Science communicator and influencer The Space Gal, a.k.a. Emily Calandrelli, discusses using art as a tool to encourage STEAM literacy. In this episode, Emily tells us about her aerospace journey, exploding foam and making science fun as a host on educational programs, the opportunity to go to space, and how she uses children's books and social media to inspire and educate future aerospace generations. This one is going to be cool!Key Takeaways:Emily's space journey began when she attended college to become an engineer. She pursued engineering out of necessity but quickly learned she actually loved it.After college, Emily got the opportunity to host Fox's Xploration Outer Space. This job jumpstarted her science communication career.Emily has appeared on many science TV shows, including Bill Nye Saves the World. She also had her own Netflix show, Emily's Wonder Lab.During the pandemic, Emily took to social media to continue her mission of promoting STEAM literacy and inspiring future aerospace generations. In 2010, Emily got the opportunity to fly onboard the "Vomit Comet." This parabolic flight flies along the line of a parabola up to a maximum of 31 times in a row. This creates weightlessness on board for up to 22 seconds each time, as if in space.Emily is excited to be a future Blue Origin passenger to space. She will be one of the first 100 women to reach sub-orbit.Emily has written several books, with the most popular one appearing on the New York Times Best Sellers list. How do you go from a small town in Colorado to being a scientist-astronaut candidate in Australia? And how can you make space accessible for disabled astronauts? To find out, Dr. Charles Liu and co-host Allen Liu welcome scientist-astronaut candidate Celene Shimmen.   As always, though, we start off with the day's joyfully cool cosmic thing, the new study using the James Webb Space Telescope that disproves the detection of tryptophan, a complex amino acid, in the interstellar cloud IC 348. Or, as Chuck jokes, no sleepy turkeys in space.   Then we get to meet Celene Shimmen, who is a scientist-astronaut candidate in Australia. She's a physical therapy student who is already putting her research to work in the space industry.   Celene describes how she recently designed and implemented the Lower Extremity Motor Coordination Test in Microgravity for AstroAccess, a project she works with dedicated to promoting disability inclusion in human space exploration by paving the way for disabled astronauts. (You may remember Cady Coleman talking about working with AstroAccess in our recent episode, Sharing Space with Astronaut Cady Coleman, Part 1. You'll hear about Celene's acceptance into the scientist-astronaut training program for suborbital missions with the International Institute of Astronautical Sciences, beginning in 2023. She tells us about her upcoming parabolic flight where she'll be the principal investigator testing balance differences after acute exposure to weightlessness. Chuck asks whether the “Vomit Comet” is aptly named – Celene explains that she'll have to let us know, since her upcoming flight will have 16 periods of microgravity. Our first question comes from Anne, who asks, “What are some psychological or physical traits that make for a good astronaut?” Celene highlights the importance of training for strength, endurance, balance, and cardiovascular fitness, especially for upcoming, long-term missions on the moon. It turns out that while the moon has lower gravity, the encumbrance of spacesuits requires greater strength and endurance. Allen explains that lesser gravity doesn't mitigate some aspects of force and inertia that also require physical strength. Celene describes the psychological aspects of being an astronaut, and the need for mental resilience to cope with isolation and stressful situations, as well as problem solving skills and the ability to work as part of a team. You'll also find out about Celene's journey from growing up in a single-wide trailer in a town of 1000 residents in Colorado to studying hospitality in the Disney College Program in Florida, where she met her Australian husband. After watching “First Man”, the movie about Neil Armstrong, Celene decided she wanted to get into the space program. She applied to and was accepted by the Melbourne Space Program, working on a nano-satellite program. She also helped a humanoid robot take its first step, which inspired her to get involved with physiotherapy and the human body in space. Our next question is from “anonymous”: What part of the human body is most vulnerable in space? Celene explains that extended exposure to microgravity leads to muscle atrophy and bone density loss, which is still a big issue even with ongoing exercise. Even just a 14-day stay in space leaves returning astronauts with muscle weakness. Finally, we hear about Celene's desire to be deployed to the moon, should the opportunity arise. Upcoming lunar missions to the moon will likely last about 30 days each, including 7 days of activity on the lunar surface. If you'd like to reach out to Celene and chat, you can follow her on Instagram @spaceptcelene and on LinkedIn and Facebook as Celene Shimmen. You can also find out more about AstroAccess here. How do planets form out of dust particles? And what does that have to do with fluid dynamics? To find out, Dr. Charles Liu and co-host Allen Liu welcome astrophysicist Dr. Holly Capelo from the University of Bern in Switzerland.   As always, though, we start off with the day's joyfully cool cosmic thing, which takes us to the Observatory of Paris, where a group of scientists are delving into the formation of planetesimals. What are they, where do they come from, and when do they form? Holly dives right in to explain what we know about them, and what forces might prevent planetesimals from growing into planets. Along the way, she blows Chuck's mind about planet formation and accretion disks.   Next, Dr. Capelo uses Alice in Wonderland to help describe her extensive experiments flying on Novespace's Air Zero-G (the European equivalent of NASA's “Vomit Comet”) flying in parabolas in order to better understand fluid dynamics, aerodynamic drag and the impact of freefall, microgravity and hypergravity on dust particles.   For our first question this episode, Allen asks Holly about what makes up interplanetary debris, now and in the past. You'll learn all about ice lines, the impact of vacuum on water vapor and dust particles, minimum mass solar nebulas, density distributions and how much debris there actually is floating around our solar system.    You'll also hear a little bit about Holly's other experiences, as a dancer, and how grad school made it harder to stay in shape.   Our next question revolves around the possible atmospheres of the Moon, comets and planetesimals. Holly explains how we have evidence of transitory events, like outgassing. She also tells us about an upcoming “comet interceptor” mission to study comets that will place a satellite at a Lagrange point to wait for a comet to enter our solar system and then fly to meet it.    If you'd like to know more about Holly and her experiments, you can follow her on Twitter @hollycapelo.   We hope you enjoy this episode of The LIUniverse, and, if you do, please support us on Patreon.    Credits for Images Used in this Episode: Accretion disks imaged by ALMA – European Southern Observatory, CC BY 4.0 Phase diagram of water – Hokanomono & Cmglee on Wikimedia, CC BY-SA 3.0 Novespace's Air Zero-G aircraft – Marc Lacoste, CC BY-SA 4.0 Illustration of Rosetta at comet 67P – Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt, CC-BY 3.0

