What happens when you spend your life reading everyone else's emotions but feel disconnected from your own? What's the cost of peacekeeping at the expense of your truth? In this episode of the Your Own Medicine Podcast, I sit down with licensed psychotherapist Meg Josephson, whose new book Are You Mad at Me? comes out August 5th. We explore the fawn response—the lesser-known survival strategy characterized by overthinking, chronic conflict avoidance, and compulsive people-pleasing.Meg shares her personal story, including the impact of growing up with a rageful father and a mother with Alzheimer's, and how these shaped her fawning patterns. We also discuss:Anger, grief, and nervous system healingThe pressures of self-disclosure in a digital worldBoundaries that feel good in the bodyWriting about trauma with integrityWhy fawning is more than just “being nice”—it's a trauma responseThis is an honest, grounded, and tender conversation about what it means to reclaim your needs, your body, and your voice—especially when you've been wired to abandon them.
I am honored to connect with Meg Josephson today. She is a psychotherapist holding a Master of Social Work degree from Columbia University, with a concentration in clinical practice. She is also a meditation teacher. In our conversation, we discuss Meg's new book, Are You Mad at Me?, exploring fawning as a survival mechanism and why women are more likely to be conditioned into people-pleasing. We unpack the archetypes she refers to in her book, examining complex PTSD, and why fawners need to redefine their boundaries and acknowledge their grief and anger. Our discussion also touches on finding your voice during perimenopause and menopause, and why awareness is essential for healing. This conversation with Meg Josephson is truly invaluable, and her book is a vital resource for those who have experienced complex trauma in childhood or spent their lives people-pleasing and fawning. IN THIS EPISODE, YOU WILL LEARN: What fawning is, and why it becomes problematic if we keep on doing it when we are safe Why women and those in minority groups are more susceptible to fawning experiences The six archetypes of people pleasers that Meg describes in her book Finding a voice to describe the experiences you grew up with Rewiring your beliefs to allow the weaknesses of your parents to become your strengths Why grief and anger are so significant for fawners Relating to your emotions rather than trying to erase them Why is it so hard for fawners to maintain their boundaries? How perimenopause and menopause provide an opportunity for women to think more introspectively How healing begins with awareness Understanding that we cannot control the perceptions of others Connect with Cynthia Thurlow Follow on X Instagram LinkedIn Check out Cynthia's website Submit your questions to support@cynthiathurlow.com Connect with Meg Josephson On social media: @ Meg Josephson Meg's Peace of Mind Substack

These are people pleasers. They worry about what other people think of them. If someone doesn't return a phone call right away they fear that person is mad at them. If the boss offers criticism they worry they are going to be fired. You may be a people pleaser or know others who are. People pleasing is exhausting. While it is not unlike how other media (television, movies, books etc.) have altered language in the past, this is coming from a very different place for very different reasons. And the momentum seems to ramp up in middle schools. Here to explain this is Adam Aleksic, a linguist and content creator whose work has been mentioned in the New York Times, The Economist, and The Guardian. Check out a preview of the latest episode of Are You Mad at Me?, the podcast about the movie Shattered Glass hosted by PubliCola co-founders Erica Barnett and Josh Feit. Shattered Glass, starting Hayden Christensen, Peter Sarsgaard, Chloe Sevigny, and Steve Zahn (among many other names you'll recognize), is about a journalism scandal in the late 1990s in which a reporter, Stephen Glass, was found to have fabricated dozens of stories for The New Republic, Harpers, and many other traditional media outlets. Our guest for this month's show, Adam Penenberg (portrayed by Zahn in the film), was working for an early online outlet called Forbes Digital Tool when his editor, Kambiz Foroohar, demanded to know why he'd been scooped by Stephen Glass on a story about teenage hackers. As we now know, the story was completely fabricated—and Penenberg was the one who unraveled the fraud. In our interview, Penenberg tells us what it was like to uncover the story and reflects on what it was like to be a reporter for a digital startup going up against a venerable institution like The New Republic. He also offers his thoughts on why Glass decided to fabricate stories instead of just reporting them, and tells us what it was like talking to Steve Zahn as he was developing his character for the movie.Listen, like, and subscribe to Are You Mad at Me? on Apple or wherever you get your podcasts.Send us a text! Sisters Tyler and Cody Feder are on the #ReadingWithYourKids #Podcast to celebrate their children's book “Are You Mad At Me?” The story follows Opal, an anxious ostrich with a wiggly neck, as she embarks on a journey to pick up a dessert for her family's party. Along the way, Opal misinterprets the actions of various animals and believes they are mad at her. Through these encounters, Opal learns to consider alternative explanations for their behavior, helping her cope with her anxiety. The authors emphasize the importance of understanding and supporting children dealing with anxiety, highlighting that anxiety is a real and overwhelming experience for kids. They encourage parents to be curious and empathetic when their children exhibit anxious behavior, rather than dismissing it. The book provides a gentle and relatable way to start conversations about anxiety with children. It helps kids recognize that not everything is about them and that there are various factors influencing people's behavior. "Are You Mad at Me?" is a valuable resource for parents and educators to support children in managing their anxiety. THE ANCIENTS SAID: "(SELF-)CULTIVATION TAKES AN UNIMAGINABLE TIME (WHILE) ENLIGHTENMENT IN AN INSTANT IS ATTAINED." IF THE TRAINING IS EFFICIENT, ENLIGHTENMENT WILL BE ATTAINED IN ONE FINGERSNAP. IN DAYS GONE BY CH'AN MASTER HUI CHUEH OF LANG YEH MOUNTAIN, HAD A DISCIPLE WHO CALLED ON HIM FOR INSTRUCTION. THE MASTER TAUGHT HER TO EXAMINE INTO THE SENTENCE: "TAKE NO NOTICE." SHE FOLLOWED HIS INSTRUCTION STRICTLY WITHOUT BACKSLIDING. ONE DAY HER HOUSE CAUGHT FIRE, BUT SHE SAID: "TAKE NO NOTICE." ANOTHER DAY, HER SON FELL INTO THE WATER AND WHEN A BYSTANDER CALLED HER, SHE SAID: "TAKE NO NOTICE." SHE OBSERVED EXACTLY HER MASTER'S INSTRUCTION BY LAYING DOWN ALL CASUAL THOUGHTS. ONE DAY, AS HER HUSBAND LIT THE FIRE TO MAKE FRITTERS OF TWISTED DOUGH, SHE THREW INTO THE PAN FULL OF BOILING (VEGETABLE) OIL A BATTER WHICH MADE A NOISE. UPON HEARING THE NOISE, SHE WAS INSTANTLY ENLIGHTENED. THEN SHE THREW THE PAN OF OIL ON THE GROUND, CLAPPED HER HANDS AND LAUGHED. THINKING SHE WAS INSANE, HER HUSBAND SCOLDED HER AND SAID: "WHY DO YOU DO THIS? ARE YOU MAD?" SHE REPLIED: "TAKE NO NOTICE." THEN SHE WENT TO THE MASTER HUI CHUEH AND ASKED HIM TO VERIFY HER ACHIEVEMENT. THE MASTER CONFIRMED THAT SHE HAD OBTAINED THE HOLY FRUIT.
