Et år før hans sølvbryllup med Right to Dream gør Tom Vernon status.

0:30 | We focus on the powder keg that is Alberta politics throughout today's Real Talk. With so many storylines to follow, political scientist Lisa Young and former legislature correspondent Tom Vernon have a lot to talk about. But, we kick off the show with an homage to the teachers that made a huge impression on us (or not). Who was your "difference maker" growing up? Shoot us an email and let us know! SEND US YOUR THOUGHTS: talk@ryanjespersen.com 12:56 | Dr. Lisa Young publishes her political observations on her Substack "What Now?!? An Alberta Politics Newsletter". The University of Calgary political scientist lays out the political risks taken by Premier Danielle Smith in naming her (sort of) new look cabinet, including the gender dynamic. Lisa and Ryan also cover the premier's early support of a new arena in Calgary, and Leela Aheer's announcement she won't seek re-election as a UCP MLA. CHECK OUT DR. YOUNG'S SUBSTACK: https://lisayoung.substack.com/ 39:17 | In his first interview since leaving Global News, longtime political journalist Tom Vernon outlines his early impressions of Smith-led UCP government, and some of the storylines he's following ahead of the provincial election on May 29, 2023. Show Notes(2:47) Introducing John Walker and Tom Vernon(4:39) Learning about DroneUp and What They Do (6:04) What Challenges DroneUp Has Faced to Get Where They Are Today(9:17) The Benefits and Practicality of Drones(15:01) All about the Safety Measures and Best Practices of Drones (31:09) What Made NWA Ideal to Build DroneUp(35:53) What's to Come for DroneUp(48:58) Because Bentonville(55:06) Tom's and John's' Favorite Lessons Learned This Year and Closing ThoughtsLinksJames Bell Tom WalkerJohn Vernon DroneUpQuotes“[NWA] gave us a huge opportunity to expand, very much a crawl-walk-run approach to how we were going to move this. And to learn all of the lessons, not just about the drone, those are the things we kind of knew…You can build all of these amazing technologies and apps, but like any other agile and innovative company, all of the lessons you learn actually happen when you start doing it.” John Vernon, (31:27)“Our culture really aligns well with Walmart's. Ours is about doing it safely and then growing it appropriately…By being associated with Walmart, I don't think we were looked at as sort of this rogue drone company that's going to start flying all over, but we were partnered with Walmart and therefore we were expected to behave like Walmart, and just by virtue of our culture and how we operated, we did.” Tom Walker, (32:48)“Make no mistake about it…Northwest Arkansas is very very innovative. It's interesting because in some ways it still has the laid back feel of the parts of Arkansas that I used to really like; it wasn't a super fast-pace; it didn't feel that way. But if you look at the innovation that's going on around here…It's almost like this subtle underground community of hyper-innovation that's super impressive for the area.” Tom Walker, (34:33)“I think that sense of accomplishment overcomes the fear, uncertainty, or doubt of what's going to be next. Focusing whatever you can do to be the best that you can be in the moment that you're in has really been an enriching experience for everybody involved, and I think in emerging industries, it's another drawing factor that brings people in and helps people feel like they're a part of something that's more than just a day-to-day job.” John Vernon, (52:15) “Keep humble. I wouldn't say ‘Be humble,' it's ‘Keep humble.' We've come a long way but we've got a long way to go…I think more than anything, especially with the growth that we've experienced over the last year, it's very easy to get caught up in the big number that you see around growth and people count, but its also very humbling.” John Vernon, (55:06)

