The art of ploughing the land and keeping a straight furrow has been a way of life in the British Isles for thousands of years, so much so that ploughing terms have become embedded in our language and culture; from pub names and church hymns to popular songs and the humble ploughman's lunch. While phrases such as ‘ploughing on' and someone ‘ploughing a lonely furrow' are second nature. Vernon Harwood visits the British National Ploughing Championships near Taunton to meet the people with a passion for ploughs and ploughing to discover why the task of turning the soil holds such a fascination. Along the way he meets the man who cares for a priceless collection of Victorian ploughs in Berkshire, a famous cheese-maker with a prized Gloucestershire Long Plough, a celebrated folk singer keeping forgotten plough songs alive and comes nose-to-muzzle with Sam and Tilly, the last working plough horses in Somerset. As a new King is crowned, Vernon Harwood looks at the role Charles III has played in shaping and supporting farming in the UK. From his first major speech on the environment as a young Prince of Wales in 1970, to his unconventional and often criticised organic farming methods in the 1980s, he continues to be concerned about the future for upland farmers and the profitability of small family businesses. We hear insights from the King's former Farm Manager in Gloucestershire, the Cumberland Bed-and-Breakfast owners who formed a lasting friendship with the monarch and the fifth-generation Exmoor farmer who sees first-hand the impact the Prince's Countryside Fund has on isolated communities. For decades Charles was a passionate and sometimes forthright voice supporting everything from traditional country crafts to Britain's native farm breeds. But with new responsibilities as sovereign, what now for the man dubbed ‘Britain's most famous farmer'? 12 billion miles from Earth: Fun Kids Mission Transmission sends a message to the stars

If you enjoy this podcast, consider buying me a coffee: https://adamstoner.com/support Yesterday, I sent a message to space. By the time you read this, the transmission will be 12 billion miles from Earth, 7 times farther away than Neptune. Photons from the broadcast will continue to move at light speed through the universe until the universe itself dies, trillions of trillions of years from now. The broadcast was sent into space from an array of transmitters all over the world and the UK's children's radio station Fun Kids simulcast the transmission, setting a world-first Guinness World Record in the process: the first radio programme beamed to deep space. We called the project Mission Transmission. The result was almost thirty minutes of audio featuring children's hopes, aspirations and questions to extraterrestrial life. Thousands of children from all around the world entered and hundreds made it into our programme. Tens of thousands of people visited the Fun Kids website during the six weeks submissions were open and hundreds from press and PR to astronomers and astrophysicists were involved in bringing this thing to life. Yesterday morning, Mission Transmission was on BBC Radio Sussex, BBC CWR, BBC Radio Gloucestershire, BBC Radio 2, and BBC Radio 4's Today programme. In the evening I was on BBC Points West. Tonight, you'll see some of the event on The One Show. Tomorrow, an interview I did with the Radio Academy has a rundown of exactly what happened too. At 7pm last night, astronaut Tim Peake, KIDZ BOP and a bunch of children who're featured in our programme all hit a big red button at the Royal Observatory Greenwich. At that moment, transmitters across the world streamed our radio programme to the stars and started it on a journey that will never end. It was a literal love letter to the universe and has been a personal labour of love for so much longer. In fact, this entire project has given me an incredible sense of wellbeing, reminding me that the things that unite us far outnumber things that divide us. So, the next time you gaze up at the stars and picture the wonders of the universe or life on some far-flung and as-of-yet undiscovered planet, remember that among all those twinkling stars exists a tiny token from home, and that wrapped up in that signal are some of the things that make us, us: our sounds, our people, our science, and music. You'll next hear from me on March 31st 2022.

