Whitney Geller is Co-founder and Partner of Whitman Emorson, a Toronto-based design studio focused on solving complex problems with a human touch. She is also Co-founder of Jems, a female-founded, body-safe condom and lube product line. Whitney has worked at the forefront of strategic design with global clients such as MTV, Coca-Cola, Oprah Winfrey, and the Mayo Clinic while at Bruce Mau Design. Yasemin Emory is Co-founder and Partner of Whitman Emorson. It is a team of designers, strategists, writers, editors, and creative thinkers bound by the desire to produce thoughtful and responsive work. She is also Co-founder of Jems, built on the desire to naturalize sex and condom use and disrupt a toxic industry. Previously, Yasemin served as the Senior Director of CO-OP and Associate Art Director at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. In this episode… Have you ever wondered how groundbreaking companies are born? Can an idea that challenges the status quo transform not only an industry, but perceptions as well? Whitney Geller and Yasemin Emory unpack this notion by sharing their story of transitioning from leading the successful design agency Whitman Emorson to challenging stereotypes in the safer sex industry with their brand, Jems Condoms. The duo addresses the lack of representation and dated messaging in the existing market, combining their design prowess with a mission to make condom buying and use more approachable and stigma-free. By cultivating a collaborative studio culture and ambitious leadership at Whitman Emorson, they granted themselves the freedom to venture into the product space, driven by values and a desire to make an impact. In this episode of Inspired Insider Podcast, Dr. Jeremy Weisz interviews Whitney Geller and Yasemin Emory, Co-founders of Whitman Emorson, about their entrepreneurial journey from running a creative agency to launching a safer sex brand. They share how they navigated the complexities of creating a start-up without compromising the integrity and success of their original agency, setting a culture that embraces a life-work balance, and tackling regulatory challenges in advertising condoms.

#279 - Rachel Renock, CEO of Wethos - on daring to be different

Value Inspiration Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 6, 2023 54:15

This podcast interview focuses on product innovation that has the power to enable freelancers to take the guesswork out of running their business. My guest is Rachel Renock, Co-founder and CEO of Wethos. Rachel Renock has held various positions in the creative industry since 2009. Digital Design Intern at VOX Global. Associate Art Director at G2 Worldwide. Art Director and Visual Designer at Havas Worldwide and, ultimately, in 2015, a freelance role as a Photographer/ Designer at OPAM. After quitting her job in advertising to pursue more meaningful work, she co-founded a freelance studio to put together project-based teams for nonprofit organizations. In just 18 months, this generated $1.4 million in gross revenue and deployed over 150 diverse creative teams of the best and brightest.  But with their fast growth came the chaos of scale and a mountain of spreadsheets. From figuring out what to charge to putting scopes of work together to managing invoices and payments to collaborators, the paperwork never seemed to end. This became the founding idea for Wethos, which she leads as the CEO.  Wethos is solving arguably the most difficult challenge in the freelance economy.  Vision: Put more money into the pockets of independents everywhere Their mission: make it easier for founders to start and scale their freelance businesses and help more people break 6-figures.  And this inspired me, and hence I invited Rachel to my podcast. We explore what's broken in the way freelancers manage their business. Rachel shares her vision of how to solve this. She then elaborates on how she's been addressing the problem radically differently from the start - and how that helped to create strong momentum, growing from serving 100 freelancers in 2020, to well over 80.000 businesses today. She shares her lessons learned, what to pay attention to (and what not). Last but not least, she shares her perspective on creating a SaaS business people start talking about and keep talking about. Here's one of her quotes: One thing that we were really cognizant of is making sure that we were focusing on profitability and not productivity, I think there is a challenge there. There is a lot of productivity software. There are a lot of software providers out there that are going to tell you, we're going to save you my time, we're gonna make you more efficient.  With our software, we want it to help freelancers make more money, we wanted to help them to capture more margin, and we wanted it to help them figure out how much we should charge for this thing. During this interview, you will learn four things: Not every business is managed equally - and that's a massive opportunity to create durable differentiation. Many SaaS founders become a magnet for competition just by selecting the problem they solve for. How to solidly embed your vision into every decision made inside your SaaS business. Some simple secrets to creating a messaging that resonates For more information about the guest from this week: Rachel Renock Website Wethos Subscribe to the Daily SaaS Reflection Get my free, 1 min daily reflection on shaping a B2B SaaS business no one can ignore. He wound up working there for the next seven years eventually working as a lighting technical director. John's ILM credits include; Speed 2, Twister, Mars Attacks!, Deep Rising, Sleepy Hallow, Mission to Mars, and Star Wars: Episode One - The Phantom Menace (to name just a few). After his first stint at ILM John went to work for a startup called I-Beam with some pals from ILM. They commuted each day from Marin to Palo Alto in a stretch limousine they bought as a group. When the start up went bust, John moved back into visual effects working at Giant Killer Robots, Weta Digital in New Zealand (on Return of the King), at Image Movers Digital, Atomic Fiction, and eventually back for a second stint at ILM for four more years (The Avengers, Star Trek: Into Darkness, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles). Shifting gears John decided to go back to school, moving across the country and enrolling at MIT earning a master's degree in Integrated Design. Today John lives in Boston working full time as the Principal Tech Artist and Developer at PTC. When he's not at work he's an awesome dad to his two kids, coaching little league, soccer, and even hockey. John is an amazing artist and technician. Show Notes and Links to Megan and Jorge Lacera's Work   On Episode 34, Pete is honored to speak with talented writers and artists and creators, Megan and Jorge Lacera. Artist Jorge Lacera was born in Colombia, and grew up in Miami, Florida drawing in sketchbooks, on napkins, on walls, and anywhere his parents would let him. After graduating with honors from Ringling College of Art and Design, Jorge worked as a visual development and concept artist for major gaming studios and entertainment companies. As a big fan of pop culture, comics, and zombie movies, Jorge rarely saw Latinx kids as the heroes or leads. He is committed to changing that, especially now that he has a son.  Jorge is currently helping to create the next chapter in the Bioshock franchise as the Associate Art Director at Cloud Chamber Studios in Montreal, Quebec.                                                                                                                 Writer Megan Lacera grew up in the suburbs of Cleveland, Ohio, with a book always in her hands. She became a writer and creator of characters and worlds for entertainment companies like American Greetings, Hasbro, and Goldieblox and later formed her own creative company where she creates original content and consults on marketing, social media, and strategic direction for start-ups and large corporations. After reading many stories to their son, Megan realized that very few books reflected a family like theirs--multicultural, bilingual, funny, and imperfect. She decided to change that by writing her own stories.      Personal Website Storyline Online Reading of Zombies Don't Eat Veggies!
