Due to not getting internet installed in my new home until August, I'm unable to stream LIVE shows until then! Instead, here's another remastered version of The Sound Test's second show of all time! This time, I speak an unbelievable amount of bollocks. There are parts of this episode that really make me cringe, but I think longtime listeners will enjoy hearing some of my naivety and growth as a VGM fan. Really, I was at the very beginning of my journey! In particular, I'm especially embarrassed about my totally misread pronunciation of "Clark Aboud" as "Clark Abound" - sorry Clark! Fortunately, after two interviews with the man himself, I think we're cool!Dale brings his usual unique perspective to the proceedings and, other than a few ignorant comments on my part, this is another great, relaxed evening with the two of us. All the chat aside, the playlist stays strong this week with a number of banging choices and odd gems side-by-side. However, it's worth mentioning that there are several tracks/games on this playlist that would later become repeated favourites of the show. Apologies for some of the replays!Previously, this episode was only available to patrons, but I've given it a clean up and posted it here ready for the usual stream time. Essentially, I've replaced the music with better quality rips and tweaked the volumes of our chat slightly. This week's playlist:C418 - Haunt Muskie [Minecraft]Norihiko Hibino & Cynthia Harrell - Snake Eater [Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater]Hirokazu Tanaka & Masato Kouda - Humoresque of a Little Dog [Super Smash Bros. The song was written by Michael Jackson during the time of the Invincible album. Michael pulled the track out of the archives in 2007 to work on the song with producer Theron "Neff-U" Feemster. Jackson first put down a sketch of the lyrics in 1999, then he began working out the music with longtime friend and collaborator, Brad Buxer, who co-wrote the song. Over the next ten years, Jackson returned to the track numerous times. Jackson and Brad Buxer continued tinkering with it in Las Vegas in 2007. In October 2008, when Jackson lived in Los Angeles, he asked recording engineer Michael Prince to put the latest mix of the song on CD so he could listen to it and see what might be improved, but he never got around to working on it again. Teddy Riley co-produced the song along with Theron "Neff-U" Feemster following Jackson's death. Riley also wrote a new bridge, performed by Taryll Jackson, that included different lyrics from those left by Jackson. The track uses the background chorus from "The Hurt", a 1984 song by The Jacksons released on their Victory album.

Alicia Previn has lived most interesting life. She began playing the violin when she was about seven years old and was classically trained at the Royal Academy of Music in London. She grew to be an accomplished instrumentalist having been, as she puts it, "born into music". If her last name sounds familiar, it's because she shares it with her late father, Andre' Previn, Academy Award winner and composer, who was tremendously influential in film and music for the better part of eight decades. But Alicia found her own path. Granted, it took some unusual turns through the experience of living in a cult environment as teen, but later weaved her way in through multiple roles in music as an instrumentalist, singer, composer and teacher. The first Singing Mountain of 2019 is also the first in a new series looking at the interactions between mainstream pop music and video game music. Though this episode focuses on Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson, consider it an overview of the many ways VGM and pop can play off each other. I’m also stoked to say that in addition to the Jacksons, I got to mention Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush, Carly Simon, Biz Markie, Phil Collins, Sia and The Beatles, and I never thought I’d get to do all that in one episode of this show. It’s super weird, and I couldn’t be happier to be deep-diving into all manner of pop culture obscurities.