If you enjoy this podcast, consider buying me a coffee: https://adamstoner.com/support 2022 started in the best possible way. Four days into the new year, I launched Mission Transmission on the UK's children's radio station, Fun Kids; our record-breaking, history-making project to send the voices of our listeners to deep space. Mission Transmission got some nice tweets, was on the front page of Express.co.uk, on RadioToday, in the Week Junior magazine, First News, and Science+Nature too. There's an entire episode of Mysteries of Science dedicated to it – that one's called How to Talk to Aliens. The Radio Academy interviewed me – that's forming part of a new podcast they've got coming out this coming month – and I was on BBC Radio Gloucestershire. My university also spoke to me about the behind-the-scenes work that goes into something like this. By far the most rewarding thing this month has been hearing literally hundreds of voices sent in around-the-clock from kids across the world who want to be a part of our broadcast. I feel so grateful to share this experience with them and know that if I were twenty years younger, I'd be submitting my own voice too. This is the biggest thing I've ever done. It's filled with prestigious people and places; the Royal Observatory Greenwich, Guinness World Records, KIDZ BOP creating a song for us, covering two of the biggest bands in the world, BTS and Coldplay. The 1975 are letting us use their song featuring Greta Thunberg and there's loads more up our sleeve. 214 email chains (some 40 messages deep), 24 hours of submitted audio, 12 interviews with space experts around the world including Jon Lomberg, creator of the Voyager Golden Record, and over 120 other people have been involved in making this thing a reality. Soon, we'll reach a point where the radio programme is finished. All it takes is the click of a button to stream it to 10,000 of Earth's closest stars and start it on a journey that will last forever. Honestly, most of my time this month has been spent between audio editing software and in conversation with those who are making this thing a reality. That said, here's a quick list of what else I've been up to… The path of the sun over six months is what you see in the image above, a result of a long-term analogue photography experiment with Sam from Solarcan. Hear Sam in my podcast and more in Activity Quest. My article on the mystery of the megalodon shark – a prehistoric beast, the largest fish to ever exist – is within the pages of Science+Nature on newsstands right now. It's right alongside Mission Transmission. I've been reading The Vinyl Frontier: The Story of NASA's Interstellar Mixtape. I've also been reading A Walk From The Wild Edge too. Speaking of wild, I got a bunch of plants from Patch and my home now looks like a jungle. The 1.5 meter high Fidel (a Fiddel Leaf tree) and 1 meter high Sarah (a Laurel Fig) are stand-out purchases. Alongside loads of kids audio, in terms of what I've been listening to, The Wombat's new album – Fix Yourself, Not The World – is great as is HRVY's new EP, Views from the 23rd Floor. I think there's a valuable lesson to be learned around the #cancelspotify drama. I'm not a Spotify user and I don't like Joe Rogan's podcast but if you're going to take on the world's top streaming platform hosting the world's top podcaster, you really need to come with more in your arsenal than ‘I don't like what they're saying'. Every public failure harms your chance of future success. On TV, Ant and Dec's new gameshow Limitless Win is fun. On Netflix, Snowpiercer is back. Designated Survivor is a bingeable watch, as is trash telly US sitcom Superstore. There's still time to get your voice into space at FunKidsLive.com

This week, Lucinda talks to HR advocate and co-founder of HR Independents, Ruth Cornish, about the challenges that HR professionals face when it comes to disciplinary hearings, and how to ensure that we remain compliant at all times in order to secure fair and balanced outcomes. Key Takeaways Always follow ACAS's guidelines whenever organisations do not have their own set structures and rulebooks, when it comes to disciplinaries. Always make sure that all parties are aware of the disciplinary policies in place. Clarify any facts or assumptions up front. If necessary, talk to the lead investigator concerned, and gain clarity on their role, and the outcome being sought. When calling a hearing, give adequate and correct notice to all parties. Disclose all relevant information, and be clear on who is chairing the meeting, and who will be present. After the hearing, listen