The Only Thing That Has Changed is Everything: A Conversation with Amtech CEO Jay Patel

What truly sets successful electronics manufacturing companies apart in times of global uncertainty? Find out as I speaks with Jay Patel of Amtech at APEX 2025 in this thought-provoking conversation about leadership, adaptation, and competitive advantage in the EMS industry. The past year has brought extraordinary change – from political shifts to escalating trade wars – yet Patel maintains the refreshing perspective that disruption creates opportunity for those bold enough to embrace it. "Only one thing has changed and that's everything," he observes, capturing the perpetual state of transformation that characterizes modern manufacturing. Rather than viewing challenges as burdens, Patel reframes them as the very reason the industry exists: solving complex problems for their customers requires talented professionals. The discussion explores the psychological dimension of leadership, highlighting how distinguishing between personal shortcomings and industry-wide challenges transforms morale and effectiveness. Patel shares insights gleaned from the EMS Leadership Summit, where peer-to-peer exchanges provide both practical solutions and validation that others face similar obstacles. While Amtech focuses on specific non-consumer market segments with potential for reshoring growth, the conversation reveals a deeper truth about manufacturing excellence."Our competitive advantage is not the gear that we have," Patel emphasizes. "It is the culture that we build." This profound insight challenges any assumption that technological superiority alone determines success. In an industry where equipment and capability become table stakes, with numerous vendors offering similar solutions, organizational culture emerges as the decisive competitive edge. The integration of advanced technologies like AI and IoT matters, but primarily as tools that free people to focus on delivering exceptional customer value.Ready to rethink what drives manufacturing success? Listen now and discover why your company culture might be more valuable than your equipment lineup. EMS@C-Level Live at APEX is sponsored by global inspection leaders Koh Young (https://www.kohyoung.com) and Creative Electron (https://creativeelectron.com)EMS@C-Level is sponsored by global inspection leaders Koh Young (https://www.kohyoung.com) and Creative Electron (https://creativeelectron.com) You can see video versions of all of the EMS@C-Level pods on our YouTube playlist.

Ajaan Geoff -- Mastering Our Inner World

**Please note special time for this call. "Each of us lives in many different worlds. There's the world of work, the world of our family, and our inner worlds. These worlds inside are the ones we're most responsible for, because no one else can take care of them." - Ajaan Geoff Thanissaro Bhikku, an American Buddhist monk of the Kammatthana (Thai Forest) tradition and more commonly known as Ajaan Geoff, embarked on a path outside his mainstream American upbringing soon after graduating from Oberlin College in 1971. Having eschewed the campus activism of his day because he didn't want to follow a crowd, Ajaan Geoff once described the defining issue of the day for him not as being the Vietnam War, but a friend's attempted suicide. When the opportunity to meditate in a religious studies class arose for him, he said "I was ripe for it. I saw it as a skill I could master, whereas Christianity only had prayer, which was pretty hit-or-miss." Born in 1949 as Geoffrey DeGraff, he grew up in Long Island where his father had a potato farm. After graduating from Oberlin College in 1971 with a degree in European Intellectual History, he traveled to Thailand, where he eventually came to study meditation under Ajaan Fuang Jotiko, and then proceeded to become an ordained monk in 1976. His life in the Thai jungles was spartan and the rigorous schedule and training in meditation was a hard one; but it was one that forged monks of a high standard of knowledge and skill in the practice. The Thai Forest tradition is known for upholding the strict standards of 200+ precepts of external conduct for monks as originally laid out by the Buddha, called the Vinaya. For example, the monks don't handle money and cannot ask for anything that is not freely offered; eat only one meal a day, before noon; do not spend time alone with a woman, or drive. In his early days as a monk, Ajaan Geoff himself didn't think much of the Vinaya. "They were just rules I had to put up with if I wanted to stay in Thailand and meditate. But then I began to see that every time something went wrong in the community, it was because someone had broken a rule. I also began to see the rules as protection for me in my practice." Five years after this teacher's death, he left Thailand and came to San Diego County, USA, in 1991 at Ajaan Suwat's invitation to help establish Metta Forest Monastery. It is the first monastery in the Thai Forest Tradition in the U.S. Ajaan Geoff was appointed as its Abbott in 1993. Nestled among groves of avocado trees with a spectacular view of Mt. Palomar, the monastery serves as a place of apprenticeship for the monks to master their inner worlds through meditation and the practice of vinaya. For thousands of outsiders who come to the monastery for visits and stays each year, it offers an opportunity to engage and live around monks who have dedicated their lives to cultivate virtue, concentration and discernment. They meditate, receive the teachings and make offerings. All of this happens in a completely non-transactional way, that Ajaan Geoff calls an economy of gifts, "an atmosphere where mutual compassion and concern are the medium of exchange; and purity of heart, the bottom line." This also helps them keep the practice and teaching in its pure form without getting commoditized in accordance with popular likes and dislikes. "In this country of ours, where democracy and the marketplace are all-powerful, the question of what sells determines what's Dhamma, even if it can't walk or fly. And who loses out? We lose out. The Dhamma doesn't lose out; it's always what it is." Ajaan Geoff is also a prolific author of books and essays on both Buddhist practice and theory. The topics range from those that have everyday use, such as meditation guides (With Each And Every Breath), to how to deal with aging, illness and dying (Undaunted), to more niche topics, such as the Buddha's use of humor in his teachings (The Buddha Smiles), and the influence of Western Romanticism in the way Buddhism is taught in the west (Buddhist Romanticism). In addition, he is a well-respected scholar and Translator of the original Buddhist Pali scriptures. In keeping with the Forest Tradition, all his books, essays and daily dhamma talks are offered freely through their website. Join us for a wisdom talk with this inspiring teacher, moderated by Jay Patel and Rahul Brown.

