by digital technology, building relationships verbally is eroded daily by the ever-increasing numbers of text messages and emails. Getting people talking again is the simple mission that the Telephone Assassin aka Anthony Stears has taken on. As a speaker, trainer and consultant, Anthony is bringing traditional methods of business back to life by giving his clients the courage and confidence to pick up the phone, to stop hiding behind emails or social media and to speak their truth. KEY TAKEAWAY “It takes courage to believe that you have a message that people should hear and then to have the courage to get on stage and speak your truth. That's one of the most admirable things.” BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS* The Telephone Assassin by Anthony Stears - https://amzn.to/3hawjds ABOUT ANTHONY STEARS Working closely with clients to engage and delight their ideal customers Anthony started out making calls for a huge range of businesses. Finding himself driving sales targets for 5 different companies all at the same time, Anthony realised he needed a more effective technique in order to be able to manage a growing list of clients. After working closely with an NLP master trainer Anthony was well equipped to teach and train large teams and individuals within SME and corporates to generate lead, make conversion and impact the bottom-line for themselves. This was the start of a successful career that eventually led to the creation of his now hugely popular Telemarketing Masterclass. Not realising just how many people are daunted by picking up the phone to a potential customer, calling someone to deliver bad news, or addressing an awkward situation/customer, Anthony is often approached to tailor specific classes and he also developed a range of mini master-classes that would help people to avoid rejection, get past the gatekeeper, perfect their pitch and build rapport fast Working with sales departments, account managers and customer service team Anthony can provide a clear structure to follow, ways to stay motivated when making calls, the importance of prospect management, techniques for closing more appointments, and “the art” of a perfect follow up call. Anthony can essentially enable anyone in any business to take control of your conversations and to make each call count. A true specialist at his craft, Anthony is being invited to a range of conferences worldwide to give away his secrets and promote the art of using the phone for real connection and commerce. As creative professionals, we constantly have to reinvent ourselves to stay relevant (and frankly just to survive the insanity of our industry). The pressure to come up with new ideas and be daring is stressful at best, and debilitating at worst. Many of us are under the illusion that this pressure we place on ourselves gives us our edge - that it helps us continue to perform our best. But instead this pressure leads to limiting beliefs, imposter syndrome, and procrastination. And if it persists over long periods of time…even total burnout. What if there was a better approach to reinventing yourself, your work, and even your health & body image so you could fully tap into your limitless creativity? How different would it feel to be able to say 'yes' to the things that scared you and 'no' to the things that were comfortable and easy, rather than feeling stuck in a job you no longer enjoy? Or sliding into bad habits that are sapping your energy (like that sleeve of oreos that tasted soooooo good) and killing your motivation (just one more episode, then I'll be productive!!!!), you could actually rise to the challenge with a 'can-do' attitude and a believe that your dreams are possible? My guest today, Scott Morgan, is a PGA Golf Professional turned Online Fitness Trainer, husband, father of 2, a plant based athlete and creator of The Sweatville Club. He also happens to be 58 years old. And only in the last few years has he made this transition to online fitness trainer, plant based athlete, and entrepreneur during the period of life when most people would have considered it “too late” to learn something new and follow a passion that seemed risky or even foolish. Scott's story will inspire you to take a risk, jump out of your comfort zone and discover what it's like to live life with a "can-do" attitude. As a Business Leader, you perform many roles. However, your greatest role, the one in which you are always centre stage and in the spotlight, is in ‘performing as you’. So many talented, accomplished, committed leaders report that their deepest desire is to ‘be more themselves’ in their leadership performance and connect to a deeper sense of self and authenticity. This is when you are most alive, aligned and inspirational. With a lifetime of experience from the world of theatre, Diana Theodores knows that witnessing and delivering ‘great performances’ inspires us to feel more possibility for ourselves: to feel more alive, more optimistic, more passionate, more motivated and more courageous. Diana invites you into your own personal rehearsal room to connect with your inspirational energy, claim your true voice and step into your boldest presence. KEY TAKEAWAY "It's really about what is the story that we're telling ourselves? What's the story I'm telling myself? And if I actually stop and consciously and intentionally reflect on that story, I'll often find the story is out of date and the story is no longer serving us. What's the new story that's a much more accurate and potent one that could replace that story? That could help ourselves as individuals, could help our teams, could help our organisation?” BOOK RECOMMENDATION* Performing as YOU by Diana Theodores - https://amzn.to/3p8fjHx ABOUT DIANA THEODORES Diana Theodores is the Presence & Performance Specialist every business leader needs, Speaker, and Director of Theatre 4 Business Ltd. Having worked in the NHS for over 20 years, Lisa Brown decided to pursue her passion in property. A chance encounter led Lisa to develop a property for a young