Hey there! Have you ever thought about how we discover ourselves through the different voices we try on in life? I'm excited to share an amazing conversation in this episode where we explore exactly that. I sit down with Adrienne Shamszad, a talented musician I got introduced to through my friend Ned Buskirk from You're Going To Die. Adrienne's story is truly inspiring—she found her true voice when she began losing it. That struggle led her on a journey to uncover the ways she'd been silenced, and it changed everything for her. We dive deep into Adrienne's artistic process, how she channels her art, and the mind-body connection in her journey as an artist. But it's more than that; it's about growing up as an artist, finding paths by tapping into something higher, and letting that energy flow through her art. One thing Adrienne said that stuck with me is, "Suffering can sometimes be this incredible portal in life, pushing us toward awakening or awareness." That hit hard, reflecting on how challenges can shape us in unexpected ways. Join us as we uncover Adrienne Shamszad's story—a story of resilience, artistry, and the search for authenticity. We'll explore how she found her voice amid life's hurdles and how her journey might resonate deeply with your own. Come along and let's discover together the transformative power of self-discovery through art and resilience.

Artists work with many different individuals while chasing their dreams, and a producer is one of the most valuable members of the team. I'm delighted to welcome Tyler Spicer onto the show to chat all about the role a producer plays in an artist's journey. The quote for this episode is by Hannes Bieger: “Every track starts with a single, strong idea.” Tyler and I talk about the creativity and imagination required for music production, having a strong idea and clear vision for a song, a producer blending their approach with the artist's vision and preferences, the importance of a producer having an eclectic taste in music, leaning into genre expectations and commercial appeal while also bringing a fresh perspective, the remote production process, having strong communication, making sure the song is going in the right direction, creating a comfortable environment for the artist, the importance of a producer being flexible, taking a unique approach to each artist's music, overcoming challenges, and so much more. It was a joy having Tyler on the show, so I hope our conversation gives you a glimpse into a producer's role. Are you enjoying Write on Track? Do you have a topic suggestion for an episode? In a corner of the chaotic city, Zhang Wei held his most precious saxophone, standing alone on a quiet street corner. Every brick on this street was tempered with his dreams, even in silence, even in hardship. En: Zhang Wei woke up early that day, just to find a resonance of body and mind in the longest dusk on the street. The melodies he played were as melodious as the wind, carrying the clarity and calmness of the morning. They traversed the busy streets, winding through the alleys, impossible to ignore. En: However, the busy crowds of this city seemed to pay no attention to him. They hurriedly walked, their faces cold and indifferent, too preoccupied to listen to the poetry of this street artist. Zhang Wei felt his heart grow heavy, and his saxophone playing gradually lost its strength, becoming just a faint sound traversing the streets and alleys. En: Nevertheless, he persisted, steadfastly playing his saxophone. His melodies hid stories, full of hope and sadness, filled with the bitterness of life and the toughness of life. He knew that his music, like this city and his life, as long as he persevered, would be heard by someone one day. En: Just as he played a more intense melody, a little boy unexpectedly stopped beside him. He listened quietly, his clear eyes full of love for music and curiosity about the world. He had no money, but what he gave Zhang Wei was the sense of recognition he had longed for. En: As night fell, Zhang Wei changed his style of playing. He gently plucked the curved metal body of the saxophone and resonated a solo piece for the little boy. The music flowed through the streets like water, washing away the fatigue of the day, filling the air with warmth and comfort. The little boy looked at Zhang Wei, and in his eyes flashed awe for the music, knowing that it was the most beautiful moment of his life. En: In this bustling city, people hurriedly walked, but only Zhang Wei and the little boy were on the street, enjoying the moment when the night descended and the city lights first lit up, softly reciting the anthem of the city. Finally, the little boy left, but what he left with Zhang Wei was trust, recognition, and the motivation to keep playing. En: Zhang Wei knew that his music, like his life, needed time to mature. Brian Martinson started out as a promising young