I know for a fact that black cats are seen as witches' familiars. Yeah. So is it actually a bad thing if you see a black cat crossing your path in the UK. Some people still believe that, I have to admit if I'm on the way to an exam or if I'm doing something very important and a black cat tries to walk across my path, I do tend to........shoo it away, or trying to scare it away. You're like not superstitious but you're somewhat superstitious. I don't want to .You do not wanna jinx it.I don't wanna tempt fate. You don't wanna tempt fate. Yes, now to tempt fate here is a little bit like in Chinese we say宁可信其有不可信其无。 Exactly. Yeah, but you also got some lores about big cats not just cat cat. Well yeah, but these are based on modern folklore. So these are called ABCs, Alien Big Cats. Why alien, not alien ET. Alien as in foreign. So these creatures are described as being similar to panthers, leopards or pumas. Now this is a little bit of an urban legend. This is kind of more modern folklore. But there have been sightings of big cats in Britain and these have been reported for decades when cows, sheeps have been killed. They found strange paw prints in remote areas. This is so weird. I mean you don't have any wild live population of these cats. This is the thing, theories about the origin of these big cats, normally come from animals that were released after the dangerous wild animals act of 1976. So before then rich people could keep pumas, leopards. So now it's illegal to keep these exotic animals, even if you're super rich, Well you need to get a license. They probably can get a license. So some people say actually maybe these are the creatures that were released by the pet owners. They can't just release them on the streets of England. It does happen, it does happen. This is ridiculous. But they don't release them on the streets. For example, there's the Beast of Bodmin Moor in Cornwall, which is. Oh I think I've been there, Bodmin, there's a jail there, right? There's a jail. There is a very, very mysterious part of the UK, very bleak, lots of fog, lots of mist.Forests?

Was Summerwind in Wisconsin really haunted? No one knows and if they do, they aren't saying. Today, only the foundations, the stone chimneys and perhaps the ghosts remain. (Summerwind: The Most Haunted House In Wisconsin) *** A young woman discovers that it's possible to live a lonely life, yet still not be alone. (Followed By a Child) *** Is it possible that during the years of World War 1, Agnes Whiteland, while peering off her balcony, saw a group of time travelers? (Agnes And The Time Travelers) *** Tituba proved to be a fantastic orator as she talked her way out of slavery using the fear and mass hysteria of witchcraft that paralyzed the people of Salem. (Tituba And the Salem Witch Trials) *** The discovery of a 10-year-old's body at an ancient Roman site in Italy suggests his family, friends, and neighbors thought he was a vampire – and took measures to make sure he wouldn't return from the grave. (The Unearthing of a Child Vampire) *** Authorities placed Gil Perez in jail as a deserter and for the possibility that he may have been in the service of Satan. In Gil's defense though, he said he simply teleported somewhere else. (Teleportation of a Spanish Soldier) ***
Matthew Weeks was found guilty and hanged for the murder of Charlotte Dymond. Today it is said that the ghosts of both of them roam the countryside – but could it be that Matthew's ghost is lamenting because he was innocent of the crime? (The Murder of Charlotte Dymond on Bodmin Moor) *** A building situated right in the middle of London's swankiest and most historical areas, has long been said to be the lair of something not of this earth. (The Bizarre Nameless Thing of Berkley Square) *** “The Jungle Book” - we are all familiar with the story in some way – either from the classic animated Disney film version from 1967, the live action version in 2016, or the original novel by Rudyard Kipling published in 1894. In fact, yet another retelling of the story is coming in 2019 in a film entitled simply, “Mowgli”. But what many don't know is that the character of Mowgli was, in fact, inspired by a real boy who was raised by wild animals. (The Real Life Inspiration for Mowgli) *** Evil stepmothers, jealous of their stepdaughters' beauty are a classic tome in fantastical stories – but Martha Savcoll was no fairy tale. (Brooklyn Murderess) *** Of all the places in the world you would expect to be safe from the paranormal, it would be a church – but that would not be telling the truth when referring to Adams Grove Presbyterian Church in Alabama. (Haunted Adams Grove Presbyterian Church) *** Outside of Washington, D.C. lies Forest Haven Asylum, an abandoned institution with a thoroughly disturbing past. On today's episode, I talk to composer Doug Bielmeier. Originally from Buffalo, Doug started out playing in indie rock bands before shifting his focus to composition, which he received both bachelors and masters degrees for. His music has been described as an "extension of Xenakis's early electroacoustic tape pieces", and his albums include 2017's Betty and the Sensory World, 2018's Costa Mesa Rocking Chair, and 2019's Beast of Bodmin Moor. Doug also holds a PhD in education and is a professor at Northeastern University in Boston. In addition to this all, Doug is the creator and host of The Process, a podcast that focuses on the creative process for experimental music. His most recent album Music for Billionaires was released by New Focus Recordings at the end of October, and it is great! In this episode, Rachel talks to four 'SWCP completers' - people who have completed the 630 miles of Britain's first coast path and longest National Trail. Many completers can take years to complete the Trail, but our four guests have each undertaken the journey in a thru-hike (or run in one case!) ranging from 56 days, 45 days and a record-breaking 18 days, 14 hours, 46 minutes, and 46 seconds! Each of our guests shares their stories of walking the Path, the challenges a thru-hike can bring, the incredible experience of connecting to nature, and the generosity of people they met on the Path. Listen and enjoy hearing from those who have walked and run the Path and what it means to them. As well as taking away valuable advice from their adventures that may help inspire your own SWCP completer journey. Guests include: Martin Berry, SWCPA, Volunteer Path Rep I have always loved being “outside” and the Venture Scouts (now Explorer) gave me the chance to try many outdoor activities when younger. Having been lucky to take early retirement from a career in logistics/supply chain; and, more latterly the civil service, I am now more able to pursue my main activity of walking. Living in close proximity to the SWCP and Bodmin Moor provides great opportunities to get out and about without travelling far. I find walking out in the natural environment both physically and mentally beneficial to my wellbeing. Dani Blackie, the Coastal Ultra Runner As an avid ultrarunner, surfer and outdoors enthusiast I am always looking for a new adventure to embark upon. In June this year I completed the whole of the 870 miles Wales Coastal Path and back in 2021 I was the first Solo Female Fastest Known Time (FKT) holder for the SWCP. Playing in the elements, connecting with nature and people is where the magic happens! Malcolm Joyce, SWCP Completer and Fundraiser I fell in love with the SWCP in 2021, and decided to do the 630 miles in one go last year (2022).  Having survived a near death experience, when caught in a rip tide at Trebarwith Strand it seemed fitting to raise money for the RNLI; the lifeguard saved my life!  Graham Eaves, five-times SWCP completer Currently on a thru-hike of the SWCP for the sixth time! His love and dedication to the path and the experiences it brings show no sign of ending. For Graham, he may never call himself a SWCP 'completer', as his journey continues.

