Award-winning journalist James Ball joins the podcast to discuss how this week's scandal has been different from the ones Boris Johnson has usually ridden out and how Keir Starmer has stepped up to the plate in light of it. They then go on to discuss the most influential address you've never heard of - 55 Tufton Street, SW1. It's the home of pro-Brexit groups and climate change sceptics, but just how much power does it have over the government? A rolling stone that keeps on going and going. On this episode I interview Kriss Akabusi; - not the GB track legend of the 400 metre hurdles & 4x4 relay team - not as the tv personality that you may have seen in but as the person he has become; thinker, philosopher, coach and a man oozing with passion to enable and encourage others to shake off the shackles and have some true and meaningful conversations in life. In this episode we explore some of the deeper questions in life with Kriss. Kriss has reflected on his life a lot more since the 2012 London Olympics and has discovered a love of philosophy. We talk about the value of new conversations and agree that you're only as good as the new conversations that you're having. We talk about whole new area of being and becoming. All of a sudden, the gift of life has become even more rare and wonderful, with the realisation of how quick it's over. With his usual mix of energy and passion Kriss shares insight into how he really wants to explore; what is this life, what is this experience. Asking; is any of it eternal or is it temporal? Kriss's philosophy or view of the world is; none of us asked to be born and none of us want to die. Inside of that there will be many different versions of you. You get to choose at any one time who you're going to be. What is it or are you hiding from what it is. We have order on one side and the chaos on the other. "All creativity comes out of chaos" As a coach, philosopher (and a rolling stone) Kriss shares his views on leading from behind and helping others discover and experiment for themselves. He shares some of the great teachers in his life including Sergeant McKenzie who met him at a key point in his life and his own children who play a big part in his life everyday. Here's some words of wisdom from Kriss; Here today and gone tomorrow... Interview with Lindsay Woodford Applied Sports Psychologist and Senior Lecturer at University West of England in Bristol talking about a winning mindset and what she likes to refer to as an 'effective mindset'. An ex-rower and now dressage competitor, Lindsay helps athletes mentally to prepare and perform. She has worked with Bath Rugby, England Rugby, GB Triathlon and GB BMX in the past and is currently working with a gymnast, ballroom dancers and athletes transitioning out of sport. Lindsay shares that an effective (winning) mindset is one that facilitates growth. She sees loving what you're doing as a key to life; helping both mental and physical health. Some of her work with the athletes focuses in on resilience and how others can develop this. Learning through failure and not fearing it; seeing failure as an opportunity to learn. In her line of work, failure is still an issue and a frustration. As part of developing an effective mindset, Lindsay seeks to understand; What's driving it? What the fear is? Then she looks to break it down into manageable results; or rungs on the ladder! In the final part of the interview Lindsay talks about setting goals that aren't just outcome related. She emphasises the importance of them being task focused; making sure you do a, b and c...and controlling the controllable's. Lindsay concludes by sharing that she's currently conducting research (as part of Phd) into over training. This is an episode of two parts! My guest - the brilliant Shakira Akabusi - and I recorded our chat back in December 2019. The episode didn't go out back then because I'd just finished a podcast series and had a big writing project to knuckle down to, so it stayed tucked away on my laptop for over five months. In that time though, mum of two and ante-natal/post-natal fitness expert, Shakira, announced that she's pregnant again.... with twins! So a few days ago, we caught up for another chat. In the first part of the episode, Shakira talks to me about the problems we - in our society - have when it comes to talking about exercise and health, we delve into why so many new mums are desperate to get their pre-baby body back and Shakira tells me why she doesn't have a problem with people having a physical health goal like getting back into a certain size of jeans. We also chat about how growing up being the daughter of Olympic athlete Kriss Akabusi influenced and affected her.In the second part of our chat, Shakira tells me what her twin pregnancy has been like so far, how it's affected her health and how she feels about very possibly giving birth during lockdown. We cover a lot of ground and even if you're not pregnant or a new mum, there's so much in our chat that I hope you'll find useful.Check out Shakira's