In 1942, several years into the Second World War, the British government sent out a series of bulletins requesting any personal photos the public might have of the French coastline. Odette Hallowes, a French woman living in the UK with her three young children, answered the call and was invited to London where she was offered a role in the Special Operations Executive (SOE). The SOE, formed under the direct orders of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, aimed to create a top-secret underground army to help local resistance movements and conduct espionage and sabotage in enemy-held territories. Odette eventually agreed and arrived in France in November 1942, where she worked undercover, under the code-name ‘Lise'.The following year, Odette was captured, interrogated, and tortured by the Gestapo. She was sentenced to death and transported to Ravensbrück, a concentration camp for women in northern Germany. In the midst of her suffering and isolation, Odette found solace in the most unexpected form – a tiny, beautiful green leaf on the otherwise desolate camp grounds. This leaf became her lifeline, a symbol of freedom beyond the prison walls.Shortly after her 33rd birthday and with the war coming to a close, Odette was handed over to the advancing American army and eventually reunited with her children. For her remarkable bravery and stark refusal to betray her fellow secret agents, she was awarded both the George Cross and France's Légion d'Honneur. She even had a major film made about her.Almost 80 years later, Odette's granddaughter, Sophie Parker was looking through some of Odette's possessions when she rediscovered that tiny leaf. As Sophie recounts, this leaf wasn't just a piece of foliage; it symbolised hope and survival and became a tangible connection to her grandmother's incredible story.Presenter: Asya Fouks Producer: Thomas Harding AssinderGet in touch: liveslessordinary@bbc.co.uk or WhatsApp: 0044 330 678 2784

Chris Finney is the youngest solider to be awarded the George Cross for his actions whilst serving in Iraq. Today Chris is a family man and entrepreneur with an enduring point of view of his heroic actions, his leadership and his legacy. The George Cross was created in September 1940 by King George VI and is ranked alongside the Victoria Cross. Chris joined the army cadets aged 13 and the regular army at the tender age of 16. He trained at the Army Foundation College in  Harrogate where by his own admission he grew up and started to understand what life without his parents would be like and how each day needed his full effort regardless of his personal levels of motivation as his life was now about discipline. Chris joined The Household Cavalry and Royal Armoured Corp which resulted in him being deployed to Iraq on operational duties at 18 years old. After only one week he crossed the border into Iraq and whilst on routine patrol Chris's armoured column was hit by what they didn't know at the time, was friendly fire delivered by an American A10 Tank Buster plane. During the ensuing chaos, breakdown of command and communications, Chris found himself in a life or death situation. Chris had been injured by shrapnel, his gunner had multiple injuries including being shot by a 30mm round, he was unable to get his rifle, his vehicle was on fire and others were now running for their lives as the plane began to come round for a second attack. Whilst Chris's actions saved the life of his gunner Alan, he and others also had to make the heart wrenching decision not to make an attempt to save another gunner as it was simply too dangerous at the time and they had to accept the loss of one life as opposed to loss of multiple lives . Chris was surprised to learn from his Commanding Officer that he was to be awarded the George Cross in recognition of his actions from her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth IIAfter leaving the military Chris had joined forces with Joe Calzaghe the former undisputed Middle Weight Boxing Champion of the World to raise funds for Help The Heroes. Today Chris is happily married with three children running two garden centres as an entrepreneur and business owner.

It is organised through the totally and Permanently Incapacitated Ex- Servicemen & Women Association and the RSL. It is an event unlike our two current commemorative events Anzac Day and Remembrance Day, both of which primarily commemorate the bravery and sacrifice of all our veterans and fallen in all our past wars and conflicts. Digger Day is a day of celebration rather then commemoration, showcasing our current serving men and women and more importantly our Nation's and Commonwealth's highest award for valour, the Victoria Cross. Whilst this event is and always will be for veterans, it has highlighted that the term Digger is not always about veterans, but is a term synonymous with  mateship, camaraderie, doing what is right and helping your mate in any situation no matter the cost. As such, the day also honours our civilian heroes, those recipients of the George Cross and Cross of Valour. These heroes performed acts of gallantry and valour, often on the spur of the moment in saving fellow Australians. For this they should be recognised and given the same accolade and respect as their military counterpart. Digger Day is about honouring and celebrating these Australian heroes. For generations of Brits the image of the Maltese was a contested one. By the 1980s Malta had emerged as a leading tourist destination and millions of Brits flocked to an island they associated with an heroic seige during the Second World War which led to the bestowal of the George Cross to all is people. But, there was a dark side too. The Maltese in London were commonly refered to as criminals who ran a variety of illcit trades in Soho. Where did that image come from? What effect did it have on the majority of Maltese residents who had nothing to do with crime, prostituion, strip-clubs, and porn? The roots of the image go back to the 1920s and, f or our presenter, it led to a startling revelation when he went to his girlfriend's home to meet the parents!