In this excellent episode we are honoured to have Professor Swaminathan of Mechanical Engineering at Cambridge University as well as the usual hosts who are Tom Vernon, Daniel Cheng, Christian Masiye, Charlie Plein and Alex Broome. We kick off the podcast showing the professor what we know about combustion from A-Level Chemistry and Physics and from there he kindly gives us in depths explanations of greener fuels especially MILD combustion. This really interested us as we were enlightened on how this technology could change the world of electricity/power generation. During the end of the podcast, the Professor went through his story of how he managed to become a professor at a world renowned university while also giving advice to students our age. If you enjoyed this podcast, you could listen to other podcasts that you may also enjoy and share about our podcast to friends and family. In this interesting episode we move into the more theory side of STEM with the usual hosts of Tom Vernon, Daniel Cheng, Charlie Plein, Christian Masiye, Seb Howles and Alex Broome's first podcast. We start off explaining why the Newtonian Laws of gravity (which is what you learn in school) is not always right and in fact wrong most of the time for very large masses which is where Einstein's theories of relativity come in and works for all applications until recently where their could be evidence in dark matter that may prove it wrong. Moving on from gravity we talk about artificial gravity in the second half of the podcast, namely spin gravity and 1g rocket gravity which are amazing concepts and have been used before in space and on Earth before! The most interesting part is that you would be feeling gravity in the midst of space without a planet's mass underneath your feet. If you enjoyed this podcast, you could check out other podcasts we have produced and could spread the word of it to friends and family.
In this episode we are joined by a special guest Mrs Richardson who teaches biology and is very knowledgeable in this topic area as well as the usual hosts Charlie Plein, Daniel Cheng, Tom Vernon and Adam Shann. We also debate on the ethical issues of gene edited medicine and the recent gene editing of two twin babies.
In this episode we are joined by Seb Howles, Christian Masiye, Fiona Trimby, Daniel Cheng, Tom Vernon, Adam Shann, Sophia Nwachukwu and Charlie Plein (who had to join through Teams halfway due to having to isolate). We discuss the uses of AI as well as the positives and negatives of it. This ranges from current uses such as in self-driving vehicles to even your phone. The We also explore how AI can be used to create an AI of yourself essentially giving your the ability to keep your presence around forever, and how AI may or is going so far that it may realise it can be independent from humanity and render the human race as useless and possibly destroying the human race. In the future episodes we plan to invite Mrs Richardson to discuss gene editing and CRISPR's work.

It’s tough to imagine our next guest going to work in tails and pinstripe trousers at Fortnum & Mason in their Wine and Spirits department, and on his gap year no less. Now, in his new role as Global Brand Ambassador for Woodford Reserve Bourbon, Tom Vernon can be a bit more casually dressed. Of course, when he’s rustling up a few Mint Juleps at the Kentucky Derby every year, his glad rags emerge! Tom is no stranger to Woodford Reserve, he’s been their UK Brand Ambassador for five years. Now as Global Brand Ambassador, his playing field has grown bigger. For someone whose first cocktail was a Manhattan, this job is a dream. With Declan McGurk, now Bar Manager of the Savoy Hotel’s American Bar, as a mentor, young Tom was bound for glory. Whilst in Leeds and Manchester, cities that turn out some of the greats in bartending, Tom learned his trade so well that it would eventually bring him right back to where it all started, with the Manhattan and the spirit it can’t do without, Bourbon. Where you can hear me drinking next: Next week, we go on holiday to Portugal, more specifically to Quinta do Lago in the Algarve, home to the luxury resort Four Seasons Fairways. We’ll be joined by the bar staff who showed me the coolest drink made with gin I have ever seen. Are you a regular listener of the Best Sips Worldwide podcast? Jereon’s grandmother came up with a plan - keep making elderflower liqueur and no one in her family could stay away. Needless to say it worked, worked so well that her grandson took up the helm and made all of Belgium want it as well. Little by little, RoomeR has grown from a small cottage industry, selling 200 bottles a month, to now producing over 100,000 bottles a year. Not only does it tastes delicious, but it couldn’t be prettier. Pure white elderflower petals dance around in the golden liqueur within its iconic, test-tube like bottle! Jereon and his partner, Tine, have worked hard to make RoomeR a socially responsible workplace, employing those who might not be able to work otherwise. They are dedicated to making their company as green as possible - no preservatives are used, their boxes and crates are recyclable and the bottles are returnable. With one sip, you are not only part of the RoomeR family, but also helping to change the world! Where you can hear me drinking next: I’ll be spending the American holiday July 4th at Imbibe Live - the UK’s most important drinks conference and what will we be drinking there? Why, Woodford Reserve Bourbon of course! Tom Vernon, their Global Brand Ambassador, is with me on that very independent of holidays to drink that very American of spirits!