man with complex needs and this led her to discover the Supported Living space. Lisa loved combining her ‘nursing brain' and her 'property brain’ to create a home for life for this individual, however she encountered many challenges in developing this property. Lisa wanted to understand why so few property investors let their properties to Supported Living providers and set about providing a solution to connect property investors and developers through the Supported Living Gateway. KEY TAKEAWAY “It's about people having the right life, isn't it? It's about people having the right opportunities regardless of their disability or where they've come from. It's making sure people have support either to transition to taking their own tenancies or to be able to stay somewhere and feel safe and secure.” ABOUT LISA BROWN Lisa worked in the NHS as a nurse in acute and community settings for over 20 years. In 2018, she decided to follow her passion for property and established Pebble Properties. Whilst developing a property, Lisa realised there was a real problem for supported living providers who were struggling to find property for supported living schemes leaving many vulnerable people housed in unsuitable and unsafe property and unable to be discharged from hospital. This led her to collaborate with others and set up the Supported Living Gateway, a revolutionary way for supported living providers to find property for supported living schemes all over mainland UK. Lisa lives in Devon with her husband, two teenage sons, dogs, chickens and other assorted pets. Lisa has been a trustee of the Childhood Eye Cancer Trust for the past seven years. She loves spending time with her family and dogs messing about on the river, sea or the moor. Be nice. Could it possibly be that simple? Given everything happening in the world, all the hatred, all the cynicism, all the distrust around the globe in every corner of society...is it possible that the fastest path to success in any field is simply to “be nice?” In Hollywood it seems like this is as far from the truth as humanly possible. We all know that “nice guys finish last.” It’s those with the guts to take what’s theirs and step all over people along the way that ultimately climb to the top. If you’re going to succeed in a world of “crabs in a bucket,” you’re on your own...right? No matter how hard that poor crab wants to escape to a better life, the other crabs still stuck in the bucket refuse to let him free. In my interview with multiple Emmy-winning editor Jesse Averna, ACE (recorded shortly before the murder of George Floyd and the ensuing riots), Jesse and I talk about the importance of treating every human being equally and providing value to others first as a way to climb to the top...while bringing others along with you. Jesse and I believe that “a rising tide can lift all boats” and Hollywood does not have to be a zero-sum game whereby helping others means you’ve created more competition for yourself. Our sixth core concept is a perfect build-on to the “Plus One, Minus One” activity mentioned in our previous episode, Concept #5: “Not an Excuse.” Plus one, in particular, is about mining your team of the things they want to have more of. Then, as you dig deeper into this challenge, it’s amazing what you’ll discover from each of the team member’s responses. The Story Behind ‘Gimme That Escalation’ In one of the recent training sessions, a guy came forward and expressed what he has written on his wish list. “I would love to have more escalation calls.” This statement set off these confused looks and reactions among others in the room. “Did he just say that right? ‘I want more escalation calls?” “What is he talking about?” These people were shocked that the guy was wanting more escalation calls. So of course, they had to ask him for further explanation. According to the guy, he’s the “deepest subject-matter expert in the whole organization on this matter. He’s quite confident that he can very well handle when a customer turns utterly irate. “I know that they can be so frustrated and can give up any time, but I know I'm gonna resolve it. If anyone can, it's me.” His awareness and certainty that he has the resolution and knowledge to turn things around fires up his love for doing escalations. And for that, we have named this concept in his honor. Open Up To Meaningful Conversations The guy’s gimme that escalation statement opened up a whole conversation with others in the room. If you guessed that his teammates instantly offered him their own escalation calls, that’s not far-fetched at all. But expecting him to accept all escalations may not be realistic since of course, he actually has to get some other stuff done. While the guy got more escalations after such conversation, he also freed up his plate with tasks that were on his “minus one” list. Obviously, he was able to achieve the “plus one, minus one” balance, thanks to some good thinking and meaningful conversation. Opening up about what you want more of — though oftentimes surprising many in the room — can create a shift in the tasks. This proves that indeed one person’s trash is another person’s treasure. Expanding The Concept How can we expand this concept further so it’s easier to apply? Consider the following as fun exercises for you as an individual or as a manager. 1. As an individual: Discover other people’s “trash” tasks Gather information. Consider walking around the office and listen for what people are kvetching, complaining or procrastinating about. This is not to suggest that you join in the watercooler talk or random office conversations. Your goal is to capture as much information as you can for this little internal research project. Look out for “magic” moments. Most likely as you listen, you’ll find some “aha” moments. You discover that certain things people complain about are not bad at all. They could be stuff you actually like doing. You’ll find that what others consider as an area of weakness or difficulty might be an area of expertise for you. As you look out for these moments, compare and take notes. 