Yoga is crazy popular in the United States. And over the last decade, it's only gotten more popular. In 2021, 34 million Americans took a yoga class. That's up 15 million from a decade earlier. And the industry has adapted to Western exercise habits. It's not a strictly spiritual practice here. It's a way to build muscle tone and balance. It's also a very competitive industry. Dozens of yoga studios have come and gone in Lafayette over the years.  Toni Heinen spent much of the last decade as a Pilates and yoga instructor in other peoples' studios. In 2019, after 14 years in the yoga biz, she bought her own studio: GoodWolf Yoga Studio. Since then, Toni has grown the operation with a lot of love and community support. Today the operation employs 27 people to run classes from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m.  Good Wolf runs classes for all experience levels, including hot yoga, power yoga and Tabata yoga, their most popular course.   Toni is a certified yoga and Barre instructor, co-owns Ami's Kitchen and is the creator of “Booty Ballet.”   Yoga's popularity in Acadiana shouldn't be all that surprising. Indian culture has had a presence here for decades. Lafayette has long attracted students and professionals from the Indian subcontinent. Folks like Jay Patel, who came to Lafayette in 1978 to work as a mechanical engineer.  Jay helped anchor a growing presence of Hindu people by founding the Acadiana India Association in 1991. In 2013, Jay stepped away from AIA - to build a temple.  Jay comes from a family of temple builders. His father and uncle each built one. And for years, the Acadiana Hindu community gathered without one. In 2019, Jay opened the Sri Krushna Balaji Mandir in Lafayette. "Mandir" is the Hindi word for temple.  Out to Lunch Acadiana is recorded live over lunch at Tula Tacos and Amigos in downtown Lafayette. Ep.K108: About the UK - Coronavirus-free Scottish island up for auction Many countries are struggling with the fourth wave of the coronavirus, with countries implementing lockdown and stay-at-home order. In response, a British auction house is selling a beautiful island in Scotland for £80,000 (about NT$3.15 million), which comes with a beautiful castle. According to CNN, this small island in the Scottish Highlands covers 11 acres is surrounded by beautiful and tranquil lochs. Also, you can enjoy living on the island with zero chance of intrusion due to the remote location. Future Property, the British auction house that published the island's bid information, said the island had been uninhabited for 500 years and had always been owned by the same family.  Student Loan Debt is Impacting Millennials Economic Wellbeing with Steve Ferguson and Jay Patel | Changing Higher Ed 070

