Embracing the Awkward - Navigating FFT's with Courage

Making it Count Podcast

When was the last time you did something for the first time? You probably felt awkward and uncomfortable and perhaps anxiety started creeping in about what people might think. What if you fail?  It's raw, it's real, and it's something we all face. Brené Brown calls these moments FFTs, which stands for "Fucking First Times" and I couldn't think of a better way to put it. Today I'm sharing my recent FFT and how to face these moments with courage instead of shying away from doing something new.  After a long time of procrastination and excuses, I finally took the plunge and attended my first spin class at a new centre. Being at a fitness level that I'm not happy with, it felt like I was starting from the beginning and my mind was flooded with excuses not to go. I was nervous about not knowing anyone, about whether I could set up my bike properly and felt like everyone would be watching me with judging eyes. But, I put my big girl pants on and kept reminding myself of all the things I coach my clients on: embrace discomfort, step outside of your comfort zone, and understand that growth happens there. For me, it was a spin class, and maybe for you, it's going to the gym, a networking event, starting a new project or having a conversation.  Whatever FFT you're facing, Brené says the best thing to do is to name the discomfort. Naming what's causing you anxiety makes it real and approachable. Here are three steps she recommends, which I found incredibly helpful: Normalise It: Understand that everyone experiences discomfort every time they do something new. It's perfectly okay to feel awkward, nervous and anxious because brave people feel uncomfortable. Put It into Perspective: Realise that the feeling is not permanent and doesn't mean you're bad at everything. You're in the middle of an FFT around this ONE thing. Reality Check Your Expectations: Understand that you won't crush it right away. Acknowledge that it will suck for a while, but it will get better with time. I also added a fourth step: Just Do It. Whether it's booking a class, walking through a door, putting your hand up, or searching Google for tips on how to start your own podcast, taking that first step is crucial. So did I crush my spin class like I was hoping to? No. My legs felt like lead and I was the last on the leaderboard. I had to remind myself: this was an FFT. BUT, I did end up knowing someone in the class, which made me feel more comfortable and the instructor was incredibly welcoming and helped me settle in. After the class, I felt proud of myself for just showing up. That FFT was done and next time, it will be easier.  I believe we should all face FFTs more often because growth happens outside our comfort zones. Whether it's writing a book, applying for a new job or attending a networking event, these first times pave the way for growth and confidence. So, if you've been putting off something that feels awkward or completely outside your comfort zone, I hope my recent experience gives you the courage to take that first step. You have a choice to do it or not, to chicken out or do the hard thing, to avoid it or to be proud of yourself. It's as simple as that.   Order My New Book “You Always Have A Choice” here  Connect with Julie: LinkedIn:    https://www.linkedin.com/in/julie-hyde/ Instagram: @juliehydeleads Website:     https://juliehyde.com.auSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We dedicate ourselves to our roles as parents, employees, caregivers, and volunteers, often leaving no room for personal rejuvenation. Whether it's to unwind after a long workday, relax on the weekends, or finding the courage to navigate social situations, alcohol can seem, at times, to be the solution to soothe the rough edges of life. Unfortunately, some of us have discovered that what once seemed like an innocent occasional indulgence has gradually transformed into a daily necessity. In today's episode, Colleen Kachman, host of the Recover with Colleen podcast and a recovery-certified Master Coach will take us on a profound journey through her personal struggle with alcohol and how she found a way to break free. A 50-year-old man had ritual sex with a 12-year-old girl while adult women assisted. And everyone was cool with it. That's just part of the bizarre story told in Netflix's Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey and the exploits of its prophet, Warren Jeffs. Keep Sweet's Fascination It's the story of a renegade Mormon group that still practice polygamy. Vigorous polygamy, especially the type that lets old men bang young women and, occasionally, girls. It's the kind of thing that disgusts, but it also arouses, at least at some level. Sex sells for a reason. Keep Sweet did, its IMDB rating currently sitting at 7.3 with 11,000 reviews (Netflix's Murder Mountain, which enjoyed the endorsement of Joe Rogan, sits at 6.8 with 3,200 reviews). But I don't think sex is the only reason Keep Sweetfascinates. I think it fascinates because, although everyone understands the sex part, they can't understand how an entire culture could allow such a thing to occur. If It Doesn't Fit, Put It on the Shelf The docuseries tries to explain it, but every interview or explanation came down to the same thing: it's how these people were raised. It was the only thing these people knew. They were raised in a polygamous culture that celebrated their prophet. If the prophet told girls to do something—or someone—they did it/him. If something didn't make sense, they were told to “put it on the shelf.” And just as the lechery of old men resonates with all men at some level, this kind of rationality resonates too. These girls who submitted to sex with old men, the parents who gave their consent the women who participated in the erotic ritual: they acted rationally. It's All Rational That's the real dirty secret in the docuseries and another reason why, besides the sex, it fascinates. We're all capable of such a thing. Not because of our nethers. But because of our brains. Show notes here