website Strong Like Mum and follow her on Instagram. Not Another Mummy Podcast is brought to you by me, journalist and blogger Alison Perry. When he was just four years old, Kezie’s parents left him to return back to Nigeria. He grew up with a series of foster parents and in a children’s home, before deciding to join the army and changing his name to Kriss. Despite what was a difficult start to life, Kriss is grateful for everything that has happened and is a great believer in accepting the cards that you’re dealt and making the best of them. A rolling stone that keeps on going and going. On this episode I interview Kriss Akabusi; not the GB track legend of the 400 metre hurdles & 4x4 relay team not as the tv personality that you may have seen in… but as the person he has become; thinker, philosopher, coach and a man oozing with passion to enable and encourage others to shake off the shackles and have some true and meaningful conversations in life. All creativity comes out of chaos As a coach, philosopher (and a rolling stone) Kriss shares his views on leading from behind and helping others discover and experiment for themselves. He shares some of the great teachers in his life including Sergeant McKenzie who met him at a key point in his life and his own children who play a big part in his life everyday. Here's some words of wisdom from Kriss; Here today and gone tomorrow... What is the right reason to quit your job and start your own business? On this week's episode of Escape The Rat Race Radio I am very pleased to welcome Olympian, motivational speaker and entrepreneur, Kriss Akabusi. I recently had the pleasure of meeting Kriss at the London Premiere of the new film adaptation of Napoleon Hill’s Classic Personal Development Book ‘Think & Grow Rich’, and after hearing his inspiring talk to the audience I just knew I had to invite him onto the show! Having amassed three Olympic medals, as well as World, European and Commonwealth titles, Kriss was bestowed with an even greater honour in 1992: an MBE awarded by her Majesty the Queen in recognition of his services to the country through athletics. Kriss’ first foray into television and entertainment came when he presented Channel 4’s hit breakfast show, The Big Breakfast.  This was followed with a full time position as co-presenter of the BBC’s legendary Record Breakers, as well as presenting various other children’s TV programmes. Kriss’ engaging personality, inspirational speaking style, and remarkable backstory soon led to a growing demand for his services as a professional speaker.  For over 20 years, he has given countless keynote speeches and facilitated a wide range of training workshops in the corporate arena, under the umbrella of The Akabusi Company. Kriss is also an accredited personal coach, having qualified at the Hudson Institute of Santa Barbara.  He works with executives and senior managers to help them identify, clarify and achieve their personal and business goals. If you check out the video footage from this interview on the Escape The Rat Race website you’ll see some of the behind the scenes laughs that Kriss and I had recording this episode, but more importantly you’ll see the sheer passion that Kriss exudes when he speaks about the potential that we as humans all are blessed with, and I think you’re especially going to be inspired by Kriss’ story of how his upbringing really shaped the success he has gone onto achieve over his career, not just in athletics, but in business too. So it’s time for me to hand over the baton, pick up the pace, and let’s head on over to my interview with Olympian, MBE holder and motivational speaker, Mr Kriss Akabusi. In this episode you’ll learn… Why we should appreciate the opportunity we have ‘right here, right now’ to interact with over 7.5 billion other people on earth Why it is so important to surround yourself with people who will support your dreams rather than hold you back How joining the army led to Kriss finding his first mentor, which eventually led him to winning an Olympic Medal for the British Athletics Team Why it is only important to know what your dream is, what your goal is and what your passion is...today. Don’t get too caught up in trying to predict the future as it can sometimes cause overwhelm How Kriss came to the decision to end his athletics career and launch his own company to train and support business owners and entrepreneurs How one of the things that holds so many people back is receiving feedback Why Kriss loves Millennials, however he does feel they have been served a bad hand The big questions of life which Kriss is now asking through his newfound passion of existential psychotherapy   Quotes: ‘I decided at twelve years of age that my mother wasn’t coming back for me, and that I had to be enough’ ‘If you’ve got a powerful dream, a real desire, and you really believe in yourself….and talk about it, you will be amazed at the people that come into your life’ ‘Trust yourself, go for it, believe in it, hold onto it, and you will find your way’ ‘If you tap into your passion, other people will come along and help you to build your dream’   Links & Resources mentioned in this episode: The Akabusi Company   Guest Details: Kriss Akabusi MBE Twitter Kriss Akabusi Instagram Kriss Akabusi Facebook Kriss Akabusi MBE Connect with Escape The Rat Race...within 12 months: Official Website Private Facebook Group   Thanks for listening! What this episode has in store for you ‘When the pupil is ready, the teacher appears. I am sure in my life I have met a lot of good people who wanted to help me but I was not ready, focused or engaged enough. When I joined the army, I had a new mindset – I wanted to belong, I wanted to stay. That's where I met my first mentor.