2. As a manager: Discover your team’s “loathe” list and shift tasks when possible Imagine if you knew what each of your team members’ trash tasks were, especially their top list. Just knowing this could be really important because you are able to spot whether the “loathe” list includes tasks they have to do every day. You get an insight into the team’s demotivation points. In reality, it might not be that outright and easy to shift things around, as tasks that people hate still need to get accomplished. But in a lot of workplaces, the assignments are not homogenous, so you might have some power to be able to switch things around. Perhaps you could take something off the plate of a top performer in your team who may be losing interest in their job as they have to do what they loathe on a daily basis. Time And Trust Are Key Opening up a conversation with your team members about the tasks they hate require a lot of trust. That's why you can't do strengths just as a one-time offsite team building and expect it to create all the magic things in the world. It takes meaningful conversation over time, up to that point they are comfortable enough to say, “Sure, I'm gonna give it my number one best, but I actually hate this job duty.” The ‘Gimme That ________’ Exercise On the flip side, this exercise can prove powerful for the whole team, as it opens some cool opportunities. When assigning projects to your team members, consider these: Their strengths. For each team member, find and assign to them that thing that lives in their strengths zone, especially if it's not in the strengths zone of everyone else. What is it that they love and makes them come alive? Their expertise. Think about the projects that tend to get assigned at work. Those who are good at certain skills or knowledge areas related to those projects can be the go-to persons. Their development plan. If you’re the type of manager who puts considerable thought on what a person wishes to develop, as expressed in their individual development plan, be on the lookout for a relevant opportunity or project for them. Sometimes, however, it can be pretty difficult when you’re finding an opportunity for them based on expertise and career goals. Let’s say a team member wants a very specific project, and you happen to have just one project like that and it’s already assigned to another person. This leaves you with very little choice as a leader. As a team leader, what do you do? Gimme That Challenge Here’s your challenge: get cool with limiting or difficult situations like that and then approach the conversation in terms of talent themes. As we know, talent themes are about how they get things done. You can just imagine what strengths and talent themes can come up. So, here’s what you can do. Ask each person to think about their talent themes. Let them come to you with 3 examples of projects that call on how they think/feel/operate in the world. Check out these “gimme that ________” scenarios: 1) Gimme that situation. (Includer talent): “Okay, next time you're assigning projects and it’s important for you to find someone who will thoroughly listen to all of the requirements of each stakeholder, really cares what each person has to say, and want every voice of every department to be represented -- call on me.” 2) Gimme that dilemma. (Deliberative talent): “Hey, next time you're assigning a project and you need someone to look at the downstream risks of a decision, or someone who can think seven or eight steps ahead about all the things that could go wrong so that we don't step in the potholes -- I'd love it if you consider me.” 3) Gimme that complex problem. (Restorative talent): “Next time you're assigning projects and you have one that just seems like a big, hairy problem, I hope you'd think of me. I love to roll up my sleeves and just really get into all of the ways to solve a complicated problem.” With this approach, what they provide could allow you more space and flexibility in assigning projects. You’ll find that there are actually a lot more opportunities for each individual than if their “gimme that _____” was too specific and narrow. This becomes awesome to you as a manager, especially that some people in your team don’t want to deal with such kinds of problems. Key Takeaway It’s important that you get your team to communicate their wish list of work and projects that align with their strengths. This will help you look for opportunities and assignments where they can apply those easy buttons every day on the job and give their best. Ready For The Next Concept? Up next: “T” for "takes time and intention." Stay tuned!
Today it’s just Marcus and Rich on the podcast. They’re free styling the conversation and chatting about how they were both on vacation while the news was breaking that COVID-19 was spreading quickly and that the government declared it a pandemic. They also discuss the role that therapy has played in their decisions to stay calm during the current stock market crash and what could be the start of a recession. They reiterate the importance of making sound financial decisions and not jumping into buying stock or selling stock out of emotion. Remember, investing is something that should be part of your regular financial plan and a habit that you practice 365. They’re both highlighting some changes in their mindsets and uncovering some things they’ve learned about using their time more effectively and being more deliberate with their goals. In this episode they discuss why your time is more valuable then you think, the importance of taking new opportunities, learning new skills at your job, and taking charge of your investments. Perhaps the most important thing they’ve learned in 2019 is that you have to enjoy the process of self-improvement and that your mental health is at the root of all your successes. If you don’t get your mental health right, it’s hard for the other things to fall into place. Highlights: Marcus getting a new job and moving to a new city Starting