On this episode of Friendly Potential Radio, we hear from two pillars of the Aotearoa underground - Keepsakes and Ebb. Keepsakes's hard-edged and spirited music has been released on a hit-list of labels, including South London Analogue Material, Perc Trax, Mord Records, and Mindcut Music. He also runs HAVEN INTL, a club series and vinyl-focused record label that has released work from artists including VTSS, Tommy Holohan, Peder Mannerfelt, Ayarcana, Ansome, and Ryan James Ford. Ebb's releases for 1985 Music, Cutcross, Raw Basics, Subtle Recordings, and Par Avion showcase dark, menacing atmospheres, powerful sub work, fluid, impactful drums and otherworldly sonics. The Ōtautahi based artists are going head-to-head on the Saturday of Beacon Festival in March. We welcome DJ Tool, Hyperaktivist and Nayme who together form the Berlinbased collective Mala Junta. Offering an escape and a safe bonding place for the German capital's queer scene, the group highlight the values of inclusivity, support, friendship and community, and feature a diverse music mix of the faster, funkier, grooving old school techno, effortlessly blended with psychedelic trance and breaks. Their ideals for family and community are further instilled by their strict limited capacity events, making Mala Junta one of Berlin’s best kept rave secrets. In this chat with Nayme, Ana Laura (Hyperaktivist) and Jo-Jo (DJ TOOL) we found out how the three bonded together and became friends well beyond the dancefloor and the events they have been organizing. We explore what it takes to embody and support diversity and inclusion and how dealing with challenging situations is an opportunity to lead by example. We address why we should all be talking openly about hard problems, and - between a few wine glasses and a laugh - we remind ourselves that there is something we all need now more than ever: more humanity, music and connection with each other. Christoph Heinze, better known as Inhalt der Nacht joins us for our next exclusive Home of Sound podcast. Berlin-born, his sound has been shaped by influences from cold wave and new wave, blended seamlessly with elements of the rock music that he was exposed to in his younger days. Having already established his name as one of the most progressive DJ’s in his genre, Christoph has pioneered his own label: Lebendig from which he pushes fellow Dj’s and artists’ productions alongside his own. 2019 saw Christoph’s track “Dosis'' spread through the underground scene of Berlin like wildfire after it appeared on the compilation album “The World of Monom Black” put out by the illustrious Dax J and his eponymous label . Christoph’s eminence nowadays has granted him residency to some of the biggest clubs across Germany including Griessmühle Berlin, Khidi Tbilisi and Rote Sonne Munich In this chat Christoph talks us through his experiences playing and producing techno and also his experimental explorations with theatre scoring in Cuba and eventually in Germany. We delve into Christoph’s past, recounting his first experiences with the underground scene as well the music that influenced him and provided the foundations to his raw and unbound resonate that we know today. We also look at labels and how artists are nurtured around them, and we get first hand insight into how he became resident of Rote Sonne, Griessemhule and Khidi and get a sense of the ever evolving drive of this artist toward fresh and non conventional sounds. Electric Indigo is a longstanding DJ, producer, composer and musician who started her path into the electronic scene in the early 90s and has since played in over 40 countries around the world. Aside from a long string of releases and gigs under her belt, Electric Indigo is also the founder of female:pressure, an international support network and online database for female, non-binary and non conforming gender artists. Her music and contribution has earned her wide and deep respect from the international music scene that has taken her to play in a long list of well established clubs as well as winning awards such as the “outstanding artist award Musik 2012” and the Kunstpreis Musik 2020 from The Republic of Austria. In this chat, we discover the artists early entry point into the techno scene, as she fortuitously interviewed Underground Resistance members, her work at iconic vinyl store Hardwax in Berlin in the early 90s and her experience running a label and playing throughout three decades. We also find out more about female:pressure and their research project “FACTS survey” which quantifies gender composition of music festivals and events line-ups since 2012. We discuss about the many challenges that non-male, non-white artists may face when working in the music industry, and we leave inspired by Electric Indigo’s take on tackling these challenges with open communication and joint committment with artists, promoters and music lovers. We also hear of Alberto’s story and progress from the early days right to the lockdown obstacles, how he met and befriended Lorenzo Senni and Mino Luchena, and insight into his way of living the music he loves. Danniel Odell was born in Medellín, Colombia, with a unique curiosity about music, as a child, his family showed him many Latin rhythms, since then he decided to make music part of his life. He had never seen a DJ in his life before, but he started listening to techno on the radio, remember that he used to listen to Mauro Picotto, Danilo Vigorito, Joy Kitikonti ... among others. From that moment he fell in love with music, began to investigate, where it came from, who produces this type of music and at that moment he knew what a DJ can do, and that was it, he realized that he wanted to be a DJ for the rest of his life He used to play music for his family, put on headphones and started playing for his family, he only laughed when he remembered those days. He officially begins his career in 2005 when he starts playing in small clubs and in some friends bars, private parties ... In 2006 he met one of his best friends and colleague TacoMan, he was one of his motivators to continue pursuing his dream. They start playing in big local clubs like La Kasa, Carnival, Elektra, Oceania, among others. After that, he began to meet new DJS and artists of the scene like John Aquaviva, in mid-2010 he released his record label called STEAM CIRCUIT, 2012 he got his first concert outside of Colombia, landed in Chile. His tour of Chile was with his friend Deraout, they played in cities like Antofagasta, then in some clubs in Santiago and in one of the best radios in Cigarra.FM. He has shared a stand with SuperFlu, Aldo Foshino, Rodrigo Valvidia, Rodriguez JR, Perc, Ansome, Tripeo, ... and