He has spent much of his life traveling in the world's rainforests and deserts and campaigning to protect both them and their people. One of the few remaining explorers who merits the name, he made the two first crossings of South America from East to West (1958) and North to South (1964/5). He believes that the spirit of exploration is alive and well and never more needed than now, as we begin to realize how little we really understand our world and how rapidly we are destroying it. The author of over twenty-five books, most of which are still in print, he also became celebrated as a photographer via the critically acclaimed exhibition at the National Theatre, Echoes of a Vanished World, which detailed his first encounters with pristine peoples and places. From his farm on Bodmin Moor, which won the Award as the Best Large Scale Renewable Energy Project in Cornwall, he still travels widely, lecturing and visiting expeditions in the field.

Blue Ground Beetle, rare beetle discovered on Dartmoor

Invertebrate conservation charity Buglife is thrilled to announce that two new populations of one of Britian's rarest beetles have been discovered in Devon. The rare Blue Ground Beetle (Carabus intricatus) has been found at two new sites on Dartmoor – thanks to the efforts of Buglife staff, volunteers, and local naturalists. Laura Larkin, Buglife Conservation Officer shared “Previously, the Blue Ground Beetle was only known from 13 sites in Devon, Cornwall and South Wales, so these new sightings are really significant, and they show how much we still have to learn about this magnificent beetle!” Blue Ground Beetle, rare beetle discovered on Dartmoor Up to 38mm in length, the Blue Ground Beetle is the UK's largest ground beetle. Given its name as a result of the beautifully marked and strikingly blue-coloured wing cases, the Blue Ground Beetle makes its home in damp, deciduous, often ancient, woodlands of Oak and Beech. Both the adults and their larvae feed on slugs; upon finding their prey, the beetle will bite with its large jaws and inject digestive juices into the slug, eating it by sucking out its insides. Blue Ground Beetles are mainly nocturnal and can be found all through the year, although they are most active and easiest to see from March to June, when adult beetles can be found clambering up mossy tree trunks under cover of darkness, in search of prey. Blue Ground Beetles can be easily confused with some of their smaller, more commonly seen relatives including the Violet Ground Beetle (Carabus violaceus); these beetles can be found throughout the UK, are smaller in size and more purple in their colouring. It would be highly unlikely to find a Blue Ground Beetle outside of its known range. Buglife's Dartmoor Blue Ground Beetle project was established to survey Dartmoor woods; seeking undiscovered populations of the Blue Ground Beetle. Working with local volunteers and naturalist John Walters, the project team have spent many damp torchlit nights searching for the beetle. The hard work and late nights have been rewarded with the addition of two new Blue Ground Beetle sites on Dartmoor during 2022. Claire Hyne, from Papillon Gin who have funded the project said: “We are delighted to be able to provide funding for this important project on Dartmoor. It is very exciting that two new sites have been found this year. Great work from the Buglife team and volunteers”. Richard Knott, Dartmoor National Park Authority's Ecologist, said: “Dartmoor is of national importance for the Blue Ground Beetle, Britain's largest and rarest beetle, and the combination of ancient valley woodlands and humid climate create the perfect conditions for slugs, which adults and larvae feed on. The discovery of these new sites is very exciting and indicates that Dartmoor habitats remain favourable for this rare and fascinating species. There has been further excitement following a member of the public finding a deceased beetle whilst out walking near Bodmin Moor in Cornwall. Tom Waters, who discovered the beetle said “‘I was genuinely thrilled to discover the Blue Ground Beetle in what is one of my favourite spots, and also very proud to be able to provide a new record for the beetle in Cornwall.” Laura Larkin added “These new Blue Ground Beetle records are really exciting. To find two additional sites on Dartmoor and realise that a third site in Cornwall is much larger than we originally thought are very significant for this very rare species. The fact that we now know of 15 UK sites is an incredible boost for these magnificent beetles, and there is still more work to do.” If you're interested in learning more about Buglife's Dartmoor Blue Ground Beetle Project and would like to get involved please visit Dartmoor Blue Ground Beetle Project – Buglife projects Buglife is the only organisation in Europe devoted to the conservation of all invertebrates our aim is to halt the extinction of invertebrate species and to achieve sustainable populations of...

