Tycho is Scott Hansen and Scott is a deeply friendly and humble chap. I didnt know too much about his background or what made him tick but I tried to get to “know” him and makes some guesses about that by tuning into his music. It's clearly so well crafted and put together with meticulous attention to detail that this man had to be fastidious but how would that quality manifest? He manages to ride us on a carpet of textures which guide the process of musical flight, once a mood is found, it's held with patience so the listen can dwell in a land. It's a style that has been really honed and has found a large following for good reason! It was a real treat to get on the ramble road with him. I left the interview unedited for maximum deviation potential (you're welcome) _____ This episode is sponsored by A tasty pixel and their excellent LOOPY PRO! As many of you are aware, I've spent years of my life with loopers of all kinds from the crudest guitar pedals to my own Max/MSP effort in 2000 to Tim Exile's wonderful “flow machine” Making a looper setup that fits your style is everything and to do that, a tool that is very flexible and open to configuration is needed. I'm happy to report that this is perfected inside loopy pro. I'm also happy to say that It's one of the best loopers I've ever used and has become the heart of beardymans new setup so you know it's capable. Needless to say Im really happy to be working with A tasty pixel. _______ I made a new video to highlight a specific use of Loopy Pro that came to me one evening. There's plenty of excellent tutorial videos to get started online so I wanted to show something a little unique. I took 4 instances of the Chamberlin M1 samplepack I made (which is now available at decentsamples.com!) fed each to an array of 4 speakers around a Neumann head for some quadra funky tape loopidelic delightfulness. Yes, it's A little nitty basically :) Watch HERE!!

Tim Exile has been involved in the Music Tech world for a long time. As the developer of a number of effects and instruments for Native Instruments (including Flesh - https://www.native-instruments.com/en/products/komplete/synths/flesh/ and The Finger - https://www.native-instruments.com/en/products/komplete/effects/the-finger/), he became well-known for pushing the envelope on what we considered to be ‘normal' devices. And after some great videos, we also saw his Flow Machine in action, where he took live looping in a completely new and interesting directions. Now he is working on a platform, called Endlesss (https://endlesss.fm/) that brings all of this together. It combines some of the interesting interfaces of his NI work together with the depth of live performance tools that were part of the Flow Machine, and has developed a live, flexible and collaborative system for recording. To consider this a DAW would be a mistake – rather, it is more like an alternative to the DAW that helps you work ‘in the moment'. In our discussion, we cover everything from his background (including a little more detail than you normally hear…), to his growth in Reaktor-based development, and on to his efforts to bring Endlesss into being. Along the way, we also learn a lot about Tim's interests in embodied performance, and collaboration, and human interaction. Very interesting – and very inspirational. You can learn more about Tim's work at the above links, or through his personal portal at http://timexile.com/. Enjoy! This is so good it just needed it's own episode. It's a groundbreaking, unique new way to make music online - and everyone should try it out ! It's not just bleeps and beats, either - there are plenty of people using it to make fantastic acoustic and sample-based live-looping music as well. I'm talking about Endlesss, the new live-looping-jam-with-friends-online iOS app developed by musician Tim Exile that I mentioned at the end of the last episode - and now it's going to be available on Mac & PC ! I loved chatting to Tim for this episode, and there's a ton of interesting ideas here even if you're not that interested in the idea of Endlesss. We talk about: * The problem of perfectionism in music production, and why it's a mastering engineer's super-power * The best way to develop a new musical instrument * How to fit 40kg of music tech in an iPhone - and why it's worth it * How not-live can feel live and how THAT can overcome anxiety and imposter syndrome * And how Endlesss got Ian back into creating music after a 20-year break as a result Full show notes on our website http://themasteringshow.com/episode-72