Changing Higher Ed

Student loan debt is impacting millennials’ a pressing topic as students graduate from higher education having significant debt. This podcast will feature Steve Ferguson and Jay Patel, who have developed a new way for students to pay off their debt in significantly less time than that currently takes. Drowning in Debt The cost of education has gone up in real dollars as per inflation, due to multiple reasons, such as Prop 13 and state budget cuts to higher education. At the same time, the cost to students has increased significantly, as state funding to education has dropped and students are required to pay. Traditionally, people paid for an education out-of-pocket and from savings. However, the amount that students and families have to pay has gone up significantly more because there is less state government contribution. Title IV came into existence in 1965, and student loans came into play in the 1980s. These loans filled a gap and helped more people go to school. However, colleges and universities significantly increased the cost of tuition as federal funding for loans became available. This led to the advent of the current debt-load issue where student debt is now $1.7 trillion. This is the largest amount owed by society collectively behind mortgages. Over the years, the Department of Education has increased the amount of borrowing available to students. That money is mostly used to pay for tuition, but it also can be used to cover other expenses, such as the cost of housing. Starting around 2008-09, many private lenders such as Wells Fargo, CitiBank and Bank of America got out of the student loan business, causing the federal government to increasingly fill that gap. Since then, the student debt issue has skyrocketed. The nation is at $1.7 trillion in outstanding debt and 45 million borrowers in the U.S. have some Title IV debt. The average debt is over $37,000, and it is crippling for individuals to come out of college with this level of debt load. According to recent numbers, there are 60,000 borrowers who are over 62 years of age who have a combined total debt of $18.5 billion owed to the federal government. That is over $300,000 per borrower. This group is close to qualifying for Social Security while having a large outstanding student loan. Another significant threat to the nation’s economy is the debt load for the 25-34 year-old age group, which currently stands at about $90 billion. There are 310,000 borrowers who owe roughly $300,000 per borrower. These significant debt loads can potentially impact the ability for individuals to start families, buy houses and cars, etc. While many of these individuals who have these debts used these funds to earn a graduate degree, undergraduates also are coming out of school with $30,000-$40,000 in debt. These smaller amounts also impact individuals’ ability to buy a house and start a family. Innovation in Student Debt Repayment There hasn’t been a lot of innovation in student loan repayment previously. Many suggest that loans can be paid in a decade, but in reality that time period extends to 20-30 years. SLR 67 is a new type of investment vehicle that is used to pay for education. This savings and investment program uses a different strategy that came out of conversations with more than 800 stakeholders, including individuals, brokers, dealers and universities. This investment vehicle is designed for students and their families to repay their current or future loan faster. The SLR 67 has an interactive broker so when the student or family opens an account, they receive an automated investment strategy management plan over a specified time period. They can select a one-time investment or recurring investment. This gives individuals flexibility based on their income. The contribution program builds the principal to pay off the student loan. Using two basic financial principles—time/value/money and compounded interest—to accelerate what is put toward the principal. This program also is going to be marketed to employers to consider as a match for their employees. This could significantly increase the amount of money that could go into this product to help pay off student loan debt. This could be an employee retention tool, especially if it becomes tax-deductible for employers. The product has been launched and an account can be created and quickly funded so the automated strategy will take over. The company is focusing initially on the higher earner who has high debt but will expand the product’s scope in the future. Three Recommendations for Higher Education Leaders Ferguson and Patel suggested three takeaways for higher education leaders: From a university standpoint, institutions are measured on their repayment rates. They have an obligation to monitor their repayment rates to ensure that they don’t come under a 30% cohort default rate. This is a real issue for smaller institutions because just a few borrowers can affect the institution’s cohort default rate. The college or university also has a social and moral obligation to provide information to help students repay their debts since the institution was the one that profited. Employers also benefit from the students who enter their workforce. Therefore, employers can step up and help their employees figure out creative ways to repay the student loans through creating a match program. This financial tool brings innovation to a part of society that hasn’t had much. This tool is trying to help all parties, whether they are large borrowers or individuals who have smaller student loans. Bullet Points The cost of higher education has increased significantly over the years due to multiple reasons, which has led to larger student debt. Traditionally, people paid for higher education out-of-pocket and from savings. Title IV loans didn’t come into play until the 1970s. There was a significant increase in the cost of tuition as these federal funds became available. Over the years, the Department of Education has increased the amount of borrowing available to students. That money is mostly used to pay for tuition, but it also is available for students to cover for other expenses, such as the cost of housing. As private lenders dropped out of this market, the federal government stepped in and took over a larger share. Title IV filled a gap and helped more people go to school, but also led to this debt-load issue where Title IV debts are now $1.7 trillion. This is the largest amount owed by society collectively other than mortgages. The nation is at $1.7 trillion in outstanding debt and 46 million borrowers in the U.S. have some Title IV debt. There are 60,000 borrowers over the age of 62 who have a combined total debt of $18.5 billion owed to the federal government. That is over $300,000 per borrower. Using two basic financial principles—time/value/money and compounded interest—this financial tool accelerates what is put toward the principal. This program is starting with the wealthier graduates—doctors and lawyers—who have larger student debt, but will eventually be offered to graduates with smaller student loan debt burden. EKG showed anteroseptal and lateral STE with reciprocal ST depressions in the inferior leads. High-sensitivity troponin was elevated at 333 ng/mL. Emergent LHC showed a long and narrow left main with areas of additional contrast filling into a false lumen with no flow in the LAD. RCA and LCx were normal appearing (make sure you check out the angiogram videos below!). IVUS showed dissection and heavy thrombus burden in the left main artery. Shortly after the diagnostic angiogram, the patient went into V-fib arrest and received one shock with ROSC. Amiodarone was started and an Impella CP was placed for additional left ventricular support. ECMO and emergent CABG were not readily available at this time so the interventional team attempted revascularization with PCI to the left main given patient's hemodynamic instability from ongoing ischemia. However, even after PCI to left main, flow to LAD remained poor and the LCx now also appeared occluded. The decision was made to cease further attempts at revascularization. Unfortunately, post-procedure TTE showed a reduced EF of 22% with anterior and anterolateral hypokinesis. She was transferred to CCU on maximal Impella support. Patient eventually developed acute renal and liver failure secondary to cardiogenic shock and suffered an additional V-fib arrest with ROSC. Eventually, Ronald Reagan UCLA was contacted for transfer and the mobile ECMO team was dispatched. They placed the patient on VA-ECMO in the outside facility and transferred her to Ronald Reagan UCLA. At Ronald Reagan, revascularization was attempted given persistent cardiogenic shock and 3 stents were successfully deployed in the LAD. She was eventually weaned off of both Impella and ECMO after successful PCIs to LAD. However, TTE showed persistently low EF and patient eventually underwent successful heart-kidney transplantation. Olga Tokarczuk napisała w mediach społecznościowych: "Radość i wzruszenie odebrały mi mowę. Literackim Noblem zostało dotąd uhonorowanych czworo Polaków - Henryk Sienkiewicz, Władysław Reymont, Czesław Miłosz i Wisława Szymborska. (IAR)