to the chair's views on the case and the verdict being proposed. Agree on notes, and on the letter being sent to the employee to advise on the outcome. Be clear on the appeal process. This week, Lucinda talks to HR advocate and co-founder of HR Independents, Ruth Cornish, about the sometimes complicated subject of sponsoring overseas workers, how to remain compliant, and what has changed since Brexit? Key Takeaways Significant trust is placed in sponsors and the Home Office imposes high standards and is extremely exacting in their requirements. There are three key parts that must be undertaken when becoming a sponsor - applying for sponsor license, understanding the processes required in order to sponsor a worker, and ensuring compliance at all times. Furthermore, suitability checks are mandatory, and will ensure that staff involved are eligible. Also, things that may complicate matters include unspent legal convictions, and failure to have paid VAT or other excise duties. Certainly, keeping detailed records is a must. Evidence of compliance must be available to produce when requested. Lastly, failure in these and other areas can lead to sponsorship status being lost or downgraded. If you enjoy this podcast, consider buying me a coffee: https://adamstoner.com/support These monthly updates are essentially diary entries that I share with you. Behaving as a sort-of time-capsule, these little bulletins have proved to be even more valuable this year, candidly capturing what made 2020 so unique. Here's what I got up to: JANUARY: I started the year by sharing four resolutions; to cut my carbon emissions, visit more museums and galleries, consume food in restaurants instead of taking it away, and to not let technology seep into my home as much. Ha. I achieved the first thanks to a global pandemic that ground me to a halt and spectacularly failed the rest. I'm not even mad about it. FEBRUARY: I launched my podcast and helped launch The Space Programme. I designed some stuff for BBC Radio Gloucestershire's 50 by 50 campaign; presenter Dominic Cotter had turned 49 and was on a quest to do fifty new things – one per week – in the countdown to his 50th. MARCH: 50 by 50 stopped but so did everything else. I stopped commuting, I tried to stop reading the news. I started a daily podcast, Stuck at Home. I remember feeling afraid in March – I think all of us did – but reading my update from that month, it shows a maturity I didn't expect. APRIL: Walks and work. I was versioning Stuck at Home sessions into three; a podcast, a one-hour radio piece, and a bespoke programme for BBC Sounds every day. As a body of work, it might be the thing I'm most proud of so far in my career. MAY: I turned 25. Picked up nominations at British Podcast Awards for The Santa Daily and The Week Junior Show. The best hotel I've ever stayed in – Three Abbey Green (the Lord Nelson Suite was the favourite) – closed its doors. JUNE: Picked up a pair of Maison Margiela shoes. Returned them after realising they were £400. With friends on Discord, I began a Bad Movie Club. I've watched more things this year than any other. We watched Cats. Maybe TIME magazine is correct; perhaps 2020 was the ‘Worst Year Ever'? JULY: 106 episodes of Stuck at Home later, it becomes Activity Quest. I play on high-ropes courses, go rock-climbing, head on long forest walks, visit zoos, and chat to some incredible and inspiring people. Childhood dream of becoming a Blue Peter presenter basically achieved. AUGUST: Began eating better thanks to Abel and Cole. Ate strawberries on the floor in my underwear in sweltering 32º heat. Played in the rain like a Hollywood movie when the heat finally broke. We sold our family home of 20-something years and I loaded everything I owned into boxes. SEPTEMBER: We moved, I took two weeks off work. We had no internet connection which, as someone who works-from-home in the middle of a work-from-home revolution, was a problem. We were in the middle-of-nowhere, surrounded by nothing but countryside. Bathed a lot. Walked even more. OCTOBER: I stood underneath the Earth for 30 minutes. I walked Gloucestershire's May Hill, I walked White Horse Hill, I walked a tiny portion of Ridgeway. I spent the month in nature. I left Twitter. I recorded more for Activity Quest this month than any other. I watched loads of TV from Criminal to 60 Days In. NOVEMBER: Like the rest of the nation, I slowed down as we entered a second lockdown. I got a new phone, I got an Apple Watch, I got a lot of Uber Eats. That resolution's truly out the window now. Oh well. I checked the price of Bitcoin and kicked myself for getting rid of my investment earlier than I should have done. Oh well! This past month, I went into London for the first time since March. Saw work-friends in the flesh for a mere 16 minutes. Had a Zoom Christmas party. Listened to lots of Taylor Swift, Sir Paul McCartney. Watched the season change around me as I reflected on the year and myself. The global effects of COVID-19 are undoubtedly devastating and this year has been tough for many. Never has a humble trip around the sun been so derided. 