artist with grants and invitations to galleries, artists colonies, and juried art shows. His secret super power for his creativity was alcohol, on which he became dependent along the way. It was great at first, and then, not so great after a while. So he took a break from creating art for a while, which ended up lasting for 28 years. During his dark night of the soul period, he left alcohol behind, got into therapy, started meditation, healed his inner child, rekindled his connection to Higher Power, and... started creating art again. His secret super power for his creativity these days? You've guessed it right - Meditation! And he is now inspired to share not only his artwork but his journey as well.About Brian:** Mention this podcast and receive a discount on his artwork! **Brian's websiteBrian's IGResources discussed in this episode:Artist, Frank Stella**I am now offering one-on-one coaching!**Submit your application for a 30 min complimentary discovery call here: https://masakozawa.com/coachingWays to connect with me:Let's meditate together on InsightTimer! Why not meditate? “Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.”― C.G. Jung I've spoken here and shared in my book what a powerful tool therapy was for me, especially what Carl Jung called Shadow Work, which Ken Wilber described as shining light into the recesses of our soul. This week I was delighted to have a conversation with Tonje Moe about her experience with a form of art therapy that also helped her dive into her dreams to learn how to use them on her journey. Tonje is an amazing artist from Norway who was named in the prestigious publication 100 Painters of Tomorrow in 2014, and has received numerous grants, awards, and public commissions. She shared a bit of her journey that has taken her from Norway to Scotland, Australia, and back again to her beautiful Norwegian homeland where she lives with her lovely family and creates magical art that is often inspired by her dreams. This is a great episode to learn more about therapy, art therapy, dream analysis, and learning to listen to your dreams. Follow Tonje's journey and see her art on instagram HERE. What if you didn't have to keep everything bottled up? Or show up a certain way? Or deny what you're going through or feeling? What if you could just sit with it, feel it fully, then find a way to not only release it, but turn those feelings, thoughts, and emotions into something that went out into the world and moved people to feel and connect and love and laugh, too? This is the work, the world, and life of New York City designer, illustrator, muralist, and author, Timothy Goodman. Surviving early life trauma, losing himself to drugs, getting arrested, and barely graduating high school, a chance encounter with a boss who'd become a mentor rekindled a passion for art and expression that had been seeded by the example of his grandma decades earlier. He was smitten with design, storytelling, and art and poured himself into it, eventually finding his way to New York City, studying at SVA, and knowing in his bones, this would be his home for life. Over the years, he's built a stunning career. His new book, I Always Think It's Forever: A Love Story Set in Paris as Told by an Unreliable but Earnest Narrator, takes us into his exploration of love, blending poignant stories, insights and awakenings with vibrant joyful illustrations. And his body of work openly explores Timothy's own mental health challenges and concern about the state of the world, sometimes centering both in his work. OPTIMIZE with Brian Johnson | More Wisdom in Less Time

“Shutdown Complete!” for the Target Swipe Win   Steven Pressfield is one of my all-time favorite writers.   In addition to being a brilliant writer of both fiction and non-fiction, he's a good human being. You can feel his wisdom and humility and realness with every word he writes.   We've featured SIX of his brilliant books on the creative process including: The War of Art, Do the Work, Turning Pro, Nobody Wants to Read Your Sh*t, The Artist's Journey and his most recent book: Put Your Ass Where Your Heart Wants to Be.   Check out all those Notes if you want to learn more about how I approach the creative process. You can also check out Creativity 101 and the collection of Notes on the subject.   As you know if you're familiar with Pressfield and his style, his books are both inspiring and beautifully pithy.    btw: I just looked that word up. Yep. His books are the very definition of pithy: “concise and forcefully expressive.” I read his latest book in an hour and fifteen minutes.   Now…   Today I want to connect a Big Idea from his latest book to my #3 Work Target: “Shut-down complete.”   As you know if you've been following along, “Shut-down complete!” is a Cal Newport-inspired idea.    