a new job and having to learn new processes and procedures Dealing with imposter syndrome “Don’t be afraid to go after a new opportunity for 6- 8 months, it doesn’t have to be permanent” “Where you’re at today is the culmination of the past 10-15 years” Declaring side hustle income goals SEP IRA’s for business owners Making moves on your own, within your investment accounts Determining the hourly rate for your life Hiring help for the tasks that take up too much of your time Continuing Therapy and taking advantage of your companies “Employee Assistance Program” Key Takeaway: It’s important to reflect back on your year and take note of your wins and loses. You can’t change what you don’t track, so write down those goals and improvement areas of your life, and crush them in 2020. We’re all trying to get our finances under control, but have you ever thought about your parents financial situation? In this episode, we sit down with Cameron Huddleston and discuss how we can help our parents with financial issues such as retirement, long term care insurance, debt, wills, and much more. Huddleston is the author of “Mom and Dad, We Need to Talk: How to Have Essential Conversations with Your Parents About Their Finances,” which is set to be released on June 25th, and outlines how you can have productive conversations with your parents regarding money. Throughout her book, Huddleston breaks down the step-by-step process of how you can approach the taboo topic of your parents financial situation. While these conversations may be awkward, there are huge consequences to not having these conversations at all. While it may take some time to get through to your parents, it’s essential to have a financial plan in place before an emergency occurs. If your parents are reluctant to speak about their finances, you can start by treading lightly regarding the topic, offering to help in small ways, and asking a trusted third party to get involved. Highlights: Cameron’s past in journalism and her extensive experience when it comes to covering topics relating to personal finance. Some universal advice when it comes to money management, is that you need to be saving more money for retirement. How to cut your spending to save more for retirement. While money is a taboo topic, Huddleston’s book “Mom and Dad We Need to Talk” breaks down these conversations and how you can speak with your parents about their finances, retirement plans, long term care insurance, wills, and more. While talking about money with your parents can feel awkward, it’ll be much worse if you don’t have these conversations. Even happy families can end up fighting and bickering over belongings if a loved one passes away without a will. Speak about issues relating to long term care, legal documents, the power of acting attorney, finances, debt, retirement, etc. 58% of Americans have less than $1,000 in savings, and less than 10% have long term care insurance. Timing is a big component to consider when you approach your parents about money issues. Instead of talking with them around the holidays, save this conversation for the summer time. It also might be a good decision to approach this topic slowly, and schedule specific days. Huddleston breaks down different techniques and methods that can be used when trying to get through to reluctant parents. Key Takeaway: It can be difficult and awkward to speak to your parents about their finances, but there are huge consequences to not having these conversations at all. If your parents refuse to speak about these issues, you can start by approaching them respectfully, offering to help in small ways, and asking a trusted third party to get involved. As a fierce advocate for accessible information about VBACs, Jen has built a platform that “neutralizes the misinformation and confusion about VBAC so respectful, evidence-based care is the foundation from which families grow.” In today’s episode, Taylor and Jen talk about Jen’s 2 births and the path they started her on towards the work she does now. Jen Kamel is a nationally recognized Consumer Advocate who founded VBAC Facts in November 2007 after learning how many women were coerced into repeat cesareans violating medical ethics and their human rights. Her mission is to increase access to VBAC so that every pregnant person knows in their bones that they have complete control over what happens to their body. She created the VBAC Facts Professional Membership where she supports perinatal professionals around the world who want to confidently guide their clients through the evidence so they can make truly informed decisions. She also offers online educational courses for parents. She is a national speaker and legislative consultant focusing on midwifery legislation and regulations. She has testified multiple times in front of the California Medical Board and legislative committees on the importance of VBAC access and serves as an expert witness in legal proceedings. Have you ever wondered why it seems easier for men to realize their dreams than it does for women? In our society, women are expected to take care of their children, their home, and the people around them while men are supposed to be the providers for the family. And while some cultural societies may be more accepting of women focusing on their career dreams and goals, these expectations still seem to creep up for many ambitious women - often manifesting as excuses for not reaching their goals or achieving their dreams. As a little girl, my parents taught me to believe in myself and that anything was possible. As I got older, I had the shocking realization that not everyone shares this belief. In this episode, I tell the story of how I discovered that many ambitious women in business struggle to believe in themselves and how they make excuses that result in not achieving their dreams. I also discuss the impact that society's expectations have on the mindset of many women in business, my perspective on how not following your dreams can impact and influence the people around