We explore how different religious groups in the United States regard 'replacement theory'. This is the idea that politicians are attempting to wipe out White Americans by 'replacing' them with non-White immigrants and Jewish people and is often associated with Christian nationalism. This 'theory' was referenced by the 18-year-old who is alleged to have shot 10 people dead in a supermarket in a mainly black area of Buffalo. Thirty years ago a group of students from different parts of the UK set about carving out dedicated spaces for Hindu young people at universities. The National Hindu Students Forum is now the largest Hindu student organisation outside of India, representing 10,000 students at Hindu societies across the UK. They marked their 30 year anniversary with a celebration at the House of Lords this week. Edwards speaks to Janhavi Dadarkar who was one of the founding members of the Forum in the early nineties, and Dhruvisha Joshi who's a Hindu student at Loughborough University. And the Commonwealth War Graves Commission is encouraging us to remember the people of different faiths who contributed to the world wars. We hear about Noor Inayat Khan, the Sufi Muslim pacifist who turned British resistance agent during the second world war. Noor was executed by the Nazis and cremated at Dachau. The future of the NHS hangs in the balance. Nearly five million people are waiting for treatment. Covid has pushed our health services to the limit, but years of underfunding meant it was already in crisis before the pandemic. Waiting lists were already rising, as were the huge staff shortages. But rather than addressing these problems as a priority, the government is proposing more drastic reorganisation of the NHS. Thousands of NHS workers, in dozens of towns and cities, protested on Saturday 3 July against the Tories' insulting 1% pay offer. Just days later, on 5 July, it was announced that workers in the NHS will be awarded the George Cross medal. Not something that will pay the bills for the thousands of nurses who are forced to visit food banks. And then, the next day, the government presented its health and care bill in parliament, spelling out plans for further privatisation and even less democratic oversight of our NHS. Socialist Party members have been helping to organise numerous protests since. In this podcast we speak to a number of our members both before and after the 3rd of July about the struggle for a 15% pay rise and what the health and social are bill is trying to do to our NHS. Demystifying the Queen's honours system. It is no surprise that the royal tradition of honouring high achievers goes back to the Norman Conquests. However, what is surprising is that the first ‘commoners' to be honoured en mass started as late as 1917, when the father of Queen Elizabeth II , King George V, began a new order of chivalry called the Order Of the British Empire. He did this to celebrate the outstanding contributions made by British citizen and soldiers to the war effort in WII and the system has remained in place to this day. Today, the Queen's honours are awarded twice per year: New year's awards and the Queen's official birthday. At these times, several types of awards are given, including: The Order of the Garter The order of the Thistle Order of St. Patrick Order of the British Empire Knight Grand Cross Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) Order of Merit Companions of Honour Order of the Bath Order of St. Michael and St. George Royal Victorian Order Royal Family Orders Commonwealth Orders Military Honours and Awards – several including The George Cross and the Elizabeth cross. These awards are not given lightly and are carefully considered before being bestowed. This was especially highlighted in 2012, when Fred Goodwin was stripped of his Knighthood, which he received in 2008 for the services to banking under the Labour Government ( the awards were retracted due to the dishonour of his actions which lead to RBS almost collapsing in 2008). It is a uniquely British honour which must ultimately be respected. However, it is no longer only accessible by the ‘Old Boys' Network': there are a lot of amazing people out there doing incredible things so around 6000 nominations are made each year. On average, approximately 3000 honours are awarded to people every year. Although it was once said that ‘people award you but God rewards you', there is certainly nothing like being acknowledged for all the hard work and the positive contribution you have made to your country. In addition, there is no denying that such awards tend to open doors and often make people more receptive to what you have to share. Dr Yvonne Thompson CBE, founder of WINTRADE was one of those people awarded 20 years ago for her contributions to Britain through her work in the areas of cultural diversity, small businesses and women in business. She has also had the privilege of sitting on the honours' committee for several years, helping to inform the Palace about nominees deserving of being acknowledged. As a result, she has a wealth of experience on the subject and would like to share what she has learned with you. The Most Noble Order of the Garter is an order of chivalry founded by King Edward III of England in 1348. It is the most senior order of knighthood in the British honours system, outranked in precedence only by the Victoria Cross and the George Cross. The Order of the Garter is dedicated to the image and arms of Saint George, England's patron saint. Appointments are made at the Sovereign's sole discretion. Membership of the Order is limited to the Sovereign, the Prince of Wales, and no more than 24 living members, or Companions. The order also includes supernumerary knights and ladies (e.g., members of the British royal family and foreign monarchs). New appointments to the Order of the Garter are often announced on St George's Day (23 April), as Saint George is the order's patron saint. The order's emblem is a garter with the motto Honi soit qui mal y pense (Middle French: "Shame on him who thinks evil of it") in gold lettering. Members of the order wear it on ceremonial occasions. King Edward III founded the Order of the Garter around the time of his claim to the French throne.[1] The traditional year of foundation is usually given as 1348 (when it was formally proclaimed). However, the Complete Peerage, under "The Founders of the Order of the Garter", states the order was first instituted on 23 April 1344, listing each founding member as knighted in 1344. The list includes Sir Sanchet D'Abrichecourt, who died on 20 October 1345. Other dates from 1344 to 1351 have also been proposed. The King's wardrobe account shows Garter habits first issued in the autumn of 1348. Also, its original statutes required that each member of the Order already be a knight (what would now be referred to as a knight bachelor) and some of the initial members listed were only knighted that year. The foundation is likely to have been inspired by the Spanish Order of the Band, established in about 1330. The earliest written mention of the Order is found in Tirant lo Blanch, a chivalric romance written in Catalan mainly by Valencian Joanot Martorell. It was first published in 1490. This book devotes a chapter to the description of the origin of the Order of the Garter. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/allthingsplantagenet/support