I'm excited to introduce this week's guest, Cara Wilde. Cara has been a guest many times on the show, and this time we're talking about adventures with stone circles. Cara lives in Cornwall, where she's got several stone circles within walking or running distance from her home. If you've listened to this podcast for a while, or if you've read my book If Trees Could Talk, you'll know how important the Avebury stone circle is to me. But I don't really understand what goes on when I visit Avebury, so it's been great to have this conversation with Cara about how she works with stone circles, and what might be possible for me. Stone circles are a fascinating part of our history, and I think they're very much worth visiting ... even if you don't consider yourself to be a spiritual person.   About Cara Wilde Cara is a mystic, shaman and healer whose business Wild Bliss focuses on creating a more sacred planet one person at a time. Cara supports professional women who want to remember who they truly are, why they are here and want to express that as a body of work in the world. Cara left her counselling and more mainstream work behind her when she couldn't use her psychic abilities or work with guides and began to feel as though she was working blind. She set up her own business as an EFT practitioner, started to use her channeling and intuitive abilities and felt like she'd got the team on board and helped her clients in making more significant and longer lasting changes in their lives. As part of her work Cara channels a collective called The Ancients and offers practical guidance and support specific to the needs and concerns of those of us who are deeply sensitive and passionate about creating real change in the world. Cara passionately believes that those of us considered misfits are truly here to create a new way in the world and are part of the Divine's blueprint for a Heaven on Earth. Cara lives in Cornwall, surrounded by the ocean and stone circles. When she isn't working, you can find her running the trails or curled up under a heavy blanket with a good book. You can find her at her website and Instagram.   Listen To This Episode        What You'll Learn What are stone circles + where they can be found Why you might want to visit a stone circle How to engage with stone circles What stone circles want from us How to build a personal relationship with a stone circle Things you can do when you visit a stone cirlce Is bigger better for stone circles? “Here's the suffering: I just made the statement ‘I really appreciate music when people are being honest.' And then we bring in ‘voice' into that. Now, when someone puts pen to paper if they're concerned about being honest and being true to their voice, I feel like that is a recipe to not write anything at all.” Boston based, Doug Bielmeier creates commercial and experimental music tailored for boutique audiences and media described as an extension of Xenakis's early tape pieces (American Record Guide, 2018) and “drone work meant to shake you out of your shell of complacency (Midwest Record).” Bielmeier has been featured on over 10 Album including Plague Tape (Boston Hassel, 2021) and Monophonic (SEAMUS, 2020) and his recent releases Ambient Works (Albany Records, 2021) Beast of Bodmin Moor (2019), and Betty and the Sensory World (Ravello, 2017). Performed and broadcasted internationally: over 100K listeners at Somafm.com. Performed by the Unheard-of Ensemble and Hypercube Ensemble. Doug is exceptional at seeing different ways in which something can be understood; for example, he finds ways to reframe negative self-talk into something more constructive. This ability to search for different perspectives is certainly consistent with The Process, a podcast where he talks to composers about their process for creating music. Although we set out to have a thorough conversation about his podcast, which we eventually did, our conversation took many twists and turns: like writing honest music vs. writing to your voice, a technique Doug like to use which he calls “windowing,” silly social media trends, living in Bowling Green, different accents throughout the United States, and so much more on episode 20 of The Making Noise Podcast. We had planned for a 45-minute conversation and ended up talking for 1 hour and 40 minutes. That alone I think is an indicator of how much we enjoyed the conversation. Alleged interactions with extra-terrestrial craft and their occupants come in many forms, each providing varying degrees of evidence with which to validate their provenance. The right pet could be a wonderful