Welcome to Episode 076 of F-Stop Collaborate and Listen with Charlotte Gibb! Charlotte spent her childhood romping around and exploring the wilderness areas in the mountains near her northern California home. The youngest of nine children, her father was an avid mountain climber and nature lover, and he made sure his kids were instilled with his passion for the outdoors. After he died in a climbing accident when Charlotte was very young, her mother continued to promote spending time in nature, ensuring that their vacations were spent outdoors camping, hiking and exploring. Charlotte studied journalism in college for two years and worked for her city's newspaper, at which point she discovered that journalism wasn't for her. She transferred to the Academy of Art University in San Francisco and studied graphic design instead. She bought a used Beseler enlarger and turned her spare bedroom into a darkroom, where she spent countless hours in the dark happily experimenting with printmaking. In the years following art school, she went to work as an art director for an ad agency, built a successful design business, got married, raised two wonderful sons, and currently uses her camera to tell stories of the natural world.  We covered some great topics this week, including: 1. Her start in a design agency and how it led her to photography. 2. Working alone vs. in a group. 3. Intimate landscapes. 4. Discovering your vision. 5. Photo contests and why you should enter them. Charlotte likes "Lens Culture." Please consider supporting the podcast on Patreon! There's a ton of bonus content over there for subscribers! Your support is critical - it helps with production costs and to improve the podcast over time. Thanks! Even $1 / mo helps a lot! Thanks! Over on Patreon this week, Charlotte shares her wisdom on print-making and how it can make you a better landscape photographer. We cover pricing, papers, framing, materials, printers, and lots more - 24 minutes of awesome bonus material!   Here are the photographers that Charlotte recommended for the podcast: 1. Varina and Jay Patel. 2. Michael Frye. 3. Keith Walklet. 4. Evan Russell.   Head to my blog at www.mattpaynephotography.com for the full liner notes and links!