‘ ‘I wanted to appeal to people, make them feel good about themselves and make them laugh and that was about inspiring people. The move into the army physical training core showed me that my physical prowess was a skill that I could readily utilise and that I had an ability to inspire other people to step up to the challenge, and get them motivated also. Of course, I worked with a lot of guys in top physical condition, but a lot of soldiers are also struggling and I had an ability to make them feel good, get them engaged in sports, which also developed other parts of my motivational expertise.' ‘There are some people in life that you gravitate towards and you don't know why. I found out in life that the more you give in life the more you receive - if you give smiles you get smiles back. Life is wonderful, and I meet great people each and every day – what I give out, I get back tenfold.' ‘Often failures in life are the universe asking you how much you really want it. You've got to work hard all day and every day.' ‘Commitment precedes confirmation – Of course, you have to have a phenomenal dream and a phenomenal belief in that dream, but the dream without action remains a daydream. You've got to take action - masses of committed action. It's in that commitment to your dream that you find confirmation. If you engage with your dream, other people will too and, with that, phenomenal things happen. “A dream without action remains a daydream. You've got to take action - masses of committed action. It's in that commitment to your dream that you find confirmation." Kriss rose to fame on the athletics track, where his greatest individual triumph was winning the gold medal in the 1990 European Championships.  This was the day when he beat David Hemery's British record for the 400 metre hurdles – a record that stood for 22 years before Kriss made his mark on it! Kriss began his international athletics career in 1983 as a member of the 4x400 metre relay squad.  He will probably always be remembered for helping Britain clinch the gold from the mighty Americans at the 1991 World Championships in Tokyo. Having amassed three Olympic medals, as well as World, European and Commonwealth titles, Kriss was bestowed with an even greater honour in 1992: an MBE awarded by her Majesty the Queen in recognition of his services to the country through athletics. Kriss speaks to me about his journey to what he is today -  from his upbringing and early education, his experience in the army, and how he started upon the path to his athletic career today.

Well I think out guest today does not need an introduction he is SUCH a legend already BUT let me jus build that suspense for you guys a little bit! We are joined today by THE ONE THE ONLY Kriss Akabusi MBE! Why did we chase down Kriss and ask him to come and speak to you guys….because Barry and I were driving up to Slough on a Monday and we heard Kriss speaking on radio 2 about his story. It was incredible and it was a story full of inspiration, motivation and just complete amazement. I think i cried and laughed all in about 1/2 hr! Kriss began his international athletics career in 1983, and since then has broken so many records and won a lot of medals…..just a few of his most memorable accolades are…. Gold Medal in 400m hurdles 1990 European Championships beating David Hemery’s 22 year old British record with a split time of 47.92 seconds when he fell to his knees in delight. In 1991 in the world championships in Tokyo he broke his own record not only once but twice 47.91 in semi-final, 47.86 in the final (and won a bronze medal) on the flat 4 x 400m relay race. This was a huge iconic moment in British Athletics and its 25th anniversary was just celebrated with a star studded gala, attended even by Lord Sebastian Coe Plus in 1991 he was awarded an MBE. Then in 1992 he broke his own record again in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics with a time of 47.82 in the 400m hurdles and won a silver at these games. This record still stands today. But life has not always been so successful for Kriss as he had a tough upbringing. Our favourite quote of Kriss’s is “the past is for reference and not residence” Which is so beautiful and is going to make a lot of sense once you have heard his story. Kriss it’s a huge honour thank you so much for joining us today!