many more. His most recent project is a sample of his record label "Raven Black" in some clubs in the city. Video : https://youtu.be/JO6KnKtYdqQ Follow and support @opakdj Interview : Virtual Underground: How has this Opäk story started ? Opäk : I made acoustic music since was young. I play drums and I did a conservatory before starting to play blues / rock / punk with my friends! Then when I went to university, these projects ended, we were all in different cities. I made new friends, all techno fan. I did my first techno nights.... During one, when i was in party in front of "I hate models" at his beginnings, I knew that this was somehow the new essence of punk. So after started with playing with my first little pioneer mixing table and a computer, the Opäk project was born. Virtual Underground : Where do you draw your inspiration from ? Opäk : I find my inspiration in all the music that has nourished me from my childhood to here. From rock to metal, from blues to stoner, from EBM to Techno, from Techno to Acid, from industrial to hardcore. I often define myself as a "Industrial Techno " artist but in the end, I think the richness is to open up my influences as much as possible! if I have to name names that I have listened to a lot I will say The Doors, Rage Against The Machine, Official Motörhead, The Rolling Stones, Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson then in techno I Hate Models, RVDE, Gijensu, Ancient Methods, Phase Fatale, Tommy Four Seven, Ansome, Ayarcana, Myler, TWAN and many other artists in the same genre. Virtual Underground : Could you describe your mixing process ? Opäk : For me the role of the DJ is like that of the sculptor, he must shape the atmosphere and take people on his journey. As a story it is important to have a beginning, a middle and a logical end, so the selection is made in such a way as to respect this narrative scheme! Then of course the best is to perceive only slightly the transitions between the tracks and that they bring a new breath to the set. Virtual Underground : Which software/hardware did you use for this set ? Opäk : I used CDJs and a DJM900 and then I equalized the mix on bleachton so that the audio quality and the feeling was pleasant, simply ahaha Virtual Underground : What are your next plans ? Opäk : What I prefer for the moment is the "show and concert" part I like to perform in search of people, their opinions, emotions. This is the area where I am most comfortable and very beautiful dates like the pulse festival, Entente nocturne arrive. I also created my own label: Askorn Records, which I intend to develop, and finally I am working hard to improve and work to release my first EP which should arrive in 2020.

Podcast #53 - WNDRLST (@wndrlstt) [NL] Interview with WNDRLST: Virtual Underground: How have you discovered Techno music? WNDRLST: I think I'm going to give a very common answer and say that one of my friends dragged me into it about 3 years ago (and still super glad he did today). I've always been interested in Electronic music but eventually got convinced to attend a techno festival in summer 2015 and pretty much fell in love with it since then. It wasn't a hard techno party but it didn't take me long to attend the more darker scene too which definitely is the scene I love the most. I've been DJ'ing and producing as a hobby for roughly 10 years now (on and off) and eventually started messing around creating my first techno loops. After 2 years of experimenting trying to create my own sounds I finally found the confidence to release tracks and sets as I am a perfectionist kind of guy and wish to show nothing less than the best I can possibly deliver. VU: What motivates you to do your music? WNDRLST: The strive to learn to create new sounds every time I open my producing software. I've definitely got artists that inspire me and as much as I love their sound I do want to develop my own style and have people recognise it eventually and sort of ‘claim' my own role in the scene. As of currently I am definitely more confident with producing than I am with DJ'ing so I suppose the ultimate motivation at this point would be to have one of my tracks played by a big artist on some massive event/gig. VU Any artists that inspire your work? WNDRLST: Rebekah, Paula Temple, Dax J, Ansome, Perc, Ghost in the Machine - there are too many to list here, as long as its dark and industrial I'll find bits and pieces in their tracks that draw my attention. VU: How do you find your tracks? WNDRLST: Some of my friends DJ/Produce, we share tracks quite often and if not that, I'd plan in an evening to browse Soundcloud and usually end up with a good tracklist by the end of the evening. VU: What software/hardware do you use? WNDRLST: Currently FL Studio 20 - picking up my first hardware piece soon, so after that a mixture of Ableton Live/FL Studio. VU: Anything to add? WNDRLST:Firstly, thanks for the opportunity and a thank you to whoever have listened to the mix - greatly appreciated. I've also just released my first EP named “Path of Destruction” including 4 dark techno tracks which you'll be able to find on my Soundcloud profile. Currently no gigs planned although I am attending a couple of competitions which could potentially lead to claiming a spot in a line-up somewhere, therefore I would like to ask for any of you to give me a follow or drop me some feedback in general - constantly willing to improve. Thanks WNDRLST for this amazing set! #Industrial #Techno #Podcast #Underground

Since the turn of the millennium, UK artist Alistair Wells has been putting out a tough and abrasive brand of experimental techno that cannot fail to arrest your attention. Always skewing existing ideas into his own new—often brutalist—ways of thinking, his output has seen him become an in demand live act and DJ who plays across three decks all over the world. He does so under the alias Perc, mostly on his own label Perc Trax, and at the same time he has also brought on a number of likeminded artists from Ansome to Manni Dee. His own catalogue boasts albums like Wicker & Steel and The Power And The Glory, and these have rightfully won him deserved time in the limelight. That fact proves that although Wells has been around for years, he is as vital now as ever. As such he brings something new to our mix series across an hour of lively selections. Very quickly settling into a high tempo, high impact groove, there are maximalist techno cuts, passages of angst ridden noise and thumping bangers all bolted together into something uncompromisingly physical and in your face. Franky, it’s a vital visceral offering that would work at any point in the past, present or future of techno.