companion – but what are the costs? This week, with the help of Rebecca Morgan who knows all about taking on a puppy, Susie, Tiggy and Ann look at what is involved in taking on a pet - something which a newly retired person might well consider once they were able to give them a bit more time than would have been possible when they were working. Lots of issues to consider of course: what are the costs? How much time is involved? Where can you find the help you might need? Can you provide the right facilities? What are the benefits? Which would be the right pet for you? And given that you have to make a lot of sacrifices to have a pet with you ….. is it worth it? Rebecca tells us about the time she had to care for a python; and Tiggy tells us about the time she bought a puppy from Harrods! Braydon and Belinda are back for the final episode of 2020! Belinda starts the episode off by discussing the Mistletoe Bride of Bramshill House, who died after a misfortunate game of hide and seek on her wedding day lead her to become lost forever. After her body was eventually discovered half a century later, the object she was hid within was passed on to new owners and is reportedly haunted by the ghost of the dead bride.Braydon goes on to chat about the ABCs (aka Alien Big Cats) of the UK! In a rather odd circumstance, there appears to be a growing population of big cats in the UK, and recent studies show that sightings are very common. The Beast of Exmoor and the Beast of Bodmin Moor at two notorious ABCs that are discussed in this episode!Happy Holidays friends, hope you all have a nice time with your loved ones and stay safe! Minhocão, is a giant Brazilian worm Mapinguari, a hairy humanoid cyclops with a gaping mouth on its belly, or a relict giant ground sloth Elwetritsch, aa scaly, big-breasted chicken with antlers. Bukit Timah Monkey Man, seen as far back as 1805 Loch Ness Monster, basically the most famous cryptid like ever. Right? Yeti, basically the second most famous cryptid like ever. Right? Yeren, basically a Chinese yeti, with over 400 alleged sightings. You may recall this cryptid appeared in John Carpenter's Big Trouble in Little China. Ahool, a giant chimpanzee-faced bat. Beast of Bodmin Moor, a prowling jungle cat from pippity poppity ol' England. Kraken, the giant Scandinavian cephalopod... not Roman or Greek like Clash of the Titans would lead you to believe. Bunyip, a giant feral hippopotamus, which translates to "Evil Spirit." Ningen, not all monsters need fangs and spikes to Leprechaun, who used to wear red, not green. Nuts, right? Mongolian Death Worm, or Olgoi-khorkhoi, is basically a sand worm from Dune covered in bones, totally poisonous, and able to emit electrical shocks. Myths, they surround us. Many have tried to prove or disprove the existence of Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster. Bodmin Moor is said to have its own beast who occasionally wanders into view, and lightening supposedly doesn't strike twice, although some scientists take issue with that claim. The same reach can be said of marketing myths. Once cultivated from a person's mind and shared initially from desk-to-desk, and then later computer-to-computer, and now we're even seeing generational baton sharing is happening. The great thing about modern marketing is the data. It's easy to prove or disprove something. Despite that, many marketers have been happy following the so-called facts laid down within marketing and not taking time to check authenticity. For example:1.     Only short-form content performs well on Social Media2.     Blogs must be 800 words or less3.     Social Media is free marketingAre they bonafide or BS? Doug Bielmeier, a professor at Northeastern University, has that - Doctorate in Education, but also time in a DC-area hip hop studio, and time banging out track in Nashville, Doug has the background that brings weight to his music industry teaching. He also has a really interesting musical practice. He combines audio processing with a variety of sound sources, with the most significant being his use of the lap steel guitar as his primary instrument. That alone was enough to make me want to learn more! He's done two solo albums that we discuss at length: Betty and the Sensory World (http://www.ravellorecords.com/catalog/rr7972/) and Beast of Bodmin Moor (https://soundcloud.com/douglassbielmeier/sets/beast-of-bodmin-moor). In addition to these links, the content is available on Spotify, Amazon Music and other streaming locations. It's useful to listen to this work, since it is so revealing to how Doug approaches his work. Enjoy!

