At the outset, Mohit Tyagi aka Mocid is firmly rooted in the conventions of hard-hitting techno. That even includes the genre's association with retrofuturism and obsession with the extraterrestrial, as he attaches the moniker's artistic vision to that of a "space traveller exploring the Universe, searching for intelligent beings and establishing the first contact with them through rhythmic sound vibrations." A closer listen to his latest release 'Bioterror' unpacks layers more unique to the New Delhi DJ and producer – whether it is the juxtaposition of spacious soundscapes and pulsating low-end on 'Voodoo', the near-descent into noise on 'Poltergeist' and, most notably, the standout title track which lifts off from the genre with the tribal drums and engulfing pads that combine to form a journey that's led by its textures as it is by its dancefloor rhythms. Marking the release with a Wild City mix, Mocid details the influences that inform such qualities with his selection going from multiple tracks by Mekromic, through even Indian talents such as Audio Units before culminating the relentless ride with Matrixmann. English: An auricular confession that asks for a little more from the mature listener: to submit themselves; to be satiated with less; for the musical payoffs may be harder to discern but ultimately more gratifying. A merging framework of fact and fantasy, without artistic compromise while remaining oblivious to the surrounding microcosm. A space-time parabola of shapeshifting rhythms and deep electronic atmospheres created using analog waveforms, dense textures, organic dissonances, and abnormal reverberations leading to an expedition without a beginning or end. The Units are brothers Ashwin and Ashrith who spend their time together visiting the deepest realms of techno huddled over their machines and drawing inspiration from science fiction, spatial geometry, architecture, and nature. Their obsession with electronic sounds goes back to the noise of '80s video games and early introduction to computer programming. Across their discography, their artistic voice is both consistent and sublime, showcasing a unique perspective and technique. With a distinct sound as producers, Audio Units successfully capture and transfer it into their work as DJs. Their performances irradiate with cosmic warmth made possible by a deft, highly technical mixing style taking their audience on a voyage at light speed as a result of an entire lifetime dedicated to electronic music and a deep love of the machines that make it. OUTER DIMENSION PREMIERE 133 Track Title: @elisa-batti - Hymenoptera Album Title: Point Of View Vol. 2 Label: @obsmus Catalogue Number: OM006 Format: Digital Release Date: January 27th, 2021 About the release: The sixth release on Observant adds a set of new but seasoned faces to the roster. The 8 track compilation titled “ Point of View Vol. 2” includes originals by Szmer, Elisa Batti, Dekeyden, Bastian Balders, Dotdat, A Thousand Details, Obstructor and Audio Units. Proud to present these amazing artists who clearly have gone an extra mile to keep things innovative on this compilation. The driving funk of Szmer’s “Tiro”, leading into the deep percussive trip by Balders Audio head honcho Bastian on “Mode_1”, Obstructors’ incessant rhythmic pulsations on “Recession” and dotdat’s “Thirty Seven” with the quirky leads are for the dark rooms for a heads’ down moment. Whilst Dekeyden’s “Effem Clipping” sets the tone for a great intro with its cold drones on a break beat and further meandering into a deeper hypnotic territory with Audio Units’ “Crypt of Decay”. Elisa Batti and A Thousand Details finish off this compilation with their contributions “Hymenoptera” and “Yoshida-San”, both texture laden groove bombs. Sidvicious (New Delhi, India) Siddharth, hailing from New Delhi, leading a dual life as a corporate employee in daytime and as SIDVICIOUS at nights. No wonder his favorite superhero is Batman. His obsession and great taste in sounds lands him to play with other superheroes like Patrice Baumel, Mathame, Konstantin Sibold, Kohra, Brian Cid, Audio Units, Dub Recycle, Jitter and many more.
