Peter Johnston is a long-time rock climber and currently resides in Portland, Oregon. After seeing years of truly poor decision making at his local crags, Peter gathered his observations and thoughts about these experiences and began writing it all down. About one year ago, the final result was "...But I Won't Fall There," released by Sharp End Publishing from Boulder, CO. Peter believes the content of this book has a lot of potential overlap with topics on the Sharp End Podcast and he is excited for you to read it. Over the past few years, Megan and Michael had their eyes set on Temple Crag Peak; a 13,000 foot peak about six miles into the backcountry of the Eastern Sierras in California. The two of them attempted it in late July of 2021, and ended up being stuck on the side of the mountain during a thunderstorm for several hours during the retreat. That's one story… but then they went back this past summer to try again. After a 23 hour day, they made the summit and learned a lot along the way. Tune in to this episode to hear the full story. There is so much more to Mike Atkinson (aka Outback Mike) than what we saw of his 64 days, toughing it out in the wilds of Tassie's west coast, on the first season of SBS' Alone Australia (season 2 kicks off 27/3/23).He's been having epic expedition style adventures since his first long hike at 11 years old with his family and building towards his first solo trip, skiing from Mt Kosciusko to Canberra, aged 17.Watching him on ALONE, I was drawn in by his problem solving and seemingly endless tinkering to build a better existence out in takayna/The Tarkine. As you'll hear in this episode (and can read much more about in his book Modern Day Castaway), his ALONE canoe wasn't his first. In this ep we get to know a bit more about what drives this type of life and what it takes in the form of meticulous planning and testing, before committing to something that might cost him everything... and how he once made the decision to call for help.BTS: If you listen carefully, you might hear aircraft in the background. Yep… if you're going to be an Air Force pilot, you live near an airbase!Download the transcript here.Episode takeaways: Why life is better with adventure How Mike approaches problem-solving and mitigating risk The value of calling for help early What a pilot sees from the air (tips for being visible) Decision-making in a crisis - how not to be ‘flappy' The importance of satellite communication and the value of 2-way devices eg. ZOLEO, InReach, etc Choosing who will be your emergency contact When emotions can surprise you and how they could affect decision making Preparation and planning What adventurers can learn from pilots - making plans for every possible scenario, mental checklists and rehearsing them Mitigating rescue resources through smart planning The issue of sharing locations to ‘special spots' on social media The down and UP sides of risk Why hardship is good for usLinks from this episode:Mike's website - outbackmike.comMike's book - Modern Day CastawayTimelapse video of Mike building his dugout canoeMike and his kids do the Snowies 10 Peaks VideoThanks to sponsor Paddy Pallin****Check out my 4 day (24-27 April) Intro to Navigation Retreat at Corinna, takayna/The Tarkine here.****

Satellite communication has been used for many years for emergencies during motorcycle adventures. But what about non-emergency situations? Sometimes, we might have a breakdown, need a part, be running late, feel sick, or decide to stay somewhere for an extra day. In such cases, messaging is the key to getting in touch with someone without causing panic. In this episode, Morris Shawn, President of Zoleo, discusses the importance of comprehensive satellite messaging for motorcycle riders. Additionally, Sean Steede's experience in British Columbia highlights the necessity of reliable communication, as he faced an unexpected situation during an off-road ride and had to use his satellite messenger's SOS button for assistance. Christine Yu is an award-winning journalist whose work focuses on the intersection of sports science and women athletes. Her writing has appeared in Outside, The Washington Post, Time, Runner's World, and other publications. She's a lifelong athlete and yoga teacher who loves running, surfing, and skiing. She lives in Brooklyn, New York. About the book:  “In the past half-century, women have achieved remarkable progress in the realm of athletics. More women are participating in sports and maintaining an active lifestyle throughout their lives. Whether they're elite athletes striving for excellence or passionate amateurs enjoying their athletic pursuits, women deserve a sports culture that empowers them.  This culture should offer training programs and equipment specifically designed to support their unique physiologies, along with nutrition and injury prevention guidelines grounded in scientific research and tailored to their individual experiences. Unfortunately, women have often received guidance based on research that fails to consider their distinct experiences and physical characteristics. Much of what we've accepted as the standard in exercise and sports science is rooted solely in studies conducted on men. But the landscape is changing for the better. Researchers are now conducting more inclusive studies to close the gender data gap. They're investigating how women can enhance their athletic performance, reduce the risk of injury, and maintain good health. In 'Up to Speed,' sports and health journalist Christine Yu unravels myths and dissects gender bias in light of real science. She advocates for new approaches that empower female athletes to excel at every life stage, from adolescence through adulthood, encompassing pregnancy, menopause, and beyond.  Christine delves into the latest research findings and shines a light on the researchers, athletes, and advocates challenging the status quo. They are pioneering innovative solutions to enhance the active and athletic lives of women and girls, ushering in a new era of gender equality in sports science and performance.” *** The Tough Girl Podcast is being sponsored throughout January by ZOLEO. #ChallengeWithZOLEO ZOLEO connects with your phone to provide seamless global messaging that follows you in and out of mobile network coverage — plus added safety features you can count on worldwide including industry-leading SOS alerting features. 24/7 monitoring and 24/7 access to non-emergency medical advice, check-in and weather forecasts. We venture into wild places to get away from it all.But when it comes to calling for help, letting someone know that we're delayed or even just giving our loved ones peace of mind, we have to rely on satellite communication methods - because mobile phone coverage often doesn't reach to where we want to go.In this episode, I speak with Linda Berryman from AMSA (that's the Australian Maritime Safety Authority) in Canberra. We do a deep dive into Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs), along with 2-way communication devices (such as Zoleo, InReach or SPOT trackers). And yep, we also talk about the satellite capability with the iPhone 14 and some other very exciting technology that is just around the corner.Visit the AMSA (Australian Maritime Safety Authority) websiteIf you accidentally activate your beacon, call: 1800 641 792Other AMSA Contacts

I caught up with German Alpinist Jost Kobusch, who now lives in Chamonix, France, to discuss his upcoming 2023/24 winter, no O's, solo attempt of Everest's West Ridge. No climber has reached the summit using this route and precise style. He will begin climbing on December 22, 2023, the beginning of the astronomical calendar winter. He will complete his climb no later than February 28, 2024. In 2019, Jost reached his high point of 7,329-meters/23,750-feet. His second attempt in the winter of 2021/22 ended much lower, around 6300 meters/20,669 feet, when the jet stream moved over Everest bringing hurricane-strength winds to the area. So he returns for his third climb, hoping to tag 8000 meters and get a good look at the Hornbein Couloir. He will pre-acclimatize on two 7000-meter peaks as part of his Altitude Academy,  a training program of sorts open to anyone. We cover a range of topics from what he learned from his previous attempts, his 2021 solo, the winter summit of Denali and even back to 2017 when he began climbing in this style in Pakistan's 7296m high Nangpai Gosum II (great video on YouTube.) We also discuss what he's doing differently this time, his style of solo, no O's, and more. I think you'll enjoy meeting this 31-year-old climber. He sees three issues: His physical condition The mountain conditions Weather You can follow his climb on his website, which has an excellent 3D GPS tracking map using Zoleo, and also on his social media channels Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.