When Archbishop Laud investigated Massachusetts's activities, he learned that the charter had been taken to America, and prepared to take over the colony.  With the looming threat, the colony worked hard to keep its citizens from provoking a confrontation with the king. It was in this atmosphere that John Endicott cut the St. George Cross from Salem's royal standard.  In addition, as French, Dutch, Plymouth and Massachusetts settlers competed for land, a series of territorial disputes took place.

GRP 47-Co hosting for this episode is retired Army veteran, Nick Betts. I interviewed Stu Pearson a retired British Army soldier who served for 20 years with 3 Para. The Parachute Regiment is an elite British Infantry Battalion that has been deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq. Stu was on a rotation to Southern Afghanistan and was tasked with protecting the Kajaki Dam which provided power to a large number of people in the region. A Para sniper saw enemy activity that was out of effective targeting range so they planned to move to a concealed position closer to the enemy. En route to this position the sniper who was leading the movement stepped on a landmine. They'd walked right into a minefield. The Para's quickly stabilized him. They'd chosen flat ground not far so the MEDEVAC helicopter could extract the Para Trooper. While clearing the path Stu Pearson stepped on a landmine. Seven men were seriously wounded at Kajaki. Three of them lost legs, while Corporal Mark Wright, of the 3rd Battalion, The Parachute Regiment, suffered fatal wounds. The 27-year-old, just two months away from his wedding to Gill Urquhart, died after displaying bravery so ferocious that he would be posthumously awarded the highest of honors, the George Cross. Three of his comrades were also decorated for gallantry. Nick and I had a conversation with retired U.S Army Special Forces veteran David Pavlick. Pavlick is the CEO of Arsenal Democracy which specializes in Aerospace/Defense Research and Development. He served in Special Forces for 12 years with multiple deployments. David and Nick are both qualified Snipers.

This week Libby Purves is joined by Richard Rycroft, Sir Terry Wogan, Matt Croucher and Sona Jobarteh. After a long career in the police force, Richard Rycroft became an actor and also a stand-up comedian. He says that the two roles of policeman and actor are quite similar, but his only frustration as an actor is that no one will cast him as a policeman - he's just not convincing in that role apparently! He is appearing as the CEO in the improvisational show, 'The Office Party' which is running at London's Pleasance Theatre. Sir Terry Wogan has been a radio and TV broadcaster since the sixties, first in Ireland and then the BBC. He retired from his Radio 2 show 'Wake Up to Wogan' in 2009, which boasted a regular eight million listeners, including the TOGS - Terry's Old Geezers and Gals. His book, 'Wogan's Ireland', which was also a BBC series, recalls his memories of Ireland, from the politics to the personal. 'Wogan's Ireland' is published by Simon & Schuster. Matt Croucher GC joined the Royal Marines aged sixteen. He served in Iraq and in Afghanistan, where in 2007 he was awarded the George Cross when he jumped on a live grenade to protect his men in Afghanistan. Now an ambassador for the Royal British Legion, he has written the book 'The Royal British Legion: 90 Years of Heroes - the official 90th anniversary tribute', which is published by Collins. Sona Jobarteh is the first female Kora virtuoso from the prestigious West African Jobarteh Griot family, coming from a long line of hereditary musicians. She is also a singer, producer, film composer and multi-instrumentalist and is the granddaughter of the master Griot Amadu Bansang Jobarteh. She is performing at the Nour Festival at Leighton House Museum, London W14. Her latest CD 'FASIYA' is out on West African Guild Records. Producer: Chris Paling.