In Deep Work he tells us: “At the end of the workday, shut down your consideration of work issues until the next morning — no after-dinner e-mail check, no mental replays of conversations, and no scheming about how you'll handle an upcoming challenge; shut down work thinking completely. If you need more time, then extend your workday, but once you shut down, your mind must be left free.”   And, he says: “When you work, work hard. When you're done, be done.”   To ritualize this process, as he shuts everything down for the night, he says: “Shut-down complete!”    That's exactly what I do as I shut down for the day and get my desk in a ready state for the next morning. (Which, btw, is ANOTHER one of my Work Targets: “Desk in Ready State.”)   Pressfield captures the same sentiment in his latest book.   He tells us: “When I finish the day's work, I turn my mind off. The office is closed. The work has been handed off to the Unconscious, to the Muse. I respect her. I give her the time. If I see family or friends, I never talk about what I'm working on. I politely deflect any queries. But beyond not talking with others, I refuse to talk to myself. I don't obsess. I don't worry. I don't second guess. The office is closed.”   That's Today's +1.   When you work, WORK.    When you're done with work, BE DONE.   The office is closed.   Turn your brain off as you transition from Work to Love and give yourself the best shot at both enjoying your family AND training your recovery so you can show up with Heroic Energy and do it all again at the highest possible levels tomorrow.   Target swipe: “Shut-down complete!”   Target swipe: “Desk in Ready State”   Target swipe: “LET'S GOOOOO, HERO!!!”

In this episode of The Craft, Carter and Colby discuss the artist's journey in relation to the hero's journey. Their conversation combines Steven Pressfield's The Artist's Journey with Joseph Campbell's theory of the monomyth, which Campbell outlines in his predominant book, The Hero With a Thousand Faces. This juxtaposition considers the comparative mythology of Campbell alongside the potential application of such a theory to creative projects and careers. During the conversation, they consider the necessity of creative descents in producing meaningful work. Additionally, Carter and Colby explore how artists repeatedly oscillate between the abstract and the concrete, using Pressfields' adaption of Nietzsche as a guide.Links mentioned:The Artist's Journey by Steven PressfieldBuilding a Story Brand by Donald MillerAustin Kleon: The Life of a projectThe Hero with a Thousand Faces by Joseph CampbellSend feedback or topic ideas to heycraftpodcast@gmail.com.··Cover art was designed by Elizabeth Newell. Put Your Ass Where Your Heart Wants to Be by Steven Pressfield About the Book: Are you losing your "war of art"? Are you being defeated by a tendency to procrastination, self-doubt, fear, distraction, and perfectionism? Are you self-sabotaging your loftiest artistic entrepreneurial dreams? The antidote is nine words: Put your ass where your heart wants to be. Can you shift your artistic identity—your "ass"—from the shallow, fearful, superficial ego to the wise, loving, fearless self? Can you commit to your dream for the long haul and for keeps? In this book, best-selling author Steven Pressfield delivers the tough-love inspiration to help you make this life-altering transformation. About the Author: Steven Pressfield is the author of The War of Art which has sold over a million copies globally and been translated into multiple languages. "The more important a project is to the evolution of your soul, the more Resistance you'll feel to it."Our guest this week is Steven Pressfield, acclaimed screenplay writer (The Legend of Bagger Vance, among others), bestselling fiction author (A Man at Arms, Gates of Fire) and, as you'll learn, a "servant to the Muse." But he's joining us to discuss his breakthrough efforts to help people walk through their fear to create and deliver their best work.In Part 1 of our two part interview we dig into Steve's ground-breaking book The War of Art to unpack the concept of Resistance--the almost mythical, but very real and pernicious, force that fights our desire to innovate and bring our new ideas to the world. In his trademark engaging and to the point style, Steve lays out how to overcome our self-doubt and self-sabotage to breakthrough ways we get stuck.  