2020 felt like a never-ending churn of catastrophes for much of the year but it wasn't until I slowed down that I took stock of what I mad managed to achieve. 2020 was the year that: My four-hour round-trip commute no longer consumed a healthy percentage of my time or paycheque. I managed to get out and adventure more than ever before despite two national lockdowns that shuttered nearly everything. The world shrank as I both spoke to more people but also had a healthier relationship with the social internet. I started to really enjoy and take pride in the work I was making. I spent not an insignificant amount of time around people I love for the first time in almost half-a-decade. I realise how very fortunate I am to consider the only downside of 2020 lockdown hair that would rival the frontman of an 80s pop group. I am grateful for that. And so here we are… a day away from 2021 and another trip around the sun. The New Year is always dangerous. It provides an imaginary finish line. Most leaders have reached this imaginary finish line short of ideas on what to do next. With the UK's transition period for exiting the European Union ending at the stroke of midnight, with the vast majority of the UK population still to vaccinate, with more contagious forms of coronavirus undoubtedly making their way through families post-Christmas, and with uncertainty on what modern commerce looks like in a world of Zoom calls and same-day home-delivery, the reality is that we're not even out of the starting gates yet. Together, we've clocked that a subtle economic, ecological and social rebalancing needs to take place; it falls on civilians to rethink the way we operated and to turn the ashes of our old world into something new. Mulling over the changes to come, I am reminded of a poster sat on the wall of my secondary school classroom. It featured a quote from John W. Gardner who served under US President Lyndon Johnson. History never looks like history when you are living through it. It always looks confusing and messy, and it always feels uncomfortable. If we're ever going to see the change we want, 2021 is the time to push for it. Ready for the real challenge? See you next year.

In our latest episode Jeff and Graham are speaking to BBC Radio Gloucestershire presenter Jo Durrant. Jo hosts a wonderful science themed show called Jo Durrant’s Beautiful Universe. It should therefore come as no surprise for the theme of this show to be all things science. We talk both fact and fiction, as Jo reveals some of her favourite films. For fiction we talk about ET and 2001 (be aware, we speak at length about the enigmatic ending of that latter film as we try to work out exactly what it meant!). Then there are the powerful fact based dramas First Man and Apollo 13. That leads us neatly onto talking about space travel in general, returning again to documentaries (our big love at the moment – see also show 93). Graham and Jeff bombard Jo with such questions as What is it like to wear a space suit? How dangerous are space missions? How do you respond to people who say the moon landings did not take place? And many others. So if you, like us, are missing the Beautiful Universe show, then come along with us and catch up with the wonderful Jo Durrant. Thanks for listening.

This is a sample of a live broadcast from 20,000 feet over the North Sea. I was on board an RAF refuelling tanker taking part in a NATO exercise. The piece was a logistical challenge. My signal from the aircraft had to be picked up by a transmitter on the Isle of Wight. That signal was then sent to another transmitter in Portishead, which converted it to a telephone signal to be bounced on to BBC Radio Gloucestershire. I had to talk to each transmitter in turn as the chain was established. You cannot use a mobile phone in a petrol station and the same rule applies on a refuelling tanker; no jets were allowed to refuel while I was broadcasting. So the RAF was holding a flight of Harriers in formation while I did my broadcast. That meant I had to tell the story clearly in a short window of time - 2' 45".