Amanda and Sarah talk big cats and other critters for this episode. Amanda takes inspiration from the Amazon Prime series Hellier with a look at the 1955 Kelly-Hopkinsville goblins case, considered one of the most witnessed alien encounters ever documented. Sarah gives an overview of ABCs, or alien big cats, a type of phenomenon where people claim to see large wildcats in areas they don't belong. Other subjects covered include fun with owls and British versions of Tiger King.  Recommendations: Sarah recommends the Amazon Prime sci-fi drama series Tales from the Loop. Amanda recommends the 1984 made-for-TV horror movie Invitation to Hell.  Sources: Listverse (10 Mysterious Cats Of Great Britain) Cornwall Live (This is the evidence the Beast of Bodmin could actually be haunting Bodmin Moor and Cornwall) Metro UK (Beast of Bodmin mystery finally solved: It’s a cat.) It’s time for a lesson in the ABC’s… No, I trust you know your alphabet, I’m talking about Alien Big Cats. These aren’t some extra-terrestrial tentacle beings that look like cats, but rather regular old exotic cats, like pumas or leopards that have somehow found their way to a part of the world in which they simply do not belong. From these ABC’s stems countless myths and legends, and even inspired (to a degree) a classic Sherlock Holmes tale. These cats roam the highlands and fields of places all around the world, but today’s stop takes us to jolly Ol’ England, to a place in Cornwall called the Bodmin Moor, where a beast has been sighted for years, and on more than one occasion. Despite the lack of hard evidence, people swear that something stalks the scenic plains. In the episode, we’ll talk about different theories, as well as the likelihood of something like this living so far from its natural habitat. Our sponsor: www.morbidlybeautiful.comMerch: www.redbubble.com/people/HorrorShotsYouTube: Horror ShotsTwitch: www.twitch.tv/horrorshotsplaysWebsite: www.horrorshots.comInstagram: horrorshotsphotographyTwitter: @horrorshotsprodFacebook: HorrorshotsPatreon: www.patreon.com/horrorshots See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

S2 E21: The Beast Of Bodmin Moor This time, on Counting Cryptids: We discuss releasing animals into the wild, how little we know about europe, and a big ass cat known as The Beast of Bodmin Moor. This "beast" is pretty much just a panther, but in a place where it has no business, Europe. Though official reports maintain that "No verifiable evidence for the presence of a 'big cat' was found" there has been no shortage of sightings adding credibility to these creatures. And with recent, well documented, big cat escapes in the area, this podcaster subscribes to the belief that a particular person plotted this European panther population expansion project. An entertaining, warm and quirky novel of families, secrets and the truth of love. Judith shares her life with her partner Joanna on the lonely wilds of Bodmin Moor, far from the memories and trauma of her childhood. But when Judith's sister, Deborah, is tragically widowed, the women agree to meet. And what is intended to be a harmonious reunion turns into an entanglement of resentment, jealousy and desire, as aspects of the past force themselves into an uneasy present, with some surprising results.

Years before Sarah Hayes was made partner at KPMG, she was growing up in Bodmin Moor with dreams of becoming a vet working with large animals. Now, Hayes has spent the last 15 years at KPMG and was made partner in the real estate transaction services team in May. But, she tells EG’s Tomorrow’s Leaders Podcast: “I’ve not come the standard route.” She studied accounting and finance at the University of Plymouth where those around her doubted her future prospects. She says: “I can remember being at university and being told that none of us would get into Big Four because you had to go to a better university. There’s a big part of me that would quite like to find that lecturer and stick my tongue out at him.” In this podcast, Hayes speaks about being a role model to other women in the industry and the conversations property needs to be having around the diversity of thought. She also talks about her favourite dragon - not mentioning Game of Thrones once - and about the relative viciousness of horses versus ducks.

Golowan is the Cornish tradition of lighting Midsummer Bonfires. This ancient tradition which hopes to prolong the summer sun for a good harvest was revived by The Old Cornish Society. Helen Mark meets some of their members to learn how they hope to keep the unique identity of this place alive and well. On Bodmin Moor and Kit Hill there are reminders of man's habitation going back 5000 years. The fires they light on Bodmin Moor each year hark back to pre-historic times and scattered around the moor are Neolithic monuments which bear testament to man's long history in this 'ritual landscape'. Writer Philip Marsden explains how his search for the 'Spirit of Place' began on the moors and then spread deep into the heart of the Cornish landscape and its people.