you, and the importance of getting rid of your excuses once and for all and begin following your passion and achieving your dreams. “Excuses are just a way for you to kill your dream.” - Sigrun In This Episode of The Sigrun Show: How society plays a role in women's mindset The importance of making your dreams a priority How achieving your dreams impacts the people around you Why your most important job is figuring out your passion and making it a reality Examining the challenges you need to overcome to become successful Debunking the myth that being a successful entrepreneur is about time, money, and skills Key Takeaway: It's never about time, money, or skills. It's not about whether you live alone, have children, or are married. It's all about priorities. Terri talks to Holly Ruxin about her journey into discovering her heart and getting out of her head to lead a more authentic life and help her clients at Montcalm TCR invest in alignment with their personal values. Who is Holly Ruxin? Holly founded Montcalm TCR, a female-led wealth management firm in San Francisco combining over twenty years’ experience in risk management on Wall Street with a transparent process that empowers clients. Holly has an extensive background in finances having begun her investment career at Goldman Sachs in the fixed income derivatives division, where she learned indelible lessons about risk management and cultivated an expert understanding of money. She later managed assets and led private client teams at Morgan Stanley, Montgomery Securities, and Bank of America. Show Highlights If Holly had a magic wand she would change the existing power infrastructure where everyone leads from their heads and have everyone lead from their hearts. Holly talks about following your heart and your gut to be more grounded in your decisions. Terri talks about having spent the last two years stripping out the adaptations and the accommodations to succeed in a man’s world Holly shared her experience being on Wall Street where she was taught to be very good at leading from the head but later realized there was another way. She spent several years working with coaches to unravel ‘her head.’ She talked about the difference in the ‘masculine’ versus the ‘feminine’ values and how hard it is to undo the values one is trained to follow. Terri talks about the current situation in the world presenting us with the perfect opportunity to shift in the way we operate in the world and embracing values that are no longer serving us in the world. Terri talks about working with a coach over the summer to learn to embrace her intuition as the decisions she made intuitively have been some of her best decisions. Holly talks about how women differ from men in having not only just fear/flight but having fear/flight and building of community. Holly has spent the last few years learning to build new ‘super highways’ in her brain to operate in the world differently. The contrasts in the world are providing people with the opportunities to speak up and say they want to come from a more authentic place. She had her third child in 2008 when the financial markets were crashing and she had two other children at the time. Her oldest child started losing his motor skills and language and she couldn’t get a diagnosis even after having gone to a number of prominent medical facilities in the SF Bay Area. She resorted to looking to non-western medicine to get answers. This led her to start thinking about being more authentic in the world. She saw that it was possible to bring this new way of thinking and this new value system into the financial world. She thinks that love is about truth and authenticity. It is important to be grateful and not have judgment. The nature of the C corporation is that legally it has fiduciary responsibility to the shareholders; they must make profits higher. The B corporation must support people, environment and profits. With the change to B corps, there will be different motivations. Terri talks about the need to redefine the definition of success. Holly started her wealth management company Montcalm TCR to give…not just extract which is what was expected of her at Morgan Stanley and Bank of America. Holly provides her clients with the opportunity to ask questions to engage and understand and feel empowered with her money and their investments. Terri asked Holly about Stash Wealth for millennials to get better service as they are building their wealth and want to invest in things that aligned with their values. Holly talks about how we have lost our community banking where there was connection in the community and one was able to borrow because they were known in the community. Holly talks about how some of her very wealthy clients being very nervous about losing all of their money. People who are scared come from a scarcity perspective and she works with them to reduce that fear to create greater abundance. Holly says that people are afraid because they really aren’t invested in their investments Holly talks about the Last Mile and how it helps inmates in the criminal justice learn to code. She talks about NPX Investors and how it is providing a different and new way to have money flow and build sustainability for people. Terri puts Holly on the spot in asking her about CNote. CNote is tied into community developed financial institutions. They give the investor a chance to be involved in the cash flows. Holly continues to ask about how you can continue to focus on transformational behavior. Jacqueline asks Terri to ask Holly about how to become a more heart-centered investor…Holly responds by encouraging you to ask questions. The questions are: What do I own? What do I owe? What do I earn? What do I need? These bring it out of your head and into your heart. Terri talks about her semi-annual financial review to get her concerns out of her head and focus on the reality. It reduces a lot of stress for her. Terri’s Key Takeaway It is possible to collaborate and have all stakeholders win. Life is not a zero-sum game.