Running to Stand Still is an audio drama about M.E. This is an original 60-minute audio play (with songs), featuring professional actors, with cameos from presenters on BBC Radio 4, BBC Radio Gloucestershire and Sky Arts 1, that deals with the illness M.E. as its focal point. It is written by a sufferer and it specifically addresses what happens to relationships around an individual who is stricken by the illness and should educate those that don't know much about this life-threatening condition. For those that have experienced the illness (first or second hand), it's a story you can empathise with. For those who haven't, it's a story you can sympathise with. If you would like to make a donation after listening, the charity is www.investinme.org. Presented by The OFFSTAGE Theatre Group, in association with Wireless Theatre (supported by BBC Radio Gloucestershire), and in aid of Invest In ME. Running To Stand Still first toured around schools and colleges in 1997, exactly 15 years ago, as well as being performed at an International Conference about the illness it was trying to raise awareness of (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis). It also had the distinction of being the first play to be broadcast on BBC Radio Gloucestershire in 1996. This is a charitable endeavour, which sees all profits going to Invest In ME (www.investinme.org); who are fundraising to set up a research centre into the much-misunderstood and life-threatening disease. Actor/Director/Writer and M.E. sufferer, Barnaby Eaton-Jones said: “The script was first written in 1992, which makes this the 20th anniversary of that event. But, a lot has changed since then. It was often sad, very frustrating and constantly bewildering to read so much new research since the play was last performed and find that there isstill prejudice, wrong information and lack of knowledge out there in the general public. Hopefully, this play will play a small part in helping to redress the balance.” Running to Stand Still Starring: Jilly Breeze, Barnaby Eaton-Jones, Dawn Stanley, Rob Leetham, Rowena Perkins The real-life radio personalities and presenters featured were, in alphabetical order…Richard Atkins, Claire Carter, Dominic Cotter, Rachel Darcy, Faye Hatcher, Steve Kitchen and Annie McKie With grateful thanks to Nick Bull and BBC Radio Gloucestershire Script and Songs (Music/Lyrics) by Barnaby Eaton-Jones, Sound, Production and Editing by Steve Bradbury Mastered by David Pickering Pick at FFG, The musical accompaniment was written and arranged by Paul Arthurs (Bass, Percussion, Additional Guitar), Steve Bradbury (Piano, Hammond Organ, Strings), With Barnaby Eaton-Jones (Guitar) Artwork supplied by Carolyn Edwards and Helen Morris Graphic Design by Scott Bishop at Jump Creative ‘Running To Stand Still' was produced by Steve Bradbury and directed by Barnaby Eaton-Jones The OFFSTAGE Theatre Group: offstagetheatregroup.com, Barnaby Eaton-Jones: barnabyeatonjones.com FFG: ffg.org.uk, BBC Radio Gloucestershire:

If you enjoy this podcast, consider buying me a coffee: https://adamstoner.com/support The back-to-back battering of storms Ciara and Dennis earlier this month proved largely uneventful for me and my travels, although there was a hot minute where I thought the roof was going to blow off of my local train station. Disruptive but relatively low-destruction storms like these serve as a handy reminder that extreme weather events will become increasingly frequent as temperatures continue to climb. I wrote about (and spoke about in my podcast) how to educate yourself and others on the climate crisis. It's a list of 24 things you can do to learn more, understand the solutions, and become a climate activist. Read it on my website or listen to the podcast episode. As well as working on my own podcast, which you can subscribe to on your podcast platform of choice, I've also been working on and enjoying the podcasts of other people. The Space Programme is one of them. It launched on February 21st. You can listen to the first two episodes by subscribing wherever you get your podcasts. It's a twenty-part drama/soap opera for children, created by Bafflegab for the UK's children's radio station Fun Kids. I designed the artwork. As well as The Space Programme, I've also designed bits and pieces for BBC Radio Gloucestershire's newest on-air initiative, 50 by 50. Presenter Dominic Cotter just turned 49 and and he's on a quest to do fifty new things – one per week – in the countdown to his 50th birthday. Take a listen the podcast version of this newsletter by tapping here and you'll hear a very nice testimonial from Dominic. Where There Is Light, an art installation built to celebrate 20 years of Action for Refugees and Asylum Seekers, was installed at Gloucester Cathedral from mid-January to the end of February. As well as a gorgeous evolving light display, a soundscape created in collaboration with the Everyman Theatre, The Music Works and Squidsoup, featured stories of refugees and asylum seekers from various countries who are now living in the area. I enjoyed that Brexit-voting Gloucester (58% leave) was perhaps unwittingly absorbing these diverse and vital