This month, we're diving into the 2001 BBC Books Eighth Doctor novel, Father Time. Following on from our recent synopsis episode, this is the main event: a full discussion of the novel—what works, what doesn't, and how it fits into the broader Eighth Doctor era. We also explore the plot, the tone, and some standout characters, including the Doctor's daughter, Miranda! Before all that, we kick things off with the usual mix of news and short topics you've come to expect. Then, after the book chat, we open the mailbag for a bumper listener feedback section—nearly 25 minutes of your thoughts, theories, and reactions. Our listeners are the best. And if you enjoy our musical moments, don't skip the end! Inspired by some of that listener feedback, we play a very special song after the closing credits—one that was nearly lost to time after its chance to appear in a recent episode of Gin & TARDIS came and went. Rick Stein is one of Britain's best-loved chefs. He's also a highly successful businessman, restaurateur, writer and TV presenter, who has single-handedly put Padstow on the map. HIs warm, down-to-earth manner and infectious curiosity about food have made him a star. What you may not know is that, surprise surprise, he and Gyles know each other - they were actually at Oxford University together in the 60s. But Rick's route to Oxford was highly unconventional, and in this conversation he tells Gyles about his lack of academic success, the death of his father, his two years spent travelling and "running away to sea" and his eventual return to university and subsequent start in the restaurant trade. Rick's new book, Rick Stein's Food Stories, is out now, published by BBC Books. It's inspired by Rick's travels around the UK and is a very nice Christmas present! Thanks to the lovely folk at BBC Books we were lucky to get our hands on a MASSIVE haul of brand new Doctor Who Target books AND the debut novel by Bonnie Langford: Death in the Stars.Geoff was busy on Horsham Film Festival duties but Paul decided to take Bonnie's book away with him on holiday so he could read it on the beach. Which he did!As anyone who's listened to us before will know, Paul is very particular with his books, and arguably way too obsessed with 'science' for a show which features a magic police box and aliens who can regularly change their form when they get killed. However, he is a massive fan of Target novels - often dropping into misty-eyed nostalgia as soon as anyone mentions "The Auton Invasion" or "Doctor Who and the Loch Ness Monster". So what did he think of this brand new original novel written by Bonnie who played the novel's main character, ex Doctor Who companion of the 1980s (recently returned to New-Who) Ms Melanie Bush?Has Paul fully exorcised his demons since first watching Terror of the Vervoids? What did he think of Mel and Glitz's relationship? What does Lord of the Flies have to do with any of this?Is there any 'hard science' among the shenanigans of Death in the Stars to keep him happy? And how many cups of tea out of five has he awarded the book?Listen up to find out the answers to all these questions and more!Send us a text and let us know what you think of our podcast!Support the show Subscribe to Who Corner to Corner on your podcast app to make sure you don't miss an episode! David Bowie had a unique relationship with the BBC, making more appearances on 'the beeb' than any other broadcaster throughout his career. An anonymous pre-fame teenager, a blossoming starlet, a white-hot rock star and a veritable elder statesman of pop: the BBC had the inside scoop on it all. In this fascinating collection of BBC television and radio transcripts, Bowie's life story is told in his own words, across more than 35 appearances spanning over forty years. Each provides an illuminating snapshot of moments in a remarkable career. But read together, they offer a completely new take on Bowie himself, a first-person look at the rise and rise of a star. Before our fifth season kicks off, looking at Phase One of the EDA (we like that phrase - we'll have to use it more in future), we present an overview of the BBC Books series, as not all of our listeners will be aware of the ins and outs of the ongoing adventures. In September 2003, Panini published the fifth of their Doctor Who Magazine specials, The Complete Eighth Doctor, which looked at the Wilderness Years, the making of the TV Movie, and looks at this incarnation in audio, comics and books. The feature on the books was written by friend of the podcast Matt Michael, and only featured the novels up to Reckless Engineering, with a further 10 to follow before the range came to an end, so the feature is not fully complete. In it, Matt considered the highs and lows of the Doctor's novel outings, and to set the scene for the next 18 episodes, we present the feature, Hallo Spaceboy, read by its author.

This week we are travelling back to the ninth century to witness one of the major turning points in English history. Winston Churchill regularly tops ‘the greatest Briton of all time' charts, but his own vote for this accolade apparently went to the man we are going to discuss today. Alfred 'the Great' is the only English monarch to enjoy such an admiring epithet, his brother Athelstan is remembered as ‘the Unready' (although this meant poorly advised rather than unprepared), William I is either ‘the conqueror' or ‘the bastard' depending on your point of view – no other monarch's reputation has survived with a rosy glow. Our time travel today in the company of the world-renowned historian Michael Wood reveals exactly why Alfred is so well thought of. He takes us back to 878, a pivotal year in our history when, against all the odds, the Viking invaders were defeated, pushed out of Alfred's kingdom of Wessex and the geopolitics were set for the following centuries. Michael Wood's In Search of the Dark Ages: a History of Anglo-Saxon England 40th anniversary edition, is newly published by BBC Books. Scene Two: 9th May, the Battle of Edington, Alfred defeats the Viking forces against all odds. Scene Three: 26th June Treaty at Wedmore which changed the course of the Viking wars and resulted in their leader, Guthrum converting to Christianity with Alfred as his godfather. A BBC Books of 2022 pick. An exquisite debut novel. A mid-life coming-of-age story charting one man's sexual awakening and his spectacular fall from grace in 1990s London, raising questions about art and beauty, sex and censure. Ben turns and grins ironically. 'When you stopped just now and looked at the sky, you weren't measuring it. You weren't thinking about classical proportion. You were feeling something.' Cambridge, 1994. Professor Don Lamb is a revered art historian at the height of his powers, consumed by the book he is writing about the skies of the Venetian master Tiepolo. However, his academic brilliance belies a deep inexperience of life and love. When an explosive piece of contemporary art is installed on the lawn of his college, it sets in motion Don's abrupt departure from Cambridge to take up a role at a south London museum. There he befriends Ben, a young artist who draws him into the anarchic 1990s British art scene and the nightlife of Soho. Over the course of one long, hot summer, Don glimpses a liberating new existence. But his epiphany is also a moment of self-reckoning, as his oldest friendship - and his own unexamined past - are revealed to him in a devastating new light. As Don's life unravels, he suffers a fall from grace that that shatters his world into pieces.