But first we give our hot-takes on the latest retail news, including a quick review of what earnings from Gap, Nordstrom, Macy's, and others suggest about the balance of the year. Spoiler alert: lots of markdowns. Bed, Bath & Beyond also announced (yet another) turnaround plan, which is long on cost cutting but falls short on what really ails them. Tobi Ewing is an artist, maker, guide, and so much more. Her work flows between several mediums at the intersection of art, design, and wellbeing, including painting, textile and fiber art, interior design, storytelling, meditation, and body care. Tobi is personally inspired by the possibilities of divine beauty, imagination, and intentional care – and she uses her art to express a desire to rethink the wellness industry. Growing up as the oldest of three, born to teenage parents, she had the unique experience of feeling like she grew up alongside her parents, while also feeling somewhat like a parent to her two younger siblings. Because her parents had her at such a young age, Tobi had to battle the stigma of being labeled as someone destined for failure from the beginning. She didn't let outside voices sway her resolve. She opened her first solo gallery, The Reappearing Dream, in 2021, and is now at the helm of her own boutique contemporary studio, Frances Bernice Design Studio. She's obsessed with the concept of “bringing the gallery home” – how we can interact with contemporary fine art outside of galleries or museums. Her dream is to make art more accessible and believes that exposure to art can change the trajectory of our lives. It's a colorful and inspiring conversation that I hope kickstarts your own creative mind into building, writing, painting – making something unique this week. Well hello again! This episode is a Buy 1 Get 1 free BABY. This week we are diving back into the Quantum Business Book Club with two books by Steven Pressfield. I decided to combine these into the same episode because these books complement each other like yin & yang. The Artist's Journey is the chaotic creative younger sibling to The War of Art's older, capitalist approach to art. I tell everyone in my world to read these two books and to you listening: you're in my world now too. They. Will. Change. Yo. Life. Art is a journey of both the heart and the mind. That's the challenge. The business of art and translating the passion into a financially viable endeavor is the ultimate form of creativity. So, take a listen, support your local bookstore, and get reading. This week I wanted to talk about beginnings and endings. We're programmed to want to stay in the safety of our current experience. But, how are you supposed to get to your next big thing when you're doing the exact same thing over and over? When things start to get funky, then a bit haywire and then it gets ugly that's the universe telling you it's time for something new. Don't wait until it gets ugly. It's time for a leap of faith. Hear all about how they got started, where they are now, and where they're going next.    KEY TAKEAWAYS Everyone's journey is unique. The three hosts all came from different backgrounds and started their artistic journey from different points. They didn't all go straight to art school, instead studying and working in other fields before their passion for illustration drew them in. Art school doesn't have to be the starting point. Dorien applied for art school and a course in scientific drawing but was not accepted. Not every great or successful artist went to art school. There are no set paths to becoming an artist.  We all have different goals, success should be measured against ourselves, not compared to anyone else. Weather your goal is to write a book, launch your own stationary line, or expand your greetings card business to more stores. His debut novel, The Legend of Bagger Vance, was adapted for screen. A film of the same title was released in 2000, directed by Robert Redford and starring Matt Damon, Will Smith and Charlize Theron. His father was in the Navy, and he was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad, in 1943. Since graduating from Duke University in 1965, he has been a U.S. Marine, an advertising copywriter, schoolteacher, tractor-trailer driver, bartender, oilfield roustabout, attendant in a mental hospital and screenwriter. His struggles to earn a living as a writer (it took seventeen years to get the first paycheck) are detailed in The War of Art, Turning Pro, The Authentic Swing, Nobody Wants to Read Your Sh*t, and The Knowledge. There's a recurring character in his books, named Telamon, a mercenary of ancient days. Telamon doesn't say much. He rarely gets hurt or wounded. And he never seems to age. His view of the profession of arms is a lot like Pressfield's conception of art and the artist: "It is one thing to study war, and another to live the warrior's life."

2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution. It took almost a year for 36 states to ratify it into law. But on August 18, 1920, my foresisters woke up with the right to speak their voice into the policies and the people that steer this nation. Finally, they could vote. Marilyn Artus is a visual artist based in Oklahoma, and her work explores the female experience and women's issues. She has created shows that explore the suffragist era in the U.S., pays tribute to an assortment of women in U.S. history and continues to collide the many different stereotypes that women navigate through on a daily basis.