voices. Take a listen the podcast version of this newsletter by tapping here to listen to the artwork. I heard the School of Life's Alain de Botton on Virgin Radio at the start of February and purchased one of his books, The News: A User's Manual, shortly thereafter. It's a good look at what's happening to our media, how you can spot news stories that cycle around and around again, and why neutrality in news organisations is bollocks. The podcast episode of this newsletter (which you can subscribe to here) contains a snippet of a 2014 talk that de Botton gave on exactly that topic. I saw 2014's The Kingsman and its sequel for the first time the other day. If you haven't, make sure you do. It's the perfect mix between a classic spy film and an action flick with some dark, Tarantino-like humour blended in. My girlfriend recommended the movies after we spent the morning walking around Croome. Croome's a National Trust site – we're both members – and also home to RAF Defford which became the main station in Britain for the development of airborne radar during and after WWII. As well as large parklands there's also a museum dedicated to the service men and women and their work during the war. Minutes after sending my last newsletter I stumbled upon a group of people who knit the weather. I'm a fan of taking concepts that are hard to grapple with and distilling them into simple things. In 2017 I made a clock with a single hand that takes 365 days to complete a revolution to demonstrate the passing of time and at the start of 2020 I made something similar to mark the coming decade. That's called Decade Clock. Here's Josie explaining how to knit the weather: I decided that this year, every day, I would knit a row on a scarf to mark the corresponding daily temperature/weather of my town. It felt like a good way to engage with the changing climate and with the changing year. A way to notice and not look away. I picked up Marrakech Intense, a parfum from my favourite skincare and toiletries brand, Aesop. I don't find it as intense as Hwyl, the other perfume I've been raving about from them, but it makes for a nice change. I also love the format; a roll-on is so much more discrete than a spray bottle and makes it easier to shove in my coat pocket to allow for top-ups during the day. It's marginally cheaper than their other offerings but still £67 for 10ml, so try it before you buy it. After almost a year of trusty service, I've finally worn out the two pairs of Calvin Klein jeans I purchased in May 2019. I've gone for some classic tapering Levi's 501s to replace them. I've been a lover of meditation app Calm for almost ten years (even speaking to its co-founder Michael Acton Smith back in 2016, read it at /calm) but have recently subscribed to Headspace. I still use, love, and recommend Calm and it's not that Headspace is a more or less superior app, it's just that change can be good – and sometimes a challenge, but that's sort of the point of meditating. I am particularly a fan of Everybody Headspace, ten minute meditation sessions every 30 minutes that groups of people do together in real-time. Plus Andy Puddicombe's voice is nice. That's all for now. Until next time. Your friend, Adam Stoner

This is an original 60-minute audio play (with songs), featuring professional actors, with cameos from presenters on BBC Radio 4, BBC Radio Gloucestershire and Sky Arts 1, that deals with the illness M.E. as its focal point. It is written by a sufferer and it specifically addresses what happens to relationships around an individual who is stricken by the illness and should educate those that don’t know much about this life-threatening condition. For those that have experienced the illness Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (first or second hand), it’s a story you can empathise with. For those who haven’t, it’s a story you can sympathise with. Hopefully, this play will play a small part in helping to redress the balance.” Starring: Jilly Breeze, Barnaby Eaton-Jones, Dawn Stanley, Rob Leetham, Rowena Perkins The real-life radio personalities and presenters featured were, in alphabetical order… Richard Atkins, Claire Carter, Dominic Cotter, Rachel Darcy, Faye Hatcher, Steve Kitchen and Annie McKie With grateful thanks to Nick Bull and BBC Radio Gloucestershire Script and Songs (Music/Lyrics) by Barnaby Eaton-Jones, Sound, Production and Editing by Steve Bradbury Mastered by David Pickering Pick at FFG, The musical accompaniment was written and arranged by Paul Arthurs (Bass, Percussion, Additional Guitar), Steve Bradbury (Piano, Hammond Organ, Strings), With Barnaby Eaton-Jones (Guitar) Artwork supplied by Carolyn Edwards and Helen Morris Graphic Design by Scott Bishop at Jump Creative ‘Running To Stand Still’ was produced by Steve Bradbury and directed by Barnaby Eaton-Jones #MyalgicEncephalomyelitis

After the war this became, as it’s still known now, GCHQ. First based in Eastcote, but in 1951 moving to its current home of Cheltenham. BBC Radio Gloucestershire recently ran a series of short programs in Anna Kings daily show about both establishments and have kindly said we can share them here with our Podcast Listeners.
