One of the seminal figures in the history of Big Time Wrestling is Dave Burzyinski, better known to Detroit fans as "Supermouth" Dave Drason, the nefarious manager of one of the sport's greatest (and most violent) stars, the original Sheik. This edition of The Outdated Wrestling Hour With Bob Smith (former managing editor of Pro Wrestling Illustrated) finds a pair of kindred spirits engaging in an upbeat conversation about their respective wrestling careers; being a wrestling photographer and journalist; becoming a top heel manager almost out of the blue; the excitement of the Big Time Wrestling promotion; and even some chat about blues music. If you've never heard of the "Supermouth," this show will serve as an enjoyable opportunity to get to know a talented man who became the in-ring manager of the most vicious wrestler in the history of professional wrestling!Buzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! Who better to have on the show to discuss scary wrestlers for Halloween than the man who wrote a book about maybe the scariest of them all, The Sheik (Edward Farhat)? I'm happy to welcome for the first time on the show, author, historian and podcaster Brian R Solomon (@BrianRSolomon). Brian's biography of the Sheik, Blood and Fire, tells the story of how the boy fascinated by Middle Eastern culture in things like Rudolph Valentino's The Sheik and Michael Powell's The Thief of Bagdad, would provide the basis for his wrestling persona. We talk about his amateur wrestlingcredentials garnered during World War II and how they were part of his initial pro wrestling career, before he eventually became the Madman from the Middle East. We go over most of his career, both in the US, including his promotion Big Time Wrestling in Detroit and his phenomenal success in Japan, first with All Japan and then a decade later in FMW. Since Brian is currently working on a book about Gorilla Monsoon, we talk about the similarities, at least being amateur wrestlers who ended up with “foreign heel” gimmicks. We also have a fascinating conversation about early 20th American attitudes toward “exotic” cultures, like the Middle East and the Far East and how that shaped their gimmicks. We also look at how The Sheik, one of the biggest heels in the 1970s, never portayed the kind of anti-American character we associated with people like the Iron Sheik, Adnan Al-Kaissie or Scandar Akbar. From there, we have a long chat about the candidates for this year's Wrestling Observer Hall of Fame. Since we both have votes, we go over who we think the strongest candidates should be, even if there's no guarantee they'll be elected. We also discuss of the flaws in the system and ways it could be improved. We also have some chat about wrestling's place in popular culture in the 1970s and how the bloody wrestling magazine covers played into the seediness of the sport, before it became more sanitized in the 1980s. Finally, there's some comics chat, where I recommend some current books Brian might enjoy as a lapsed comics reader. This was a great show and I hope to have Brian back on the future to discuss some of the things we only briefly mention. Make sure to check out Brian's books and his podcast, Shut Up and Wrestle, part of the Arcadian-Vanguard network.

INTERVIEW BEGINS AT: 29:15 In the 1980's a pop culture explosion occurred in Professional Wrestling, it was everywhere, on TV's, in arenas, on toy shelves, on movie screens you name it...but where did this mass popularity come from, why did it explode? Because blueprints were put in place for just such a boom, and soon the wrestling business would change forever (for the better?) In the 1970's territories across the United States were developing wrestling into something more than a minor attraction, with a niche following, they made it personal, local shows made local heroes, and made the viewers believe. Each place was different, from presentation to actual wrestling styles, but soon, regional wrestling would go nation wide. We are thrilled to be joined by the great Terry Sullivan, who was the ring announcer and broadcaster for Big Time Wrestling in Detroit, Nikita Breznikov, a life long fan and historian of the classic WWWF (today's WWE) who eventually made his way into the busniess as manager of the legendary Nikoli Volkov, and rounding out this panel is a Rodney West, a second generation wrestling figure, son of the late great referee/booker/promoter/wrestling guru Ron West, Rodney along with his brother Brent grew up in and around the Georgia Wrestling scene and were drawn to the business likes moths to a flame. We share stories, memories and breakdown the business we all love from a bygone era, We hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed recording! So kick back, enjoy and please rate and share the show..let's keep the audience growing. Thank you all And hey, check out our Merch Store for Shirts. The greatest pro wrestling biography will be released on April 12. Blood and Fire: The Unbelievable Real-Life Story of Wrestling's Original Sheik is mandatory reading for fans of the genre. The son of Arab immigrants, Farhat proudly served his country in World War II before transitioning to professional wrestling. After a couple years, he developed his notorious persona, leveraging his Middle Eastern background to create an over-the-top character tailor-made for television, an emerging technology at the time. Over the next two decades, he criss-crossed North America, stabbing foes, collecting championships and riling up audiences along the way. In 1964, Farhat's entrepreneurial spirit fueled his purchase of Big Time Wrestling, also known as the Detroit territory, granting him a seat at the table of the most influential men in the business. Of course, all good things must come to an end, but I'll let you dive into the book for that. Author Brian Solomon, former writer at WWE Magazine and current contributor to PWI and Inside the Ropes, discusses WrestleMania 38, his "Shut Up and Wrestle" podcast and the arduous process of writing this magnificent book. A trailblazer and Big Time Wrestling's Goddess!
James Ellsworth's rise to WWE stardom was 14 long years in the making. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Ellsworth trained under Axl Rotten and made a living on the independent wrestling scene under the ring name "Pretty" Jimmy Dream. He worked for various promotions over the years - usually in a tag team with Adam Ugly - and made stops in American Combat Wrestling, Big Time Wrestling, First State Championship Wrestling and CZW. Ellsworth made random appearances in the WWE over the years, typically whenever the company ran shows in Maryland or Pennsylvania, usually just filling in as an extra or working as one of Adam Rose's “Rosebuds.” One night in 2016, fate stepped in and turned Ellsworth into a household name thanks to a brief promo before getting squashed by Braun Strowman on Raw. Ellsworth's story about how he found himself on national television involves Arn Anderson and his ability to throw a punch. Ellsworth putting over Strowman lead to meeting Vince McMahon, getting signed with the company, and being thrust into a program with AJ Styles and Dean Ambrose. In this interview, Ellsworth talks about his days on the indie circuit, training with an ECW original, getting his shot with the WWE, his run with Carmella, “winning” the women's Money in the Bank match, and the possibility of being called back to work for the company at any moment. Ladies and gentlemen, entering the podcast, hailing from Glen Burnie, Maryland…this is James Ellsworth. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/not-about-wrestling/support