In August 2015 Simone Giertz posted an 8-second long, toothbrush machine video, showing a machine she designed to remove the drudgery of manual tooth brushing. It was funny, ridiculous, and got shared just about everywhere.  That video would come to define much of what Simone's videos would be about: making machines that sort of make sense. Like an alarm clock that slaps you awake or a breakfast machine that ensures you will be cleaning up a bunch of Cheerios. It wouldn't be long before fans had dubbed her the Queen of Shitty Robots, a title that she embraced, but has kind of moved away from in the past couple years as she has expanded to building an even wider range of projects. Things like remodeling a trailer, making a coffee table out of burnt matches, and converting a Tesla into a pickup, all presented in her casual, conversational style and wry humor. And sometimes her videos aren't projects, but experiences, like when she got weightless in the Vomit Comet or talked candidly about her brain surgery. Simone has a beautiful workshop in LA where she uses all kinds of materials and techniques to create all kinds of projects limited only by her imagination. Sunshine (2007 Film) Movie Cast and Crew Directed by Danny Boyle: After gaining international prominence following his directorial efforts in Trainspotting and 28 Days Later, Boyle decided to wade into the science fiction genre and was tagged to direct Sunshine. He would later direct the award winning films Slumdog Millionaire and 127 Hours. Written by Alex Garland: Garland and Boyle had previously teamed up together to make 28 Days Later and was asked to collaborate again for the making Sunshine. Cillian Murphy as Robert Capa: He had also worked with Boyle after starring in 28 Days Later, but had gained prominence after appearing in Batman Begins. Chris Evans as James Mace: Before being cast as Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he had previously starred in the Fantastic Four films as well as the parody film Not Another Teen Movie Rose Byrne as Cassie: After appearing in the epic film Troy, she was handpicked by Boyle to appear in this film Rose Byrne provided the voice of Mother in Netflix's I Am Mother, check out our review Michelle Yeoh as Corazon: Following appearances in Tomorrow Never Dies, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Memoirs of a Geisha, Boyle gave her carte blanche to pick whatever role she wanted even saying a character could and would be rewritten to fit her gender. Also Starring: Cliff Curtis as Searle, Hiroyuki Sanada as Kaneda, Troy Garity as Harvey, Benedict Wong as Troy, and Mark Strong as Pinbacker “The Right Stuff” for Sunshine As Chris and Sean outline in the podcast episode, Boyle had the actors go through an extensive to-do list in order to prepare for their roles. This list included: Forced to live together as the crew of the Icarus 2 would've been living together for 16 months at the beginning of the film Enrolled in space training/SCUBA classes Watched The Right Stuff Toured a nuclear submarine to provide a sense of claustrophobia Rode on a KC-135 “Vomit Comet” as well as a Boeing 747 simulator Read Moondust which is a collection of stories from astronauts who have walked on the Moon As this list was meant to prepare non-astronauts for a space, real NASA astronauts go through an extensive training program which includes: Space shuttle/space craft basics in case repairs are necessary Medical procedures to care for injured crewmates Survival training in case they are required to live in space without aid They also take language courses in Russian in case they need to communicate with the Russian Space Agency One of the holes pointed out in our podcast is that on a typical space mission, the astronauts are cross trained to perform one another's tasks in case something catastrophic were to happen with one of the other crewmates. This is an aspect not typically discussed in other space movies. When one crew member is incapacitated or killed, it doesn't immediately sink the mission, but rather those duties of that crew member are then dispersed among the remaining crew. Astronaut crews are millions of miles away from Earth and any sort of aid so they are on their own and must be able to function smoothly with any type of unexpected incident. Horror in Space! Roughly halfway through the film's second act, the crew of the Icarus 2 discovers the derelict spacecraft of the Icarus 1 crew. They go aboard to search for supplies hopefully to maybe find out why the crew went missing and their mission failed. Sometime during this excursion, the former captain of the Icarus 1, Pinbacker, sneaks aboard the Icarus 2 and begins to sabotage the mission and kill the remaining