"What is the difference between vision and sight? “When we take a walk with someone and we see something, we may ask them, "What do you see?" or "What do you think about this?" These questions are made to stimulate their thinking. The same applies when we ask someone else to share their vision. However, if we are talking about vision as a way of seeing, then it is different from sight. When it comes to vision, there is a process involved in order to get what God has for us. We must have the courage to see things by vision, not by sight. This means that we have to have the courage to be able to see what God wants us to see, in spite of what the world tells us or even what our own eyes may show us.   Amanda Heal joins us on today's episode of The Mary Guirovich Show. Amanda is a resilience expert with a remarkable life story to tell. She explains her five secrets to increasing resilience through courage in her keynote speeches. She's the author of several books, the most recent of which is Seeing By Vision Not By Sight: How to Discover Your Life's Purpose And Put It Into Action. In her keynote talks, she shares her five keys to increasing resilience by building courage. Amanda survived being born 14 weeks premature. In the seven days when such tiny babies were not deemed viable, She was so small that her father could hold her in the palm of his hand. The oxygen, which actually kept her alive at birth, damaged her eyes, leaving her totally blind. But despite this, Amanda has continued to surprise people with her professional and personal achievements. After graduating with honors and law from the Australian National University, she embarked on a 17-year legal career. Amanda in her spare time climbed to an altitude of 10,000 feet in Nepal and conquered her phobia of getting lost to travel independently, both within Australia and overseas. When not speaking, Amanda is a podcaster. Episode Description:Why We Need a More Integrative Approach to Trauma in Our Theology discusses how theology, churches, and Christian teachings often fail to address trauma properly. We can see how the realities of trauma have been integrated into literature, art, history, and music as ways to express and heal trauma. However, while not all theology does this, some theology dismisses trauma or claims that you can heal through traditional modalities alone, and if you don't, it's your fault and you're not trying hard enough.   If you've been told this, this can be re-traumatizing, and it simply isn't true. Witnessing and validating trauma is a more realistic approach to dealing with trauma. By having a more integrative approach to our faith and theology, including the realities of trauma into our practices, integrating our healing practice in with our faith and theology, and acknowledging how trauma works in conjunction with our faith, we can take a more integrative and holistic approach to trauma that allows our relationship with Christ to heal us and change our lives. Breakdown of Episode: 1:18  Intro to Topic 3:47 Why You Can't Simplify Trauma and Put It in a Box9:46 Why It's Important We Integrate the Complexity of Trauma into Our Approach to Theology and Scripture17:57 Why an Integrative and Holistic Approach to Trauma in Your Life and in Our Theology is the Answer to Healing TraumaBulleted List of Resources"How Christian Theology and Practice Are Being Shaped by Trauma Studies" in Christian Century, by Sheila Rambo https://www.christiancentury.org/article/critical-essay/how-christian-theology-and-practice-are-being-shaped-trauma-studies   This article discusses how trauma is integrated into our culture, art, literature, and history in many rich ways to help those who've experienced move through it and heal. However, theology doesn't always address the realities of trauma and integrating the realities of what has happened into human life. Our theology doesn't always address the complex and messy nature of trauma. By addressing the realities of trauma in our theology and using a more integrating approach to heal trauma, we can make progress toward individual and cultural healing of trauma.    Subscribe to the email list for the latest episodes and channel updates by going to https://christianemotionalrecovery.com and then go to subscribe button.  Like FB Page: https://www.facebook.com/stopstrivingandstartthriving  Join Facebook Group Trauma Survivors Unite: Christian Emotional Recovery: https://www.facebook.com/groups/christianemotionalrecoverySubscribe to my YouTube channel for free meditation and more resources:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4a5jGXZ0-qzPINAspnLwPw Want to write your own healing message or memoir, but don't know how to get started? Before we launch into our first series on Assessment Methods, we wanted to take a moment to explore just what the purpose of assessment is. After an odd-but-hopefully-insightful potty-training analogy, each host shares a different model for what assessment means: A hamburger, the latin roots of the word, and a three-legged stool.