Today, I am so lucky to have been joined by none other than Kriss Akabusi. For those of you who don't know, Kriss competed for Great Britain in track and field for 8 years. In that time, he won an abundance of medals. Following that, he had a big media career and he now does some fantastic motivational and mind-set based speaking. Aside from that, he's a thoroughly nice bloke and was extremely generous with his time! ======================================================= Find my free 21 day course here: www.alphamovement.co and follow us on Facebook here: www.facebook.com/AlphaMovementOfficial Join my secret group of mega dedicated guys wanting the same change as you here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/152231778482776/188380274867926/?notif_t=like  ----- Music by Oak is found here: https://www.facebook.com/oakmusicworld

Kriss is better known for his athletics success than his property investing, winning a plethora of medals at Olympics, Commonwealth Games, European and World Championships, including a British record in the 400m hurdles which still stands today.   He was appointed MBE in 1992 for his services through Athletics, and went on to have a successful career as a TV personality, philanthropist through the Akabusi Charitable Trust, and as a highly sought after motivational and keynote speaker.    Then, at the start of 2015, after giving a motivational talk at the Platinum Property Partners National Workshop the previous year, Kriss decided to join the successful HMO franchise business and build his own property portfolio.     Don't forget to subscribe on iTunes so you don't miss another episode, and download our free guide to Financial Freedom Goal Setting at www.insidepropertyinvesting.com/goals.   Full show notes available at http://www.insidepropertyinvesting.com/krissakabusi/

[spp-player optin="off" ctabuttons="off" url=“youraudio.mp3"] I'm thrilled to be able to share with you another fabulous positive birth story. Today I'm chatting to Shakira Akabusi all about her pregnancy journey and her birth. Shakira is a personal trainer, fitness coach and a writer and commentator. If you're a Brit, you might recognise her surname; her dad is the former UK athlete and gold medalist Kriss Akabusi, so you could say that she has health and fitness running in her DNA. Shakira gave birth to her son Rio on new year's eve last year so her birth is still fresh in her mind. We've been trying to get this chat done since March but both our diaries have been a bit crazy and our little ones have a habit of disrupting plans! But we made it in the end. When Shakira first found out she was pregnant, she was completely over the moon, but also totally terrified. During our chat, she shares the fears that she had during her pregnancy and how she dealt with them and overcame them to have the positive birth experience that she wanted. Shakira chose to have an epidural for her birth from the outset and during our chat she explains why, despite having a fear of injections. She talks alot about what it was like giving birth having had an epidural so if this is something that you're considering, it's well worth a listen. Now one things that's really interesting to listen to is Shakira's persepctive on fitness and exercise during pregnancy as well as post-natally. As a personal trainer she was really keen to maintain her fitness levels and had to find ways to adjust as her pregnancy progressed. During our chat she also shares with us how she prepared for birth as well as kind of things she did post-birth. As a result of her experiences as a mum trying to stay fit and regain her body post-birth, she's started to develop a fitness concept to help mums continue to exercise WITH baby.. by using baby as part of the exercises. She even posts videos of some of her work-outs with baby Rio on her Twitter feed and on her YouTube channel. This has kicked off a whole new venture for her which she'll be launching next year at Strong Like Mum so stay tuned if you're interested in learning how you can stay fit with your baby. Here's a little peak at one of her videos. Shakira is a regular contributor to Huffington Post and her latest article is about breastfeeding: Bullied Into Breastfeeding: Rise of the Midwife Mafia? so we spent a bit of time talking about the challenges she had with breastfeeding. She is still breastfeeding little Rio, but it wasn't always a smooth ride for her and she has some great advice for new mums to help them cope. You can follow Shakira on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to stay tuned with all the great post-baby fitness stuff that she's sharing. What has been your fitness experience during your pregnancy? And what about post-birth? Tell me in the comments or come and find me on Facebook!