We’re re-branding…again! This episode would have been “The Next 200 Project” but from now on we’ll go by “The Ellises’ Analysis” (just to twist your tongue into a few knots). If you only ever thought of this podcast as “The Top 100 Project” anyway, then, well, nothing to see here. As for episode #351, we have the privilege of tackling one of the best reality-based space films ever made. Apollo 13 is a thrilling and inspiring docu-drama, but it’s also a very believable procedural. Ron Howard has never directed anything better than this. It’s also another in a long line of bittersweet Tom Hanks movies. He’s excellent, of course, but all the actors (particularly Ed Harris) are dynamite. We DO get into some alternate casting choices---as we did on Inside Out last week---but that’s just for fun because this cast is aces. And let’s hear it for the teamwork of all the real-life people involved in this mission (including their families), but also of course for the cast & crew of this gripping movie. Oh, and let’s also hear it for that heroic LEM! Guenter will strap you in tight as we break down the wonderful Apollo 13. Well, Actually: Other movies DID use the KC 135 “Vomit Comet” to shoot some weightless scenes, including The Mummy a few years ago (the Tom Cruise one). Also, James Horner DID win 2 Oscars for Titanic (for the music score and for co-writing “My Heart Will Go On” with Will Jennings, not with Celine Dion). If you have to help 3 guys get out of an outer-space pickle, you’ll need some Sparkplug Coffee to help you stay awake. They’ve got so much great stuff in addition to the fine, fine coffee. The discount they offer when you use our promo code (“top100project”) will nab you 20% off. Does Twitter suit ya? You can find us @moviefiend51 and @bevellisellis Our website is top100project.com We’re off next week to enjoy some R&R during the Canada Day week. When The Ellises’ Analysis gets back to it on July 6th, we’ll shed some heavenly tears for Ghost.

Dean's List - Fractured Fairy Tales from Bobcat History

The year was 1980. Or maybe 1981. It's a bit blurry to be honest.  But it seemed like the perfect time to pack 26 sportswriters, television reporters, and radio broadcasters on to a semi-retired Convair 440 for a whirlwind tour of Big Sky Conference spring football camps. With stops in Flagstaff, Ogden, Pocatello, Moscow, Bozeman, Missoula, Boise and a grand finale - kind of - in Reno, the itinerary promised adventure, excitement and unfettered access to players and coaches.  Unfortunately, reality came with a barf bag. This is the short but glorious tale of the singular Big Sky Conference Sky Writers' Tour, as told by Dean Alexander. So buckle up. Stow away your tray tables and return your seat backs to their original upright and locked positions. Then sit back and enjoy an unforgettable ride on the Vomit Comet...   KA

Episode 104 is all about taking one for the team. Do we mean that team of military mavericks doing what it takes to get the treasure and the cursed mummy? No, we mean your team of podcasters doing what it takes to watch the Tom Cruise vehicle known as “The Mummy”(2017). “Oh come on- is it really that bad?” you might ask. Well, they spent a lot of money on it. It had underwater swimming zombies. They built realistic foam props inside a jet called “the Vomit Comet” in order to film a zero G scene of a jet crashing. Because Tom said. And who knows horror better than Tom Cruise? But, the plot isn’t clear at all. Jolyon even tried to read the opinions of people who defended the movie and couldn’t find any. Will suspects that’s because the movie is “Dull, boring and incompetent”. Universal launching their “Dark Universe” with a movie that is not scary at all is a big risk, which doesn’t seem to be paying off. This may explain the postponement of the “Bride of Frankenstein” re-make. Perhaps they’ll do some better writing and come back ready to go. So, give the episode a listen and remember that we’re not digging our own grave and we’re going down swinging! #horror #horrormovies #horrornerd #horroraddict #horrorjunkie #monsterkid #bmovie #scarymovies #monstermovie #podcast #chewingthescenery #zombies #zombie #VHS #moviemonsters #freepodcast #denver #colorado #31daysofhalloween #ahorrormovieaday #everydayishalloween #halloween #horrorpodcast #middletooth #themummy #mummy #tomcruise #darkuniverse #universalmonsters