Bangalore based duo Audio Units showcases a more downtempo, laid back-side to their aesthetic in Wild City Mix #109. Brothers Ashwin Baburao and Ashrith Baburao have been making music together as Audio Units since the early 90s. Ashwin had already established himself as a selector by 2000, playing at large festivals and venues across the country, while Ashrith dived into the self-described ‘geekier’, more technological side of things. Audio Units’ sound traverses a range of styles within experimental, often bass heavy house and techno music tailored to suit the needs of the dance floor. Over the last couple of years, the outfit has managed to release music through labels like Dutchie Music, Deep Edition Recordings, Qilla, Soupherb and many more. Their charismatic live lets are usually brimming with energy, which is why their laid back mix #109 for Wild City came as a bit of a surprise. The brothers forego the music they usually have to play to cater to club audiences for more downtempo, minimal and melodic electronica best heard on headphones. Beginning with some trance courtesy H.U.V.A. network, the selection goes on to exhibit an array of experimental electronic tunes by the likes of Detroit based percussionist Shigeto and British producers Raffertie and Rival Consoles. Big names like Four Tet, Moderat and Com Truise follow in the second half along with Audio Units’ original, stellar tune ‘Grainspace’. New Delhi based Hamza has attained a reputation as a pioneer of the house music scene in India and one of the most innovative and exciting producers nationwide. Pushing a diverse and international sound, he's influenced by his strong musical background as well as growing up in India and traveling the world, living in cities such as Paris, Boston and New York. Hamza combines deep, tribal, and funky sounds with strong world music influences. This is evident when you put your ear to anything coming out on the Wind Horse Records camp - a label he set up back in 2011. From its very first release Wind Horse quickly garnered attention from notable figures such as Dubfire, Peter Kruder (Kruder & Dorfmeister), Richie Hawtin, Quentin Harris, and Tom Findlay (Groove Armada). Hamza also used the label's channels to work with some of the biggest names in world music, including Punjabi vocalist Jasbir Jassi, Tibetan singer-songwriter Yungchen Lhamo, and David Hykes, the only western vocalist specialising in Mongolian chants. After additional EPs and albums from Indian artists like Vipul, Audio Units, Vinayak^A, and international artists Mink and Gion, the label recently celebrated its twentieth release: Hamza’s debut artist album, Gitano. Gitano was a masterpiece. Taking in the sounds of guitars, trumpets, congas and timbales of folk percussion, it instantly turned these ever-recognisable sounds in to club-friendly rollers. Incredibly balanced music, it's held together by tribal percussion that seems to be in a continuous state of forward motion. Yet a straight 4x4 beat holds everything together, a solid kick and clap combo that makes the album compatible with electro and techno. One of those long time coming mixes, #072 in the series is a celebration of this release. Over the course of more than an hour, it shows continual emphasis on synthesised melodies, unobtrusive rhythms, airy vocals and an upbeat tone. Even when he digs deep into his archives, there's something familiar about the music on offer, not to mention a real sense of continuity from one song to the next. Delhi based Qilla Records has fast become one of the country's key underground powerhouses, a name now associated internationally with underground dance music particularly with minimal and techno. Spearheaded by Madhav Shorey a.k.a Kohra and Gaurav Malaker, one half of BLOT, the label is now on the cusp of its 8th release. Unlike its predecessors, this is the first time the imprint has put together a compilation rather than an EP, showcasing a completely new direction for the label. "The idea behind our very first full-length compilation 'Open Dialect' came after we received a large number of demos that were all fantastic tracks but didn't quite fit the "label profile" so to speak. We decided to section out certain styles of tracks into compilations that support parallel ideas of the label presented differently." - Kohra, Qilla Records Due to be released on 21 May, the compilation features tracks from a number of young and upcoming producers from France, Australia, New Zealand, Israel and India. It also welcomes the Qilla debut of Bangalore based artists Vinayaka and Audio Units as well as Delhi based Habilis. We've been trying to pin down Kohra to do a Wild City mix for us, for a while now. The fact that it comes in the form of a promo mix for Open Dialect makes no difference to us. This is a fantastic release from an independent label that continues to that make huge strides in the right but yet unknown direction. This is what excites us. Drawing exclusively from tracks that feature on the compilation, Kohra has put together a mix that folds together deep rolling basslines and uplifting melodies with a dark hypnotic brooding undercurrent. A taste of what to expect from the release next week. "Qilla Records chooses to support the new breed of producers who aren't afraid to go back to their roots to understand the future of dance music. It isn't about genres anymore. Genres have cross-pollinated enough to create sound that is evocative of emotive nuances which break free from any form of categorisation. 'Open Dialect' was created to explore this state of mind."