There is a new generation of apps and platforms for listeners to become musicians and many of them allow you to collaborate remotely. What will make them reach the next level? A worldwide quarantine! Sounds like a perfect time to launch an app, right? Tim Exile — electronic artist turned tech founder — rocks out some tunes on this episode, jamming across oceans, while he explains to podcast host Dmitri Vietze just how looped collaboration sidesteps the latency challenge of working across the planet. He tells how users from four countries formed a band and even though they have never met in person are about to release a new record. He describes how artist Flux Pavilion is sharing an Endlesss track a day for the month of March. And he says that while some people are wasting away their lives playing Candy Crush, others are obsessively making music for the first time on Endlesss. The soundtrack in this week's episode is called One Night In Africa. It’s a really chilled and lofi electronic deep house music track in the style of Black Coffee or Bonobo, with a few African twists. The instrumentation includes a dance beat, heavy percussion and African drums and the unique sound of Tim Exile’s Flesh by Native Instruments. It often gets used as a soundtrack to accompany timelapse video imagery of landscapes and the night sky. It’s suitable as an intro theme tune for podcasts about electronic music production, coding, and as a soundtrack for fictional stories set in cities in the 2010s.IN THIS EPISODE * Deep house is way more lofi than EDM and requires a darker tone when EQing * Hand claps and West African drums accompany deep house house beats very well * Some big South African deep house DJs: Godfathers of Deep House, Black Coffee, Da Capo * Using a 9-bar phrase (instead of the usual 8/16-bar phrases) creates more variety and listenabilityDOWNLOAD THIS TRACK * Download https://gumroad.com/l/XNZMG * Use this music in your podcast, audio drama or (non-commercial) video * Quick search my entire library of soundtracks by keyword at https://johnbartmann.com/musicSOUNDS & DEVICES USED * Internal white noise from my sound card * Ice water being sloshed around and sampled * Flesh https://www.native-instruments.com/en/products/komplete/synths/flesh/ * West Africa Discovery Series https://www.native-instruments.com/en/products/komplete/world/west-africa/ * Ableton Collision ‘Beautiful Deep House Keys’ patch (free DL https://gum.co/KLNkN)ABOUT THIS SHOW How I Make Music is a show for music producers, podcasters and storytellers to better understand how digital-era composers make their music. Hey, I'm John Bartmann and I’m from Cape Town, South Africa. I write music and offer my own perspective on how to make it. My soundtracks, moods and themes have been used in commercial film, TV and radio, and also in plenty of non-commercial videos, podcasts and audio dramas. Each week, I write, record and release a new soundtrack. In this podcast, I deconstruct these original soundtracks one by one, sharing the separate musical parts, decisions and stories behind how each complete tune was made. Why? To help you better understand how to make, select and use production music that grips your audience.SUBSCRIBE Spotify Apple Podcasts YouTube RSS Stitcher TuneInCONTACT https://twitter.com/johnisthemusic https://johnbartmann.com/contact
Tim Exile met up with us in Cannes to chat about Endlesss, a virtual place where you can make and share music in the moment, solo or with friends. Tim’s goal is to make music part of the short-form collaborative revolution, the way SnapChat, Twitter and Instagram have changed video, writing, and photography. Endlesss is a finalist at Midemlab, the annual pitch competition launched the likes of SoundCloud, KickStarter, Soundcharts, and The Echo Nest. Get to know the startups at this year’s Midemlab competition before they break out! Stay tuned for more of our #MidemTectonics coverage. Want to get into Endless? Here's the link to the HOWA jam http://bit.ly/HOWAjam I met Tim Shaw aka Tim Exile in Berlin in the mid 2000s We were 2 brits roasting in the furnace of creativity that was cooking in the East It was a heady time. There were so many amazing performers around Everyone from Peaches to Kevin Blechdom, Errorsmith to Neubauten You could inhale the punk as a gas and it fueled a lot of invention at that time Tech was on that more steady and tangible bubble up and we were all trying to see how to combine our strengths with that digital promise. Around 2000 I had decided to drop out of music making to be a builder of machines. I got completely taken by the promise of Max/Msp and indeed it allowed me a great freedom to combine my voice and my obsession with the machine in a new way I was making a living looping and Tim caught wind of those early shows and it set him off on a journey to build an absolute BEAST of a looper I had travelled the Max way, Tim took the Reaktor to the loop limit. His flow machine was a joy to behold even in its infancy. I remember hearing it and being completely blown away Seem-less transitions and audio with no clicks! All things my machine struggled with. Loops with various lengths all playing off against one another, FX that would cut and carve the shit into shreds only to have new layers swoop in to fill the void and uncover new counterpoints. The Tempo could change. The Machine would time stretch and warp so beautifully. It was a marvel. The ultimate looper. It's still is the best I've ever used and for a long time it wasn't available to the public. That is until ENDLESS I'm super proud of him for daring to explode this idea into the world as something more than an esoteric loop maker for just one user. He's had to quit his career as a musician essentially to focus on the company and now it's happening. Endless is beginning. Exciting times and I'm very happy to have known the evolution of all this. I see how far it can go coz I know how far the looper has already taken me. Wild rides to get this far and more to come. Please welcome the marvelous mind that is Tim Exile to the show to share his thoughts! ___________________ MUSIC for 44 comes from - The Great Turtle https://greatturtle.bandcamp.com Michael Sayer sent me a lovely mail about this improved music and how it's born of an obsession with music making. How cool is this ? Music made at the Birds of Prey Conservation Area in Idaho. Check it out ___________________ Sponsorship for the show comes courtesy of the wondrous digital minds at Valhalla DSP! I'm thrilled to be able to have them on board as I'm such a fan of all their stuff and the JSUT released the new DELAY plugin The best $50 you'll spend on a delay, lemme tell ya! Get out and get it! Speaking of which, thanks to Devon Gilfillian The song we wrote together called “Get out and Get it”is out now as a single for him on Capitol Records! Badass! Listen here https://devongilfillian.lnk.to/ListenWE I use snips of the original demo vocal in the nitty gritty to show off the wobbly world of dual Melodyne Why not! More wobbles in 2019!!! Cheers
Recorded live on the 15th of Jan at the Hoxton Bar & Kitchen in London.

We start with a look at the DBX GoRack, a portable PA enhancing solution, then Tim Exile's Reaktor 6 based instrument Flesh, the panel disclose a few of their favourite utilities, the Mandala V3 drum pad system, and Markus Fuller's Boutique JP-08 teardown.
Vittoria Fleet is a Berlin-based duo of Allan Shotter and Giada Zerbo. First appearing on Headphone Commute pages with their self-released Kissing Cousins EP back in 2012, the project got picked up by the beloved n5MD label, releasing Acht LP in 2014 and most recently, just this past October, Greed LP. Describing their music, I've often compared the project to output by Clark, Tim Exile, Apparat and even Björk - somewhat dark, punctuated, and glitchy while being warm and soft at the very same time. For this Headphone Commute Mix (the very first mix they have ever created) Vittoria Fleet showcases the darker side of their influences. Inverted Audio have partnered with Krake to present a series of live sets that were recorded last year at Krake Festival. Perc aka Alistair Wells, DJ, producer and label owner of Perc Trax begins the series with an extremely rare live ambient set. He performed this at Berghain Kantine after Dadub's performance. The recording contains new tracks and remixes of older tracks by Perc. "Some tracks were purely elements in my laptop and others were a mixture of laptop audio and live improvised electronics." In the interview we discuss Perc's involvement and experience of Krake Festival and how his own record label Perc Trax is progressing.
